[Q] ics rom upgrade infuse 4g help - General Questions and Answers

So Im a new member to the site for the most part (have been reviewing threads for more than a year now, though) and decided to finally sign up while trying to flash CM9 ICS on my infuse. Im running into issues. I currently am running ZUES Build 6, with the ICS theme / framework. I LOVED CM7 for the Ascend, so decided to give it (CM) a try on my infuse. The Dev threads say that i should have no issues b/c Im flashing from a UCBL3 / GB ROM, but when i try to just flash it, its an invalid package...? I tried flashing over the ICS recovery from both Hiemdall and Odin but hiemdall needs a "valid tar.gz" and i also encountered the same type of issues with Odin. Ive used Odin before to flash to stock, but im a complete noob to Hiemdall. Any help from an experienced Dev or another flashoholic is greatly appreciated! dont have 10 posts to ask in the Dev section yet...

Could you be trying to flash a .zip file that is designed to be flashed in CWM recovery via Heimdall or Odin? I don't have an Infuse but I'm currently running AOKP on my Galaxy SII and the files posted by in that development thread are CWM flashable.

ive tried in all 3...cwm says
"Cant open /sdcard/update-cm-9.0.0-RCO-infused4g-04152012-UNOFFICIAL-signed.zip
(bad)
installation aborted"
I figured it was a bad DL...tried 2 other DLs, no luck
they said to flash from gb to flash a file called ICSRecovery.tar.... how would i go about doing this...i have red cwm like needed. im completely lost here...And thanks for replying.
edit: here are the pages, and is your rom ICS

I does sound like a bad download, redownloading would have been my first instinct as well.
Rereading your post, it seems like maybe you haven't been able to successfully flash the ICSRecovery.tar that jt1134 mentioned in the first link you posted. Entropy512 doesn't mention needing to flash that recovery before the .zip but it may be implied, I haven't read nearly enough of the pertinent threads. You should be able to flash the .tar using Mobile Odin.
It looks like you pulled the download from Entropy's thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601844
Entropy left some pretty detailed instructions that should be easy enough to follow after you've overcome this initial hurdle.

so you suppose i install mobile odin...will try, and will keep progress updates
update:mobile odin not available for my device...must dump... :/ 30 minutes...............
Update: i was able to flash the recovery image for ICS through sgs kernal flasher, reboot, and get rainbow recovery. it WAS a bad DL, the ICS recovery couldnt flash it...but when i tried to reboot normal, i got into what i call IRONY!!! i was stuck in a recovery loop ( you see the irony in that, right?). reboot put me back in recovery again every time i clicked the option...i was able to get out of the recovery loop by flashing the zues 6 rom (because the ICS couldnt read the boot image of my backup) then from there i rebooted and got the voodoo recovery (huge relief). I was then able to restore my backup (after practically drenching myself in sweat)! I will be uploading an image of the rainbow recovery, as its been dubbed, for those who would like to see what a pain in the ass it is.........

[Q] Problem flashing AtomicFusion v1.3

I'm a new XDA forum member, but I've flashed about 5 ROMS, so I have some knowledge of what I am doing.
But I am having a ton of trouble installing the AtomicFusion v1.3 ROM. I started from the stock ROM, rooted it and flashed CWM on it. After that, I tried flashing AtomicFusion via CWM as the instructions on their XDA thread said. It said it installed successfully, yet now I'm stuck in a bootloop.
If somebody could direct me to a simple, comprehensive set of download instructions for this mod, or simply put them as a reply here, it would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and its really starting to get on my nerves that I can' seem to find the solution to my problem.
PHONE: Samsung Captivate i897
Carrier: AT&T
Have you tried flashing the gingerbread bootloaders via odin 1.3? If you are stuck in a bootloop, flash back to stock 2.1. From there, flash 2.3 via odin and a CWM compatible kernel. And then of course place the atomic fusion 1.3 rom on your sd card and flash via CWM as usual. Good luck and I hope this helps.

