Shipping phone to HTC. Should I unroot? - HTC Sensation

I'm having problems with my phone shutting off randomly when the battery is below 50 or 60 percent. Saw a thread where someone sent it to HTC and they changed the mother board and it was fixed.
I called HTC and they are having this issue reported a lot lately and confirmed that the motherboard needs to be changed.
Should I bring this bad boy back to stock or does the software not matter because they will just be checking the hardware?

I would unroot it I were you. I wouldn't want them to say that they will not repair my phone because it has been rooted.

Hey there. Yep I had this problem. Flash an official RUU and send it back. Thats what I did. They don't want to be seeing a custom recovery nor ROM, as they'll say it's your fault and void your warranty. I also went back so S-ON. They pretty much changed all the guts of my phone and it's been working sweet....So far so good =)

If you send off your phone they will repair it, they always do but with payment

Dead Desire S - Any help?

Hi All,
My Desire S decided to die today for no apparent reason:
I had been browsing the internet before jumping in my car and switching on the bluetooth. I had been driving for about 10 mins when I got a call through on my cars bluetooth system, about 3 mins in to the call the caller disappeared even though the car said it was still connected.
I pulled over to check the phone and found it was frozen on the call screen. So I disconnected the battery and powered it up, but it could only get the the HTC splash and sound before the screen turned black and the unit became unresponsive.
A few more tries gave the same issue, so i decided to boot it into recovery to do a full wipe, this completed successfully, but the phone was still doing the same thing.
After removing the battery again the phone will now not turn on at all and does not respond to the charger (no led). I've tested another battery, but still no luck, and tried the bat from my DS in my sisters DS and it works fine.
So my phone is completely dead it seems. I should probably send it off to HTC for a repair, but the problem is that the phone is S-OFF and i have no way of getting it S-ON while it's bricked.
Can anybody suggest anything?
I'm not having much luck with HTC as my mozart is at the repair centre as we speak with a bootloader issue... I might have to choose another manufacturer in future
PS: It was S-OFF but running stock software
there is not much to say...try to remove battery and wait for a while...if issue still persist htc service is only hope

Thanks, i'll leave it overnight and see how it looks in the morning. Luckily i have an optimus one spare that has always served me well... It just does not come close to my DS.
I've just had a development!
When i plug it into my windows 7 pc it recognises it as a device "QHSUSB_DLOAD" but fails to install a driver for it.
Can anybody elaborate on what this is?
Thanks!

Afraid this is not good news...you'll need to reign the device and claim under warranty, I wouldn't worry of you made it soff they probably won't be able to tell, read the recent posts on the ext4 recovery thread as same thing happened to someone else

Ok thanks for letting me know. I must remember not to customize my HTC's in future...
Is not customize`s fault is yours because you removed the battery when it was still working (freeze yes but chip is still working) :| How ben_pyett said you must send it to htc... there are similar posts around here and all removed the battery > htc service ...sry mate

Shame the manual doesn't say so then!
Well i've got it booked in for repair.
Has anybody here had many dealings with HTC Repair, or Regenersis (the UK repairer)?
The guy I spoke to over email (i got fed up of waiting on the phone) about my Desire S was a complete retard. He sent me the same email 3 times in reply to me telling me to restore factory settings... Each time I told him it was not possible as the phone would not switch on...
He then told me that UPS could not pick up my phone for at least 2 weeks, this is despite the fact that I sent my Mozart in for repair last week and was told at least 48 hours. So I would have to find my own way to post or courier it.
Then he books the phone in and sends me the 'Tick Sheet' with the phone information and problem description and in the problem description box he wrote "HELLO"??? WTF? What sort of jokers are these?
At least the woman I spoke to about my Mozart was helpful, she actually gave a meaningful response to my questions, but even she got the problem description wrong, writing just "Reboot Cycle" which is way to vague considering the problem it actually had.

sensation not working, no led light, is it a brick?

