I find myself confused, since i have a galaxy s2 i9100M, people said that extra M makes no differences and is treated as i9100, but im on contract with bell on CAnada, what happens if i root my phone and change some roms, kernels, etc.
Will it cause any touble with my contract??

Wont cause any problems until you break the phone and send it for repairs because rooting will void your warranty. Contract wise....no, dont worry at all.

Like what Deniska11 said , Rooting voids your warranty . If you want to root , you should be careful and not brick your phone . I root because I want to install customs roms and kernels so that i can overclock my phone to play games that wasn't smooth on my phone last time . So , actually , there's a risk to rooting . It'd be better that if you're happy with what you have now , it's best to not root . C:

Keeping in mind that everything will be ok once we follow the guides and so on, don't root just for the thrill.
Root if you are going to take advantage of it; and before doing it, backup all your stuff.

Really good answer.
Unrooting is as easy as rooting, and you should get your warranty back. I rooted from recovery mode using a simple zip file. Really easy once you know what you are doing. Unrooting is basicly the same.

If the warranty/bricking scares you, I'd simply read a couple of tutorials and experiences. It's not that hard nor scary, but it gives a lot in return
You should root to get extra features and be able to change roms but if you are still under waranty I wouldn't really recomend it so that you won't have any problems during the repair or exhange of your phone

Rooting means you will get access to the internal system files(like an ADMIN of a computer)It will void your warranty
But rooting there are many advantages such as installing roms and kernel Over clocking etc. Some applicatoins like Avast(anti-theft),Titanium backup need root access.
The good thing about galaxy s devices is that they're practically un-brickable, so i wouldn't worry too much about ruining your phone. As far as custom roms and fun little hacks go, I'd say rooting is without any shadow of a doubt worth it. and once you start... you just can't stop
Rooting unlocking boot-loader installing any custom rom will loose your guarantee but it will get the best out off your device
Do it! I have an old HTC Desire and after I rooted it (and did the S-Off, for my phone) I went from the original 2.2 through cyanogenmod 6, 7 and now testing the beta of Ice Cream Sandwich..
rooting your phone will almost surely invalid your warranty but will permit very easy backups/restores (via apps like TitaniumBackup or full nandroid backups via cust recovery) and a pletora of advanced usage like firewall, transparent proxy and so on..
Thanks guys! I already rooted my phone, and it went so far so good, but i feel like custom roms are better than samsung base roms because of the customization but battery life is awful...just what do you recommend me to do?

What Rom are you using? My battery life is actually better with the custom rom I'm running on my i727.
Well i was on hydrogenICS but since battery like on aokp roms are always so bad i switched to wanamlite v11.1 and batery life when lockscreen is off is super dupper cool...like 10 hours for it to drop...but when you are using it to surf web or play a game, battery life drops down as fast as in any aokp based rom... thats why not everyrom is perfect xD

I have a Samsung Galaxy S i9000M(on Bell) from Canada and when I first started messing around with custom roms and rooting I messed my phone up pretty bad(my own fault) I sent it in and they just put the original firmware on it and I got it back at no cost! So ya I wouldn't worry to much.

i have a new stock inspire 4g and i was thinking of rooting not sure yet. i used to have a samsung vibrant which had unknown sources option available thats pretty much all i would root the phone for im not interested in flashing or anything i would just like to use amazon market and some other apps. using a sideloading app would not work beacuse i wouldnt be able to install from amazon. i was reading and wanted to know if it where posible without making a goldcard using attn1 step 2 script (hackerize-ace setup-downgrade which if im not mistaken it will give you temp root until u reboot without having to actually downgrade) just imput in cmd prompt something to enable unknown sources? i dont need the option to be available in applications just want it to be enabled. if this is not possible and my only choice is to root then ive been reading some issues on rooting and wanted to make sure. if i use bubby's method would i loose sound like on attn1's method? im not planning on flashing anything after that so i will not lose hsupa? at the end of the rooting process what will i have the stock rom rooted with all att apps or the downgraded desire rom? and last how do i unroot and/or return to stock after this? again asuming i use bubby's method. thanks for all help in advance and sorry for all these questions i have done some reading on this great forum and wanted to make sure i understood correctly before doing anything

