[Q] How do I install a codec on Windows Phone 7? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone!
I have a short question and I hope that the answer is also somewhat short.
How do I install a DirectShow Codec that is written for Windows PC's (32 and 64 bit) on a Windows Phone?
If it's possible... please tell me how to do it.
Kind regards,
Charmacas

This is not possible unfortunately. You'll need a program, such as Handbrake, to convert the files into a format acceptable for Windows Phone.

DirectShow codecs are not supported by WP7, unfortunately. But you may convert files on PC/Mac (as ken52787 said) or stream from PC (personally I recommend you QloudMedia app).

Hmm... you both said what I already thought... Da**
Converting the files is not acceptable. I need to view them straight away. If there's no solution to maybe convert the installation file I think I have to give up. :-(

Well, technically WP7 does have installable codecs. I don't know if you could make them work on a stock ROM, and it would certainly need to be interop-unlocked at least, but you could try putting a codec DLL in the Windows folder and adding the required registry keys and values.
That said, it would need to be an ARM DLL written against a recent CE kernel (ideally 6 or 7), not an x86 DLL written against NT. (CE supports a subset of the Win32 API, so just recompiling may not be enough.) At the very least, an unmodified Win7 DLL wouldn't work!
There is one other option: You could write an app that implements the decoding (you said "codec" but I assume you only need the decode half). This wouldn't let you play files through the Zune player on the phone, but it would (in theory) let you watch/listen/whatever to your content if there was a way to get it into the app. ote that this would need to be software decoding, of course.

If you have the directshow codex on your PC, you can trick zune with a registry edit to open the file and directly convert the media file into one that's accepted by wp7.

Standalone Flash 6 player found from .....

Macromedia themself. And distributed by Microsoft. Here is the story.
Hi,
I got this info from the Modaco board an decided to dig
into it (tweak it a bit)
http://www.modaco.com/Beta-Macromedia-Flash-pla-t118617.html
This exe file is directly from a download at microsoft.com
and is a true Macromedia stand alone flash (.swf) player
for Windows mobile 2003 and higher (ARM)
SmartPhone
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/tutorials-dl_sp.mspx
PPC
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/tutorials-dl_ppc.mspx
PPC Phone Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/tutorials-dl_ppcpe.mspx
But the players are basically the same (tutorial.exe = a projector)
In the pc world this player is known as saFlashPlayer.exe.
The version of this player is Macromedia Flash Player 6.0 r79
You can also create a standalone EXE file (projector) from a swf file.
Copy the file (or the upxed one) to any folder (or in Storage)
and run it once. It will automaticaly create the registry
entries for you to play .swf file from explorer (or total commander etc)
Perhaps a 7 version will be found as well somewhere....
Have fun,
Cheers
ps: I included the HPC version as well
Seems to Work fine on Hermes WM6.
But has this some command line options, so i can start a projector in fullscreen mode when i launch ?
Other way to start a swf in fullscreen ?
Thanks
Thanks, thanks, thanks...
I searched a lot of days for some realy working standalone player. I messed up with some activeXes, not working fp7_ppc_en.cab flashLite 2.1 3.1 junky....
and this is exactly what I need. exceent.
Single exe file, just copy it and go !
(But myabe is a little bit outdated... it is version 6.0) But it doesnt matter, it is working with a charm.
thanks.

To get placebo streaming working do the following (my ftp transfers at around 3mb per second to my phone so YMMV)
1. Setup filezilla server on pc (or another ftp app)
1.1 Adjust windows firewall if running it.
2. Install ANDFTP from market and punch in details for your ftp server
3. Log into ftp server select the file to transfer, if encountering errors like I was change the mode from "passive" to "active"
4. Once transfer has started click HOME so the transfer continues, if you hit back it will end the transfer
5. Open the Divx Player
6. Launch the .avi you are currently transferring
7. Sit back and enjoy!!!
I am also trying to get cifs share on my sdcard working so can stream direct but having no luck, would love someone with more experience to provide some feedback.

No currently not supported.

does this blog post by Jean-Baptiste Kempf (Aug 28) mean that VLC is ready for RT??

http://www.jbkempf.com/blog/post/2013/VLC-2.1.0-rc1
I haven't seen any of the news organizations comment on the last blog post yet by JBK. He mentions Windows RT in one of the bullets, but I'm not tech savy enough to interpret the lingo.
Can anyone help me out in translating his blog post in relation to windows RT?
Says WinRT not windows RT. Somewhat confusing but the 2 are not one and the same. However now that WinRT is cracked I doubt it will be long until Windows RT is also cracked. As it stands right now VLC is not on the windows store for x86 either, I expect both ARM and x86 versions to be coming very soon though. Source code is there so it might well be possible to compile it for RT manually right now.
if you have time, can you explain the difference?
WinRT - Correct term for windows 8/RT metro apps, or rather the framework they run on. WinRT is a set of functions and libraries etc that all metro/modern/start apps use in order to run in both windows 8 and windows RT.
Windows RT - Windows 8 on ARM processors.
I think winRT is meant to mean windows runtime. Windows rt doesn't really mean anything though.
Ah, but it does. It means that Microsoft's branding folks are *still* braindead. They'l be the last people left after the zombie apocalypse; nothing they have would be of interest.
Seriously, this is from the people who brought you "Windows Phone 7 Series" instead of something like Xphone or Zune Phone or some such. I thought they canned that guy, but apparently it wasn't confined to him...
Is there a way to build this state of progress from source to test it? I only found a tut for cross-compiling it for old arm (pda).
Cheers

They only posted source to VLC itself, not the MinGW toolchain required to target WinRT so we can't test windows 8/RT app support yet on x86 or ARM.

