Im coming from the vibrant 3g and came lurking thru these dev forums to see what my phones big brother has to offer....
Damn how depressing lol.
Well anyways, i couldnt figure out which roms were what and what they had to offer etc sooo
Im just curious what diff roms you guys have
Gb, froyo, maybe ics?
Focus is on stability
So what roms are your most stable and what are ttheir biggest downsides..
Approx how is your performance and maybe benchmark scores?
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
I'm only familiar with 3 rom's and am happy with all 3.
Like you I came here from the vibrant about a year ago due to I broke mine.....yea there's not much here but there is a little
The 3 rom's I've used are whitehawxs Valhalla final(if you recall whitehawxs came from the vibrant) but I made a lot of changes to his due to several things like the pink unicorn.
Valhalla black by Raver, nice rom I'm using it now.
And last but not least ravers miui rom.....I really love miui but on this phone they haven't yet been able to get ringtones and vibration working due to lack of files needed being released
Sent from my SGH-T959V,SGH-T959 using xda premium.
We have a CM7 WIP.
GPS and BT don't work yet, but it is constantly being worked on by our team acid. (Mainly Bhundven and M4xm4n).
Also, the battery life isn't all the way up, but I am using it.
It's is lightning fast, and not fast like people say about valhalla. This is AOSP fast!
@Shortbus-Driver, it's Whitehawkx(spelling) LOL
LOL yea its all good....just didn't feel like going back and correcting everything its bad enough I had to go back and correct Tom to rom like 4-5 times LOL I had just flashed vb and you know how that is with the keyboard settings

I'm using Valhalla Black by Raverx3x http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404863
With AntonX's kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610528
Very good stability and battery life. Prior to this, the best kernel was Bryan's 0.2d, which AntonX started from, so it is very clean.

Benchmarks are for braggarts. I'll just say that this combination does great BlueTooth, GPS and plays all the games I use (Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds *, Where's My Water) perfectly.
We're VERY close to having a working CM7, but until BT and GPS work, I can't go there... so no comments.

@ younix258: Welcome to the forums. It's good to see you doing your homework. This is my first android phone. Coming from a worn out original Palm Pre, there's just no going back for me.
@ IDisposable: Although I'm new to these forums, I have noticed a bit of bickering back and forth between a few select members. Unfortunately, it appears that we've lost the developers that are the very ones that make / made this entire modding of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G phone possible in the first place. In my opinion, those developers deserve the utmost respect and support from all of us that are benefiting from their hard work. 'Nuff said.
That's exactly the setup I'm running, too. I just finished getting my phone where I want it after loading everything up yesterday. It's running smooth & I'm happy with the results, so far.
The only thing I use benchmarks for is to compare changes I've made to my phone. If i install a tweak or make a change here or there, I do like to see the numbers go up. That way, I can avoid piling a bunch of stuff on my phone that I either don't need, or actually affects my phone in unintended negative ways that I might not possibly understand.
I'm also patiently watching & waiting for development on CM7. It's a good thing that I read the notes on that thread, so I knew beforehand that it's not quite "ready for primetime". Otherwise, I would've been disappointed.
Overall, I feel that the Samsung Galaxy S 4g is a very nice phone. Although it doesn't have the killer specs of the Galaxy SII, it still has a lot of potential and when combined with all of the custom ROMs and tweaks that are available on these XDA forums-- this phone is very far from "dead", in my opinion.
Keep up the good work boys-- keep up the good work!!!
Good answers guy, thanks for being thorough.. yeah what bothered me about this forum is the lack of precise rom info in the rom threads and titles are damn near useless.
But you guys cleared it up.
As a side note, the 959v will be going to my little brother and I'm keeping my 959 lol so while ill be around, ill stick mostly to my OG vibe.
Oh and when cm7 works, that **** will turn heads lol.. just hope battery gets straightened out

Getting mine in a couple of days.
Seem kind of weary. Is it because the G2x is new OR is it just not that popular?
Don't see much dev support on this device.
Anyone shed some light?
actually there are many top devs that have been starting to develop for this phone. Some are top Vibrant devs like morfic (kernels/ Team Whiskey i believe?), krylon (team whiskey as well/Bionix Roms), MT4G faux, cyanogen (CM7 Roms), and more devs are popping up. Google made this phone pretty easy to work with from what I understand.
these are just the big devs that i can think of off the top of my head.
Also we had one click root and Clockwork Recovery within 24 hours after G2x release. Source code was released within a few days after G2x release from LG as well instead of the normal 90 days.
now all we need is the Official Gingerbread from T-mobile to get us rocking even more
yeah g2x development got rocking pretty fast. very well orgainiazed in here as well.

