Crazy Gorilla glass mishap?

I dropped my sensation today on the screen and thought oh ****...flipped it over and it looked fine..had some dirt on it so i wiped it on my shirt...shazam screen shattered! WTF! Maybe it was cracked under the screen? Its got a hell of a spider web crack on the entire screen...Ill throw some pics up later.

Reminds me of tempered glass. Sometimes it explodes from just looking at it wrong lol.

Yeahit just sucks cause it looked fine and then i wiped it and it cracked...pretty strange

How is that strange? You DROPPED IT ON THE SCREEN. Of COURSE there will be problems if you drop it on the screen. Everyone has this misunderstanding of what Gorilla Glass is. Gorilla Glass ≠ Bullet Proof. It's still glass, it's just been formulated to scratch less easily then normal glass. If it was a polycarbonate like Lexan and shattered, that would be strange.
Remember kids. It's GLASS.

I realize its glass and maybe you didnt read my post. I assumed it would be broken when i picked it up. The strange part is that it broke when i wiped the dirt off of it. So for future reference read the post first and you wont have to **** for no reason afterwards.

The formula must be wrong for my device because my screen has scratched easier than on any other device I have owned.

I will have to agree with that. They must have used the wrong snake oil, because my device too has scratched more easily than any cell-phone I have ever owned.

I didn't mean to come off like a ****. I did read your first post, hence why I quoted it. I guess the comment was taken out of context because it wasn't necessarily directed specifically to you (yes I realize I quoted only your comment). When you drop/chip glass and it has a small micro-fracture, it may look fine until more pressure is added, and it gives.
Think about a windshield. That tiny little chip that the rock that fell off of the back of that cement mixer you were following on the highway made looks innocent enough, until you hit a pothole and it shatters the glass.
As far as scratches, it only scratches when a material harder than it (diamonds, some keys, quartz particles, sand) rubs it. I just keep mine very protected in my old school G1 sleeve. Mine has no scratches at all and I touch it alot. I don't know how everyone is managing to scratch their glass so easily.

I dont want to carry a phone in a pouch...I would rather risk it than to have it ring and be muffled and also hard to get to. Plus I dont see that fitting very well in my pockets with my keys/ciggs/lighter...I already ordered a replacement digitizer for 50 bucks so its not really a huge deal..Mainly I was surprised that it didnt break on impact but only when I decided to wipe off the dirt..Im not saying gorilla glass is trash cause it does a damn good job of not scratching when i throw it in my pocket with keys or coins. Now im just wondering if this replacement will be of the same quality.

That is what I was going to say. Glass will get microfractures from impacts because it is so brittle. I used to fix rock chips on windshields and had an experience where the windshield cracked as soon as I had finished repairing the chip. Big ol' spider crack, lol. All I did was remove the cloth covering the repair so the resin could cure in the sun. But from the pressure the resin injector and the sudden temperature variation with the sun, everything went to hell.
Also, the stronger something becomes, the more brittle it becomes.
But that really sucks. Is it still covered under the warranty? I bet you could repair the cracked screen yourself if there is a tear-apart video on youtube.

My son dropped his today Everything still works but the glass is cracked all over the screen.
Anybody know the price for repair if we send it off to HTC?

Mine has a bunch of micro-scratches, but they're only visible if the screen is off and if you've got a lot of sunlight on it. Gorilla glass is nice.

i emailed htc about it and i think they said $170. it could be more $ if its more than just the screen broken.

So my daughter just cracked the screen on my skyrocket, anyone know a reputable place to buy a replacement LCD screen? Or is anyone looking to sell one just pm me.

its not gorilla glass is how she broke it...No where on Samsungs site or Cornings site do they say the skyrocket has it, and in fact i have contacted both and have gotten this response via email from samsung

So, Im hearing some people post on forums that the Digitizer is glued to the Glass and is separable, meaning the repair will cost way less than paying for a whole new digitizer + LCD + Glass assembly.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
I have a nasty spider web break on my phone but can not afford to pay $160 when I paid $150 for the phone! (I know thats the contract price)

I don't think you can separate them and manage to reuse the circuitry, were talking less 1mm thick. I've replaced glass before, next time I'll probably send it to Sammy.

Replacing the glass is not too difficult if you know your way around computer hardware. What makes it a pain is how small all the connections and ribbon cable clasps are and ect.
Here's a link to a video tutorial on the Atrix to give you an idea of what you can expect. About an hour to replace.

I got a used S2 skyrocket off ebay. Only the outer glass is cracked.

