[Q] cant s off (hboot 1.27)can i root? - HTC Sensation

Hi all
I was hoping to change the rom on my sensation running (OTA) ICS with Hboot 1.27.00 but failed at the first hurdle of S Off.
obviously after searching i realise that i cant S Off at the moment so have decided to hard reset my phone ( it had a few issues)
when i first got the phone i temp rooted it and then used bloat freezer to get rid of the bloatware.
Since i have a bit of a wait for a S off method is it possible to root it or any other way to get rid of the bloatware?
thanks

ohh yeah...it seems requirement is HTCdev unlocked bootloader and root to device....so you need to get a recovery for that...
do the HTCdev unlock
and then try to flash 4EXT recovery from this thread (try the latest one 1.0.0.5 RC2)
4EXT recovery
its an app...just install the app onto your device and then install it
if it fails...then flash recovery using this image
dropbox link
keep the recovery image in your adb folder ,then go to fastboot mode and flash the recovery
command to flash "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
once you got recovery you need to follow step 3 of this guide to get root...
then follow the steps in SOFF thread

thanks guys
wish i hadnt had the ota update now!!!
seems its now much more complicated.
when i have a few hours ( maybe a day since im such a noob) i will git it all a go
or maybe wait for the revolutionary to become available
thanks

You could try Unlimited or read more about it here.

HTCDev unlock is all you need for root and custom ROMs, if you don't like the look of S-OFF, you don't need it.

Im kinda new in sensation bought it 2 weeks ago so please dont blame me for asking All I want to know is what kind of benefits is giving us s-off if we still can install custom roms with same firmware as official ICS? I read here on xda that it unlocks some commnads but no-one said which one exactly :/ Since most of the roms are on newest firmware (official one) it looks like it has almost no sense to do s-off if u dont want go back to ginger roms am I right?

sab3r
i was thinking the same
what i would like to do with my phone is to get a stable custom rom that gives me sense 3.6 ICS and the overclocking to the xe spec.
I know the best option is ARHD and if s off is of no use to me then i guess i could go the htc dev route. its just having decided to hard reset the phone and realising the complete faff i dont want to mess around too much.

s-off gives you the benefit of changing recovery , almost stable sense 4 ROMS, blazing fast AOSP roms, and awesomely great kernels...ohh i forgot the best of all MODS ...so its your call...but seeing you did ICS update OTA you can't SOFF now through revolutionary
in my case...i just got Sensation..but im enjoying Beats...4x improved camera and video (the video quality with the MOD is godly now...compared to ****ty stock compressed video)...also i got a MOD which can enable beats over speaker....i got DOLBY mobile (sound app) of xperia...beats + dolby mobile is awesomely great for music lovers....and if you dig further...you'll have hella lot of oppurtunities

if you got a chance to soff..then i recommend you to do it...whatever you are doing right now can be achieved via HTCdev route but its bit complicated to get everything working...so your call
btw SOFF on 1.27 is possible now but for that you need to have HTCdev Unlocked bootloader (may void your warranty)

I agree but as some tutorial said you can install recovery and root without s off all u need is just htcdev unlock so going forward you can install every android 4.0 rom The problem is that the version of firmware has to be 3.32.xxx.x (ICS update OTA) but as for as I know most of the 4.0 roms needs that anyway :]

Yeah you are right but when firmware gets updated... It's a problem again... Also not all people got ICS.. For them soff is required... In your case yeah HTCdev unlock will do but at the cost of your warranty...

Ofc if they dont have ICS they can still use rev method and remember that the newest s off method still needs HTCdev unlock that means u lose warranty anyway :]

[HOW-TO] ROOT TMOUS OTA 2.3.4 (if you lost root)