the biggest hump we need to get over is our first big patch from LG/tmobile which will give us gingerbread (2.3.4 hopefully) and a new baseband with much better driver support...
all of the 2.3 builds are hampered a bit right now because of kernel issues or wonky drivers for the battery, bluetooth, light sensor, keyboard/touch sensor (spacebar deadzone), govenors for the kernel, ect... drivers are not easy for devs to build and optimize, thats more of a manufacturer job
for complete stability right now the Eagles Blood rom is hands down the best in my opinion but again its only 2.2...
I would really expect the update fairly soon, within weeks I am hoping and after that id imagine things will start to explode... faux is already taking great strides in a pure AOSP rom which will be a great base for future rom cookers to build off of
Tbh, I think development for this phone is great. I mean we have morfic and faux making kernals. We have CM. We have Krylon with Bionix and we also have Team Shockwave with EB. Development for this phone can only grow much bigger.
I think you have to be one of us ex-Vibrant users to really appriciate G2x development in its current state.
The support is incredible for this phone. I really can't see how it could be any better or more prolific, it's only been out for a month.
What are you talking about dude? This phone has been out for a month and it already has some of the most popular names in development. You are out of your damn mind.
I'll take quality over quantity any day. The people who are currently developing for the G2x are top notch. I've been very pleased with the progress of things

You think the vibrant was bad? Take a look at the at the epic's forum. They still only have like 4 stable roms.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Yea I think this thread is misleading. For a 3 month old phone there is TONS of dev work going on.
They are just getting the AOSP roms ironed out, which means smaller devs will have a good base to customize roms their way. We already have several Kang Developers as well as Faux, EB, Bionix and CM7. This is excluding the handful of custom kernels.
For 3 weeks I think we're doing hella good. I'm happy
Wasn't aware it has only been out a month. Not bad indeed!
Off thread topic, but is everyone just living with the LCD light bleed?
I'm not sure if sending it in for refurbs will really fix the underlying issue.
Does it really just become a game of "hope for the best one"?

I just got this phone 3 days ago, and its my first with Tmo service. In comparison to ATT phones, except Cappy, Im super impressed by the attention from major devs. I have been waiting for this phone to release for awhile. Was advertised as quad band prelease, then found out release day that its not, so actually had to open tmo acct.
This is the first phone in a year that has made me leave my Cappy at home.

Ok, normally its a no brainer as im used to CM7 on the G2, but i have been reading there is a lot of bugs with it (i have not read since nightly release 17 or so and i think its up to 30 or something around that now so i gotta catch up a bit i just got the phone today). I also read that eaglesbread or something like that is mentioned all over the place. normally i would not ask this question, but with this phone there is a lot of issues and want to clarify everything.
im an avid CM7 user, so trying other roms makes me nervous, so overall what has been the best ROM where everything works (gps, wifi, 4g, reboots, etc etc etc)
I would also like a rom with an overclockable kernel built in, as im kinda nervous about flashing kernels, but please feel free to share combos of roms and kernels that work outstanding as well. again, im used to a G2, so over there i dont ask this question, as i started and will continue to use CM7 on my G2.
my G2x is already rooted.
You are going to get alot of opinions cause at this point in time no rom is that much better then any other
Now wait for a while longer and I am sure it would be an easier answer

lol, sadly in the back of my mind, thats what i was thinking.
usually before i buy a phone, first thing i look for is how easy it is to root, then i look at hardware, then roms and stability. as you can tell, i have been trolling the G2x forums for almost 2 weeks now looking around and have not seen anything that is straight forward like on the G2, but i also got the G2 in feb 2011, so it was already out for a while prior to my purchase compared to this phone has been out for what 3-4 weeks now?
my initial plan was to stick with stock rom, just root it and change the font and remove some bloatware and wait for the official GB update and install it manually from one of our great developers on this site
my device has very very minor screen bleed at each of the 4 corners and even that was hard to find, screen build quality seems good and all day under moderate use has not locked up on me. i will have to figure out why wifi was having an issue with me, but my G2 was also have wifi lockups that it never had before so it may be an issue on my end. but 4G connectivity has been working 100%.

If you're a Cm fan, now's the time to jump on board. #34 is fairly stable. I use it as my day to day. The battery readings are still f'd up something major. Bionix is a really nice rom. Smooth and clean, and really no major bugs that I noticed. I rocked that for about 7 days, in between #26 and #33 CM. The battery goes fast with Bionix however...if the reading is, in fact, correct.

