Rootable tablet under $300? - General Questions and Answers

Hey all, I am looking to get a tablet.
I don't mind getting a refurb or a good condition used tablet.
Here is what specs I am looking for:
10-ish inch screen
Rootable
Dual-core processor
HDMI would be nice
USB slot and/or memory card slot
Prefer at least 16gb storage
So far, I have found the Viewsonic gTablet, Motorola Xoom, the Acer Iconia series, or the Asus Transformer...any others I should be looking at? Of those listed, which are my best bets?
TIA!

GEt on cowboom and look for some Asus Transformers. And if those aren't your cup of Tea they have zillions of tables for around 250.

ICAN! 10 Tablet new at SEARS today

Another new Tablet in SEARS lineup. Has 3G. Sketchy on hardware. Also, available at Frys, Walmart, KMart. Looks like the market to be flooded with tablets soon.
$499 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ICAN-10-Table...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1292201280&sr=1-1
That's a lot of bread for a 2.1 device. Hopefully it's not Telechips based.
According to the pics, this thing has 2 HDMI ports? Really?
http://www.ican.us.com/forums/
Looks like they just opened on 12/10... Nothing much there or on their site
" includes a DC wall plug power adapter at no additional cost!"
That pretty much sums up how this is going to turn out.
Wow, that thing has one big a55 bezel
If the spec is accurate, nice it has TWO micro sd slots and internal space. I shudder to think how screwed up that would be on the Gtablet
If you go to their web site they also make a seven inch version too. Some specs
are their too about both units. One of many that will be release in the coming
weeks.
Sure is expensive. Looks a lot like the Haipad M701-R I bought my daughter but bigger.

Bought this at Frys for $497. Demo unit in store had no internet nor wifi access. Only touch and feel product with no apps to try nor video nor music to run. Box provides no details on type of screen, nor processor. Looks like an ipad but cheaper feel to it. Will not open box due to 15% restocking fee. Oddly supposed to be 10.1" touchscreen but box say 7" touchscreen. Per barcode #80001, this product should be 10.1" screen.
Looks like an Ipad with Android 2.1 operating system but with ports for HDMI, miniSD card, ethernet port. Didn't see a sim card slot though it says 3G support. No info or details for flashing to Android 2.2.
Will hold until I can get more info. 15 day return policy 100% if unopened. Sears and Walmart offering but no availability.
If I can't find any good reviews or additional info, back it goes before 15 days.
May go back to the Viewsonic Gtablet if I can get for $279 after Christmas.
I thought I read the Viewsonic Viewtab 10 was a Atom based tablet able to dual boot Windows and Android (1.6??)... This was back when Sears mis labeled the model that initially ended up being the Gtab we are using...
Saw it at fry's today. Played with a bit, not too impressed. All buttons except for one were one sides. One big hump on back lower right corner, it was because of onboard Ethernet. Seemed slow and laggy.
It said 16gb 1ghz

no 2 usb 2 micro sd
Funny after looking at the link robeet posted for amazon...
The pics do not show the big hump in the back? The unit I had in my hands did have a hump only way they could fit a Ethernet port on the side, my wife thought it looked funny.
I can confirm they were to full size USB on one side, split far apart.
CPU type?

Sorry it only said 1ghz, Fry's is horrible on there info on display units.
From fry's website
# 1Ghz Processor
# 10" 16:9 Touch Screen
# Android OS 2.1
# Wi-Fi
# 16GB Hard Drive
# Webcam 1.3 meg (built-In)
# 2 mini USB Ports
# 1 Micro SD Port
# HDMI Port
# Built In speakers
# Head Phone Port
After looking at all the pics online all the images I could find online were the 3g version. Even fry's has both 3g and wfi version on there site but both pics are the same w/ 3 buttons. The one I hand in my hands only had one button.
Amazon selling for $406 and and J&R $399. The discounting continues. Well Frys, this item is coming back to you soon. No new info forthcoming and will not open the box due to 15% restocking fee.
Will wait for a $279 Viewsonic.
No Bluetooth? Plus the pictures on Amazon show two different bezel layouts on the front. So which is it?
icant ...had to. well would be better if i knew what cpu it has and memory specs are vague. going to get my wife an android tablet first of the year. leaning toward another g tablet when the price drops from the flood of tablets on the market. unless something with a bit more memory hits at a reasonable price. wife seems to be using my tablet a lot here lately ...i cant share

how's the viewing angle. I think I am willing to take a look at this device if it has viewing angles like the ipad or better.

