Odexed ICS ROM Anyone? - Captivate General

If there's any interest for an Odexed ICS rom, then I will be glad to develop one. Only if there's enough interest though. So who's in?

You should give it a shot. Your Odexed GB ROM came out while ICS was in full swing, and a lot of people still flashed it.

Add me to that list.

odex my ROM - then I'll try it. Nonwipe version pls.

ICSSGS is already an ODEX'd ROM. So you won't be the first :/

Oh yea that is true. Well that one doesn't have too many mods, its just pure source really if i'm not mistaken. Meh, I'll probably odex AOKP first then move on to nostalgia if I have time. It'll probably be a full wipe tho just to be safe, lol.
Damn it just flashed JW4 #firstworldproblems

Alright, I quickly cooked up a rom and posted it. Check it out!

hey, pnewman, thanks for this. I followed your OP instructions and flashed v6 after a wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and format /system...
everything booted up fine. Perhaps I'm misreading the instructions, but it seemed to me I should have found the "goodies" installed like gapps, dsp manager, etc.? If these are on my phone after booting, I cannot find them...
any thoughts?
thanks!

PLEASE WIPE DALVIK CACHE.SYSTEM WIPE. AND IF THE FAILS UID MATCH UNDER OTHER IN RECOVERY
V2---------im sorry in my rush to throw this out i kinda skipped some stuff and left old meta's in so that caused problems. this is completely redone with all the apps working, NO FC's. no install problems. and a whole new kernel variant from gumbo. (idk which build though). i tried to fix every reported issue. this will stay a trend i promise . any issues just report it and i will find out why. a wipe is recommended unless you want to try flashing over the first version. idk what will happen then. ok but here is V2-----------
V3---------
took expresso out as it caused problems. some people are getting and some are getting strange results. this is considered a beta until V4 or 5 so enjoy the speed and everything. tell me how it goes!-----
V4---------created a rom based on darchs new V2 legend. as of now it is 50/50 working not working. people have told me that pressing wait and then restarting the phone works. or just pressing wait instead of FC. anyways its the same gbhil kernel that is the fastest i have used. lets hope this fixes the FC for some. expresso is included automatically. i will change later for others-------
everything works. any problems just comment.
I have had like 20 requests for this so ill post a thread on it. i would put it in the damage customs thread but i dont want it to get lost .
so basically it is Darchs Legend release and a variant of gumbos kernel with alot of extras i added. like expresso and some tweaks to icons and stuff. you will need to do a wipe and install unless you have darchs legend. this contains the legend frameworks that is why. i also made this because my fav apps are friendstream and news.
all i did was copy and paste. ALL credit goes to Damage, Gbhil, and Darchstar. their incredible work created this rom.
please refer to these threads for issues
Darchs-http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645491
this has the best of both worlds. hope you like.

I may be wrong but I don't believe any ROMs work with our phone yet. What I did in the mean time was just root using the fastboot method and flash CWM. Works like a champ
that's funny because netarch said last week they would work.
2.3.4 stock rom please devs!
The kernel works (I have it on my phone) as netarch stated, but rom's I *BELIEVE* are not compatible

I said the kernels should work fine, and roms possibly.
On closer inspection of a system dump from an ns4g there are some differences that will prevent current custom roms from working properly.
I'd need a guinea pig with an ns4g to assist me in testing to find out the exact changes necessary to make them compatible.
Atm there are at least 2 files I've found that would need to change.
You can go ahead and flash Net's kernel and start overclocking though!
I ended up getting so used to stock 2.3.4 rom that I am still on it!

Did you have any trouble deodexing any of the apks? Mine keeps failing on NetworkLocation.odex. I just pulled the apk and odex files out of the origi_app folder to get around it.
Ok, so this is a stock deodexed ROM for the NS 4G. I am not a dev, you flash this at your own risk. With that being said, Im running it and I havent found anything wrong...yet. It does have netarchy's bfs kernel, you will need setcpu to oc, it is good up to 1.4. Your phone may not be. Do not check set on boot in setcpu until you know your phone is stable. You WILL have to flash superuser in recovery, you can flash it right after you flash the ROM, no need to reboot. So, here it is...
O yea, I added spare parts, CM file manager, and CM mms.apk so it doesnt have to be white...

Best GB ROMs?

I want to go back to GB as I'm not satisfied with the ICS ROMs I've tried (only had this phone a few weeks). Dev board is flooded with ICS, any GB suggestions?

Peter Alfonso's GPA19 ROM is the most stable one that I tried. Look for Peter Alfonso's site and click the Downloads link for crespo. I would post a link here, but XDA's nonsense won't allow it.
Download the 12-07-11 one to get the latest GB version. There aren't a lot of customizations like CM, Oxygen, MIUI, etc., but it's stable as hell. The latest Oxygen (2.3.2) has a REALLY obnoxious, and largely ignored, backlight notification bug where you have to reboot to get the lights to go out... only way I've ever found to fix it is to install another kernel. However, Peter Alfonso's got one of those too... just go to his site and it should be on the second page of the "blog."
I know you said you didn't like ICS, and I didn't either at first, but Pete's ICS ROMs are also great and very stable. The latest is 01-30-12, and you can get it from the same crespo download page.
question.
hey man i got a question, could i use peter alfonso's rooted stock rom for gingerbread (right?) when downgrading, right? instead of re rooting it.

