G2x Lack of Support? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Getting mine in a couple of days.
Seem kind of weary. Is it because the G2x is new OR is it just not that popular?
Don't see much dev support on this device.
Anyone shed some light?

actually there are many top devs that have been starting to develop for this phone. Some are top Vibrant devs like morfic (kernels/ Team Whiskey i believe?), krylon (team whiskey as well/Bionix Roms), MT4G faux, cyanogen (CM7 Roms), and more devs are popping up. Google made this phone pretty easy to work with from what I understand.
these are just the big devs that i can think of off the top of my head.
Also we had one click root and Clockwork Recovery within 24 hours after G2x release. Source code was released within a few days after G2x release from LG as well instead of the normal 90 days.
now all we need is the Official Gingerbread from T-mobile to get us rocking even more

yeah g2x development got rocking pretty fast. very well orgainiazed in here as well.

Development doesn't come in full force overnight...

the biggest hump we need to get over is our first big patch from LG/tmobile which will give us gingerbread (2.3.4 hopefully) and a new baseband with much better driver support...
all of the 2.3 builds are hampered a bit right now because of kernel issues or wonky drivers for the battery, bluetooth, light sensor, keyboard/touch sensor (spacebar deadzone), govenors for the kernel, ect... drivers are not easy for devs to build and optimize, thats more of a manufacturer job
for complete stability right now the Eagles Blood rom is hands down the best in my opinion but again its only 2.2...
I would really expect the update fairly soon, within weeks I am hoping and after that id imagine things will start to explode... faux is already taking great strides in a pure AOSP rom which will be a great base for future rom cookers to build off of

Tbh, I think development for this phone is great. I mean we have morfic and faux making kernals. We have CM. We have Krylon with Bionix and we also have Team Shockwave with EB. Development for this phone can only grow much bigger.

I think you have to be one of us ex-Vibrant users to really appriciate G2x development in its current state.

The support is incredible for this phone. I really can't see how it could be any better or more prolific, it's only been out for a month.

What are you talking about dude? This phone has been out for a month and it already has some of the most popular names in development. You are out of your damn mind.

I'll take quality over quantity any day. The people who are currently developing for the G2x are top notch. I've been very pleased with the progress of things

You think the vibrant was bad? Take a look at the at the epic's forum. They still only have like 4 stable roms.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

Yea I think this thread is misleading. For a 3 month old phone there is TONS of dev work going on.
They are just getting the AOSP roms ironed out, which means smaller devs will have a good base to customize roms their way. We already have several Kang Developers as well as Faux, EB, Bionix and CM7. This is excluding the handful of custom kernels.
For 3 weeks I think we're doing hella good. I'm happy

Wasn't aware it has only been out a month. Not bad indeed!
Off thread topic, but is everyone just living with the LCD light bleed?
I'm not sure if sending it in for refurbs will really fix the underlying issue.
Does it really just become a game of "hope for the best one"?

did you get yours yet? i just got mine, 24 hours now, i have a little bit of bleed. kind of annoying at first, but its not nearly as bad as others so i'm letting it go. everything else about the phone is great. i have cm7 on it and its been really solid so far. each hour goes by i like the phone more.

Juat got mine about 7 hours ago. Running bionix 2. Miss the CM features....mine isn't too bad with the bleed...but just wondering what others felt about the issue...

At this point I feel like those who couldnt live with it are gone and everyone whos still in this forum isnt bothered . I still only ever thing of the bleeding when I hope on XDA and someone brings it up.

I just got this phone 3 days ago, and its my first with Tmo service. In comparison to ATT phones, except Cappy, Im super impressed by the attention from major devs. I have been waiting for this phone to release for awhile. Was advertised as quad band prelease, then found out release day that its not, so actually had to open tmo acct.
This is the first phone in a year that has made me leave my Cappy at home.

What is the attraction to CM7?

These forums are getting littered with people asking for help after screwing up their phones trying to install CM7. Why are people who don't know what they're doing trying to install a ROM that is not yet fully functional? This should be left to devs who are trying to fix issues, not people who need their phones to work. I just don't get it.
I thought the topic was taken down.
Edit: Nevermind, the topic is still there. Imo though, I think it should be taken down and only progress be shown. Might prevent the massive amounts of bricking and general failure to read directions.