[Q][HELP]: captivate stuck at boot after clockworkmod install

Hi all, hope you can help. I installed clockworkmod recovery onto my wife's captivate, and now it won't boot - it's stuck at the "galaxy-S" screen.....I can get it into the YELLOW TRIANGLE screen and once managed to get it into the clockworkmod menu screen.
I believe the phone has android 2.3, not 2.2 on it and this might have been my mistake. The entry point into the kernel is likely different...
how can i fix this? do i need to remove clockworkmod and go back to the stock bootloader? The phone is not rooted, yet (that was the next step).
I haven't been able to find anything in the forums about people that have done (the stupid thing that I did) and installed clockworkmod on a 2.3 phone.
Thanks.
How exactly did you flash cwm? You shouldn't even be able to cause if 3e recovery signature verification?
If you can get to the yellow android screen, that's download mode. You're actually in a good place right now.
To fix where you are, take a look at the development section - there's a post about One-click stock packages. If you're sure she was on Gingerbread, grab one of the non-bootloader Gingerbread stock packages and flash that from download mode.
If you're not sure, I would suggest grabbing one of the Gingerbread stock packages with bootloaders (just to make sure).
In either case, see if you can find a one-click package with ClockworkMod Recovery baked into the kernel (it should say on the post which ones have it). That way you can flash what you want right out of the gate.
thanks. i am quite sure it has gingerbread. the person i bought it from said they did a kies update to 2.3.
i was following the instructions from the cyanogenmod wiki for the captivate: hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
after it finished installing the "clockworkmod recovery" i got into this bind. are those instructions for froyo only?
If you followed the instructions about flashing the speedmod kernel, that's where it's hanging. You've got a froyo kernel with a GB rom. Not a big deal, but Android isn't happy about it. Flash a stock GB package, or find a GB kernel with CWM (like boog's) and flash that and you should be ok.
thanks. do i do this using ODIN or heimdall? I installed CWM using heimdall, and in my frantic reading i thought i saw something about installing stock bootloader/rom packages with ODIN after installing CWM could brick it? Or did I misread that?

Using heimdall is fine (it's also my personal preference between the two, but either will work).
With where you're at, you really shouldn't need to flash any bootloaders. That's pretty much the only area where there is a real risk of hard bricking the phone.
Since Heimdall worked for you once, I'd suggest grabbing the Heimdall one-click I made that's in my signature. You don't need to open it in Heimdall - just download, double-click it, and let it get ready to run. Then connect the phone in download mode and click "flash". You'll have the stock GB rom, with Boog's kernel and CWM all ready to go. You can then flash CM7 from recovery there (you'll probably have to flash it twice, though).
On a side note - flashing stock will wipe your apps. I'm assuming you backed everything up before this. If not, you might need to try and just flash a kernel first, do your backups, then go from there.
(Should you want to do that, go here, grab the one from the "Here is the odin flashable version flash it first if your on stock: Link Mirror" set of links, and then flash that in Heimdall.)
wow, thanks guys, i can breathe easier now. jmtheiss, i got it reflashed to UCKH3 using your one-click package (though now it is AT&T rather than rogers, but i really don't care as long as it works!).
does the one-click root application work with 2.3.4? or is there a more-preferred way to root it now?
Again, thanks so much for the assistance people!
In theory, you should already be rooted (I believe boog's kernel, which was in my one-click, is rooted). If not, go to the bottom of boog's 1st post, and grab the KH3 zip file. Flash that in CWM, and you'll have root permissions.
Or, if you're flashing to CM7, you can just do it from recovery as you are right now. I know from personal experience it works.
thanks everyone. it all worked, and all is good. wife is not an angrybird anymore

Glad to hear that she's not flying over your house shooting explosive eggs. Always a turn for the better.
Had the same problem once before, odin fixed it aswell

Twrp boot loop

This happened before but I can't remember how I fixed it.
1. Flashed TWRP (over codename if that helps)
2. it bootlooped back to recovery instead of starting the system
3. tried flashing another rom/ didn't work
4. finished season 2 of the walking dead
5. reflashed TWRP didn't help (TWRP flashing failed even tho it was the same file I used to get TWRP in the first place)
6. Took the battery out but that didn't help either
I really don't want to odin or use one click any ideas??

Meh, lets start with the first two...
To stop the reboot to recovery, you must flash eollie's oneclick with bootloaders (so flash it twice, second time flash bootloaders) and go back to mtd.

