Okay, as the title indicates, I am seeking information on whether any individual or group has put any effort into reimplementing adhoc wifi in ICS.
I've run around the Android AOSP specific groups and the posts from Google mods indicate that adhoc was dropped for being "deprecated" and replaced by WifiDirect. The problem here is, there's absolutely no support for WifiDirect in Windows until Windows 8 is released, and the last time I checked, having millions of devices that rely on or use adhoc wifi is not what I'd call deprecated.
I've come across a couple of modified wpa_supplicants that work for other devices with ICS, but as of yet, there's nothing for ICS for the Xoom.
I am setting up a build environment in preparation for putting my own time into readding support for adhoc wifi, which I will then make available for everyone else to use as they wish (maybe the 'big' ROM developers will toss it into their builds /shrug) but first I want to ensure that I am not redeveloping the wheel.
Are there any out there that have already started (or done) this? If so, where are they hiding? Google is either failing, or these people are not making their work public as of yet.
Do you know tha last version of CM9 can see the HOC but can't connect
I'm also looking and the only rom to see HOC is CM9 but when you try to connect the only do is saved If i can help let me know

Hi,
Not sure if anyone is working on a VPN client for Android, but I think this is something a lot of people would find useful. Not sure if it is even possible to do solely from the app layer, but for folks who have rooted phones, I would think that if you can run a VPN client on linux, you should be able to run one on Android, no?
Has there been any work on this? Any thoughts on this?
Thanks
I'd love to see one. I'd be able to use it for work which would be awesome.
OpenVPN already exists
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447230&highlight=openvpn
but that is not userspace. The problem with userspace applications is that without root there is no way to add the proper routes to force traffic over the vpn.
Of course, with root you could probably write a graphical frontend to something like OpenVPN.
Geezzzz guys this is the last thing I needed. If my employer catches wind that I can run openvpn from my phone and connect in to the office network; I will never ever get any me time outside of the office. Its nice being able to claim that I am not able to find a internet connection to help do x,y,z or troubleshoot why idiot A cannot send email to idiot B.
I see that there's been a little development here:
There's a commercial product (http://mocana.com/NanoPhone-Android.html) and there's an open-source project (http://code.google.com/p/android-vpnc/), but that one sounds a little scary.
I do have a rooted phone (RC33/JF1.41). I'm wondering if someone could simply compile vpnc and the necessary libraries for the G1. Is it more complicated than that?
So how hard would it be to get vpn setup via openvpn on a rooted phone? (for someone who's not a dev, but isn't afraid to tinker)
Hello,
I will preface this by an apology if I am putting this in the incorrect place, or this is a topic that is well covered; but I so far have not been able to get solid information on this.
From what I understand, ICS is going to include and/or support Cisco AnyConnect . However, that does not help the many users out there still using legacy Cisco VPN solution at our workplaces.
Specifically AnyConnect (at least on android, the only flavor I have had experience with) does not support Group Authentication, and neither do the default VPN clients included on Android.
So far I have had success on my Samsung Epic 4G running Froyo using VPNC to connect to my corporate network, but now I am shopping for a tablet. Likewise I have friends at work who want an android tablet but since they can't easily connect to work to do very basic things, they haven't bought.
I don't want to need root just to get a proper VPN connection up and running. For one thing that leaves me dependent upon a tun.ko being available for the tablet, not to mention just getting root in the first place isn't always easy as it was for the Kindle Fire or my Epic. And I certainly am not going to recommend that for my less technical friends.
So all that exposition out of the way, it comes down to this simple question - will ICS have a built in client that will support IPSEC group authentication , or will such client be available to install without root and needing to install modules?
Thanks for your patience if this is covered elsewhere, but most everything I have found in searches here (and elsewhere) for is based on AnyConnect and my company's VPN doesn't support that, and they aren't going to change that anytime soon.
I apologize - this should probably have been in the Question forum.
I would also like to know the answer to this to. my work uses group authentication and there is no apps or anything that will do this!
I am looking for this information as well. I certainly wish Google and Cisco could sit down and get this figured out. Apple did and the iPads at work can VPN in but not my Transformer Prime. I knew this before I purchased it, but went ahead with it hoping this would be added/fixed with ICS.
I havent had a chance to try it yet on my GN but you can now create "IPSec XAuth with PSK" (AKA Cisco VPN). If you have the GSM version of the GN you might run into problems though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20627062
I have a VZW GN device which someone in that thread mentioned works. Since the key for my VPN is quite hard to type I'll try it tonight and post if it works tomorrow.
I know the Android 4.0 has launched,But ad-hoc was not added to the latest rom,it`s important to me ,so ,i want to know if or when it will be able to add to 4.0.
thanks
Someone over in the prime have a guide to get ad hoc to work with the prime. I'm on EOS 1.0 and unable to find the file which need to replace in order to get ad hoc working. Only wpa_supplicant exist in system/bin not wpa_supplicant2, so I'm unable to try the fix. Hopefully team EOS can explain why wpa_supplicant2 is missing from system/bin. Here's the link to the fix for the prime.