For those that lost root due to the TMOUS OTA 2.3.4 update, here's how I got it back.
When i updated, I had to install the stock recovery for the update to take affect. When I reverted back to stock recovery, the update flashed. I wiped my device, however, and thought that I'd be able to keep root and use Titanium. I was wrong, so here's how I fixed it:
Requirements (mostly just reminders not really telling you what to do here....)
1. S-OFF prior to updating
2. Stock Recovery to process the update
3. Disable Fastboot (Settings > Power > Fastboot)
Regain Root on 2.3.4 OTA Update
1. Download the HBoot CWM Recovery and SU flash able ZIP file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
2. Place the HBoot CWM Recovery file on the root of your sdcard (i.e.. sdcard/)
3. Power off device
4. Go into HBoot (Vol Down + Power)
5. Flash the CWM Recovery image
6. Reboot
7. Delete the CWM Recovery file off of your sd card
8. Power off
9. Reboot into Recovery (can be selected through HBoot if easier)
10. Choose the SU Root ZIP file that you downloaded in step 1 and flash it
11. Reboot, you're rooted with CWM Recovery again
This method work perfectly for me. I imagine anyone who did the OTA Update and has Rooted their phone would know they went to Stock recovery to apply the update or were always on it.
Thank you for the guide
Noobish question, how did you remove CWM and go back to stock recovery? Perhaps you should add this to the OP.
I was just gonna write this up. Oh well. THANX! I'd press your thanx button but I used them all up already. Maybe a beer?
EDIT: Can you please write up a how-to for going from whatever anyone is on to TMOUS Stock 1.45.531.1 + CWM + Root ? I believe it would be really helpful and I am just too lazy to do it myself
WARNING After installing the OTA, the bootloader now says in pink on the very top
******LOCKED*******
Also, Fastboot flash commands don't work (trying to flash splash image)
HBOOT is now: 1.18.0000
Re-running Revolutionary fixes it. and extended Fastboot commands work again.
And brings it back to 1.17.1111
if someone made a nandroid backup of the ota rooted thru cwm couldnt you just load that instead using the restore option?
As always gents.... Just a tiny tiny bit of patience will go a long way.
If your already rooted through Revolutionary, there is zero need to flash any official FOTA. Not sure why some people seem to want to try it out when they're already rooted? It's NO different than the Euro 2.3.4 OTA. Peeps all over these forums and the web are saying the same thing....no change.
Actually worse if you count the fact that heavy graphically intense games crash now as they do with all stock kernel 2.3.4 Euro ROMs.
Rooted versions of the Tmous 2.3.4 FOTA are already rolling out (birgertime I believe has one out). Give it a day and there will be more that are heavily customized like the ones from Baadz, Lee, Mike etc
It's easy to understand why people want to install the latest official firmware...but if you're rooted and or want to be....there is no need to ever go through official channels (HTC/Tmo) to get your updates.
Just for the people who might be unclear. To everyone else... carry on

Keep one thing in mind though... Your brother in-law & friend should realize that if they do ever one day want to root, they should stay far away from any official HTC updates. HTC will make them agree to an online waiver that will void many parts of their warranty if they choose to use HTC's online unlocker.
If they ever plan on rooting, they should go through Revolutionary....simply because it's the best of both worlds. You can have root, HTC/Tmo will never know.... and you can now get S-ON back after Revolutionary for warranty repairs and such
Quick question. I just got my sensation replaced with a new one(previous one had problems) and it came with 2.3.4 can I still get s-off and root?

[Q] I Unlocked Bootloader Using Official HTC Tool - Now What?

Ok so I unlocked with the Official HTC Bootloader unlock tool. I have been trying to find the answer to my question of what else needs to be done before I can Rom the thing. I have been reading and everyone just seems to be arguing whether or not you need S-OFF in order to put a rom on the phone.
So please... Someone give me a straight answer. What else Do i need to do before I can load a custom rom on the phone. I went through tall of the official unlock stuff and its unlocked. Now what?!?!
First you need CWM. Then just flash the zip of your ROM
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
Thanks man for the response. Thats what i thought needed to happen but wasnt sure. Off to rom I go!
Still having trouble
Well i went to the dev section and tried to follow the steps to installing CWM and I'm getting an error. Im thinking I might need to do the HBOOT steps too. Im going to try that next. I just dont want to break my 3 day old phone.... ya know.
You can't install CWM or any other ROM if you enabled s-off with the HTC dev tool. You can only do it if you use revolutionary.

With the Sensation this is no reason not to use revolutionary and get true S-OFF.
But if you want to continue down the HTC Unlocked path, you may want to visit the Evo 3G forum. There are some excellent threads and discussion on how to get into ClockworkMod using the HBOOT method. For some of the folks over in Evo 3G land, the latest HBOOT that was released for their HTC Unlock OTA has rendered Revolutionary useless because it disabled the root exploit, so they have no choice.
But if I were you, go with Revolutionary for permanent S-OFF/Nand unlock.

[Q] Root for apps, not new ROM

Hi folks,
I have read a number of guides and threads on the forum but I can't work out if any apply to what I want to do. I'm sure the info may be there but its not clear to me.
Basically I want root on my Desire S so that I can use aps like LUKS Manager, Orbot and so on. I don't want to install a new ROM as I'm happy with my what I have at the moment.
My hboot is 2.00.0002 and my Radio is 3822.10.08.04_M
Is what I want to do possible? If not and I have to install a new ROM is it possible to find one that matches what I have at the moment? How do I identitfy what that is?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

everything is possible. Just follow the guides in this forum how to root your device (I recommend not to use htcdev). You don't have to install a new ROM.
But my personal opinion is to use a custom ROM, since they often have much more possibilities for customizing and a lot modifications for speed and performance. Are you still using stock ROM with sense 3.0 ?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've only accepted the updates provded by my network so I guess thats the stock ROM?
Yep, its HTC Sense 3
I must be missing something basic because from all the guides i've read you have to install a new ROm to keep root?

