[Q] How to Unlock 'Samsung Google Nexus S GT-i9020T' for India Service provider - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought an unlocked Samsung Google Nexus S GT-i9020T from eBay. The Device works fine on TMobile network. When I got it to India and tried inserting an Airtel SIM in it. The phone shows complete Signal strength but says emergency calls only. On the lock screen it says insert SIM.
When I search for available mobile networks it shows my network but unable to connect to it. It does not even ask for unlock code when I insert a SIM from another carrier.
Is this because the phone is locked or is there some other problem?

The only lock you (might) have on that phone is the boot loader. Google phones are not carrier locked.
the problem lies elsewhere (I don't know where)

Thanks for the reply, i could see phone status as UNLOCK at Boot loader time, when i insert my sim (INDIA) it is not recognizing the sim/network.

stupid question:
Have you tried with another sim card?

your phone is bootloader unlocked but still it has network lock. unlock it for network(service provider)

GSM nexus devices are not looked to a carrier period.

Hi.
Your phone i9020T is unlocked from factory.
Your SIM tray is broken. It's a common issue if you have tried to insert a micro-Sim adapter.
Look at my EBAY's user "manuelpulgar".
I'm actually selling original ones.
Best whises.

This could be true. If the phone was sim locked, it would give a message. On the other hand, I also use a 9020T I had bought from US and it wasn't locked.
I suggest get it checked at a Samsung service center. Nexus s was officially released in India and Samsung will be able to help you.

Compare the IMEI code you can found beneath your battery on a sticker with the one displayed after typing *#06# command in dialer.
If they equal, then it can be an incompatibility problem.
I suppose Nexus S cannot be locked to an operator.

[CLOSED][Q] Unlocked Relay getting no signal on a non-TMo carrier

EDIT: No feasible solution found, so I had the device sold. Question closed.
UPDATE ON THE ISSUE: It seems that it would not recognize WCDMA networks (GSM works properly), hence no signal on my WCDMA-only SIM card. Any ideas?
Hello all, new joining the Relay 4G forums
Long story short, so I got my Relay 4G today, but it just wouldn't fully recognize my China Unicom SIM card. Symptoms and information:
1) No signal
2) Correctly displays my carrier's name, but says "emergency calls only"
3) Can search for available carrier networks, including China Unicom, but fails to register on the network - it says "unable to connect, try later"
4) The device has a correct IMEI instead of a generic one
5) Doesn't prompt me to enter SIM UNLOCK CODE when I first plugged in the SIM card
6) SIM unlocking procedures posted in the forum doesn't help - the phone should be unlocked when I bought it
7) It recognizes another SIM card from China Mobile (WTF!!) and works properly
8 ) China Unicom uses the 2100MHz band, which is supported by Relay 4G
So now I'm out of ideas... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

...So this phenomenon means this really is SIM-locked? Good, I'll revert to ICS and try unlocking with that method...
One question: why doesn't it prompt me to enter unlock code when I inserted the SIM?
@croogrog It didn't turn out to be that simple... SIM unlock procedures didn't work at all even though I got all the timings right. I think the problem isn't caused by SIM lock... But what can it be?

More strange symptom: another SIM from China Unicom got recognized quickly after I inserted it. I don't understand this...

If other SIMs are working and you are able to call someone your phone was unlocked when you got it.
If your SIM isn't working it could be that you need a new one from your provider.
I had that problem years ago. My phone was too new ...or my card too old.

Hmm, my not-working SIM is bought just days ago... I'll go to my carrier's deck and see if they could swap me a new card.

From a local importer at TaoBao (China's equivalent of eBay).
UPDATE ON THE ISSUE: I changed my SIM card for a new one at my carrier's but still won't recognize. Adding in the symptom that it can recognize another China Unicom SIM, I guess I can conclude that the problem lies within this particular SIM.

Best test would be to try another carrier sim all together. Not china unicom. See if the phone takes it. That way you will know for sure that it's unlocked and works. Unfortunately, there's no way to check if it's unlocked, other than to test sim cards
My next suggestion would be to consult samsung for a warranty repair, because your phone might be faulty. Or consider asking the seller that you got it from to send you another one. Let us know if you still need help

1. I checked with a China Mobile SIM and it works. Also, as said before, another China Unicom SIM also works. Only this specific SIM doesn't. It IS unlocked when I purchased it.
2. No way for a warranty - I'm in China and this is a T-Mobile USA device that many local "smartphone gurus" haven't even heard of, let alone "repairing" it.
3. The importer only has one such device in perfect condition (others have plenty of worn and torn), so exchanging is not possible...
I'm thinking of setting up an alternative solution for now...
More update on the issue: even on the China Unicom SIM that got recognized, it wouldn't connect to WCDMA/HSPA+ networks. Did an experiment: I used *#*#4636#*#* to adjust network modes, and when the device is on GSM only / GSM/WCDMA auto / WCDMA preferred, it would receive signal like normal; however, choosing WCDMA only, no signal is received. It seems like the real issue lies within the device after all...

...The Relay isn't a WCDMA device.
Even though the relay is a US tmobile device i would still try to contact samsung. They may be able to help you and it can't hurt. This is certainly not the first Relay to leave the US and incur problems...