TWRP Major Boot Loop
hey guys, im new here and i desperately need help with my phone!
the other day i was flashing a rom on my samsung galaxy s 4g. Things were turning out fine, until i had some complications on my phone.. so, i removed the rom. when i rebooted my phone, it went directly into the team win recovery project boot loop and every time i try to reboot my phone, it goes into the twrp. I also can't wipe anything and i can't delete anything! Does anybody know how I can solve this or is my phone basically bricked
more details would be helpful..
As in what rom, or what kernel.... etc... and make sure you have the corret phone.
Same problem with t959p
Looks like I'm not alone.......here's my story
the other day I wanted to switch from a stock rom to a custom, so I flashed redux 1.3 which was actually a froyo rom, and it started draining my batt like crazy so I flashed another rom on top of the froyo rom not realizing what I was doing and somehow messed it up cuz now it will only boot into recovery.
Now just to be clear I know this was my fault, I know I should have odin'd back to stock first, but I wasn't thinking at the time.....Ohh and just so you know I've flashed this sucker hundreds of times and was always able to get out of any mess I got in.
So here is the situation as it stands now, 3 button combo to enter download does not work. I can only get it into download with the jig I made. the problem is even in download mode none of my pc's will detect the device as a Samsung composite device, so odin will not see it. I've installed every possible 32 n 64 bit driver I could find including reinstalling kies. Kies wont even see it. I've tried flashing a few roms that I know worked and still it just boots into recovery. Now one thing I'll tell you is that depending on which rom I flash I can get recovery to switch from cwm to twrp. right now I left it with cwm 6.x.
what I need is a cwm flashable stock telus t959p rom complete with bootloaders or at the very least a cwm flashable zip file containing the bootloaders to see if I can recover the phone.
ohh and if your thinking about telling me to google search for the answer then don't bother.......I've spent the last 4 days reading posts and going to different websites and repositories trying to find something that would help me and so far nothing has.
the only thing that might work as a last resort is pushing the bootloaders as per one of raver's or whitehawks posts but it's a little more complicated for me as I would have to set up a laptop with Linux as I don't think i'll be able to pull it off with any of my windows pc's, win7 and win 8 only.
so if anyone has the files I need or can make them please let me know....or if you think you have another solution I could try i'm all ears err eyes.
thanks

Have you tried heimdall one-clicks? Maybe it's showing up as gadget or something like that. I've had luck using zadig and heimdall to bring it back from the brink of death.

EDIT
Woops replied to the wrong thread .
Nothing to see here, move along
Would like to revive a slightly dead thread.
I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 and no longer use my SGS4G for daily use. I had AOKP and disliked it, FC's and didn't like the feel. I have been trying to install a new rom ( old rom, VH Black Ed. ). Every time It loads into TWRP I have the ability to select the zip, install, it says complete, but reboots right back to TWRP menu. I've tried flashing CWM and it will install, flash the rom, reboot, and right back to this TWRP B.S... what am I doing wrong? I want to continue to use this SGS4g for music and internet duties.
How can I install CWM and have it stay even after a reboot? This TWRP is starting to me off
Did you happen to one click to stock before you went ham at the recovery?

Don't think you can flash those files, but you should be able to go back to stock.

Follow these instructions. I would use the zip that takes you back to stock with root.
Keep one thing in mind.....you CANNOT go from Froyo to JB.

Lack of reading/research caused your error :/
Anyways go back to stock with heimdall.or Odin, get red cwm again and you should be able to restore your backups
If you want to go to jb in the future....then you must first follow go to ics, then jb...you have to have ics before you can flash gb

thanks again to all the comments, yes this was a big Noob mistake, i guess i was just way to excited to jump on the JB wagon. i have since returned to stock froyo using one of the kernals from this site (Stock_Root-Mod3e-UCKD5_Odin), so this is what i have now... although a little phased i still want to give this a second attemp. the rom i wanted to flash was [ROM][JellyBean] CNA 3.5.0 / Nightly 9/20 for Samsung Infuse [PORT]....
just to get things straight so i don't mess up again, i have to flash froyo with ics (is there a specific ics version i should get? on a how to guide on flashing jb i found this info: Entropy512's CM9 Kernel / Blue CWM Recovery 2012.05.02-ODIN-Entropy-CM9-zImage.rar) can i use this one, i prefer odin b/c i've never used heimdall. then after i flash ics then i can flash to jb.... but reading some threads i saw that....
"Currently on stock Froyo:
1) Use Heimdall or Odin to flash stock UCLB3 (GB)
*Reccomendation: Also flash GB bootloaders. See first post for links and warnings.*
2) Flash Entropy's DD kernel to obtain root and red CWM recovery.
Currently on stock GB:
1) Flash Entropy's DD kernel to obtain root and red CWM recovery."
do i have to do this step or can i go forward with the current Stock_Root-Mod3e-UCKD5_Odin that i now have installed....?
secondly, after i install ics, right before i flash jb it states i have to do an aroma prep....then flash jb.....
all flashes are done with clockworkmod and i wipe only cache and dalvik? or is there anything else i have to wipe?
sorry for all the questions, i have read and researched many threads but they are all pretty overwhelmingly full of lots of info.....just wanna get it in order....
thanks again
from froyo to ics i use odin, from odin to jb i use cwm, correct?

