[Q] Titanium Backup to Different Device - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like the title says.
Is it possible?
Say I'm playing Angry birds or some other game. I back it up with TB, and then I move the backed up files to another android phone or tablet perhaps, can I restore it / will it work?

Most likely, and i'd place it on a case-by-case (or app-by-app) basis. One way to find out, and obviously you'd have to be rooted (and thus have proper backup procedures in place if something were to go wrong).

Its worked for me...
I went from Hero to Nexus S 4G and it all followed through well....games and its levels, etc.
But like the other dude said.. its no a case to case basis.

[Q] Recovering data after root?

I'm about to root my new NS and every guide I see reminds me that the internal storage ("SD card") will be wiped - I'm cool with that. But since I'm unrooted I can't use Titanium yet to back up my apps.
So my question is - once I root, what's the best way to get everything back without manually doing everything all over again?

I see a lot of people say appbrain lets them easily reinstall all their apps after a wipe. Apps, but not app data.
Not sure how that works, i haven't tried it myself. edit: little google search revealed this on how to do it:
Without root, there's no way you're going to save your data that's on the internal storage space.

Yeah I just read some more about it - apparently it's just not at all possible yet, or ever.
Oh well better get to rooting before I have TOO much to lose.

Yeah, that's why I'm an early rooter on all my phones.
App developer's should be encouraged (or allowed by Google) to put their app data into someplace that the user can back up.
I wonder if the reason app data is put in a root-only read place of the device by default is part of the sand-boxing security.
Best backup before root
The only thing I really had to hunt for was to backup Angry Birds. Thankfully there's an app called Angry Cheaters that is both free and gives you save files for Angry Birds.
I just went through this process yesterday. Google actually saves most/all of your apps and will reinstall when you reenter you gmail address. It also restored my wifi passwords (in addition to obvious things like email/contacts). Just be careful if you have to wipe multiple times while exploring root that you let this process do its thing, it forgot a few apps that way. Thankfully appbrain had moved all of my previous apps to another list.
The only other thing I couldn't back up was some auto mileage data, so I just wrote that into notepad and called it a day.
Is there anything else you are specifically trying to get? I was really only focused on Angry Birds.
Hmmm here is a question/thought
If unlocking your bootloader whipes everything clean, would it be a possibility to run data harvesting apps on the device to get w.e data you lost back?
both on the "sd" and /data/data
I use an app called "rsync backup" ... it can generate a DSS key to install on your server of choice, and tell it to back up /mnt/sdcard/ ... the only thing it won't access on the USB Storage area is a folder called ".android_secure" ... but everything else copies just fine.
I routinely sync my phone with this app to my workstation at the office, and a system at home.
haha.. this is why i unlocked the bootloader/rooted my s right away, i didnt have any data to back up. makes it painless

Angry Birds

I have just gotten my girlfriend's G2X today... rooted it immediately, installed Titanium Backup, and tried to restore my Angry Birds backups (from G2) to her new G2X. This failed -- apps wouldn't open.
After some trouble, I was finally able to get the apps to install from the Market, but attempts to restore my data backups crash the apps.
She really likes Angry Birds, and has been playing it a lot on my phone, so I'd really like to restore it to her phone...
Has anyone else run into a similar problem? If so, did you find a fix? Does Angry Birds write to a partition that isn't available on the G2X? I'm a bit lost as to what the issue may be.
No other problems have been noted thus far. The N64 emulator runs great on the G2X... I was having some fun with GoldenEye 007!
No idea. I was able to successfully backup my Angry Birds levels via Titanium from my Nexus One and restore them to my Nook Color.
Maybe you could try drilling down to the individual files. Using Root Explorer I see that we have /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files. All the info about the levels you completed is in highscores.lua. There is additional information in settings.lua which appears to include Golden Eggs and other stuff.
It's conceivably possible that your crashes are coming from the file stored in /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/lib which may be device-specific. E.g. if you install Angry Birds on a dual-core device versus single-core, it loads up different hardware-related libraries.
So yeah, try copying the .lua files from your saved games to a safe place, and then reinstall AB from scratch. Play a level, make sure it works, then replace the .lua files with your backups.
Buy an app from the market that backs up the file or do it the free way and use adb to pull the file from data data angry birds somewhere.look around.google it tells you which file is the back up

dont tell her you did this, but this will make her happy.
download angry cheaters, you can set the the high scores and level completion for Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons. Go through and match all her scores from the G2.
Problem solved.

this is possible. but it requires the data the game is possible. ive accidentally wiped my phone SO many times that make-shift app backups have become a specialty.
find the folder (can't rememver which it is) stored on internal/external memory on the original device. Remember when you had to go through that download at the beginning of the app? copy that to the same place of your new device, and load the game. its not perfect and it hasnt always worked for me, but there are other times where ive gotten ALL my golden balls, but no items, or vice versa.
its worth a shot.
Is anyone else unable to install any version of angry birds without their phone rebooting?
EDIT: I found out that my problem was when installing them from titanium backups from my N1

Not sure where these problems are coming from; I used TB to backup my apps from the Eris, and all of them including angry birds ported over just fine, including the save data.

