The last month or so I have a problem with my phone rebooting constantly when the CPU gets stressed when cold. I am barely able to make a call after I have been outside for a while, and I'll have to wait for it to get warm again.
I have tried several different ROM's and several different Kernels, but the problem persists.
BTW: This is not "extreme" temperatures, it's around -5*C to +3*C. This is what I find really weird, because I didn't have this problem earlier this winter (when -20*C is normal.)
Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem?
Thanks.

Possibly moisture inside the phone which is condensating once it gets warm?!
Stick it on top of a radiator for a few hours and also get it a case - that's the best advice I can offer!
Hope this helps

Hi people,
I have a question, I've been reading these forums a lot but now I have a problem that I don't really understand:
My HTC Trinity that has served me well does not want to boot at normal temeratures 21C - 70F. The akward thing is that if I put it in the freezer for 10 mins, it starts working , doesn't get hot. As it reaches 20+C it freezez or doesn't want to wake up from sleep anymore.
Any ideas as to why this happens it's clearly a hardware fail but what part of it ?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe it's the battery......did you tried it with other batteries....?
It maybe that you have a poor connection within the phone being affected by thermal expansion. Might also be moisture condensation in your phone (made worse if repeatedly placed in and out of a freezer) that requires drying out.

I'm guessing it's not the battery as when I put it in the freezer I take the battery out. Also, while the phone is off the battery charges normally, without heating up or anything.
The theory of a faulty contact makes more sense but then which one ? I do now have a star shaped screw driver with me (I'm travelling for the moment) but I'll try and open the phone once I get back to a more tinkering friendly environment.
I have put it since in a drawer and it has been waiting for me quietly. In the mean time I bought a Sony Xperia X1 which is an excellent phone. I would still try to fix my trinity, I'd use it exclusively as a GPS if it works.
Any other theories as to why this might happen or what should I do to fix it?
Thanks guys for the useful replies !
When issue occurs will it power up plugged into charger?
As BundyR stated there is a poor connection somewhere. Also known as a "cold solder joint". The trick will be having device apart but still being able to power it up at the same time and start poking around with a toothpick and a magnifying glass starting with the battery contacts and moving on from there.
good day.
Hey everyone!
My problem with random shut-downs on the captivate became unbearable, and I kept searching through threads for a solution, and I finally found this:
http://uk.androlib.com/android.application.org-bluesteel-cka-qxnim.aspx
This app doesn't let your CPU completely turn off when on standby.
I used it for a whole day and no shut-downs.
Usually, I'd get at LEAST 3 shutdowns a day.
I hope this helped you all.
What have you done to be getting random shutdowns? I've flashed multiple roms and used modded framework files and still I never get a random shutdown.

Not bad. Wouldn't you want to have the convenience of NOT worrying about random shut downs (with or without) the app tho? I guess its just me, but those things would really irk me. lol

It's just pure luck. Some phones will randomly shutdown regardless what ROM you use. Some don't.
The only true solution so far is get a warranty replacement, or maybe couple replacements (the refurbs you get back may still suffer the same problem). Samsung itself has no clue what's the cause of it yet last time I checked.

CKA is a possible solution for one of the anomalies that causes shutdowns. For additional information, use the forum's "Search" function and look for "Captivate Keep Alive."
i just starting to get shutdown once a day started 4 days ago. i trying to uninstall 1 app at a time to see what happen. just uninstall dolphin browser v4.0.

Really? Well, this worked for me, and I had it pretty bad with those random shutdowns (even happened to me on stock 2.1 before flashing).
I think some people might be getting random shutdowns due to certain apps.
I 2nd that. I installed Keep Alive because my would shut down once a day after full charge but only if GPS is on. Mine doesn't shut down if GPS is off. Now it's been 3 days without any shut down and I leave GPS on continuously.
my phone shut down (1 time) daily, and i'm unable to reproduce the shutdown. maybe it' a memory leaks, it shuts down when it runs out of ram. going to reboot my phone (1 time) daily to see what happens...