Yeah, but too many of those people are ending up in here looking for help when it goes bad. It just takes up space and energy better used to solve issues with actual working ROMs. Let the Devs do the development work that they're so good at.
Probably because CM is a big name dev and people think it'll be superior to what they're currently using, oh, and like it was said earlier, Gingerbread... I don't see what the huge fuss is about with Gingerbread, nothing huge has changed from Froyo and Ice Cream is already in development so I think Gingerbread will turn out to be like the early 2.0 Eclair build, something to skip over until a big update is available.
CM isn't what it used to be back in its hayday with the G1/Dream and MT3G/Magic, so I'm not sure what people are expecting... Nothing against the CM team of course, the entire team does great work even if the releases are taking a really long time compared to before.
I'll be waiting it out, if I get an official Gingerbread update for either of my phones, I'll do them, otherwise I'm going to wait for the next big update which is actually worth installing... But I agree, there seems to be a huge deal about a simple update for no apparent reason at all, Its not like the Eclair > Froyo update which improved performance by a good margin, so really, there isn't much to gain by installing Gingerbread other than a few UI improvements (which most of us won't see anyways since we all use 3rd party launchers).
Here's a perfect example of how dangerous this place can be sometimes.

I haven't flashed it because I don't know what I'm doing, scared and too lazy to start messing with odin or the like, but I understand the urge. By all accounts it's stable enough. I'll probably give it a go within a few days. At which point, if I brick my phone, I'll get a new one and consider it a learning experience. Plus, based on what I read yesterday it's never going to be as simple as updating a .zip anyway, so I might as well cross that bridge sooner rather than later.

And yes, I'm not one bit ashamed of lusting for the obvious the gimmick. Gingerbread CRT out animation alone would be worth the risk, tbh, much less the whole gingerbread rom.
If people refuse to heed warnings, its their own fault.
As for Gingerbread, I can't speak for the others, but I want SIP support.
JVM improvements
Gingerbread claimed to have faster garbage collection and OpenGL among other things. It will probably have bigger memory footprint on a downside.
I will wait til Audience noise suppression support is there, which is likely never.
I will probably try it when Voodoo Sound and OC/UV are in the kernel, and all major bugs fixed. This likely to happen with the help of Galaxy S community.
I don't get the attitude towards being more AOSPish. AOSP is already out there. It is Samsung Captivate which needs native driver support to have all its internals fully functional.
I keep Torch 1.5 as a workhorse for now.

There is no aosp for the captivate. Cm is built from actual source compared to piece together roms...which have been good by the way. And why create a thread about cm7 and peoples motives for flashing? Its new...that's why I flashed it! I have never used cm before so I personally wanted to see what it was like. It is the best rom I have used for speed without any lagfix. People have started flashing phones since I have been a member with no experience...it is going to stay that way. It hasn't just started with cm.

True, but while every ROM has its share of issues, I see more posts from people who tried to flash CM7 and had it go horribly wrong than any other. It is a completely different animal as far as flashing goes.

Anyone else notice slow development?

The development seems like it is almost at a stand still. I was expecting to have at least MIUI by now. The 2X seems to be doing a lot better w/ dev. And the ROMs that are out seem like they have already been abandoned. I was really looking forward to Ultimate as well.
Anyone else noticing this?
I read somewhere that jumanface is working on MIUI. Also, we have nightlies for cm and two froyo mods and two kernel devs. These guys have lives as well and without gingerbread source and froyo being olds news these days, it is what it is.
I have seen quite a bit of development considering that a lot of their work may have to be completely redone when the official GB update drops. It stalled with the rumors of its impending release. They were poised to pick up the update and get their ROMs out as quickly as possible. With it not dropping and no real date you are seeing things pick up a bit again independent of what LG/TMO does or doesn't do.
I see Faux and Krylon360 in their threads all the time. Makes me wonder were they get the time to reply AND develop. There are several other developers getting donations or asking for a deal on a phone in the general section. We should see those people jump into the fray soon as well. CM just made an announcement and is obviously working on the G2X. There are just some larger hurdles than on some other devices at the moment.
Yep, development slowed, I believe, due to the Announced Gingerbread drop. The drop will bring (hopefully) a new kernel (though the devs have that pretty much covered) and more importantly better drivers.
That said, the CM team isn't slowing down to wait for the drop and it looks like they solved the one big remaining issue....the wonky battery meter.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128841
And has been said several other developers are eager to jump in once they have a development device....notably BirgerTime & Whitehawkx of vibrant fame. We could all help development immensely by donating our Monday morning coffee money...
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127338
And remember porting from the 2x (g2x's sister device) should be fairly straight forward after we get rolling (probably after GB).
So, while I understand your concern, I really don't think there is anything to worry about development wise.
Yeah you make a good point. GB ROMs I am not too worried about. I am staying away from the nightlies because they tend to be unstable. I was looking forward to Team Whiskey, but theirs had the same problem CM7 has and it hasn't been updated for many weeks. So I am currently using Ultimate. I just miss my MIUI I had on my Vibrant.