Tried and failed... That is a nice video, but my understanding is that the Galaxy S II and III are different for repairs. The III you can replace just the top glass, but with the II it's easiest to replace the whole LCD and digitizer + glass. HTCs on the other hand have the top glass and digitizer as one replaceable unit.
I had this idea I could get the LCD lifted up and then use fishing line like floss to separate the glass and digitizer. But I didn't get that far. I didn't have enough heat and trying to remove the LCD, it busted. The OLED is like a brittle film and the adhesive used is crazy, so that method was doomed. I think if I had a different approach things might have gone better.
Now I have a worthless disassembled phone waiting on the prices of the whole LCD to come back down to sane levels. They were like $121,$131,$155, last check they're $200 on eBay. Makes me want to cuss!
I saw a video on YouTube where the top glass was busted open, not just cracked. I think it was a plain Galaxy S II. They used playing cards to dig in between the glass and digitizer layers. Then you clean off the digitizer and tape your new clean glass down and it would be fixed. I think if you could further break the top glass to pry it up and be able to dig in between the glass and the digitizer, that's how I would try to replace just the glass.

So in the video they had their screen/digitizer/glass removed from their phone chassis. I wouldn't go that far fearing you'd break the LCD. You may not have to do more than removing the battery before you get started.
Another thing the Skyrocket top glass needs this double sided clear tape. I presume this is because the digitizer is separate from the top glass and needs to be connected right to the glass instead of just held on with the double sided tape on the edges alone. I imagine that that could work if you pressed extra hard on your touches, but I don't know. I found this tape from EtradeSupply.com - they have a Youtube video I watched over and over. But shipping to the states is $15, adding to the expense.

I did the same thing. I got the old glass seperated with a hair dryer, but messed up some of the amoled screen and the glass was never fully flush after the reglue.
Super Annoying. :/ ending up buying the new screen kit on ebay for like 120. :/

Repair Follow-up
Yeah, I was able to get a new housing and screen assembly for my Skyrocket and all is well now. My phone is like new.
I did find some newer repair videos that use the playing card trick for removing just the cracked glass.

The quick version is that he says stick the phone in the freezer for a couple of minutes, because that will weaken the digitizer glue/tape. Then use your card to dig the glue out, pushing it out of the edge of the glass in a slow, lengthy process. He had success this way on a similar phone. I read elsewhere that Goo Gone cleaner could be used to remove any adhesive residue from the digitizer.
One thing I would worry about with this process is air bubbles in the new digitizer tape, since this other video has an industrial vacuum pressure machine as part of the final assembly process of the screens.

Related is an issue of dust, since a spec of lint or dust will cause an air bubble, as I just discovered applying a screen protector onto my Skyrocket.
So this little "$15" repair can add up with the digitizer adhesive and buying the Goo Gone and rubber gloves (which I didn't even use) and all of the rest. Just going for the new display comparatively is easy.

[Q] Samsung Infuse Cracked Glass

I have a samsung infuse from AT&T and recently dropped my phone.
The glass is completely cracked; however, the touch screen is working like normal.
Is there a way to replace the cracked glass only?
If it is possible, does anyone have instructions or a guide on how to fix the cracked glass?
Or, would I just have to file a claim with AT&T Insurance?

Even though eBay sellers have the Infuse outer glass for sale separately, it seems like pulling the glass off of the LCD/digitizer without destroying it is going to be extremely difficult. This must be the instructions to remove outer screen because I have seen a video to replace the digitizer and screen assembly and it just popped off after removing some ribbon cables. I am waiting for outer screen ,outer casing and battery cover to arrive from China. Cost $30 with shipping. Will look brand new on outside if it works. I'll let you guys know how I make out.
Edit....After removing top glass with razor blade as it is fused to LCD with glue I lost response to touch. Ordered new LCD and digitizer with bezel (plastic frame that screen is attached to and circuit board mounts on) . I am not sure if I could get it to work if I could glue or fuse new top glass back on. Scratched the heck out of it anyways. Live and learn, if anyone else had better luck I would like to know.

I had great luck with mine. I started by heating the outer glass with a blow dryer and used a card from a regular deck of playing cards starting from top to bottom of the screen to get it started. After i got it about half way i didn't even use the blow dryer anymore just allot of playing cards. You have to be extremely careful on the top right of the LCD not to damage the ribbon for the digitzer. I got a few minor scratches on the LCD from shards of old glass but you can only see them if the screen is off and you look really hard. It pretty much looks brand new now. I just used thin double sided tape on the outside edges of the new glass for now as i haven't found a permanent way to hold down the glass yet. I will probably leave it that way so next time it breaks i don't have to go through the long process of separating the glass from the LCD again. In my opinion it was well worth the $10 and the labor to replace just the outer glass rather than the $130-$150 for the replacement LCD/digitizer and outer glass.