[Q] Iconia vs. Transformer

This is a thread to help some people make a decision as to which tablet is better to purchase.
Staples has a coupon that will take $100 off of any of their tablets in store only. I have been to Staples (Out of stock, will not order online at the kiosk) Best Buy (Will not honor coupon), and the closest office depot is 30 miles away.
The coupon expires on the July 30, so I am hoping that staples is restocking their stores with more inventory.
My question is, which tablet should I/we purchase. I'm talking about a straight tablet, no docks or anything. Posts should be based on personal use and also about current developments in the respective forums (how much development is there for the device).
Thank you so much to anyone that posts a helpful comment.
I don't own an iconia, but I do own a transformer and I player a bit with an iconia, so I can provide some perspective. To me, the biggest difference between the two is the presence of a USB port on the iconia and its absence on the transformer. In order to use USB on the TF, you'd have to buy a dock. If I wasn't in the market for a dock, that would be an absolute deal breaker: there is no point buying a tablet with no USB port.
Aside from that, the TF has an IPS screen if that's important to you, but be careful as some IPS screens suffer from light bleed. It's a sharper and higher quality screen than the one on the iconia, but that will only be truly better if your screen doesn't bleed light.
Having said all that, perchance you are considering a dock, the TF is a better buy. With a dock, you essentially get two devices in one: a tablet and a netbook. The specs are identical, the apps you can run are identical. I think the TF has a slightly more active community on XDA, so if you want roms and custom apps, TF may again be a better choice. I think the TF is also cheaper: nowadays you can get a 16GB TF with a dock for the price of a 32GB iconia (in Canada, anyway).
Good luck with your choice.
Hey thanks man. The screen is a pretty big deal to me (seeing as it is the direct link between the UI and the user) but I have heard of a lot of defects that include light bleed.
I think that the dock is an awesome feature, though I feel that the price is kind of steep. I mean its half the price of the tablet (at least with the coupon it is). I am also really big into seeing ROM development as I am a flashoholic with my Evo. From what I can see there are more original ROM's on the TF forum and more ports on the Iconia Forum.
Thanks for your input. Anyone else?
Well, the dock being "half the price of the tablet" isn't relevant, particularly considering the $100 discount. Certainly, the existence of the discount doesn't make the dock somehow less valuable.
And, it's a perfectly decent price in general, given that it's not just a dock, or a keyboard/trackpad combo, but it also includes a full-size battery. Consider that Lenovo's keyboard dock, which does NOT include a battery, is $99.99.
Really, speaking for myself, I can't imagine owning any other tablet. The keyboard dock, being fully integrated with the tablet, is an entirely different animal than any other tablet on the market.
Good point.
How is the light bleed for you guys? Any other defects that you don't like?

Imho, price for what you get, there's absolutely no question it's the Iconia. No need for a dock to have USB, SD, or HDMI, it's all there. Add the fact that I was just at Target the other day, and they had them for $399.99 + they gave you a $50.00 gift card, which you could use to purchase a case. A previous poster said that more ROMS are out for the tf, that's a joke I haven't heard before, as one of the tf fanboyz was over in our forum offering to pay the first dev that got the Galaxy rom ported over to the tf. We've had that ROM for weeks.
In the end it will come to personal preferences and money. Do you want to pay more for the tf so you can have connectivity, and lightbleed? If so, then that's the tablet to shoot for, with a 357 magnum!
Just my. 02c
From what I can see, the tf has more original roms and the iconia has more ports. just something I noticed.

[Q] Android Tablet about $200

I am looking for a Android tablet for my mother as a gift.
It needs to be around $200 +/-, preferably in 7-10inches variety and not a cheap China clone model.
I saw the Amazon Fire and Lenovo Ideapad browsing around, just not sure...ideas and suggestions appreciated !!
Pete
I have a Vizio VTAB1008. I got it from Sams Club for $195.
So far I like it. The screen is 8" which I like, I though the 7" screens were too small.
I appreicate the reccomedation moto, anyone else have anything ?

New Android tablet or used cheaper with updated ROMs?

Heylo... I used to have an Acer A100 and was very happy with it, bought it refurbished for about $190 many months ago. It fell out of my cargo pants and cracked, so I've been looking for a replacement to purchase in February. I had thought about replacing the glass, but it seems the cost would be about $130 just for the parts (I have succesfully removed the glass, so it doesn't seem too challenging).
But then the Nexus 7 came out and I really dig a couple things about it: it's an Asus brand, and it's resolution. I started to compare Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and Tab 7.0 2, but didn't really want to deal with Samsung adapters. Then the A110 came out - MicroUSB, HDMI, expandable -- I'm pretty near sold.
But the Nexus 7 has a great case by Speck and much cheaper similar case, whereas the Acer A110 doesn't have anything similar. A good case is important to me.
Theeeen I started poking around and found out there is a Jelly Bean ROM for the A100. By far, A100 with a case is my cheapest option, the Nexus 32gb my most expensive. So my main concern really is, if I go with the A100 and depend upon community development of JB, is it a wise enough choice? I of course want something stable and fully functional.
Browse the forums for the device and see if they fit your wants. That would be the easiest.

[Q] What tablet should I buy? - Nvidia Shield Tablet vs Asus Zenpad S 8 Z580CA

Hi guys!
So I have decided to purchase a tablet and after doing a lot of thinking and research and after some time all come up to two candidates: Nvidia Shield Tablet vs Asus Zenpad S 8 Z580CA (the 4 gigs of ram version)
Could you help me decide wich one should I buy? What tablet is better for you and why? Also is there any better candidates in your opinion for this size?
Thank you very much in advance
Well Asus can kiss my A** because they suck & do not support their products. I will never buy another Asus product again. I purchased a Asus TF101 which was a great tablet when it came out. There was only one major update on it. I then purchased a Nexus 7 which was built by Asus. I had to send it in four times because of not charging & not being recognized by my computer via USB. Now I came to the Zenpad 8 which again will never receive a major update even though most other phone in the lineup did receive marshmallow. Asus KISS my A**!