Ah but when we get MIUI it will be GB based...more specifically MIUI is AOSP based and Faux's ASOP is coming along nicely...you can't make an omelet until you have the egg.
That said, work has begun on a MIUI port....Link: http://forums.miuiandroid.com/forumdisplay.php?52-LG-Optimus-2X-G2X

Really, dude? The guy can't want a Sense ROM and love the g2x hardware? Not picking a fight, but you throw a lot of acid (I'm guilty of that myself on occasion).
(to the guy that asked about Sense...it's not likely unless HTC releases a phone with very similar hardware to the g2x)
And some releases have slowed....partially BECAUSE developers, like Krylon, work on more than one device at a time (and that's a GOOD thing). The pending release of GB has also, in my estimation, played a part. But mostly it's the nature of the beast. Even when development is ongoing (as I'm sure it is) releases come in bursts. There may be a pause where it appears no development is happening. While behind the scenes the dev is working on something big (and more time consuming). And let's not forget the devs have lives...coding us a better Android (for free) may not be at the top of their to do list on a given week.
Anyway, while I also perceive a slight lull in the action...I see NO problem with our development situation. I'm actually VERY excited about it considering the talent we have involved.

[Q]CM7 for SK4g

Hey guys,
I have a full upgrade coming on Tuesday (7-5) and have been doing a lot of research on what phone I want. I have it narrowed to the SK4g and waiting a little longer for the mt4g slide.
My burning question is does anyone know the status of porting CyanogenMod to the Sidekick?
If there were any progress on that, it would make it a no brainer since the combo of the physical keyboard, basic internal hardware stats, and the right price + CM7 would make it a near perfect for me phone.
I have asked on the CM forums, and googled it but cannot find an answer. I know bburke has mentioned it so I figured to ask here and see.
Thanks in Advance!
WolfePakT
Well to answer your question wolfepakt, Its a work in progress. Its been less than a month since we were gifted CWM(amazing work Krylon360!), and the "Smooth Maximus" rom serious (Major thanks to AyoTeddy!). With what little knowledge i know of about CM7, I believe there needs to be a gingerbread leak for our device or a device closely related (epic 4g i think is the closest). But what we really need is a couple more devs to work on it. Ayoteddy (smooth maximus), Dr.Honk(Bali Kernal's) and Krylon360 (CWM) can only do so much on their own. If you know of some devs that would help us port it, our phone could see the gingery goodness!
Did some more looking on CM wiki and found one small tidbit at the very bottom of this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_FAQ
There is no maintainer but the sk is not to far from the galaxy S line.

Its close as far as hardware is concerned, but I'd like to ask you to look at the clock work mod thread so you can see the real differences.
Will do. Have been reading a lot in the last week or two!
There are tons of useful pages, some of which should be stickies but aren't. If you need anything just ask brother.
p.s. If you look at the phones i have posted in my signature, My current setup blows them all away. Ayoteddy and Dr.Honk did a magnificent piece of work with the smooth maximus rom.
Good deal!
I don't change my phone every three months like some people, so I want something that I will be happy with for a long time.
I had my Dash for almost two years, have had the highlight for over a year.
Have has good luck with both Samsung and HTC!

There are two things making me want to go SK:
1. The price is reasonable,
2, The keyboard is bigger (5 row, looks more 'bigger hand" friendly)
4g slide has the dual core processor, more ram, etc.
I really don't care about the camera!
Either one will get a 16 gig sd card, so that doesn't really matter to me.
(I wanted a g2, but tmo sent it to a premature grave!)
All that being said I will most likely go with the SK, but I am gonna wait till the slide comes out and call Tmo Loyalty and see what they can do for me!
i have a G2 and the SK4G, and at first, when we had only stock for the SK4G, i preferred my G2, as the development for the device is truly amazing. but now, with the Smooth Maximus ROM and Bali kernel, I've been using my Sidekick. CM7 or AOSP would be amazing, but to me, we have it good already! i think Samsung knocked it out of the park with the physical design, and yeah, the keyboard is awesome, best i have ever used on a smartphone. i think i could use this phone for a long time myself.

Great info yogi!
Doing more research tells me that the diffs between froyo and gingerbread are nice but a lot of it is similar in the bali kernel on smX. I still am leaning to SK and getting more convinced each day. I wish I had the time to devote to learning the info to build kernels so I could help DEV and work on OC kernels etc. I have used Linux for years, but between working 40+ a week and a family that we Homeschool, time for stuff like that is on the low side!
I never got into having the top of the line tech as it outdated to quickly to justify the price! However as a geek by nature, I frequently drool over TOTL!
I have downloaded the kernel source from samsung and will dig into it tonight at work! (Love OT!!!) I hope that it is well commented!

I'm slowly working on porting CM7/AOSP 2.3, just getting around to some more work on it, but currently have to completely rebuild, as GB requires a different init.rc haha. I've built both the bali kernel and the stock kernel, so if you have some questions yogi, I can possiblly help you out, just pm me or find me, you know where I hang out.
hey sduvick have you made any progress?
I'd drop a <Donate Monetarily> to this cause, as I have for WiFi-Tether, Bugless beast, and Cyanogen in the past...
The default double lock screen is a major hindrance for daily use with stock and the only viable alternative right now.

