I left sprint recently sold my phone with it rooted and and a patched ota rom on it. The guy went to get it activated and they couldn't get it done, said it was freezing up, sprint rep knew it was rooted, and said it needs to be back to stock unrooted???? Is this true? Anybody know?
Any time you take your phone to sprint ALWAYS UNROOT. They can tag the account. You should of unrooted before selling the phone

They were probably trying to get into the Activation Menu in ESPT. If they could not get it to work, that would be a clue that the phone was Rooted. But as mentioned in the post above. As a Rule of Thumb, never sell a phone Rooted. Also never take a phone into a Sprint store for any type of Tech work if it's Rooted. They can and most times do Flag the account. Not what you want. After that any phone issues you run into they may try to claim it's because your device is rooted.
Thanks I put it back to stock.
I didn't realize a rooted phone would not allow you to get into the "Activation Menu in ESPT"
You can get more money some times for rooted phones, but i guess not with Sprint. My bro sold a SGSII rooted for T-mobile for big bucks, but i guess with sim cards, it makes it easy.
Is the "Rule of Thumb" to return phones back to stock before selling for Sprint and Verizon phones only?
I'm sorry, I didn't properly explain. Rooting doesn't affect if you can get into ESPT or not. Rooted phones can still use ESPT without issue. But it does depend on the Rom on the phone. But yes as a " Rule of Thumb " , if the device is going to be Sold or taken in for service. No matter who the person, or carrier is it's always better if it's Unrooted.

Not to be rude but Verizon uses CDMA (like Sprint excluding Nextel products that use iDEN). Verizon phones domestically do not use sim cards. The only CDMA phones that use sim cards are dual mode international phones (the sim card is only used for GSM networks abroad). AT&T and T-mobile use sim cards domestically (GSM) so maybe one of those?

Actually, from what I have read on the internet, Verizon LTE SIM cards are tied to activation of 3G CDMA on LTE equipped phones. I don't know how they did it, though. Also, I heard that Verizon LTE devices have the PRL loaded on the SIM card making it nearly impossible to flash a different PRL onto the phone. I even heard that Sprint is doing that with their LTE phones.

search around a bit. radio is subjective, two people with the same phone and same service in the same room will get different results with radios. best thing is try a few out and see if any are better for you.
Simple mobile uses tmobile bands therefore you only will get edge speeds, try the Att go phone sim from Walmart you'll get great speeds and maybe straight talk

The one issue with GoPhone is that if the SIM has been activated in a different phone, and less than 6 months have passed since it was activated, you will likely get an IMEI locked message. This doesn't mean there is any issue with the Inspire, simply that the GoPhone SIM is locked to the IMEI of the phone it was activated in.
I use red pocket mobile. In northern cali. Runs on ATT hspa plus. Not bad no issues. T mobile doesn't offer a 3g plan. Red pocket is 50-60. Might want to look into it.

The six month policy is for unlocking the phone to other carriers. you have it backwards, my friend. If you call them and tell them that you are changing phones because the one it was activated on was damaged or non functional anymore, they will send a code to the phone to unlock the SIM. I think they can only do that for a SIM that is locked to an Android. If it was activated on a non-smart phone, you can go to any AT&T store and tell them you want to change phones and they will do it.

Not sure what you found to be incorrect in my statement. I never claimed the gophone sim couldn't be unlocked to be used in the inspire, just that it is locked by default to the phone that it is activated in. Also, though what you say is true about being able to get it changed, by default AT&T personnel don't seem to be able to diagnose the problem, when you give them the error message. A friend of mine had this issue when he tried to use a gophone sim in a nokia smartphone, and after going to the AT&T store, calling them up, etc, he asked me and I told him his SIM was probably locked to the phone it was activated in. Once he knew this, he called, and they unlocked it. However, neither the store nor customer service was able to help him, until he told them what the problem was. I also picked up the inspire I am using now for cheap, because the seller tried putting a gophone sim in it, and it came up with an "IMEI Locked" message. He assumed there was a problem with the phone, and AT&T customer service was unable to help him. Knowing the issue with GoPhone sims, I bought the phone, and have had no issues with it. So, though what you say is true, you have to know about the gophone simlock issue, in order to get it resolved.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