Oh Thank you very much for your answer (so fast). So good to know. Still waiting for a good free mkv player. "mobile.hd media player" (trail expired) and "PowerDVD mobile" (trail running) are very very good to play mkv, but sadly not free...

download VLC on another PC. Control+R. In the window which appears click Add. Click the little arrow on the convert/save button, click convert. Leave it at default settings (or play with it if you wish), set the output file to "file.mp4" of course changing file for the name you want. Hit start. Takes awhile though (about as long as the original file itself takes to play sometimes).
In my life I have never come across an mkv file, ever. Convert it to something else, play on RT.
Hey, I'm aware of that we can play mp4 files on our RT, but sadly my hd-movie-collection is 500GB+ and it would be hard to convert all the videos. There are also some players for the RT, which converts mkv to mp4 just before you want to watch, and it also takes a while. I was just stunned as I saw, that our RT is able to play that 10GB+-mkv-file flawlessly (with the mentioned players), without any framedrops or stucking or audio-lagging. So I think, I just wait a bit...

It wouldn't be that hard to convert your MKV files to MP4. No re-encoding is necessary, just a re-writing of the files in MP4 containers. It takes only a few minutes/GB. Just find a converter that will batch process. I think that MKV/AVI to MP4 (for non-RT Windows) does that. It'll take all night or all afternoon to go through 500GB, but it won't require any supervision.
Keep in mind, though, that a main reason why MKV is the preferred format for ripped movies is that it has better subtitle and audio track support (ex. more than one audio track, whether it be two different languages or, say, 2.0 English and 5.1 English) than MP4 does. You might lose these features on any movies that have them if you convert them. If your movies don't use those features, or if the only subtitled movies that you have have the subtitles burned into the video, then you should be fine.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot Though most of my movies are dual-lang, I would try some of them to be put in a new container with single-lang

FYI, I just tested on a movie of mine, and my initial estimation was quite a bit off, so my mistake on that. It takes several minutes per GB, not 10-30 seconds (it can take 10-30 seconds for a 350MB, low-quality rip, just not for a full GB). So, we're talking about a batch process that will take the better part of a day to go through 500GB, but, still, that's not so bad (considering the sheer size), since you don't need to babysit it any. You might start a batch of the entire collection and let it go for a day or you might split it up and do, say, 200GB overnight one night, 200GB overnight the next night and so on, so as not to tax the system too much or make it unusable for work or play during the day.
VLC 2.1 has released
On the release page under mobile they say:
Partial port to WinRT, for Windows 8, 8.1 and WP8.

WinRT is the API used for start apps. Windows RT is windows 8 running on ARM (so both contain winrt). You wouldn't be the first to mix the 2, nor the last, frankly microsoft shouldnt have given the 2 such similar names.
I'm guessing because they dont mention ARM or windows RT, its winrt on x86 only at this time.
Thank you soo much for your answer. I'm so happy that a well known member has given me the answer, and I'm so sad they we cannot profit from that vlc 2.1 on our arm

[Bug Report], NEXT Video button not working for LAN Mounted Files.

I can not advance to the Next Video using the advance button on remote LAN mounted files. Ok for local files.
When I press the Next button when playing a video it advances to the next file for local directories. If I do the same for a remote mounted directory (on my PC) the button does not work except for one specific condition described below
I am using Android 4.2 also tested on 4.1 and 4.4. My File Explores is "ES3 File Explore" but also tested on two others. I have MX Player Pro. My devices are Stick /TV devices for primary use as media player.
The only except is if the File names are in sequence by number it is OK. Movie012.mp4 will advance to Movie013.mp4. It will not advance to Movie014.mp4(if Movie013.mp4 is missing.) It wil not advance to different suffix Movie013.AVI or any other file that is not named Movie..

Locally on the device any names are OK.
On my Windows PC I use as a file server files named,
Movie001.mp4
Movie002.mp4
Movie003.mp4 Work ok
Movie001.mp4
Movie003.mp4 Wont work
Movie001.mp4
Movie002.avi
Movie003.mp4 wont work
Movie.mp4
SCIfiMovie.MP4
xxMovie.mp4 wont work
So 99% of the time it wont work. Only if you have a perfect sequence of file names will it work. And remember this is not a problem for local files. It is really a strange situation and probably not a high priority.

The problem is that MX Player doesn't has native SMB support. So, MX Player will not be aware of the list of files on that directory. It will try the next file based on the previous files name. If there is no similar files with next number, it will decide that it has reached the end of the file list & will quiet. This is to avoid infinite request. This is why the first sequence of your example works & others won't.
It will be resolved when MX Player gets SMB support.