hey ev1
yesterday i was using my sensation without problem. ate a dinner in the shopping center and after that i tried to call someone but when pressing the power button on the sensy nothing happened. then when i went to the car tried to charge the phone but no led light came on (orange charging led). I'm unable to power on the fone since then.
anyone experienced the same and was able to solve the problem without taking the phone to warranty?
i had android revolution hd latest rom. and my phone is from ebay, my best guess is that it's unlocked but not from the factory, and that voids the warranty in my country, so I'm not sure what to do.
tnx for helping in advance
remove battery for little while, place it back and try charging again
if it doesn't light up, just leave it there a little while ... 15mins? 30mins?
try and power up after. gd luck
I think it's CWM (not charging when off)

did something like that, charged it for whole night but no success...
if the battery is totally dead would the charging led light up? or the phone powers up?
Try plugging the phone in via usb or ac. Then try the battery pull and power up. You may need to either buy a battery charger or another battery to power up so you can get into recovery and flash a different clockwork version.
It sounds like the clockwork charging issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198585
Once you get it started make sure you have the latest recovery. You can update using Rom Manager.
well it seems its not the battery. put an evo3d battery inside which is fully charged and it still won't turn on phone into the trash i think
or you have any other ideas?
Not into the trash, back to HTC or send it to me! ;-)

I repair phones for a living and I have personally seen 4 sensations come in for this exact reason.
it seems, even mid-use, that it powers down for some reason, and just doesnt come back. It happens to rooted and non-rooted alike, and I threw my entire arsenal at these things and they dont respond again. it jsut seems to be a factory defect. One that I really hope doesnt happen to mine :[
sorry to say, but in my professional opinion, theres not a lot you can do
I seem to have the same issue.
Did a Reboot, and then no more.
Had the Charger cable in.
Now the only thing that happens when i connect to USB, is a QHSUSB_DLOAD device ( Unkown device , no driver found. )
I only had it for 1 day...
Edit: now i have to wait 2 to 5 working days for a new one. poor me.
Put a multimeter to the battery, 4,6Volt so no problem there.
I had rooted my friends Sensation and running a Android Revolution. The same thing happened to her phone I'm trying to boost the battery to see if I can get some action but, it's not looking good.
She had insurance on the phone and said she lost it, so she's getting a new one, but I'm glad to know that it might have happened anyways. I wasn't overclocking the phone, and I didn't flash a new radio (which are two things that can cause bricks right?)
Is there anything else I might try? Use it as a paperweight? lol
Edit: To clarify, the phone was working fine, and just randomly rebooted and then became completely unresponsive. My friend battery pulled as it was completely frozen, when she put the battery back in, nothing happened. No LED when charging, no booting, nothing.

Hey so did you or your friend manage to fix her phone or find the cause? I've been flashing Windows Mobile Roms before and Sensation is my first Android phone, I definitely want to flash Custom Roms on it too, but these random bricks are putting me off for now.

I work for the bestbuy group and i can tell you that if it was bought in the uk, it should be absolutely fine to send back, so long as it hasn't got water damage it would be cool to send off.
HTC decide if it's under warranty and whether or not it has liquid damage.
An engineer won't touch it (in carphone warehouse) if they're not qualified.
If your in the UK, call this number 08719090109 it's a lot quicker than going into a carphone warehouse, you'll wait 2 weeks if you go in store, 4 - 5 days if you call that number and ship it yourself.
Some carphones have fools working for them, but believe me lad, i'm no idiot.

A bad idea, the person in the shop will do an ESN check and see that the phone wasn't even bought from them, or a return, ppl try these things all the time, they don't get away with it, unless the consultant is an absolute mushroom.
My advice, just send the thing back to HTC.

Shouldn't make any difference, are you in the UK? We're they from the UK? You will have to send it back to the place where they bought it from, it's less than a year since the sensation was released so it is certainly under warranty.
Just send it back after you've tried everything, and it seems that you have.
Did you try boosting the battery? Sometimes this has an effect, although it would seem from what you've said that something a little more difficult to fix has gone wrong.
Hope you get it sorted.
PS: Don't go into a carphone and tell them that you bought it from them, because they'll check and you'll look like a div, find out where the person on ebay bought it from and send it back to there with the advice sheet / receipt you got from ebay to HTC or at least call / email to see what's required to send it back.
Good luck m8.