Nonsense!
I've been using Eagles Blood 1.04 Froyo for about a week now and its been great. I chose this one because it looks stock and I like that (black status bar is a nice mod too). Everything has worked fine: wifi, calls, GPS, 4G, good battery life, etc. I tried a couple Gingerbread variants but I had too many issues -- freezes, major keyboard lag, GPS not locking on. Haven't tried CM yet, although I loved it on my Nexus One.

There are some freezes with any of the roms when you use the kernels but what do you expect when you overclock to 1.5? From my experience the most stable set up for me is running stock froyo or EB froyo, but I always change my mind and go to GB and CM7 so go figure. Mind you the freezes for me are about 3 times a day and are annoying but the trade off IMHO is worth it

You should be much more concerned about overclocking your device than flashing a kernel. You really don't have much to fear, just dont get careless.
CM is a crowd favorite but its not for me so I dont think you would benefit from my opinion on the available roms.
I just encourage you to take a deep breath and start flashing rom to rom. You just might find that you like something else a lot more.
Faux asop is pretty solid for me. His latest with kernel is doing well so far. I haven't had the random loss in audio lately. If the battery is wrong I don't care because I am ocd and it helps me not worry!

Same here. I liked cyanogen mod up through 4.1.11.1 on my G1 but ever since then there have been roms that are both faster and more stable. Props to cyanogen for influencing the movement though. Not knocking him, just not my style anymore... going to try faux's aosp I think.

Anyone have an update on their favorites? Seems like we've had an explosion of new ROMs lately.
Hey devs, might you want to consolidate your efforts a bit?
Hey guys,
I have a full upgrade coming on Tuesday (7-5) and have been doing a lot of research on what phone I want. I have it narrowed to the SK4g and waiting a little longer for the mt4g slide.
My burning question is does anyone know the status of porting CyanogenMod to the Sidekick?
If there were any progress on that, it would make it a no brainer since the combo of the physical keyboard, basic internal hardware stats, and the right price + CM7 would make it a near perfect for me phone.
I have asked on the CM forums, and googled it but cannot find an answer. I know bburke has mentioned it so I figured to ask here and see.
Thanks in Advance!

Well to answer your question wolfepakt, Its a work in progress. Its been less than a month since we were gifted CWM(amazing work Krylon360!), and the "Smooth Maximus" rom serious (Major thanks to AyoTeddy!). With what little knowledge i know of about CM7, I believe there needs to be a gingerbread leak for our device or a device closely related (epic 4g i think is the closest). But what we really need is a couple more devs to work on it. Ayoteddy (smooth maximus), Dr.Honk(Bali Kernal's) and Krylon360 (CWM) can only do so much on their own. If you know of some devs that would help us port it, our phone could see the gingery goodness!
Did some more looking on CM wiki and found one small tidbit at the very bottom of this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_FAQ
There is no maintainer but the sk is not to far from the galaxy S line.

Its close as far as hardware is concerned, but I'd like to ask you to look at the clock work mod thread so you can see the real differences.
Will do. Have been reading a lot in the last week or two!
There are tons of useful pages, some of which should be stickies but aren't. If you need anything just ask brother.
p.s. If you look at the phones i have posted in my signature, My current setup blows them all away. Ayoteddy and Dr.Honk did a magnificent piece of work with the smooth maximus rom.

There are two things making me want to go SK:
1. The price is reasonable,
2, The keyboard is bigger (5 row, looks more 'bigger hand" friendly)
4g slide has the dual core processor, more ram, etc.
I really don't care about the camera!
Either one will get a 16 gig sd card, so that doesn't really matter to me.
(I wanted a g2, but tmo sent it to a premature grave!)
All that being said I will most likely go with the SK, but I am gonna wait till the slide comes out and call Tmo Loyalty and see what they can do for me!
i have a G2 and the SK4G, and at first, when we had only stock for the SK4G, i preferred my G2, as the development for the device is truly amazing. but now, with the Smooth Maximus ROM and Bali kernel, I've been using my Sidekick. CM7 or AOSP would be amazing, but to me, we have it good already! i think Samsung knocked it out of the park with the physical design, and yeah, the keyboard is awesome, best i have ever used on a smartphone. i think i could use this phone for a long time myself.