Yes, it's stock right now.
At first you need to s-off your device (caution, you are about to void your warranty). You can do that using the revolutionary tool. Then you have to root, which can be done with superoneclick.
(edit: at this point you need to install a recovery like 4ext or cwm)
Root will not be undone when installing a
New ROM, neither do you need to install a new ROM. But I recommend to use a ROM with sense 3.5, it's much better.
You can find tutorials for everything I'm talking about right here in the forums.
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Ah, thats great, thanks. I didn't get that superoneclick could allow you to keep root.
Much appreciated.
I'll also look into the Sense 3.5. thanks again!
I forgot to mention: after rooting,
You need to install a custom recovery like 4ext or cwm. It's for backing up your system and flashing roms and updates and anything else you need
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Ok, so if I get s-off and then keep root by using superoneclick does that mean that I won't be able to receive updates through my network?

If your s-off and rooted the installer will not install the update (never tried cause I dont use stock rom) - but there are alway newest rooted stock roms here on xda and you can update your system manually. Most of the time before your carrier sends you the "official" update.
But yes, you have to do it by yourself.

But I think if you s-off and root and DO NOT install any other ROM you might still be able to download official updates for your stock ROM over the air

Yes, you can use OTA (Over The Air update) ... but I think after that, you will loose your root
look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401 FAQ's No. 5
ok, went to have a go at this but it looks like getting S-Off is quite complicated as well. I'm on HBOOT 2.00.0002.
Is there a shorter route to achieving root than:
downgrade
s-off
superoneclick (for root)
install custom recovery
If there isn't now is it likely to become available in the future or is the Desire S just difficult to do this with?
If You don't want to change rom, then stay s-on, unlock bootloader with htcdev and use superoneclick.

I get that the steps might be easy enough, but there are quite a lot of them and instructions can contain loops when put together (I.e. downgrading to get root may require root in some instructionals). I do appreciate your help and advice though. I may well switch ROMs, especially in the future (I can't see myself affording a new phone any time soon!)

ok i am late but i think i can help.
first of all stop confusing the damn guy with different kinds of stuff. even i was like him before rooting my precious desire s. he will learn the advantages and disadvantages of revolutionary s-off as time passes by.
for now follow this guide as i did this (and trust me i had the same intentions as you do)
first get your adb and fastboot setup, this is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
then go to htcdev and unlock your phone. follow the process, its easier than you think.
after your done, download superoneclick and root your phone. if you dont know much about superoneclick then search around or google it and you will find your anwsers. one more thing, htcdev will reset your phone.
sorry if i am late if you have already rooteed your phone.

[Q] 1st time HTC Sensation user, in what order do I start customizing?

Hi guys. I've just got my brand spanking new HTC Sensation and i'm wondering what order to root/SOFF in and basically anything else as i've not done DIY rooting since my old HTC Desire a couple of years back so i'm a bit rust and confused.
I don't want to mess up and brick my phone so i'd like to know the things to do in the correct order and with the correct software/tools.
1st off i'll give the details about my device:
Phone - HTC Sensation Z710e
HBOOT - 1.27.0000
Android version - 4.0.3
HTC Sense version - 3.6
Software number - 3.32.771.13
Kernel version - 3.0.16-g159c6f3 / [email protected] build- 144 #1 / SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 3 08:37:16CST 2012
I hope that's enough info but I have more should we need it.
This is how i'm thinking of doing it but please correct me if i'm wrong:
1) S-OFF using the Juopunutbear S-OFF method.
2) Install CWM via this thread.
3) Once that's been done I can go about installing custom ROM's.
Hope that's correct.
Thanks.
hmm as you are on stock ICS
there are few different ways to have root/custom roms
1.staying SON and flashing roms (this involves HTC-DEV unolcked bootloader ..which might void your warranty ...but not a single person was denied warranty until now afaik..but there is risk still involved..as htc keeps your phone info in their data base)
to do that follow this guide to the letter
2.SOFF and flash roms
2.1. SOFF without HTC-DEV unlocked bootloader ...guide link in my signature (ohh forgot to mention HTC-DEV will completely erase your data ..once you do a unlock)
(cons ....wire trick which is required is little bit hard..but all the troubleshoot has been covered)
2.2 SOFF with HTC-DEV unlocked bootloader....guide link here
(you can skip steps #2 and #3 as you are already stock ..igf you decided to use that)
for both the SOFF procedures ..there is a good tool too ..here is the tool (it not only does soff ..but a lot of other stuff...do check it )
after gaining SOFF ..you can flash recovery ..and then ROM installation
thanks for the reply.
So basically to do everything I should just use this?