I had my apps installed on my sdcard from my nexus one so when I restored them they went to the external card that the g2x isn't able to store Apps on. I was able to delete the files and only then install them.

For some reason my apps and data from my G2 would not restore on my G2X. I used titanium and mybackup on the G2 to create backups. But my G2X would not read the backup files. Probably incompatibility issue?

This is what pissed me off. I haven't been able to get it to restore properly. I've tried taking the individual files, and haven't had any success. I could flash three times a day with my mt4g, and never lose anything. I was ranked around 900 something the last I checked.
I spent about a day and a half trying to restore the Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons data from the Titanium BackUps off my Nexus One. I gave up.
I went back to my Nexus One and used MyBackup Pro to back everything up and, after getting the same results as when I used Titanium for a couple hours, it finally worked. The problem is, I have no clue what I did different or why it finally worked.
There seems to be some magic number or some magic combination of downloading the app, opening the app, restoring the data and restarting the phone. I do know that I could not use any of the backed up APKs from MyBackup Pro or the phone crash/rebooted. I had to download the app from the market and then only restore the data from MyBackup pro...and again, it didn't work the first time. Lots of uninstalling the data and app and starting from scratch. Download. Restore. Reboot. Rinse. Repeat.
So it is possible...but I'm sorry I don't know exactly how.
I previously had a vibrant and I got mine back no problem. I installed each version fresh from the market/amazon app store then used titanium to restore 'data only'. Worked like a champ on all 3 versions.
restore of Angry Birds
I had the same issue - so I did the following
1) Install Angry birds from market
2) Install Angry Birds Rio from Market
3) Install Angry birds Seasons from Market
4) Launch each game and complete the first level
5) For Seasons, complete the first level in each season
6) launch Titanium and do a restore of just user data not the application
This prserved all my golden egss and settings - good luck
Solution
Here is a solution to restore high scores to a fresh install of Angry Birds. Unzip your Angry Birds backup from TitaniumBackup/com.rovio.angrybirds-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxx.tar
You need two files in this archive, settings.lua and highscores.lua. They are located in /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files/
Put those file on your phone in the same directory, /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files/
You can do this using root explorer to copy/paste the files there, or simply by using adb to push the files using the commands:
adb push settings.lua /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files/
adb push highscores.lua /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files/
The above commands assume that you have adb in your path and are in the current directory containing your .lua backup files.
If you have not yet played Angry Birds on your new phone this method will result in a permission denied error. Simply play one level of angry birds and repeat the above solution.

[Q] Application sync across devices

So I believe this is the right place to post this.
I'm looking for an app that can save/sync games across devices. I lost my one phone and I had purchased some credits to support the game and when I lost is I lost all of the credits and I am playing a long RPG but there are times when I wish I could play it on my tablet instead of on my phone, but i dont want to play through it twice at the same time.
Does anyone know if there is an app that will allow me to back up and sync my application information across devices using something like drop box?
Titanium Backup does exactly that.
how does one do that, I'm trying to get a copy of spectral souls from my transformer over to my nexus S 4g, so i can be slightly more mobile and play?
I'm sure there is a more elegant way, but what I did to transfer my Battleheart save game to the phone was copy the TB properties and tar files for Battleheart from my Tab to my phone, then rename them so the filenames matched the phone app data filenames and replaced the phone's ones with them. I did this because both devices are currently in use, obviously between new devices you can just use TB like normal to restore the apps+data. Wouldn't be something I'd like to do a lot, I'm sure there must be a more elegant solution (probably TB does it natively and I just didn't see it...).

[Q] Switch to Skyrocket from GS2?