I was thinking about getting a used phone and I was wondering if I would have to go to the Verizon Store in order to activate it or could I just throw my SIM in it?
Uhhhh, what phone and service do you have now and are you switching to Verizon or what ?
Verizon doesn't use SIM cards, they use CDMA. Some of their phones have embedded SIMs and maybe even full ones - but they won't get you on Verizon's actual network.
Pennycake is partially correct. If it's an LTE phone, it uses a SIM. If you are going from one LTE phone to another (assuming you aren't coming from another carrier or anything) you can pop your SIM into the new phone and boot up. Everything will work fine.
Their old phones didn't utilize a SIM except for international purposes on certain phones, but now most do and it makes switching phones as easy as the GSM carriers. Have fun!

Can I switch my verizon s3 sim card to a att one x?
I have looked up apn's and such but every time I put in an apn, then click save...it isn't there. There are no apns on the phone at all.
I have been on Verizon for over a year. I like their coverage but they are expensive each mo. I picked up this phone from a person who needed money, said the phone had been cut off because they couldn't pay their bill. They had unlocked it and rooted it before it was cut off. I can get on internet and use it as long as I am around wifi (except for phone calls of course) but I would like to get it to work and switch to Straight Talk.
When I go to settings and networks it says "Disconected because service is unavailable" I click it anyway and go apn's. there are none there. I make a new one and save it and it disappears. This is done when I have my verizon sim card in it. When I take the sim out I can't get to the APN's they are grayed out.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much...

This.
It will not work. Verizon uses a completely different network that your One X is not capable of connecting to.
Verizon uses CDMA for voice and 3G, which doesn't use a SIM. I've never used Verizon, so I'm no expert. But just doing a quick search it looks like the SIM is only for LTE. Plus, Verizon doesn't use the same band for LTE that AT&T does, so even LTE is not going to work on this phone.
http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/4gsim.html
As a rule, GSM phones will not work on Verizon. There may be some exceptions (such as phones that have both GSM and CDMA support). But the moral of the story is that you need to do thorough research before buying any phone that is not direct from your carrier, as failure to do so may mean spending your money on a phone that does not work at all on your network.
The phone will work on Straight Talk, as ST uses AT&T and T-Mobile, which are both GSM carriers.

Yeah, I was surprised to even see the mention of a Verizon SIM, as I didn't think there was such a thing. But apparently now there is, with LTE.
Yes I can confirm. A friend of mine has the RAZR m, and it has a sim in it. Now it all makes sense. Still, two different networks and not compatiable. Now people think they can go sim swapping...thanks Verizon

Since I can't use my Verizon Sim in it. I can try the Straight Talk sim I guess. Only thing bothering me is there are no APN's on the phone and I haven't been able to make one stick... If I get a sim for Straight talk, I am wondering if I can get the APN's to stay.

Noticed a couple threads similar over the various s4 sections.
I'm in Canada but know that my device is not required by my provider it enable data. I change devices about every 8 months and can just swap out the SIM and I'm good to go.
If AT&T has issues with the Google edition s4 couldn't you just say that it's a normal s4 bought of eBay or Craig's list to have an lte data plan enabled?

No because in the IMEI comes up as unlocked device in their system and they pretty much are trying to get you off the phone at that point. Tried 3 diffrent reps and asked to be connected to next tier tech support.
Another update.. I gave them an IMEI from a note 2 i have.. LTE plan went on fine.. but the phone doesn't get anything more than hspa+.. 4mb down. THis is BS.. if they cannot connect the phone or I have to jump through hoops like I had to with the NExus 4 (which i had to call in like every month to have something reset) I am going to just send it back Not worth the headache.

