[APP] Ubuntu noroot - your opinion needed - Android Apps and Games

No link provided because stupid forums won't allow me that, just search Google Play for "Ubuntu noroot".
This app will install and run a minimal Ubuntu image, no root required, and it will work on a stock ROM (and it does not root your device in the process, it works using fakechroot trick).
The only thing it requires is 500Mb internal phone storage (which is not that unreasonable, my Galaxy Note has 1Gb of that).
It contains huge bunch of bugs, however it provides the ability to run stuff that isn't available for Android, like GIMP or office suites (and I've tested only GIMP).
Most of bugs can be fixed, including 500Mb storage requirement, however that takes crapload of time and effort.
So, is it worth to develop that app any further?
Does no root dependency really give that much ad§vantage over other Linux installers? (and they are not that popular as I see, the most popular one sports 200k-500k downloads. Is that because of root dependency?)
It's possible to wrap individual applications into the fakechroot with minimal Linux environment, maybe it's a better way? What killer apps do you know that are available on Linux but not on Android? (A GIMP for a tablets or Galaxy Note is an obvious choice, however there are already many drawing apps for Android, some of them are even not that bad)

nice idea but i find the fake chroot doesnt do the job...i literaly just see the home screen.but i cant do anythinv else...i cant even log off!!! maybe if you can fix that or even put a official copy of ubuntu on then it might do the job

If this can be made to work or at at least get a good port of openoffice going for my toshiba thrive tab that would be awesome - more than willing to bugtest if needed as this would provide for some functions I have been wanting.

Would love to try ... when it works
I've tried it on a Galaxy Nexus and a Transformer Prime ... both give me only a connection refused.
When I hit the menu button the app crashes.
How can I run it?
LaTex would be nice
If it would "just" to run standard Linux apps like an office; LaTex; Gimp or just MC and joe chroot would be more than enough I suppose, even ssh or sshd should run (on a different port)
It would be worth a try.
Does it work on ICS?

Ah the no root is a big advantage! you can keep warranty, and your boss will no kick you where the sun does not shine for messing up ... um his or hers ... precious device.
On a tablet you could run the androd SDK ... shouldn't google provide such a beast?
Gnu text tools like grep sed and awk, or a bash.
Unleash the full power of a whole, complete linux system? why not?
Is there a compiler?
Nope ...

Is this still in development? I have tried 2 of the 4 versions of Ubuntu offered in this app and it loads but when you try to use the internet is gives "input/output" error. I won't use this app unless the Ubuntu installation has network access. My ultimate goal is to install rTorrent on it as my torrent site doesn't allow mobile app clients.

No, the development has stopped.

Any other way of getting ubuntu capable of running rTorrent? I'm willing to root, but would prefer not to. Also if this app isn't being developed for almost a year, why is it still the #1 hit in the app store when you search ubuntu? Man I can't even imagine how many apps out there must be keylogging and farming data on Android devices...

Because?
Now that it's difficult to get root on the Notes 3, would be very useful.
Are also willing to buy the app.

Epic gravedig!
Ubuntu noroot is now Debian noroot, because XFCE runs way better on underpowered devices than Gnome, and Unity does not run at all.
Also it's faster and more robust.
Google Play, sources on GitHub.

A lot of people including myself are looking for a way to run adaway without rooting theirphone.
Would it be possible to run some kind of ad filtering inside Debian and redirect all traffic through that?
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app

Debian noroot is a regular Android app, it cannot modify the system or other apps, you need root for that.
You can install Iceweasel (unbranded Firefox) with Adblock inside Debian, or Chrome, if you have x86-based device, but it's absolutely not touch friendly, you will need mouse.
It's easier to install Firefox for Android, and then Adblock plugin.

I'm certainly no expert but my idea was to run something like a dns server inside Debian to which all request would be send from android.
Ideally it would use the Debian hosts file.
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app

You need root to override Android DNS settings.
You already can do somethibg like that using Adblock Plus app - it runs proxy HTTP server, and you put 127.0.0.1 to your WiFi advanced settings as HTTP proxy, but it won't work with 3G or 4G.

For WLAN I can change dns without root, but I have to do it for every access point.
Guess I'll just play around a little.
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app

There are no root firewall apps for android. They all work by using the VPN api in android to register a fake VPN. Presumably that would allow dns filtering.

[Q] Remote Desktop to Android

I am a Windows user and i use Remote desktop alot. I have Remote desktop client on my Vibrant and connect to my Windows desktop. but i was wondering if there is an app to connect to android desktop remotely. i know you can connect to linux desktop using VNC. So Linux do support remote desktop is that possible on Android?
This looks like it should suit your needs...
http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.onaips.vnc
That one appears to need root, there is logmein and its ignition for android software (logmein has a free package but the ignition is not free though) or you can try wyse, which works on remote desktop and it isnt free either. Not sure if there are other free ones that does NOT require rooting though.
He wants to remote TO the phone, not from it (the phone as the server, not the client).
As far as I'm aware, any app that does this will need root privileges in order to capture the screen.
Thank you. I tried driod VNC and its really slow. but the good part is the source is available... maybe i will take a look at the it and see if i can do something about it.
Logmein is not free its $30...
Yes. mine is rooted and even unlocked. so i am ready for anything new...
My bad, didn't read the entire post properly
Android Screencast
Android Screencast works pretty well. A bit choppy, but it works. It's in java, so it should work on any OS.