Follow all steps, don't skip a thing. As for wiping, wipe Cache, Data, Dalvik, and format /System when going from GB to ICS and ICS to JB. That UCLB3 file is Gingerbread stock and you have to go to gingerbread before you go to ICS.
Also, if you are confident that your phone won't get disconnected from Odin while flashing the UCLB3 file, flash the GB bootloaders while you're at it. If the flash fails while flashing bootloaders then your device is bricked so be sure about Odin before you flash them.

Since you have already used Odin, I would use option "C". The best thing you can do is read everything two or three times. There are also many vids on YouTube that are helpful.
Once you are on GB.....just pick out any ICS ROM an flash it. Once it installs, I wouldn't even bother sitting it up and then you can go to JB.
Th3Bill uses an Aroma installer in his ROMs and the first time you use it, you will have to flash his aroma-prep first.
Hang in there....go slowly...and read. This gets easier and easier the more you do it. I always just d/l the zips to my phone and never even have to mess with the PC.

Edit: All of his ROMs for the Infuse can be found and d/l at Jokersax.com
Edit: I just reread your post......once you are on GB, you won't use Odin again. You will use whatever ICS zip to flash your ROM using CWM. Same thing with JB.

okay i think i understand....never has my phone disconnected during a flash with odin, ive always gotten a straight pass...exactly how important are the bootloaders anyways? if failures happen b/c of faulty usb cords, then im good...if bricking happens b/c of "unlucky chance" then id rather avoid it.... either way ill start the whole process tonight after i put the kiddos away so i can concentrate 100%.
thanks again for the tips

so far so good, it seems i need to do the gb bootloader after all...got the rainbow screen....i have my gbbootloader file ready to go....only thing is i want to confirm where i put the file, i've searched and i can only find a procedure for heimdall not odin...do i put the md5 file in PDA or bootloaders?? also it says in heimdall to tick bootloaders, do i do the same in odin??? it also says to flash twice....?? ok im really not risking a hard brick, i'll be patient and wait

btw, am i supposed to flash ics twice?? that's what the [GUIDE] How To Flash JB says,
"9. Flash ICS Rom, then ICS Gapps"
but when i tried to flash ics a second time i couldn't (because of rainbow screen, and because it didn't show up in my directory....and where does ICS Gapps show up?
thanks again
If you downloaded the bootloaders linked in the guide, then yes, they go on the pda slot. You only have to flash once.
Heimdall-one click is the one you must flash once before it allows you to flash the bootloaders too.
Edit: to fully install ics you must flash twice, because I believe that what it does when coming from GB is that it just flashes the ics kernel on the first flash, requiring you to run it a second time after rebooting for it to install the complete rom.
Ics gapps are often linked in the rom OPs, although you don't need to flash them if you are headed to JB.

Shawn what I meant is that heimdall one-click wont allow you to flash bootloaders the 1st time, so you must run it once and then a 2nd time but with "flash bootloaders" ticked on.
There's no need to use heimdall before flashing them with Odin.

When I scan for available network operators I get two options one says :NICMS and the other is just a number 71021... any ideas?
Also, when installing jb in the initial setup it asked which would be the defualt location to save I think I chose the sdcard instead of the emmc directory. ..can I change that setting?
I'm pretty sure you can change the setting, but not sure how. Also, your APNs might be messed up. There's a thread with working APNs. One sec and I'll link it.