Doubt it.. got escalated up to manager,.. basically you will not get lte on these devices. Only on att branded phones. That is the message I am being told directly. This is total BS I f'n hate ATT. Whoever is buying this for ATT beware.. your going to have a bad time. I am sending this right back as it's just as crippled as the nexus 4 with this carrier.
I bought a I9505 and had same issue (no LTE).
I have 3 lines with AT&T and I could watch the AT&T website update as I used different SIMs in the I S4, the Vivid and a Nexus 7 (3G).
I was lucky that I bought the i S4 from Amazon so no problem with refund.
I suspect if you had a never used SIM and a S4 IMEI you could get LTE.
One line was ready for an upgrade.
I got the AT&T S4 and used an 'old' SIM and connected to LTE with no problem.
As soon as I bought the AT&T S4 an email was sent and it provided a process for on line registration of the S4.
I've never seen that before and didn't do it.
I got my GE on AT&T today. My notification bar says LTE. I ran some speed tests and got about 10 mbps down but I am at work in a poor reception area. When I get home I'll try it but I better get at least 40 mpbs down or this is being returned

Why would you call to activate it? Just pop in your Sim card and your good to go. I never had an issue doing this and I get lots of different phones unlocked and from different countries some times.
But I agree why is there no forums for this phone? Does motochopper root method work on this phone and I assume we can use T-Mobile version recoveries and Roms fine on this phone? Does anybody know? Sorry to get off topic.

If you already have a LTE SIM on ATT from another phone just pop it into the GE and it will work just fine. If you do not you will have to go through the process the OP is taking about as the IMEI is not loaded as a LTE device and they will need to put one in for you to activate the LTE.
Saves a lot of time and headaches to already have an LTE SIM for ATT.

Just FYI if you do this and have tethering/hotspot in your plan then you will need to call AT&T so they can add the new IMEI. THey will also delete the old one on file, so if you're into swapping SIMs (I like to go between the iPhone 5 and S4, although in the past few weeks it's been all S4), then you won't be able to turn on hotspot/tethering without arranging a workaround or calling AT&T every time.

just do it and swap the sim card in. i have never had a problem with service or data when getting a new device and putting the AT&T sim in it. went from S3 to S4 that way, also S3 to Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Z to S4, S4 to S3, etc.

Could you guys , anyone, tell me if you can roam on regional towers like verizon does with straight talk smart phones? I've tried selectel in the past and have had nothing but trouble thus far.
I tried activating an old droid x2 on tracfone and when I got it home it wouldn't roam on regoinal towers where verizon and tracfone dumb or feature phones will roam. I was told that tracfone android phones will only operate on verizon towers only. Since I had verizon before, and the tracfone coverage map covers my area, I assumed it would work. After a lot of back and forth travelling 45 min one way to activate on a verizon tower, and it finally did, I had zero coverage once I got about 30 minutes from home and then again none at home either. A tracfone rep as well as other forums said that tracfone androids only operate on real verizon towers, and at my home there's only regional towers.
So does anyone know if straight talk will roam on towers that verizon normally does? I know selectel did without data, voice only, at home on those regional towers, then something screwed up and it now only works on verizon towers or verizon network extenders which I don't own. Since selectel released their 4g sims, my selectel dealer said that would fix it. But no it didn't . I've been unable to get a straight answer from either selectel or the selectel dealer in my area, he originally flashed it to 3g only which he guaranteed me ws not illegal, but I wonder about that. Anyway, They can't get it fixed back properly.
If I can get a straight talk monthly plan cheap enough, I'd gladly switch as long as it roams on regional cdma towers that I have both voice and data on with verizon.
I just can't afford big red anymore, at the moment.
Thanks for any and all responses.
Nope - Straight Talk doesn't do roaming. You pay less, you get less... Don't expect ST to do OTA updates either - they won't!