For the wire trick it's a matter of timing don't give up.read over instructions again regarding the timing.I know you can do it is just going to take patience. You will be glad later you s off as there is more you can do and it makes things much easier later. Hang in there and I know you will have success . Best wishes.

you can use my one click root for that (soff guide link in my signature)
Damn i've just installed CWM, is there any difference between the two there than 1 having touch screen or do they have different functions? Don't really want to keep messing about if both are basically the same.
some rom installation works only on 4EXT (it will be mentioned in the thread ..like ARHD)...so its you call ..it has lot of other features too ..and completely supports backup made by cwm too
Alright, last few questions and i'll be gone!
Currently using the CM9 nightly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1654409
1) How do I go about installing 4EXT with CWM already installed?
2) I've just installed CM9. When I have the ROM on my desktop, can I go into the 'app' folder and remove some of the crap I won't be using? Things like Email, Movie Studio, Terminal Emulator, DPS Manager, ROM Manager, Voice Dialer, WiFi Calling? I used to do this on my old HTC Desire and it was a trail and error process but it did not damage/brick my phone in any way, all I used to get were screen with 'this application is not responding' etc. Is this still safe to do on the HTC Sensation?
3) In CM9 Nightly, how come I can't overclock past 1.2Ghz (stock speed)?
Thanks guys.
1: if you have root, just download the app from play store
2: yes, you can
3: you need to flash a kernel supporting overclock, like bricked AOSP.
If you run into problems, let me know

Alright, I lied about the 'final question'.
Basically i've uninstalled that 4EXT Easy Flash from here and it's replaced CWM. Works fine but i'm wondering if that's the newest version? Or could someone link me to the newest version please?
Download 4ext recovery updater free from the play store. It lets you update the recovery if u dont have newest version
Guys does anyone know the .apk name of 'Movie Studio'? Removing all the crap I won't use now and I can't find it in the app list folder.
Thanks.
I found VideoEditor.apk in system/app on CM9 RC 1
Got it, thank you very much!
Edit: I've also deleted 'Voice Dialer' and 'Update Me'. Hope that's O.K.

S-Off Pros/Cons

I am a new htc user, however not new to rooting and flashing. I have just recently considered rooting my One S but am not sure if I should just unlock the bootloader or wait for S-off. So my question is simply what are the cons of just unlocking the bootloader now and rooting or would it be better to wait for S-off and root then? Also, if I were to root now, what roms do you recommend?
S-OFF efforts are REALLY slow and it seems no serious attempts are going after it at the moment..
I'd imagine the only disadvantage of using HTC's current bootloader unlocking is that they know you did it and it could void some/all of your warranty. Of course, you also don't have full access to the ROM/HBOOT but you could still flash many things.. You also get a flagged device ("Tampered") if you flash anything which can only be removed with S-OFF AFAIK..
As for ROMs, there are plenty at the Dev section.. I tried a handful and most are good with varying degrees of stability. I am currently on TrickDroid since it is Sense based + extras.. Paranoid Android is my favorite CM-based and pretty stable overall.. AOKP is also good.. Haven't tried MIUI..
Really, it's up to you.. What do you prefer.. Just make sure you have a nandroid backup of your stock rom so you could revert back.

So, contrary to what I've also heard here in several threads, returning to stock with the proper RUU (or even nandroid, however that works?) doesn't truly revert the device back to stock in the way that you retain full warranty? That actually is quite the roadblock for me to get a Jelly Bean ROM soon. That is, if HTC doesn't provide an update soon enough, which we all know is probably the case.
I forgot about RUU but I don't claim that I know if it removes the tampered flag or not.
Some people say that if you relock your bootloader you are good but I don't have any personal experience with HTC service with this regard.

Even if you re lock the bootloader they can see it was tampered with. If you boot into the bootloader you'll see at the top it says tampered.
I wouldn't hold my breath for s- off. If you unlock and root your phone and then install TWRP you can just flash roms as though you do have s- off. TWRP will flash the boot.img. That way you don't need to hook your phone up to your pc and fastboot the boot.img. It's awesome Cuz you can just flash on the fly.

Okay wel thank you for the help. Will this affect any updates that are put out by HTC or if I unlock the bootloader is there something I can do to revert back? And it sounds like there a couple different ways to unlock and root, what is the best way to go about it? Gosh rooting and flashing roms on the vibrant was significantly more simple

I hear that you cannot OTA update stock ROMs after flashing a custom recovery unless you re-install stock recovery and relock your device.. It's a long process.. of course the important part to update is the radio and you could do it without going through all of that but you risk a permanent brick if something goes wrong..
As for the easiest way for rooting, check the all-in-one thread in dev forum.. I unlocked, rooted, and flashed recovery of mine using that application.. pretty noob friendly