My Sensation froze and died, has any others experienced this?

Everyone, I am starting this thread with one purpose and that is to see if others have experienced this problem. Also if so how many people have and if it is a major issue or just a freak thing that happened to me.
Ok my Sensation was running the stock ROM for the TMOUS Sensation which was the recent OTA update. This also means I had reverted back to the stock recovery too when I went back to the stock ROM well over a month ago. My Sensation was still Super CID though as far as I know. Now that should feel everyone in on the software that was on my Sensation.
Now for the problem, I was typing a text message to a friend this morning and as I was typing my message my Sensation froze up. This alone was odd as my Sensation had only federal up once before sense I purchased it back in October. Anyway I knew I had to pull the battery to reset my phone. But I was on my morning break at work and break time was over so I just put my phone in my front sweater pocket and walked the 5 minute or so walk back to where I was working on the job site. I pulled my phone out of my sweater pocket and noticed the screen was black. I pressed the power button expecting my phone to wake up but it did not. I pulled the back cover off and pulled the battery out for a full minute and reinserted it. My phone still would not turn on. Also to add my camera flash flashed once when I reinserted my battery. Anyway I repeated this process several times and still my phone did not turn on, but the flash only flashed that one time.
I got home and tried my wife's battery from her Sensation but still my phone SD not turn on. I tried my battery in her Sensation and her phone turned on fine with my battery. So I concluded my Sensation was screwed and proceeded to call T-Mobile costumer service and spend about a hour on the phone with them until they agreed to send me a replacement Sensation.
If anyone else has experienced or experiences this in the future please post here in this thread.
Edit: Thank gosh I still have my HD2 as a back up device.
Edit 2: I came across a post that lead me to a thread started by XDA Senior Member namila007. It had other XDA members that report their Sensations dieing in the same manor.
Happened to a Desire S once. Froze, remove & re-installed battery the phone did booted to the splash screen only, but not any further. Replaced complete board under warranty.
Well this does not happen to most people but you should go for a new one under your warranty but sorry I do but know how to fix the problem
Nope, but I can say, that I am did the same thing as you did. Like reverting back to stock, and still having supercid. I've done that 2 month ago? Nothing wrong with.
That sucks man. I had that happen to a vibrant i had.

Yea, this happened to me too. I was playing some xbox 360, went to check the time on my phone...Wound up a few hours later feeling like a turd and waiting for a replacement from Tmobile.
No idea what happened. The last thing it did was make a noise when I plugged it into my laptop, prompted my computer to install drivers (failed) and then mentioned that dreaded message that implies the phone is needing to be flashed by the factory. (QHSUSB_DLOAD)
If you see your computer mention QHSUSB_DLOAD, then your phone is 100% bricked.
Matt
Just wanted to say thanks for the replies to all and thanks for everyone that has viewed this thread. And just in case anyone missed it in the OP, I am currently waiting on my replacement Sensation from T-Mobile. It will not arrived until the 25th of January. Again thank goodness I still have my trusty HD2 or I would be without a phone until the 25th.
Now to the post above me, I have not even tried to connect my Sensation to my computer because it will not even power on what so ever. The charge indicator led does not even come on when you connect the charger. So I highly doubt I would even get anything at all if I connected it to my computer. But I might just plug it into my computer out f curiosity to see what does happen.

Hi,
Hey,I am really sorry to hear about your phone.
It is very rare that people report total failure like yours,so I would imagine that it is just a freak situation.
I am also glad that you are getting a replacement without any problem.
Other than that ,hope all is well with you.
I assume this is quite a common problem. I received my sensation xe just a few days before the new year it was constantly over heating down the bottom where the touch buttons are causing it to shutdown / reboot this was when doing basic tasks like browsing the web. I then had my phone completely die a couple of days ago.
I took the phone into a vodaphone store yesterday and they exchanged it with a new handset.. I haven't had any problems yet.
I was reading through the Sensation Unbricking Project thread and found the below quoted post. I thought I would add it here as it matches what happen to my original Sensation