Check out my guide, it has a side loading apps section. You cannot root and s-off with out making a gold card. You can use bubby's GUI but its the same process essentially. If you haven't rooted you don't hsupa anyways, and only "some" people loose hsupa. After you root you will have a stock rooted inspire rom with att bloatware still installed. Also in the guide as well.
I like you didn't really want to root this phone... I had a captivate prior to this and never really bothered installing different roms. Basically just used andromeda.
But seriously, rooting this phone is much easier than it looks. It's just takes a min

thanks. im still a little undecided of rooting or not what would be the benefits? by rooting can i do something to boost the sound? im also worried about the radio and rom being stock with hsupa(by this u mean their 4g or hspa right?) and all is because where i live the only cell company with signal is att and its not that great so i dont want to mess with the little signal i have. plz correct m if im wrong im new at this. thanks for all help in advance

thanks bro i dont know why i used to jailbreak and mess with iphones all the time but for some reason on android this seams a little complicated and i dont want to mess up the phone just after 2 days it is a pretty good phone as is but being restricted to android market its just not right.

You'll need to flash a custom rom/kernel for the volume fix unless there's a Froyo version of something like this floating around somewhere that you'd just be able to sideload.

It's a great phone out-of-the-box, no doubt about it, and there's nothing wrong with waiting a while before rooting.
Learn how the phone behaves normally, make sure there's no manufacturing flaws, etc.
Chances are, though, seeing as you have already identified the limitation of being unable to side-load, you will eventually root.
It's a piece of cake, as long as you have your head clear and follow the process to the letter.

You only need the first page - the rest is just random posts.
Google 'flash a custom ROM on Android' to get more info on the actual flashing procedure but I wouldn't do ANYTHING until you understand what it is you're doing
If you need to ask if you need to flash a certain rom then the answer is NO, you do not need to flash.
There's a learning curve on how to do it, and do it correctly, learning how to go back to stock, and also upkeep of the rom (flashing everytime it's updated)
What's wrong with your phone right now that you want to put a ROM?
Don't feel like you need to put a ROM just because other people are doing it.

I flashed my tmobile to revolution hd the first day I got it. This site is really helpful with all its guides. I did the whole thing in less then 24 hours and before this phone I knew next to nothing about android an s-off etc. If you read the guides properly I dont think its possible for you to screw up.
P.S I use mine in Canada with mobilicity, but I am guessing u r with tmobile.

I'm not having a go but rooting actually isn't needed. The Sensation out the box is a great handset. The ONLY reason I did was to remove the bloat I don't use (including most of HTC's widgets). If HTC were to release a phone that allowed this without root I'd have no reason to - even if I could

Im not going to lie but i did it cause everyone else was doing it and seemed like the thing to do... Since doing that I have actually learned a lot... Its the greatest thing when you can take a phone and COMPLETELY make it your own from the rom that you have on there to the splash screen and the boot and down animation... Knowing its there because thats what YOU want there not what HTC or your carrier wants there is the greatest gift... Its YOURS.

Well I have had a fair amount of experience jailbreaking iphones... I know that its nothing like rooting a droid... I did not root blindly either... I came about doing myself cause I did some research I saw that the evo was being rooted and they said it was the same for the Sensation... I found a really great detailed video in two parts on you tube of how to do this step by step so there was going to be no error... Not only that there are lots of people on craigslist i could have paid to root... I took the chance... well no some a chance but I was certain that I would have no problems with doing this it was a 15 minute or so journey that came out just fine
I wanted to try flashing my Rom because I have read that after flashing with android revolution made their phone faster and battery last longer.

well cant argue against trimming the extra fat which is kinda slowing down the phone. Nothing like a lean mean calling machine.
Without root, you can't get rid of Sense. CM7 is so fast! Add a Faux kernel and see everyone else including the SGSII in the rearview mirror.

if you are serious about rooting i sugest you read the guide several times before you continue. if you have any questions there are many here that will help you. i also like to add that it would be a good idea to check what rom you are using now and download the .ruu for it and keep it in a safe place. i have seen several questions here of someone trying to return their phone back to stock for warranty, exchange, or what ever reason they want to return back to stock but they dont know what rom they had before flashing. so download this ruu first before trying to flash a different rom. it will save you the hastle.