Great info yogi!
Doing more research tells me that the diffs between froyo and gingerbread are nice but a lot of it is similar in the bali kernel on smX. I still am leaning to SK and getting more convinced each day. I wish I had the time to devote to learning the info to build kernels so I could help DEV and work on OC kernels etc. I have used Linux for years, but between working 40+ a week and a family that we Homeschool, time for stuff like that is on the low side!
I never got into having the top of the line tech as it outdated to quickly to justify the price! However as a geek by nature, I frequently drool over TOTL!
I have downloaded the kernel source from samsung and will dig into it tonight at work! (Love OT!!!) I hope that it is well commented!

I'm slowly working on porting CM7/AOSP 2.3, just getting around to some more work on it, but currently have to completely rebuild, as GB requires a different init.rc haha. I've built both the bali kernel and the stock kernel, so if you have some questions yogi, I can possiblly help you out, just pm me or find me, you know where I hang out.
hey sduvick have you made any progress?
I'd drop a <Donate Monetarily> to this cause, as I have for WiFi-Tether, Bugless beast, and Cyanogen in the past...
The default double lock screen is a major hindrance for daily use with stock and the only viable alternative right now.
I recently upgraded from Vibrant to SGS4G and I'm very satisfied overall (I hate that changing Rom's isn't as simple a process as it was on the Vibrant). Even though I know the hardware is nearly the same, my experience on the SGS4G has been much smoother: less lag, snappier performance, better battery life... even a higher Quadrant score (1600+ vs 1200+).
I haven't sold my Vibrant yet, so I thought I'd try ICS--man, what a mistake! It's so slick that it hurts to go back to my now seemingly-clunky SGS4G. I'd have been better off not knowing what I was missing.
So why does it seem like there is no work being done on an ICS port for the SGS4G? Is it because the phone is less popular than the Vibrant (less handsets out in the wild)? Or has everyone just moved on? And if the Vibrant and SGS4G are so similar, why can't the Vibrant port be modded somehow for the SGS4G? I'd do it myself if I had the time and the know-how...
In any case, would putting some cash up spur some developers to get a working ICS rom for the SGS4G? I know I'd be willing to kick in $20 and I'm sure there are plenty of other people on the forums who would do the same.
ICS will be available once the search feature gets fixed. Seems a lot of sgs4g users are having issues with using it.

I think it was a subtle attempt at humor, in reference to the search feature for XDA forums. Meaning that the topic has already been brought up. You know, the typical sarcastic response that has nothing to do with the post.

If you hold back and only give people what they need, they only ***** and moan about what they want and ignore the fact that what they have is broken to all hell
<3 OEM/ISP's and their inability to give serious time to updates
Most of the time the reason we don't have an update ( Like ICS ) is because we're waiting for the underlying sourcecode from the OEM for that version of Android. IE: why did we have to wait so long before we got GB ?

For you guys that have tried all of the ICS ROM's, which one do you recommend?
It is hard to determine from the threads as they don't list what is working/not working. The ones i can see available right now are:
1) AOKP
2) Genesis
3) Owain
4) Hellfire
5) Eaglesblood AOSP
Thanks, Chris

Just search the threads for the word working. Or look at the other threads like this, there's a ton of e'm

Use them all then decide which one YOU like best.
This is exactly what i want to avoid. Reading through thousands of posts or flashing and using several different roms. I am looking for input from people who have already done this.

I usually don't respond to topics like this, and i'm sorry if this sounds mean, but that just sounds lazy.
i like EB ICS AOSP combined with the apex launcher, i just flashed hellfire last night and my screen doesnt come on sometimes, and i would have to take out the batt and reboot the phone.

I dont mean to bash or anything, but there are many threads very similiar to this one, and you cant really base yourself on other people's input because every phone
is different. Most of the time someones ROM+Kernel combo might be very terrible on your phone while some might even work fime. Regardless of whether you want to do it or not, the best way to find out what the 'best' ROM is would be to flash and use every ROM you think is interesting and in the end decide which one worked best on your phone and then go on and try different Kernels to see if there is any improvement.
Again i dont meant to flame.
Good luck!

Reinventing the wheel is stupid. Is it lazy to look up that gravitational acceleration on Earth is 9.8m/s squared, or should I start dropping rocks off a high building to figure it out myself? It is lazy to look up Amazon reviews on a product, or should I order each and every one myself and then decide the merits independently?
There are like 20 damn ICS ROMs for the P999, all of which are probably 95% the same except for stupid stuff like theme/colors. It's confusing as hell.
Which ones are good? Which ones are lame? In what way? I want to know as well.