Ha ha thanks but I have had my replacement phone for at least a month or more. I actually revived this thread because I finally found another post by another member that claims to have had their Sensation. I feel like they way my Sensation died is a pure hardware failure.
I started this thread in hopes that others that had the miss fortune of this happening to them could find this thread and know that it had happen to someonelse. Also so maybe a fair consinsus of what may be the cause, if it is just random, and some kind of idea of a percentage of devices it happens to.
I see that namila007 also started a thread about his Sensation dieing in the same way. It is a copleofother people that have posted in his thread saying that their Sensation deied in the same way. I am going to up date the OP with a link to his thread and post in his thread as well.

Looks like it's another one. I am beginning to think this problem is related to some of the firmwares we use since it's happening with different ROMs.
You can try the various things people tell you to do....but if it's unresponsive completely..even if you plug to computer...then so far..no one has really provided a solution or reason for it.
You can see multiple post about it. Happened with mine too...running and then stuck after a long constant tone...then it never turned on again.
If your still under factorywarranty which you should be. Call HTC say phone won't turn on pay shipping fee and they will send you a new or refurbished phone either way it's better than no phone.

I don't think so...
the bootloader unlocking (as htc wrote) void the software warranty
so, if is hardware related you are lucky, they will repair it
try to bring it to htc and say that you did nothing, it just shut down...don't say that you unlocked it or anything like...maybe they will just give you a new one, they can't check if you did something to the phone

Unlocking your bootloader voids your warranty, no matter how you unlocked it, but you have. If HTC gets the phone to power on, no doubt they will check the bootloader status. If they find you've unlocked the bootloader, they will charge you for the repair and damage fees, including the shipping cost.
It depends where you send your phone, if it's a hardware fault they might not charge you, but as I said it all depends on the Service Center.

Major problems with One S

Just bought a One S and it's giving me major battery and overheating problems.
Over the first few days, I've just had just ridiculous battery life drain. I saw that the phone was "awake" a lot while I had the screen off so it was probably an app that was causing a wakelock issue. I did a restore using the hardware buttons from powered-off method and didn't install any apps (except the swift key beta) with only 1 email account syncing. Today at work, I used it minimally (maybe 30 texts?) and it was at 48% at the end of the day. Not great, but manageable. Tonight after 30 minutes of surfing the net, I've killed another 30% and my phone got so hot to the touch that I couldn't even hold it. 30% of drain over 30 minutes of usage is just horrible. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal, or did I just get a dud?
Edit: And I didn't post under the other threads because my case is just an extreme. When I'm talking about extreme heat, the back of the phone must've been at least 80 degrees celcius. And with that kind of battery drain, I wouldn't even get 2 hours of use.
Seriously, take it in for service. That is a defect.

Unfortunately, I picked this up used, I don't think I'll have the ability to bring it in for repairs. Is there anything software related that I can do? Is there a way to reflash the kernel? I think it might be linked to a bad software install. Wakelock is usually software related, not hardware.

Call HTC, it should have a one year warranty. I'm curious about the warranty, since I purchased mine used too. If you bought it on eBay or through PayPal, you should immediately contact the seller and open a case if they don't respond.

when i bought my htc touch pro on ebay, I sent it in for repairs 2 times to htc...
I was flashed to metropcs, they didnt care, they restore it to stock, and replaced a few parts,
all i did was send them my ebay papers that i bought it.... they honored the 1 year policy..
So there's no way to do a full restore of the phone? Like from the computer. I wanna try all the software fixes I can before I send it in to HTC.
In that case you will need to run the correct RUU matching your carrier, it will restore everything. Try a full reset through settings before this though, see if that works first.
Heres a list of RUU's

If someone flashed a bad Rom (bad downloaded version) that can happen, I've had a good Rom not settle correctly and cause over heating. Flash something different.

Tried a software reset through settings, that didn't help either.
Edit: That seems like a list of One X RUU's. There isn't a Rogers One S. I have the Telus One S.
Double edit: It seems that people in other threads say use the Rogers RUU for the Telus One S. Is that right?