Towards the top, the smaller pieces of glass have begun to fall out. It's not really dangerous, but I am kinda nervous of cutting my finger one of these times.
I've been searching on Google and Youtube to find an answer to my question, but I can't seem to find a real, definitive answer. I want to know if the glass/lens of the digitizer can be safely removed from the rest of the digitizer?
I know all the tricks of using a heat gun, and a little scraper, but I also heard that the digitizer itself is like 1mm thick and VERY delicate?
So I went ahead and bought the glass off of Ebay for like $7. Then I received the glass in the mail, and got kinda apprehensive of doing it.
Another question: If I successfully remove all the old glass, how do I secure the new lens to the digitizer? Is there some sort of glue I need, or is it friction from the chrome trim ring?

Good luck man.....i tried and its a PITA!!!! Haha my dumbass ended up cracking my digitizer/LCD so i had to shell out another $130 for a new one......i hope u have better luck than me tho.....

That's EXACTLY what I'm worried about. But I guess my screen is done for either way. It's terribly cracked and falling apart now, so it can't get much worse.

In the accessories section a guy claims to have done it and used double sided tape to put the glass back on......idk tho i heated it up so much i burned my finger wen i touched the glass and i still couldn't separate it from the digitizer.....id say just buy a new digitizer......it isnt hard to replace.....i bought the digitizer alone without the housing around it and saved about $25.....

Nope. It didn't work. I broke it. I kept using my heatgun, but the stupid adhesive just wouldn't give up. I turned up the heat a little bit, and suddenly a section of the digitizer just blew up into a dull green color. I guess that means I fried the pixels. Even after I burned the digitizer, the adhesive was still very strong. I think this is actually impossible. In order to loosen the adhesive, you would have to achieve a temperature far past the point of damaging the digitizer.
Another concept:
I had MANY small pieces of glass. I kept thinking "I wish I had nice, big pieces of glass. Then this would go so much faster". When I did try to lift a larger chunk of glass, the combined tension of the adhesive over the whole surface area caused the piece of glass to flex and crack.
So when you try to remove a large piece of glass, it then breaks into a hundred tiny pieces of glass and you're screwed even more.

Even after I burned the digitizer, the adhesive was still very strong. I think this is actually impossible. In order to loosen the adhesive, you would have to achieve a temperature far past the point of damaging the digitizer.
Another concept:
I had MANY small pieces of glass. I kept thinking "I wish I had nice, big pieces of glass. Then this would go so much faster". When I did try to lift a larger chunk of glass, the combined tension of the adhesive over the whole surface area caused the piece of glass to flex and crack.
So when you try to remove a large piece of glass, it then breaks into a hundred tiny pieces of glass and you're screwed even more.

I just did the exact thing. eBay has the part it's easy to fix I did it. Just don't get the acrylic one. And ask before buying even if the picture looks like the OEM glass one make sure! Unless you want the acrylic one it's less prone to cracking but will scratch.

Simply being in my pocket. You'll see on the forums this is happening to a lot of people. The consensus is that LG phoned it in on the camera glass quality.

Yeh, I noticed all the glass problems, am I lucky or what, no problem for me with any problem mention in this forum about the glass built or any other stuff, and I had my G5 from day 1 after exchange it once, but I can remember the reason why I exchanged it.:fingers-crossed:
Just looking back at my camera len, I do have a deep scratch, but lucky I have a PET lens protector on, so it's only the protector that is scratched, at least I do have 3 spare one left.

Yeah I thought the same thing before I pulled the phone out of my pocket, nothing out of the ordinary had happened, and it was mysteriously broken. It's going to be like a recall if it gets really bad...

It doesn't take much pressure to brake it but it doesn't just do it on its own. This isn't the 6p being too tight around the glass and it breaking from expansion @kchannel9 just lift off what's left of your glass and peel it off no need to open the phone up. Just make sure no glass is left in it when you put the new one on. It should come with adhesive. And don't touch the lens! Cover it up if it breaks all the way it out or tape over it if it is just cracked to protect the camera! I might get the acrylic one to put over my glass replacement one now that I see how fragile it is.

It's simple to replace. Mine cracked and I ordered 2 off eBay. I had to replace it for a warranty exchange. Just use tweezers to get under the glass in the crack and peel it out. Insert the new adhesive sticker, then lay the new glass down. Takes about 5-10 minutes.

Just replaced mine, was easy. The acrylic one I got from eBay/China works fine, though there are visible lines in the acrylic, it did not seem to effect the pictures taken. If I find with more testing that it does, I will get the glass again instead, and also add a glass protector as well. But for now seems fine.

Ok nevermind, after taking some pictures in full sun it is apparent that the acrylic adds a ghostly fuzziness to the images where there once was impressively sharp clarity. Going to order the glass version and a tempered glass protector for that piece as well. Really annoying, you'd think a $700 flagship phone wouldn't have this issue.