The root of the problem is that adhoc is a depricated technology. That being said, the reason we are having issues is adhoc conflicts with wireless peer2peer, or p2p. This is a new wireless technology possible because ics has implemented the config80211 Linux wireless api stack. Some of you may have noticed a new wireless interface named p2p0 which is a member of the wlan0 control group. Also you may have noticed that p2p is also broke. I believe this is why some ics devices utilize two wpa_supplicant binaries. Also it looks like the kernel filters ibss beacons when the p2p0 interface is up. But Im pretty sure I found the source and its an easy fix. ICS is a very different Android from past releases. ICS is very forward looking and continues to merge with Linux common. Adhoc looks doable but I recommended adhoc fans upgrade their phones

Hi there,
Is it possible that someone could develop a TeamSpeak 3 server for android? (Not the teamspeak 3 client, the server)
It would be awesome as you could run it on your phone and not have to run a pc 24/7. It coluld use wifi and 3G if you on the go.
I also though it may be possible that you can install in on linux for android using Linux Installer. Then install the linux server adition found here.
Please respond if you can try develop this or if you think its possible
Thanks
It *might* be possible but even if you do get it to work you will most likely have to keep it on wifi to not run up your bandwidth. But that all depends on how many people you plan on having connected to your phone.
Long story short: Could be possible but might run up your phones bandwidth.
Dude this is a nice idea!
rodrigo hernandez ®
yeah
Good idea. Ill support you
Thank you for your compliments
I normally always leave my phone at home with Wi-Fi on 24/7. I don't think it would be necessary to take it with me but I am sure 1GB would be fine for 3G.
I hope some people can help start developing
I would buy it if I had to!
!
im searching for this, i want to use this for inside network (with wifi hotspot) it will be a nice work ! hope some one develope this soon
ok, first, I'm disabled, in a chair, on the dole, and DIRT poor. This is pertinent because it means I can't afford a better device, I have to work within my means. Suggestions to upgrade my device will be ignored. Second, I use Windows, mostly. I CAN use Linux a BIT, but don't really want to, as it's not very intuitive or user-friendly, and my current PC hardware configuration has a LOT of difficulty running even the newest Linux distros. I consider myself pretty computer-savvy, been a freelance PC tech for 20 years now, so I've got some fairly advanced skills and knowledge. I think. I'll also say that my phone is rooted, and has CWM recovery installed.
What I need help with is porting my current rom, to remove ALL of the PHONE/SMS features, and ALL of the wifi power-saving features built into Android. Basically, I want it to function as a non-3g tablet, but with MAX WIFI. GPS would be nice, I use Maps and Navigation a lot, but is not REALLY necessary, as long as I can use a wifi location, Maps should work fine. Since my device is plugged in most of the time, I don't need power-saving features, and I'm pretty sure that THEY are why my device is constantly "disabling" my wifi network (wifi shows as available, 2 bars (-60 or -70 dBm, never seen more than -76) BUT labelled "Disabled, secured with wpa/wpa2 psk. KNOWN issue with GB, I'm pretty sure.) If I click connect, it works FINE. while I'm using it. but after about 10 mins, it's disabled again. Googling this problem has led me to the belief that it is the unwanted power-saving features that are doing this. I should say that I have a KILLER battery my brother gave me, at present I can go 3 days without a charge, and that's with music playing 24/7 over a bluetooth connection, max brightness, AND using wifi/tethering as much as I can. So battery life is not a problem.
I do NOT have access to the SOURCES for my rom. I emailed Huawei and asked for them, and was given a link to the stock firmware, which is in some kinda strange format (it's an .app file, and I can't open/edit it, merely install it. If I could unpackage it, I MIGHT be able to use IT as a source, but I doubt it.)
I can do the work, it's surprisingly easy. I am currently running a kernel that I compiled, but this is beyond me. I have a Linux partition runnin 14.04 LTS. What I need from you:
what programs to use? where to get them? Instructions on HOW to USE them written for somebody who knows JACK about Linux. I ca ./run_a_Program, and have SOME knowledge about repos/sources and compiling/cross-compiling.
and the BIG part is: WTF do I remove/change to accomplish this? PLEASE, if you are replying, remember that I'm an idiot about this stuff, so K.I.S.S.
I have read ALL of the "noob-friendly" guides available here, and they all have one fatal flaw for me: they tell you HOW to do stuff, but not WHAT to do. They setup a build environment, and say have fun. WTF? IDK what im doing, here. What does Demilitarized_zone_free_space=2048 mean? what does changing it affect? how do I change anything, given that IDK What any of this MEANS? Think of it like this: I grew up racing hotrods, know EVERYTHING about them. Now I'm trying to work on an electric-only car. A LOT of my knowledge is useless, but I HAVE already managed to mod a buncha stuff, so I have SOME learning.
I don't REALLY wanna spend YEARS learning Linux, just to tweak my phone. I know I'm gonna have to USE it to do what I want, that's fine. where to start?
And if there is some SIMPLER WAY to do this, I'd LOVE to hear it. I ran across an apk one time here on XDA, that solved the wifi issue, but I cannot find it now.
Hi!
I can understand your frustration. Have you tried asking in the guide threads that you've referred to? Seems the best place to ask questions to me.
Have you seen this guide?
> Android Development and Hacking > Android General > [GUIDE] How to port Stock/GB/CM7/CM9/ICS/CM10/JB Based ROMs [Update: Sept.25.2012
It's an old thread, but still some recent activity in it. Or ask in any of the other threads you spoke about reading.
You could ask for help here as well,
> Android Development and Hacking > Miscellaneous Android Development
Hopefully you can find help in one of these places!
Good luck!