Now that people have had the device for a few days, I was hoping their to headstart could help potential switchers and as the SR doesn't have it's own forum yet so I'm asking here.
Newbie alert!!!!
I am wondering how easy it will be to move from the Gs2 to the skyrocket? Basically any recommended ways of moving my apps, texts, pictures, etc to the SdCARD and back from the SdCard to the new phone? Contacts are synced with Google Contacts so no problems there, my main concern is with paid apps, I'd rather not pay for them again.
Can I back up apps via TiBU and restore them on the Skyrocket? Or can I just reinstall them on the new phone?
End of Newbie question!!!!
Paid apps are in your google account as well, you will be able to reinstall all your paid apps through the market (without repaying) by just signing in to your same google account.
The only thing you need to backup is your pictures/music.
Here's what I did to migrate to my Skyrocket from my Captivate:
*Duh Alert* Have your original phone rooted and Titanium Pro installed.
Original Phone
1. Backup APK & Data with Titanium.
2. Locate where backup directory is on your phone. Mine was \sdcard\TitaniumBackup
3. Mount original phone and copy backup directory to your computer.
New Hotness
1. Root that bad boy. Search the site, its here.
2. Install Titanium Pro from market.
3. Back up 1 app, pick something silly. That will create the backup directory.
4. Mount the new hotness and copy your saved directory from your computer to the Skyrocket.
5. Restore apps. I did one at a time cuz I didn't want everything installed on the new phone.
95% of the apps and data restored properly.
Simplistic, yes....but it works. Go forth and multiply.
If you want the smoothest experience on your Skyrocket, do NOT use a backup tool to bring over apps, just reinstall them from the Market.
Copying apps and app date with a tool like Titanium does and WILL cause some issues.

To partially agree with you I tried using MyBackUp Pro and almost everything failed. That's what I deserve for buying that one first back in the day. BUT....Titanium worked great. All of my paid apps were as good as gold.
Plus, if you want your saved data, wouldn't you have to use a backup tool?

If your just trying to backup like game saves then sometimes. A lot of times that data can be backed up by just mounting your sdcard to your computer and copying the files. Some games do save the data in funny locations so you do need (easier) to use something like Titanium, but you are always better off starting from as scratch as possible to avoid issues later.
Moving an app to save you from entering your login info for example, is just a bad idea. Most apps have no real data to backup, simple 2 second settings etc....

i have found that most issues with TiBu are do to you trying to restore System Information......i used tibu to restore my apps on the Skyrockert. i just picked APPS only with out system data.
worked fine i have not seen a hickup on any device or install after a flash of new Rom.

TiBu works great, usually, for restoring NON-System apps and their data.
Avoid restoring system apps/data.
Also, if you do happen to run into a problem with a particular restored app, all you need to do is uninstall/reinstall it and then use TiBu to restore the "data only" for that app.
This has always worked for me.
y?
Its basically the same phone, screen tiny bit bigger and it edges r round, and the. 3 faster CPU is not noticeable, and if u don't live in the handful of citys that have lte network what's the point by the time LTE gets fully activated skyrocket will be old phone something way better out, now if u didn't have the gs2 already if say hell ya but since u do wasted money IMO

New Phone - Backing up Subway surfers

I have a high score in Subway Surfers, I've also played counless hours, so I've wracked up a lot of coins and unlocked a lot of items. I have the galaxy note 2 for tmobile and it broke. It doesnt charge any more and they are sending me a new phone. I want to back up my data so i don't lose all my progress in subway surfers.
I was looking at the hack and how it has you replace the files in the com.kiloo.subwaysurf folder with modified text files to give unlimited coins etc... I tried copying my 3 data files to the ext sdcard so I could put them on my new phone, but when I looked at the files in a text editor, they were out of date and contained 1 month on scores, etc. So i figured they weren't being used in the operation of the game. I deleted the 3 data files in that folder, turned the game on, and sure enough, deleting those files had no affect. I tried replacing them with the hacked files people are using to cheat, and sure enough, nothing happened. So if the 3 files in my com.kiloo.subwaysurf aren't actually being using to store my Subway Surfer data, then where exactly is it being stored so I can back it up?
Please help.
Thanks.
The free version of Titanium Backup can back up an app + data. Did that not work (is the data not being backed up, too ?) ?
When I went to market, it said Titanium Backup Pro free or paid, requires root. I am not rooted.
Ah, if you're already getting a replacement it might be worth it to root to be able to get your data off. You might need root to see the correct files, but maybe someone knows a way for this specific game.

Rooting will cause me to loose my warranty. my phone has already broken after only having it 2 months. It wouldnt make sense for me to lose my warranty over a video game. I'm sure there has to be a way to back up my data without rooting.