[Q] Rogers Infuse 4G (i997r) help upgrading to kitkat

I have a Rogers Infuse 4G (i997r) and I have been trying to upgrade it to kitkat by using a unofficial Cyanogenmod rom. More recently have been trying to use Carbon rom to update it. I have been running into problem after problem, error after error and I have finally decided to post something on XDA in hopes that someone with more experience can help me out. More information about the errors and what I have done to the phone below.
About a year ago I got this Rogers infuse 4G from a friend. I messed around with it for a bit but what I really wanted to do with it was install a custom rom and update it to a more recent version of Android (It started out on gingerbread (2.3)).
I had a real hard time getting modified recovery 3e because there was not original recovery file in system>bin to replace.
I forget most of what happened but it ended with me using a application to convert the cwm recovery zip to a md5 because I couldn't get modified 3e to work.
I tried using odin to flash the files I made but odin got stuck (or was just taking forever) and I unplugged my Infuse.
The infuse was bricked and would only show "firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again". The phone would'nt enter recovery or download mode. It was recognized by odin but seemed as if it was not responding.
About 3 days ago I finally decided to try to unbrick the phone again (I don't know why just felt like it) and I found GTG ultimate unbrick with a pit file. I tried uploading this using odin and the phone responded and downloaded the files.
The phone showed a AT&T splash screen and then the Samsung logo. It hanged at the Samsung logo for about 3 minutes then would turn off reboot, show the AT&T splash screen then the hang at the Samsung logo for 3 minutes again.
I decided that I didn't actually need to install working android because I just needed CWM Recovery and found a CWM Recovery that was flashable with odin.
Now that the phone would actually show a splash screen I could access download mode and the stock 3E recovery.
I went to download mode and flashed CWM Recovery 6 - Voodoo Lagfix with odin
In the CWM Recovery I clicked install update.zip
The phone said installing and when it finished it rebooted.
It showed the AT&T logo and then the Samsung screen then it started talking (which btw scared the **** out of me) and it said installing voodoo lagfix, estimated time remaining 2 minutes
After it was done installing it rebooted and I had the same problem as before. It would show the AT&T logo then hang at the Samsung screen for 3 minutes.
I reflashed the GTG unbrick with odin then I reflashed the CWM Recovery and I was back into the recovery. (It wouldn't just let me boot into it I had to reflash it which was weird)
This time instead of clicking install update.zip I installed the Cyanogenmod-11-infuse-4g-unofficial-2014(some build number).zip
I got (status 7) installation aborted.
when the phone rebooted it showed a cyanogen mod loading screen and I got really excited
after the loading screen it went straight to proper CWM Recovery then it instantly crashed with a little fallen over Android and a red triangle over it.
It kept boot looping like this so I asked for the unbrick files for a Rogers Infuse 4G and installed those.
Once I installed the Rogers Infuse 4G Rom I set it up but I ran into the same problem I had last time.
I can't install the modified 3E recovery because the recovery file is not system>bin. CWM Recovery also fails to install even though it says it has installed.
It turns out the recovery file is on the root of my phone not /system/bin
Im not really sure what to do and guidance would be appreciated.
It's because the CWM is not only device specific, but carrier specific (at least for the Infuse).
Flash the following file (extracted) with Odin. It will talk to you as well after reboot, but it will give you CWM red which you can use to move on to custom ROMs:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/t0kc92124jat6yt/CWM Infused Kernel.zip?dl=0
Be sure to disable Voodoo Lagfix before installing any ROM's, especially if shortcut'ing directly to CarbonROM (versus installing CM9, then CM10.1 and finally a KitKat ROM).
Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks so much for both the Rogers stock rom and the help today. I left out one crucial piece of information earlier by mistake. I tried installing both cyanogenmod and carbon rom earlier using the voodoo fix version of CWM Recovery and I got another status 7 installation aborted. I deleted the assert part of the update-script. My problem now is I get status 6 installation aborted and I haven't been able to find a quick fix for it. I just tried again using the red version of CWM Recovery you gave me and I still get the same error

Just to be clear. With the original ROM file, did you try installing the ROM with this CWM and Voodoo Lagfix disabled? That is go into CWM's options menu, and disable there?
Just trying to pick the low hanging fruit, unfortunately I don't know where to go from there (as this is my only idea now, besides re-downloading the ROM).
I have no problem reflashing the roms are anything. I have a iPhone 5S (hoping to get a S5 or S6 in 2015 once my contract expires ) so I have no important files or anything on this phone. (In fact I just reflashed that rogers rom yesterday from a blank slate) I noticed you have (had?) a Infuse 4G running Carbon 4.4.4 and honestly that's all I want to get to. If you want me to reflash roms or files I have no problem doing so. I just would like my infuse to run Carbon 4.4.4.

It used to be that in order to get from Gingerbread to say, Jellybean, you needed to install the Ice Cream Sandwich ROM (CM9) first. This gives you a relatively new CWM in order to do your bidding. But you man need to install a Jellybean ROM (I suggest CM10.1) in order to get a CWM that will like the installation of KitKat.
So Stock (Infused CWM) -> CM9 -> CM10.1 -> CarbonROM 4.4.4
Of course, I did say used to. Apparently if you disable Voodoo lagfix in CWM you can go straight to CarbonROM. I never tried it, but it is worth a shot (avoids having to go on a scavenger hunt).
But if you already tried it with no success, now you know the classical way.
Thanks a lot. By upgrading to cm9 then cm10 then finally Carbon Rom I was able to get the phone to kitkat!
Cheers