[Q} cyanogenmod?

Does anyone know if cyanogen will ever come to the charge? I've seen rumors and and some threads but nothing concrete
Development is for releases of ROMs/Kernels/Mods/etc not to start threads and ask questions. Also, I'm sure no one would mind if you started working on it yourself...

Since nobody wants to give you a straight up response, having been using a Fascinate from the beginning, based on that cycle, it is probably a year out if I had to guess. That's if people are actively working on it I suppose. We just now got it working well on the Fascinate...look at the Fascinate launch date, make a few assumptions, and do the math. Unless something huge happens I would expect it to be a long time, if ever. The one saving grace for this phone is probably its similarities to many other phones like the GalaxyS line and NexusS. Nobody knows when.
Likes the poster above me said, there's no definitive information. I'd say that's the worst thing about the Charge. Not the low RAM or the lack of official GB it's just not a huge scene. Look @ the Galaxy S2, not even released in the U.S. and it's already got Cyanogen. Kind of sad to see such a beautiful phone not getting the attention it deserves.
I'm not expecting much in the way of Charge development. I kind of knew when i got it as a replacement for the fascinate that it was a holdover till March (my 20 month upgrade eligibility). At least i got a better camera, front camera and LTE for real nice chatting video.

That would be nice for sure.

Galaxy S2 got Cyanogen first because Samsung sent a phone to one of the devs a few months back.
I love my Charge! Came from the Fascinate and had plenty of time to try out CM7. The GPS on the charge is lightning fast right out of the box, touchwiz camera and video player are by far the best available. CM7 definitely offers more control, but the TW camera alone is enough to make me stay.

i think i read samsung sent 4 phones to the guys at cyanogen mod.
that's pretty amazing if you ask me, to get support from such a major manufacturer.

While true, that should make everyone feel even worse about the dev scene for our phone (that the manufacturer cares enough to get dev for one of their phones but not the one we have).
That said, I've never had a phone with CM. I'm completely happy with the stuff put out by Danalo, Nitro, and I'm sure I'll like kejar's stuff whenever I try it out.

I can tell you when CM7 for the Fascinate got stable and MMS finally got fixed, o tried it out, and compared to all the other Touchwiz based roms, its ridiculously fast. The BML/MTD implementation is above and beyond any TW deodexed, debloated, voodoo ext4 type of rom. That's not to discredit those roms, but a stable CM build with a good kernel literally turned my Fascinate into a whole new device more than a year into its life.

Just tried ICS Rom on my Vibrant; why can't we have this for SGS4G?

I recently upgraded from Vibrant to SGS4G and I'm very satisfied overall (I hate that changing Rom's isn't as simple a process as it was on the Vibrant). Even though I know the hardware is nearly the same, my experience on the SGS4G has been much smoother: less lag, snappier performance, better battery life... even a higher Quadrant score (1600+ vs 1200+).
I haven't sold my Vibrant yet, so I thought I'd try ICS--man, what a mistake! It's so slick that it hurts to go back to my now seemingly-clunky SGS4G. I'd have been better off not knowing what I was missing.
So why does it seem like there is no work being done on an ICS port for the SGS4G? Is it because the phone is less popular than the Vibrant (less handsets out in the wild)? Or has everyone just moved on? And if the Vibrant and SGS4G are so similar, why can't the Vibrant port be modded somehow for the SGS4G? I'd do it myself if I had the time and the know-how...
In any case, would putting some cash up spur some developers to get a working ICS rom for the SGS4G? I know I'd be willing to kick in $20 and I'm sure there are plenty of other people on the forums who would do the same.
ICS will be available once the search feature gets fixed. Seems a lot of sgs4g users are having issues with using it.

what search feature?
I think it was a subtle attempt at humor, in reference to the search feature for XDA forums. Meaning that the topic has already been brought up. You know, the typical sarcastic response that has nothing to do with the post.

The two really are only similar in looks. The vibrant was much more popular so it had a lot more dev support. I also am willing to kick in $20 for the cause.
when i move to cali and make my super computer in a month or so maybe raver and i can start something and get help from the legends aka krylon
Because if you give the people what they want, all you get is more *****ing and moaning about how broken it is.
If you hold back and only give people what they need, they only ***** and moan about what they want and ignore the fact that what they have is broken to all hell
<3 OEM/ISP's and their inability to give serious time to updates
Most of the time the reason we don't have an update ( Like ICS ) is because we're waiting for the underlying sourcecode from the OEM for that version of Android. IE: why did we have to wait so long before we got GB ?
