[Q] Galaxy SII 4G (I9210) - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I just went out to get a Galaxy SII and ended up with something different. I got the Telstra 4G model with model code I9210-T. It is a totally different phone, physically bigger and a faster CPU.
I did a search and couldn't really find any helpful info, does anyone know if I can get a ROM for this? I have rooted the phone no worries but I'm concerned because I originally wanted the SII for its community support and available mods. Having this seemingly different model worries me that it won't be supported.
Can anyone tell me where I stand with this and whether or not I should keep it or get a different one? Will this see the same level of support as the SII or is it a Telstra only kind of thing?
Thanks
Tim

Hey Tim,
A few of us have started a thread here with trying different ROM's.

[Q] New and could use some help

Hey everyone! I'm new to XDA and android and could use some help. Been looking for my first android phone and am currently living in the dominican republic. My carrier operates on the 850 band for their 3g network. I need to be able to purchase an unlocked phone or a phone off contract that i can unlock without complications. Some phones i have looked into are Nexus S, Desire HD, Atrix, G2x and a few others. Nexus S doesnt work with my carrier for their 3g and the desire hd lacks a front facing camera.
I could really use some help or guidance in finding the right phone... All your help is greatly appreciated. Have posted in a few other forums, but to not much avail. Thanks again everyone!
The Galaxy 4g phone has 850 band and FFC and is a decent choice. I do not know how good the Coverage of 4g is in Dominican so even though it is a great phone you may only have 3g reception. You could get a Galaxy S phone and install a FFC in it(or buy it that way) would save some money but it is older tech .... .........BUT there is a ALOT of support here in XDA for the Galaxy S. And there is multi language already installed in it.Or you could wait until the New S2 makes it here in June sometime.
If you went with a Galaxy S (Vibrant,Captivate, etc) here in the states you can get for about 175-250.00 right now vs 450-550.00 for a new phone.
So, there are some options. I would stay away from the Atrix, Motorola is not hacker friendly and there are some other quality issues about them I am not convinced it is worth the money.
BTW, Welcome to the forum. This is the best place to be to learn about Android phones. Look at the specific phone forums and read up. This will assist in understanding the phone and help you make a more informed decision.
Good Luck in your quest....... Cheers
Thanks for the helpful info. I have been reading up on the forums and have also heard about the Atrix issues.
As for the Galaxy S, I do like that phone, but as you mentioned, it does have some older tech especially compared to what is being released this month and next. I don't mind paying a little more having a more up to date phone. Hence my hesitation with something like the Desire HD or Inspire and it's lack of a FFC.
As for the network here, no 4g yet. One of the carriers "Orange" is looking into it, but wouldnt be for a while. Also, I'm quite exactly how much longer I'll be here.
Desperate to get a phone and was hoping to do it this week while my friend in back in the US and could pick it up for me so that I dont have to pay the rediculous taxes at customs when ordering electronics.
The G2X is looking like an option, but i dont know about unlocked nor exactly how much at this point. This is proving to be more difficult that i imagined, been at it for a few months now. Who would think that with so many choices there would actually be so few choices!
Any continued help is still greatly appreciated! thanks again!

Rogers models?

I have seen a few roms on xda for the infuse that are for Rogers phones only here on xda? I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G that is originally a Rogers phone and I would like to flash/root it. My question is, could I have problems flashing the roms I find here because it is in fact a ''Rogers'' 4g?? Sorry if this is a noob question I just want to make sure before I go and flash it.
That depends, is your phone's model SGH-T959V?
The model is SGH-1997R. So I think the answer would be no.
Sweet Thanks guys. Im thinking its a 1997 as well because the camera is in the center rather than off to the side but I don't have the phone in hand right now to check. After having to teach Rogers tech support how to check the model number through the settings he was still unable to tell me which model it is they carry. Ill just check when I get the phone back. I wont touch it if its a SGH-T959V untill I read more into the difference on flashing these two phones.

[Q] International S5 to US

I'm trying to figure out if an S5 bought in India would work here in the US on sprint. Family over in India sent one over and didn't consider the potential band/frequency issues. It hasn't arrived yet but I am hesitant to use it considering Samsung's region lock etc. Anyone have any experience? Can it be rooted / flashed and work ok on sprint?
I searched around on the forum seeking an answer and I didn't find anything specifically explaining yea or nay. Closest I got was :

Need a quick answer with GSM

Hi guys. I'm planning on buying an sch-i535 which I know is a US Verizon exclusive phone. my question is, can I use it with GSM (SIM) generic European bands?
and does CyanogenMod support it on GSM. are there any restrictions of using it on GSM, like being able to only use 2G mobile data. or can I tune it to be just like a normal S3. I like this model only because it has 2GB of RAM. And I'm trying to mainly use it with CM12.1 as I hate Samsung's stock ROM.
Please guys reply quickly as I'm talking to the seller now and I want to confirm. thank you

A few things to consider before buying this variant would be if the bootloader is indeed unlocked. If not you will not be able to run CM on a locked bootloader.
I've used my old S3 on a GSM carrier here in the states with no issues however it needed a CDMA sim card to work properly. I know you can choose which network you want to use and there may even be an option for a specific type of mobile data used, sorry I haven't been on the stock rom verizon uses in quite a long time. Personally I would look for an unlocked phone. This may be SIM unlocked via the factory but I've seen a lot of people use it internationally and have tons of issues with it

Yes. there seem to be tons of issues with this model, I already have an I9300 and an Xperia Z2 which is an astonishing phone, I only like Samsung because of the strong developers contribution and development support in general as I'm a super used, besides, I like the small form factor of the S3 and it's pocket-friendly size and weight. I'm not gonna consider this i535 due to all the hassle it's gonna leave me with . Thank you very much, I'll try to look for an I9305 or even an S4

I'n my opinion it's a better option to stay away from this variant

[ Q ] will S6 bought from the Samsung Philippines work with T-Mobile?

I forgot to get the actual model number but I guess it's the international version? In any case, does anybody have an actual experience of bringing an unlocked S6 bought directly from Samsung to t-mobile? I'm trying to figure that out. Don't want to get back to the states and find out it doesn't fully work on some/all T-Mobile bands.
Ah never mind, I found it. It is sm-g920fd. Should have used searched first. Looks like it will work with T-Mobile, just incase anybody reading this is searching too.