I've had an original Motorola Droid the last 2 years, finally finished my contract and just bought a used Sensation 4G off contract with T-Mobile... allowing me to change phones more often than every 2 years... it felt like prison!
I rooted my Droid, and liked the ways I could customize it and clean off bloatware that I never used. I wanted to free up as much memory as I could because the Droid didn't have a lot to start with.
The Sensation has even more bloatware, and for now, I'm not so much interested in being able to flash a new ROM as I am to just be able to delete the stuff I don't want. So I have some questions...
I used HTC's Bootloader Unlock tool and now the phone is unlocked. It thought that may allow me to delete apps... but no such luck.
Is there another way for me to do this... or is it still necessary to root the phone?
If I do need to root it... what is the easiest way for me to do it?
Should I re-lock my bootloader, or is it OK to leave it unlocked?
With ICS being pushed out to the Sensation in June, how will my unlocked bootloader or rooted status affect that? Or should I just flash an ICS ROM and not deal with the OTA update?
If I were to flash an ICS ROM... which one is the most stable and most highly recommended?
If I were to keep my current stock ROM for now... is it possible to put a 3rd party launcher, like ADW Launcher Pro to replace Sense?

I can answer some of your questions. As far as I know, you will have to root your phone to delete (or freeze) bloatware. What app were you using on your Droid to do this? I think you should leave your bootloader unlocked. I don't even bother with official updates because the custom roms run so well. I am currently running CoinDroid 1.1.0 and it is amazing! It is Android 4.0 and also Sense 4.0. You can always install ADW but it will not replace everything Sense. It will replace the launcher but other parts of Sense will remain (such as lock screen and certain apps like calculator, calendar, etc.). The following threads might be helpful to you:

Yea just follow the s-off guide, the revolutionary method makes things very easy. You dont even have to worry about rooting, just s-off, install custom recovery and then installing a rooted rom will root the phone.
Also bear in mind to install an ics rom you will need the latest 3.32 firmware flashed - also very easy just follow the guides.

Only disadvantage to rooting is that there are a few apps that won't run from a rooted phone, and ie the sky go app (if you're a UK resident!)

Use supersu it will allow you to temporarily turn off root to use those apps that won't work when rooted.

You don't need to root to get a stock jellybean release on your phone. You would use a program called odin and put your phone into download mode and it will flash the system on your phone. If you don't like it or need to warranty your phone you just odin back to a official verizon release.

The custom recovery will allow you to make backups of your phone. If something breaks on your system you can simply restore a backup in like 10 mins and its good as new

I just recently had to make the same decision! Finally, after a good bit of research and youtube video watching, I decided to go ahead with the root process and couldn't be happier! Especially with Verizon being so far behind right now.
It's so easy to do. Just read and follow all the steps.
Just my 2 cents,I couldn't imagine having a non rooted phone. Even if you don't want to flash a rom, getting the bloat off is worth it. Some apps can be disabled now but a few still linger.
I may still have 'noob' status on this forum, but I have been lurking here for years. And I have rooted all of the Android phones that I have had (Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt, and now GS3). I don't do much with my rooted phones, but being able to run a version of the operating system (JB) that seems like it will never make it out of Verizon R&D is totally worth it.
The root method for the S3 is incredibly easy. And there is plenty of help on these forums. Just make sure you read the info before moving forward, and all should be well.
I would say go Root. I too have been following the forums, and you will find an incredible amount of information on this site. Helpful people as well.

I would definitely root. There are so many roms, mods, themes that you can flash and it seems like something new every week. Plus this maybe one of the easiest phones to root that there is. There many guides that will help you and the community is wonderful.

I rooted my Droid Incredible and my Kindle Fire. Both were easy with a tutorial. It made the Kindle Fire a whole new device. I was waiting to root my S3 until after Verizon released the JB update, but seeing the quoted post above, it looks like I don't have to wait for Verizon.
I believe there is a one click root method for the VZW S3 so there's really no reason not to root!