would an app like app to zip do the same? i have all my data on another phone and upgraded to the sIII and now my old pphone don't have service of course. but it does have app2zip for some weird reason.
I am having the same problem. I have lots of coins and items in Subway Surfer on my old Samsung Epic 4g. I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon. Both of my phones are not rooted. I am reading up on it and will probably end up rooting my new S4 and would root my Epic if I needed to. I have a further problem in that the micro USB port on my Epic is broken. I have tried Carbon back up but it doesn't seem to be compatible with my Epic. Even if it was It says it requires a PC which I assume I would involve using the micro USB port which is broken.
I figure the backup programs copy files from the old phone to the new phone. I have tried to do this several times myself with no luck. I have found 3 folders to copy they all seem to be named com.kiloo.subwaysurf. The first 2 one on the SD card. One is in Android/Data and one is in .VungleCacheDir. The third is on the phone under /mnt/asec. I copied them all and tried to replace those files in those places on the new phone. The first 2 copied fine. The third was wierd because the /mnt/asec folder on my S4 was empty. I tried to place the com.kiloo.subwaysurf file from my old phone in that folder but my file manager wouldn't let me. I tried doing it with Astro, jumble file manager, and a third file manager and none of them let me. That leads me to believe there is some permission issue. I am assuming rooting would allow me to copy this file but I don't know that even if I did this strategy would work. Does anyone know if it would work or not? If so how do I make it work?
Is there a back up app that would allow me to copy this app and the app data over to my new phone using the SD card or bluetooth? Is there a version of Carbon back up that is compatible? Even if there is can I use it without a working micro USB port?
Does Titanium backup require a working micro USB port? If it does I can try and root my Epic without using the micro usb port which I haven't read enough yet to see if it is possible.
My third option is trying to fix the micro usb port on the Epic. I have kept my epic alive this far by using replacement parts from another Epic. I also used that other epic as a battery charger. The last time I took it apart it looked like of the 8 or so pins connecting the micro USB plug to the motherboard of the phone 2 were broken off. I tried to bend them back down and I thought I had fixed it but I guess not. Any advice on fixing the port would be helpful.

Would mybackuppro work to restore the an app AND that apps data? like the OP (and me) want to do with Subway Surfer? I downloaded the trial version of mybackuppro and it backed up Subway Surfer but it says I need the pro version to restore it on a different device. I don't mind buying the pro version but I would like to know if it would serve my purpose first. I am desperately trying to transfer all of my Subway Surfer winnings onto my new phone. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Carbon back up doesn't seem to be compatible with my old phone (epic 4g) and likely requires a working micro SD port, which my epic lacks.

Subway Surfers restore on Galaxy Note 3 (VzW)
Got my new Verizon Galaxy Note 3. Its not rooted, although I hear a method is now available. I've tried everything under the sun to try and get a restored copy of Subway surfers to work. I have a rooted Motorola Driod Bionic. So Subway surfers is backed up there. I have a rooted Google Nexus 10 tablet, I can use TBpro to restore SS on the nexus device. Ive tried just about every highly rated back/restore app that is free from the marketplace. None of them restore the data. I've tried going and installing older SS apk files, and using my saved userpref, onlinestatus, etc etc. But that doesnt appear to work either.
I've installed hacked apk that gives you everything, and since SS links with FB you can get your Highscore. But whenever a new SS update comes out, you wont get it, because there are no marketplace links.
Anybody have luck using any application/scheme to save/restore SS user/profile data on a non-rooted android device?
Helium worked for me .
I first made a backup of data to my external SD card. I then restored the data from the sd card on the same phone to verify that the process was successful ( cuz once or twice the backups appeared to be successful but there were some errors when I attempted to restore).
I then installed helium on the new phone. Using file explorer go to the carbon folder. in that make a folder com.kiloo.subwaysurf. Then send the backup files from carbon folder of ur old phone to ur new phone.
Next, open helium . restore >restore from external/ internal sd card, select subway surfers and you're done!

Tired this on my nexus 10 tablet. But helium would not even retire what it backed up. My nexus is rooted so I tried backing up with and without root allowed for helium. All restores using helium onto the same device failed. That was my hope. To get a restore that worked. Then using those backednuo files. Didn't work, but wasn't a surprise since it never worked even on the original device.
Just chiming in here. I used titanium pro to back up subway surfers and it did absolutely jack. also logging into facebook only brings me my high score back. nothing else.
You backed up on what device? You restored onto. Rooted Note 3?
Lost my data

Hi jetguat, can you please share the hacked apk. I am unable to download it from the usual links. I lost my data from my previous phone as I assumed that google will save the data for all applications that I have installed. Now I hope to recover more than just my best score. thanks

If the hack includes hacks of in app purchases or coins, then it can be posted onto xda. In fact, it can not even be discussed on xda, as it is considered warez.
Since there are no details of the hack, the discussion can continue, but please do not post or discuss warez.
Thanks!

Hi JustMPM,
I am trying to locate the one where the data for the player stats are retained and can be backedd up without root. A fresh install does not clear them out. No warez are expected.
Thanks
get a computer and this job will be done

Thanks.

Well, so you are using an android phone. My solution should work for you then since it has a SD card (you have it and it isn't broken right?).
So the thing you need to do is that you have to get a memory card reader to read your SD card on the computer. The next step would be to download a data backup software to collect your entire data. The tool you can use are plenties, some example would be EaseUS, recuva etc.
But personally I will suggest you go with easeus since they are offering some discount right now and most of their products are free. So here is the link to todo backup download. Just follow the instructions. After the data backup is done you just copy it to your new phone's memory card and then everything should be all set.