What? I mean, my carrier has the HSPA+ 21Mbps/42Mbps it supports... What do you mean by it not supporting WCDMA?

If I understand correctly, the network mode menu option for WCDMA in the CM10 ROM is left over from the D2, which is a phone of similar spec which our developers based our ROM on. It doesn't do anything on the Relay.

But it DOES switch network modes... Or so I think, judging from the symptoms.
The first SIM only supports WCDMA(HSPA+), and when inserted, it can find my carrier's network but can't connect. On the second SIM which is compatible with both GSM/WCDMA, I lose signal only when "WCDMA only" is chosen, and under this situation the symptom is same as above. I assume that it can find my carrier's GSM network but not the WCDMA one.

Bump in vain. I guess I'll be selling this phone if the issue is really within the phone itself...

Help - Unlock Carrier tool

I have a polish sim card which works fine with my other Iphone, when i insert the same sim card to my nexus 5 it can't register to any carrier !
Why is that, is there any solution for this bizarre problem ?
Thanks
You tried the sim with an iphone (works) and Nexus 5 (doesn't work). Did you try the sim in a third phone?
The Nexus 5 cannot be carrier unlocked because it was never carrier locked.
I don't have a third phone. Do you think that I should flash another radio ver. on the phone?
The Nexus 5 detects the sim card? If it does detect the sim card, I think your iphone's imei is somehow tied to the sim card.
What does it mean?
And how can I resolve it?
I would really appreciate any help ?
P.s.
Apparently a different sim (vodaphone) doesn't work in this phone either.
???
Has the vodaphone sim been activated?
If both sim cards do not work in the phone and the phone can see but not connect to networks, it may be possible that the phone is blacklisted? Is the imei correct?

That's friend phone....so....
He said that the sim (which doesn't work right now) worked before. I don't know about the Vodafone sim.
How can i find out that this phone is in the blacklisted?
Thanks again,
You can check the imei here: https://swappa.com/esn
Since the vodaphone sim is not active, it is not a good test of the Nexus 5. It would be best to try an active/working sim in the N5.
1. How can I know if my phone tied to the sim card ? (you mentioned it before)
2. Do you know this website http://www.imei.info/
Thanks
I don't know that site but the swappa site will tell you if the phone is blacklisted.
The only way to tell if the sim card is tied to the iPhone;'s imei is to try the sim in another phone to see if you can connect to the carrier network. In the USA, AT&T tie their prepaid sim cards to a phone imei.
As I mentioned before the sim card worked fine with my iPhone.
But the "fishy" story here is that the Vodafone's sim card doesn't work as well.
So it might be a blacklisted issue.
Your thoughts?
Did you check the imei on the swappa site?
Note yet
I would check the imei to make sure the imei is not blacklisted and does belong to a nexus 5.
I updated my friend to do so.
Thanks

Help with phone that thinks its not locked but it is

Hey guys, sorry for the confusing title.
Pretty much I got a Z5 from a friend who changed over to iPhone, it was locked to his network (Telstra) however, it shouldnt have been. as it was on a post paid plan and they dont lock devices on those plans.
Heres where stuff gets weird, so I went to a Telstra shop and asked them to unlock it, and they said it shouldnt be locked. so they checked anyway and said 'strange, it is locked, heres an unlock code'
so I was armed with an unlock code.
When I put in a sim from my carrier, Optus, the icon changes from the 'no sim' icon to just greyed out reception bars.
If I go to the mobile operators screen, it will not select Optus.
The small home icon is on Optus, but when I try and select it it says 'unable to register on network'
I purchased a Telstra $2 sim card to test, insert it and activate it and it appears to work perfectly!
I am not getting a prompt to enter my unlock code, so from what I can see theres nothing I can do D:
I dont have the original receipt so even though the handset is <1 year old I can't go to Sony (can i?) for help.
Heres some info you may ask me for:
status of SIM lock via USSD code:

Build: 32.2.A.5.11

Are you actually sure it is locked and its not just an unactivated or not working Optus sim? Your Sim Lock image is exactly the same as mine and mine is unlocked...

Can I unlock a phone without a sim card?

I requested a unlock code from ATT for my Lumia 640, surprisingly it was approved in less than an hour, I have the code but I don't have any kind of sim card that fits the phone is there anyway to enter the unlock code without a sim-card, I read any sim card should work. anyone know?
Unlocking can only be done in the AT&T network coverage region. Without a SIM card in the phone, it is not possible to connect the phone to the mast.

Ok but what I read is not to use the AT&T sim card only a non network sim card would trigger the entry for unlock code, but that doesn't add up if the phone needs to be connected to a ATT&T tower, which I assume there is one where I am. Actually a non network sim card is showing as valid but I get because the phone isn't unlocked yet it won't work. So it looks like I need a ATT&T sim card than, does that mean I would have to sign up for service with them? Or do I just buy a ATT&T sim card on ebay and unlock it to use on the network of my choice? Thanks
For specific questions, it is better to contact the mobile phone operator directly. Especially since you have an easy contact.