Each phone is unique, like people. Same parts, different ways of working, different ways of responding to different mods. What's lame to one person may not be lame to the next guy. What runs well for you may not run well for him. The ONLY way to find out what works best for you and your phone is to experiment with all of them, try them out for about a week each and stay on whatever you like best. That is what we all do. There was no magic guru or button that told us what was best. I've seen hundreds of these kinds of posts, and it asks the same question and gets the same replies. And last I looked, there wasn't 20 ICS roms in the p999 section, GB maybe but not ICS. There are about 7, Owain's, HFS, 2 Eaglesbloods, AOKP, Arcee's SelfKang and Genesis. Try them all, rate them and you decide for yourself what's best for you .

Lol your metaphor mages perfect sense, no need to re-invent the wheel. Try searching. Turns out, most of those threads do actually say what does and does not work in them. If you search the threads for the word "working" look at the last 10 posts to get a good idea.

Its basically high school or college all over again, you got the cheaters and lazies that just ask something simple and wait for the answer, instead of doing some research and learning things them selves... just like teachers used to do, they'd just ignore, or say figure it out on your own.

So far I've tried HFS 1.4 and 1.6, EB, and I'm currently on AOKP build 32. I'm going to try Genesis this weekend when the next build is released. They all more or less run the same. EB is pretty bare with less options and it may just be my mind, but it feels like it runs the smoothest, but it's lacking some features that the other ROMs have that I wish it icluded. The difference between HFS and AOKP are mostly cosmetic and how you can customize them. It does seems like AOKP has more data connection dropping issues than both HFS and EB, though. I know it's a known problem with ICS ROMs, but I didn't really notice before when using either HFS or EB, but with AOKP I've noticed it frequently or maybe I've just been playing on my phone more.
If I had to choose? I honestly don't know. If it wasn't for the more apparent data drops, I'd probably just stay on AOKP. HFS added some cosmetic changes I really didn't like (the red star when answering calls), but I'm looking forward to the next build. If I wasn't hopping back and forth between different ROMs, though, I'd probably just stay on EB.
Thanks for the response. I am on EB AOSP right now and it works fairly well. The only feature i am really missing is the call mute, and of course HW Encoder/decoder which is missing from all ICS roms.
Chris
I definitely sympathize with the question even if I also agree that which rom is the best is very subjective. I started trying out all the ICS roms a few weeks ago and thought I'd have a clear favorite in the end but I was wrong.
Stability wise all the ICS roms are very similar. They all have an unfortunate issue of having trouble switching over to data from wifi, for which airplane toggle off and on usually fixes it for me - this sounds like a base ICS 4.0.4 issue. For me they also periodically slow down and even crash and the overall performance is quite a bit worse than GB, but the features make it so that I can't go back to GB and it is stable and fast enough. I also noticed some random incompatibilities with apps, like I can't press the install button in the Amazon App Store (anyone know if there is a fix for that?)
Like the above commenter, Eaglesblood AOSP seemed the most stable to me and I will be checking it out again when they have a new release. That said I am currently using Genesis (+ Harsh Kernel), which is based on AOKP, and it is very nice. For me, personally, right now, it's between Eaglesblood AOSP (when the new ver hits) and Genesis though all of the roms have their bonuses and I change my mind pretty often. HFS has great visual flair and was pretty stable for me, owain does a bunch of tweaks / fixes to the base CM9, AOKP has a ton of configuration settings.
TL;DR: ICS is definitely still beta but you can't go wrong with any of the ICS roms.

There are 5 ICS ROMs. If you can't take the time to try out 5 ROMs, but expect other people to do it for you, you should just stick with the ****ty stock firmware.

Ironically you proved his point. You just advocated doing some research to find the answer where it is already documented. (You said look it up.. not post a question and hope someone tells you.)
But to answer your question none of the G2x ICS ROMs are all there at this point. You will likely find something you don't like or doesn't work as well as it should with all of them. It's just where we are in the cycle and there are no stock ROMs to work with to solve some of the things like hardware acceleration.

Flashing roms and experimenting with each one is suppose to be FUN! I always enjoy flashing different roms and trying them out.
The devs provide these roms free of charge and now you're too lazy to even use them to your advantage? Wow.
And I can understand if you're looking for reviews while you are buying something, but this is free. And plus when people post their favorite roms, its kind of an insult to the other devs because roms shouldn't even be compared and I doubt the devs want their roms to be compared.
Just try them all and judge for yourself which one is right for you.

It doesn't hurt to give a small review of the rom, though, if someone just wants your opinion. Eventually, he'll probably get around to trying them , but maybe he just wants a place to start for now. At the very least, be a bit less eilitist when you're saying for him to try the roms for himself.