Wow, really. I don't have any ICS envy seeing how sweet those kangs are. They're smooth as butter and stable too! Checking my phone, my current uptime is 132 hours (5.5 days) since my last reboot, which was to flash the latest kang back then.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Both of his ROMs are pre-rooted, so no, you won't have to re-/root anything. But since you're going from ICS to GB you'll have to wipe everything, so there's no real "downgrade" path.
From a rooting perspective, the only difference I've noticed, that's kind of annoying, is that his GB ROM contains busybox and his ICS ROM doesn't. It's not a deal-breaker since there are Market apps to add it in, but it's kind of annoying that the binary has to be re-linked after each update/flash.

Im asking that if i can reverted back to gingerbread version without loosing root, may i install his pre-rooted stock without loosing root. Thats all, but since you mentioned it, im relived to revert it back. but i couldnt find his link could you provide me one? Also is it regular to flash it back to gb or is there a special method to do it?
I can't post links yet because our fine friends at XDA say that I need to post more for the privilege. Pfft.
You should be able to type peter alfonso downloads crespo and get to the page. 12-07-11 is the latest GB version (GPA19).
There's no "special" method for flashing, just do what you would do when going from one incompatible ROM to another... wipe data/factory reset, format cache partition, format /system, wipe dalvik cache. There are probably a million different combinations that different people will give you for the proper install, but that's what I normally do.
Tryout CyberGR's CM7 MOD and you won't go back:

Cannot Install Custom Kernel

This is a strange problem that I only started to have once I installed Team Nekkid 7.2 RC dated 3/29.
I can flash the ROM no problem, wipe dalvik and fix permissions and I'm good to go without any issues. But if I flash the ROM, then either morfic or faux kernel, then gapps, when I go to wipe dalvik, all I get is a quick screen flash with no option to actually wipe dalvik.
I go back and wipe the overall cache completely, fix permissions, the reboot. I am now stuck at the morfic boot animation until i pull battery.
If i try to install a Faux kernel, same thing happens with dalvik, but gets stuck at the blue LG screen.
Once i battery pull and get back to CWM, i wipe everything, reflash ROM and gapps, wipe dalvik and fix permissions no problem and boot up into whatever ROM i choose.
EDIT: Went back and flashed Bionix 1.4.1 and was able to flash a Faux kernel and wipe dalvik. Booting up this ROM now.
I also have NO problem with ICS ROMS/kernels.
When you say NO PROBLEMS with ICS ROMs, does that include Google Maps and the stock browser working perfectly??
Which ICS ROMs have you tried? How is battery life?
Thanks!

I did all of that. I flashed the kernel before and after gapps but end up with the same result.
I have a feeling there is an issue with the CWM since I am constantly flashing roms/kernels and have never had these problems before. I'm at work so I cant use the Nvidia tool to flash CWM so I have to wait until I get home.

I usually just follow the instructions precisely by the OP. (Wiping/formatting, flashing rom, gapps, restart + let 10 min stand if required by OP) I have not installed another kernel that what the ROM has included. Should I try that? If yes, which one? I currently have EGB AOSP ICS 4.0.4

I've tried 3 different ICS roms and read hundreds of posts and found nothing that would fix the maps and browser issues. I guess I have to wait a bit more for the devs to work on them. Maybe the lack of drivers is the problem.

I know the close/reopen "trick," but I thought there might be a ROM that just has the Gmaps working. If there's none I'll just wait. Is Owain's unofficial 55 based on 4.0.4 ? I'm also going through his thread now in hopes of finding it. I'll probably just flash and see then.

Flashing CM10

Hi all,
I'm still fairly new to the rooting scene but am eager to flash Bruce's CM10 build currently in the developer section? Is there anything special I must do before I flash his rom? I am still on ICS firmware and running Venom 1.1.
Thank you,
Ryan
Im guessting that you are still unrooted. You will need to be s-off and rooted to flash cmx. Thee are tutorials all over the forums and on YouTube. Im away from my computer right now or else I would link you.

No. Nothing special.
If you're running Venon ICS you should be set up properly.
Just don't use Superwipe script to clear before flashing. Use the format all partitions except SD card option in 4EXT instead.
Be sure to make a backup of your Venom ROM first. CM10 is very much a Beta build. While it works pretty darn well, there are some quirks. You might not like it enough to keep it so make a backup.

On a side not, because I am curious, how come I don't have to upgrade my firmware to run Jelly Bean. Changing from Gingerbread to ICS I had to go through a whole process of downloading something I still don't understand.

First off...don't flash something you don't understand. Take the time to understand it. I promise it will pay off in the long run. As you understand more you'll be able to create your own combinations of different elements to really customize your ROM. Though fair warning, it's easy to get carried away and become a full fledged flashaholic!
Second, you don't need to upgrade firmware for JB because it's very similar to ICS. They work on the same firmware. Gingerbread was VERY different from ICS and the firmware was not interchangeable.