I am aware of that, but i was wondering if some could have the same Chrome on your computer be on the touchpad with those tabs and hopefully the same browsing speed, I pretty much just don't want stock browser anymore.

Sorry mate but for now u only have one option: advanced browser that allow tabs. But that is also functionality wise more or less same as stock browser.

well i obiously posted of what i was looking for and i got the wrong answer, all i got was the chromium in ubuntu which i wasnt looking for.
Even if you could get the sources to compile into something that produces a browser window on the TouchPad, it still wouldn't yield a very pleasant experience. Those sources are for a desktop browser, not a tablet/touch browser. All of the touch-based interaction and gestures you expect on a tablet wouldn't be present, and the UI would be set up for a mouse and keyboard.
Obviously it's possible to change/extend the app for a better tablet experience--the Mozilla guys have done exactly that with Firefox on Android--but it's a HUGE undertaking!
What would be a more realistic goal is trying to figure out what you're missing from Chrome in the TouchPad's browser and try to build a new shell around that browser core similar to Advanced Browser on webOS, Dolphin/Miren on Android, and PerfectBrowser/Atomic Web on iOS. All of these browsers use Webkit as the core rendering engine so the rendered page should be very similar. It's more about the features offered by the browser shell. If your goal is to support Chrome plugins, you're probably SOL, so it's best to decide what are the concrete must-have features that are missing (tabs, form field completion, etc.).
Once the Android port is ready for prime-time, you might just consider moving over to Android and installing either Dolphin or Firefox. Both have many of the features expected from the desktop versions including pretty extensive plugin/extension libraries.
I imagine this response isn't terribly helpful other than in an educational sense, but I hope it helps a bit...

Well, there are two efforts underway, the primary one to get Android going on the TouchPad hardware, but that's instead of webOS (at least in terms of which OS is running at any given time; they're trying to allow dual-boot so you can switch between them during reboot). In that case, you'd just have an Android tablet with Android apps.
The other effort is to try to get Android's Dalvik VM (virtual machine) going under webOS so that you can run Android apps under webOS. This is the approach taken by RIM with the Blackberry Playbook. Obviously that's a much trickier proposition, and some apps reach around the Dalvik VM into the native Android/Linux APIs. I'm not sure how those fit in with the second approach.
Anyway, neither of these will be ready for prime-time for a while, so for now my best advice is to echo what others have said and recommend you buy Advanced Browser. You'll get a tabbed UI, saved passwords (and form fields, I think), etc. It's not quite what you want, but it's the closest you'll get for some indeterminate period of time.

I can't see anyone porting Android browsers such as Dolphin over to webOS, and while it looks like there have been efforts to build Firefox for webOS, it doesn't look like any of them are ready for prime-time. The second of the two options I cited above involves hosting Android apps in webOS directly by implementing a Dalvik VM for webOS. Again, there are folks working on that, but my take is that it has WAY less momentum than the efforts to get Android itself running on the TouchPad hardware, i.e., basically converting the TouchPad from a webOS tablet into an Android tablet.
It's also questionable how well Android apps would run in a Dalvik VM/webOS environment. I know that RIM Playbook's commercial implementation of the same thing requires developers to make some set of changes to their Android apps for them to work on the Playbook, so it's not just a matter of putting a Dalvik VM on webOS, installing the Android Market, and then installing all of the Android apps you want (though that would be SWEET!).
So in summary, right now you would do best to see if Advanced Browser closes the functionality gap enough to keep you happy. For the some indeterminate period of time, it's probably the best option you're going to find.
Of course right after I say something about Dolphin not being ported, it shows up for iOS:
http://www.dolphin-browser.com/
Maybe you should appeal to them to release a version for webOS!
UPDATE: I just sent them a message asking if they'd consider a build for webOS based on that browser component since obviously they can get it working on both the Android and iOS browser components. I don't expect anything to happen, but never hurts to ask.

What have you done with Blue Stacks?