You don't need to root to get a stock jellybean release on your phone. You would use a program called odin and put your phone into download mode and it will flash the system on your phone. If you don't like it or need to warranty your phone you just odin back to a official verizon release.

You still need an unlocked bootloader to do this which would void warranty anyways.
So worth it!!! Root it!!! There are plenty of Step-by-Step guides in the developers forum that makes it so easy...but please read all the steps first then do them....
You know, I would always root, but would be much less tempted if Verizon didn't load up MY phone with bloat.

Its a matter of prefrence really.
I recently went back to stock and im content as can be.
Not really missing anything and there's tons of APK's around to get u what ur looking for.

Yes rooting your phone opens up the posibility to do anything flash roms, mod, ect.
If you like being able to customize your interface then you should defiantly root your phone.
i am new to the one s but not to flashing. i am coming from a galaxy s sprint epic. while i was on that, cm10.1 & 10.2 were great advancements to the stock gb which always seems to take forever for updates. but with this huge leap in smartphone power, do i really need to root & flash? even with all the bloatware that i don't use, the phone is very fast. and i can get two days easily from my battery (which i charge every night so that's not an issue). i used to flash just to have the latest but i think i just want functionality. also, i don't put that much on my phone so 16g should be plenty, even with all the bloatware. not that i wouldn't flash to get better use out of my device but i just don't think i need to. please convince my otherwise.
Root just to try new roms or mods that improve your experience. Otherwise no need

Once youve been rooted, you cant be without root, regardless of ROM.
There are plenty of benefits in rooting even on stock roms.
Infact, a non-rooted device is like a windows PC with only access to your desktop...

should i have posted in Q&A? i thought i did. i even had to go through statistics to see where i started this thread because i couldn't find it in Q&A. if i should've posted somewhere else, whoops, feel free to move.

why?
i guess i wasn't clear. i know the benefits of root. i've been flashing roms on my last 3 devices. the answers i was trying get were more along the lines of what are the main changes people are making to their stock phones. does all the bloatware inhibit speed or limit space? are there roms or tweeks that people can't live without? or do people unlock, root and flash just because they like to mess with their phones/have the latest even if it doesn't work correctly?

No, it is in General--It's all good--
When I get my Note 2/3 I will probably only root for Nandroids and Titanium BackUp. I think that phone and maybe SGSIV may stand on their own without a need to flash roms. Might be wrong though-- There are still more sweets after Jelly Beans--
Your last question answered your own question. Today's smartphones don't really require root, UNLESS you like tweaking your phone.....which most of us love to do, otherwise we wouldn't be here. You can easily get rid of bloatware with a new launcher. IE: Nova or Apex are my favorites. Just disable and hide them, you'll never see them again. Back in the day people rooted mainly to get the latest OS quicker....these days the newer smartphones already come with the latest OS, so it's all a matter of whether you like tweaking your phone or not. There are still great benefits to rooting, but these days it's more personal preference over flashing the latest OS.

I can explain it in one word: Control.
I want to be in charge of the device, not letting the device be in charge of me. If you want that you might as well go with apple, who makes good devices with a terrible OS, imo.
Well I will root my htc one s because the latest update to 4.1 is crap. My battery drains so fast. So if I don't find a solution for this I might downgrade back to ics 4.04 or maybe a better custom rom...otherwise I would've kept the rom not rooted. Especialy because now we can disable an app that it is not usefull.

is it just the official update that is bad? or is it a jb thing that hasn't been worked out. battery is huge for me.

Can't comment on stock but Blackout rom has been good for me.
I root because you can never seem to turn the screen brightness down far enough without root access, that and I don't like being locked out of a file system by manufacturers who don't trust my common sense.
I flash only when a device is older and/or no longer getting updated and something like CM gives me a major improvement.
Even if you want to run a stock ROM, unlocking/rooting (and flashing a custom recovery) enables you to make and restore nandroid backups and use tools like Titanium. It's also makes it easier to repair if you ever run into trouble like boot loops.