I concur, I never had any shutdowns until I went to cog 7... And for the first week I didn't have any shutdowns, only after installing apps did this problem start. So I think you are correct that out has something to do with certain apps. Probably an app that is not fully compatable with android 2.2... I just wish I could figure out which app is causing this issue.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
My phone keeps shutting off also. At first thought it was software, but even with a clean install of 2.1 with Odin and nothing added to it, it still did it. Then I thought it was the SD card, but still not it. I started noticing a pattern with it doing fine for 11-16 hours with a full charge depending on how much I used it, but it eventually shuts off. Every time I turned it back on, the battery is at <65%. I completely drained the battery last night and charged it back up and now it's doing it at 70%.
Anyone in this thread that has had at least 1 random shut down, or more, should look into a warranty replacement. A perfectly good working phone shouldn't shut down for the hell of it or because it "runs out of memory"
I went through this before and messed with the phone for a few days taking off apps, re-flashing etc... ultimately the problem went away when I simply just asked for a replacement unit.
Can anybody help me. For whatever reason when my phone is charging randomly when i pull it off the charger the screen wont come on. The backlight comes on. the hardware keys light up. but no ones home. i have to do a battery pull to fix it. It has happened thru blackout, codefire, and jellytime so I dont know that it is a rom issue. But im not overclocked. Im havent changed the governor, just running straight up jellytime 29 right now. Please anyhelp would be appreciated. this happens more often than not.

Hey, I am sorry to say that my DHD suffers from the same bug. I've exhausted every angle I can think of to try and fix it but have no solution yet.
If your problem is the same as mine then you should notice the problem stops when you leave wifi turned off altogether - not an ideal situation but one I have been working around using an unlimited data plan.
Was going to return it to HTC for mending (24 month warranty) but then remembered that I changed the receiver myself and there's a mark inside the casing which is a dead giveaway.
Could you post a logcat? I'll get one from mine too and see if a real dev can see a fix.
Here is an old thread I started when this happened to me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734707
Sure. How do you do a logcat. Actually I can probably find it on here. Once I figure it out Ill post. .

Hi,
It sounds like it might be a battery problem.
Do you have access to another one?

hi
ordered one from e-bay 3 weeks ago. still waiting for it.
really hope it's battery issue.
forgot to mention, after phone is shutting down with battery 90+, I turn it on and get battery around 10%. needs to restart it correctly again to get the correct percentage of the battery...
Hi,
I have the same problem. Did you fix it ?

I have the same problem too, any news please ?
Try this:
[FIX] Random reboots/shutdowns. Pictures added!
From the posts. It does seemed its a battery issue. It happens to my last device. But do give feedback after the new battery arrives.
Hello guys,**
Well few days ago I accidentally dropped my Nexus 5 in a glass of water for just 1 sec. So I immediately switched it off and wait a bit to let dry then restarted it, and all seemed to work fine. But just some days later and up to now the phone boots up all fine as usual to the lock screen, and from there I can pull down the notification bar (and navigate through it, activate/deactivate wifi, etc..) but when I unlock it to get to the home screen it becomes all back and nothing appears on the screen even though the phone is still on.*
It's really confusing and weird. When I call the phone it rings (so no signal or sound problem) but I can't still access the screen to take the call as it's all back and unresponsive.
Following some suggestions I disassembled the phone and cleaned it dry but same results again! So now I think the problem is somehow related to the motherboard, coz as you might notice on some of the pictures attached, it seems that some plastic parts have melt down to cover other smaller parts. Anyway guys,*I'm just wondering if some of you guys had experienced something like that and if you were luckier*to find a solution or any directives that could help. Or you even think that's a motherboard problem like, do you know any ways to fix that o buy a new one somewhere??
PLEASE!!
Sorry apparently, I can't publish links until I get like 10 posts or plus..
But anyway guys, I'd really appreciate your help.
Why did you power it on and short circuit it on purpose for??
Bump
@SekouCheikh
Maybe it's a coincidence that you dropped it in water and this happened a few days later. Once in a blue moon mine does something similar to this (although not usually as start up only after lots of use), but I think it's related to an app or xposed. I only notice it after installing a bunch of crap again. Maybe try a factory reset (do it though the computer) just to see if it is somehow not hardware related? That's what I would try first.
Help please
Ttt
Wait... Are you seriously posting from 2 different accounts??
<...>
First, simply try to factory reset or flash a new rom. There is not enough evidence to be sure it's a hardware problem, it could just as well be a coincidence that it started happening just now.