Well this is my first post on XDA, but since BlueStacks came out and I've had a chance to play around with it, I had to ask how other XDA members were utilizing it. I've managed to get ADW Launcher EX on there with a bunch of apps including podcastr, halo reach stats, IMO, 4shared, appBrain and more. When I pull up the emulator the ADW desktop is set to the largest amount of icons on the homepage so it looks just like an Android Desktop OS would look like. I'm pretty excited with home snappy it runs and wondering if this could ever become an actual OS - this is really clean compared to Windows. It definitely needs to be fixed up but I like it.
Seems like BlueStacks might be taking it in a "Premium" direction though. The market won't work so the only way to get APK's is with there cloud app or via 4shared or the browser (apks). Also you have internet but not on your own wifi, I believe it connects to there server and routes you through it so watch what you are doing on it - when you pull up the browser its there homepage and there is no wifi settings even though I turned wifi on with the power widget.
Check out the screenshot and tell me what your doing with BlueStacks
This software dose not have a proxy so don't worry about it, its just a virtual player and its still a baby.
Here is a little post I did on FB about what I use it for
Hey guys, the posts have been a little slow so I thought I would as a question that we all can reply to, when you do use bluestacks what do you use it for?
I use mine for testing my apps I make or apps I want to use on none supported android devices, I also sometimes use it to play that piggy game that comes with it lol I also use it for web dev when I want to see how it looks like without finding my phone out lol
I still don't feel bluestacks is able to do what we all need it to do, I feel its down the bluestacks trying to limit us on how we use it and the player is good but at the moment still very unstable, I really hope they will get better and I keep watching, what about you what do you use it for and what's your view on it so far.
I would give there app 6/10

I use bluestacks as a small window I made gizmostack that lets you resize the window, so I hope this lets you see one others might use it for good luck.

I need a new app!

I am hoping someone can help me, since I am having a problem. The problem is that I am bored with the current "regular" section of apps on the market. I want to find something that is useful (even revolutionary!) but I cant find anything. I dont care about games, photo editing apps, music apps, "juice savers", or any of the other crap available on the market. I am looking for a really cool developer type app that typical users dont care about. My phone is rooted so basically the sky is the limit. Does anyone have any suggestions for me??
Hmmm.. maybe make your own I'll test out for you.. I'm is same boat bored with all the apps. I have all the required software to make apps just not sure where to begin..
I wouldnt be opposed to writing my own, but I am looking for inspiration first. Thats why I want to see some of the innovative apps out there. The problem is there is nothing particularly exciting, from what I can find at least. I am sure there are people who have developed something cool I just need to find it!
Im currently doing some learning ARM/x86 assembly for embedded stuff. Im also currently working with the android kernel. Sometimes i like to sit with my phone instead of a laptop here is a list of apps and stuff i use on the phone to make things go smooth.
(market) droidedit pro - this is the best easiest code editor ive used so far, its light it supports a ton of languages and has sftp and ssh command support. The ssh makes it easy to build stuff on your main remote machine.
(market)x-plore - pretty sweet file manager. it is a double tree view that can connect to the lan ftp and picassa. It also has total root access. I can basically work with any files even on typically read only directorys.
(market)ideterminal - basically the android sdk on your phone along with java compilers and ton of command line goodies.
Add a debian chroot to your phone this opens up so many possibilitys like to vnc into an x server on the phone and compile natively without the hassle of small screen no keyboard.
ssh combined with dropbox is also your friend.

I also mess around with embedded ARM devices for fun. My current project is FreePBX (Asterisk VoIP system) that I installed on a SheevaPlug "plug computer". At the moment I am trying to figure out the best way for me to incorporate my Android devices with that platform. The two apps I like am currently using a lot are:
1) FING. Its basically a network analyzing program that tells you about all devices attached to a network. If you are familiar with the older PC program called [email protected] this is essentially the Android version of that.
2) ConnectBot. A fairly straight forward SSH/Telnet client with a few extras.
I am really on the lookout for these kinds of apps. If you can think of others that might be interesting I would love to know. We have someone similar interests so I am curious what else you like.
If you are at all interested in my PlugPBX deployment you can check it out at the following thread.

I actually had downloaded fing but it wont work on my phone i have no idea what the deal is when i from command line or any program need to ping i get an error like ICMP operation failed, i dont have a problem with any networking software i.e ssh, VNC, remote web desktop (this is a cool toy, makes sms on pc simple also).
Oh ya there is also a dynamic DNS app to so you can use something like no-ip.com and to get a static host name for your phone, for free. Like mike.no-ip.com would connect you to your phone from anywhere, the client program on the phone updates the DNS server that provides your dynamic DNS name. I guess the app is generic and works with most if not all dynamic dns hosts!
Im not really into voip, i just havent ever done anything with it. although i only have 300 minutes and unlimited data so voip may be a good idea, i just dont know any free service.

Android Emulator within Chrome

Entertain me for a little bit on this one. I'm using Chrome OS Lime on my laptop, and was in lurve with the speed and boot time it provides, but the weirdness that comes with having less than perfect web standard support is starting to get to me. So I figured, what if there could be an emulator that could run Android under Chromium, and you can vnc into it, similar to the Ubuntu launcher app. That way, you could light up the Android Emulator for Netflix and games and local operations, and kill it dead when you need the speed. Anyway, considering Android is made of Java, and Chrome has the native client, it shouldn't be that big a stretch to set up a port, right?

Let me rephrase. Is it possible to emulate the Android OS or Apps wholesale within Chromium OS, without cutting the feet out from under the operating system? And where would be the place to go to find out more about arm emulation or 32/64 bit Android, if not here.
