HD Movies - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I am a iPhone user who is going to make the switch. I had an lg nitro, which I took back. One of the things that I thought was odd with the android market is that you can't rent HD movies like I can in ITunes . Will I be able to rent HD movies from Google Play or will I have to rip from Blu ray and resize and put on the phone?

Some, but they cost more. You're best off ripping from Blu Ray or DVD and compressing to under 4 GB to watch it. All video formats should be supported without issue, especially with MX Video Player.
Yes, there is a hard limit of 4 GB as a result of formatting the internal user storage as FAT32 for USB Mass Storage support. The only other option is exFAT which isn't compatible with many OSes, or ext4 which is likely to be unsupported.

There are several threads here in General and Themes and Apps that talk about this.
I don't know of any reliable site that lets you stream movies on our gTabs at the moment (that doesn't mean one doesn't exist). I rip movies and move them to my gTab to watch. I also use my iPad/iPhone to watch NetFlix streaming movies (they have announced they will release a NetFlix app for Android soon).
Try using search and you will see this issue has been around for a while.

Epixhd.com works. Uses Flash I think. It's included w some cable Co. services, e.g., Cox.

androidvideo.net has movies and TV shows. You used to be able to just go to the site and watch but the admin says people were stealing the content. Now you have to sign up for a free or premium paid account.
Yeah i rip my dvds too but looking to watch at hotel and a week long stay can be lots of dvds
what you use to rip your dvds?
I use dvd fab.
+1 for DVD Fab. It is by far the most full featured and easy to use movie ripping tool.
I watch on justin tv. Its really not on demand but sometimes there are some good movies.

I'm using the latest version (I don't remember what it is as the app auto-updates). I rip all of my movies as xvid avi files resulting in movie files sizes between 400 MB to 1.2 GB depending on length of the movie or tv episode I rip.
They have profiles for different video format outputs already built in to the app and you have the ability to create your own custom format profiles as well. The full app with all of the options is pretty expensive in my opinion but you can find it from 3rd-party sellers for way less.
The quality of the resulting video for me looks fine on the gTab but don't expect it to look good if you have a dock and are using the HDMI out to view it on your big television (it will look pretty bad).

I need it for my kid’s movies - so I am not looking to use the HDMI or the docking station.
Yes, I noticed is kind of pricey – when you said third party you mean Google it to find it cheaper?
And as far of the format I am looking something really easy to use like plug and play without many configurations to set. Is this something like that?

Handbrake does not work for me - I don't know if is because I have a 64 computer or what.
I have reinstalled 3 times and I always get an error with any DVD that I tried.
Just navigate on over to either of these sites and enjoy, they work beautifully on my Gtab running Vegan Beta 5

Here's my favorite so far. Some old school cartoon series and older shows but full lengh good movies too. Looks like it was set up by the same people as Hulu but actually works.

[Q] How can I watch 720p mkv video on Inspire 4G??

Wondering if anyone has a solution here, AVI and MKV have issues playing. The MKVs are 720p HD tv shows, and the audio is great, but the video is choppy\slow-mo. Has anyone managed to find a player or a method to resolve this? I know this has been discussed in other forums, but related to different phones, so curious if there's a specific fix to this phone, or if a 720p is just too much for the Inspire 4G to handle. I wouldn't think so since last year's iPhone 3G and 3GS and 4 can handle it just fine.... I'm thinking something is wrong or I'm using the wrong app.
I don't think the stock video player can do it, so you'll have to try some third party apps like VPlayer, RockPlayer, and Act 1. Let us know if any of those three get the job done. I'm curious too. Otherwise we may need to convert videos.

VPlayer - Same
RockPlayer - Same
Act 1 - Same
None of these seem to work. I wonder if it's the way my videos are encoded? I sure hope not, because all the MKV files I download from the torrents of tv shows I miss are formatted the same way. They always played fine on iPhone
Anyone else experience this issue and find a resolution?
Thanks!
maybe the class of your SD Card, for anything above 720p a class 6 card is needed

Oh really? I don't see any Class 6 or higher on Amazon. Mine is a class 4. Can the Inspire 4G even benefit from class 6? I'm able to watch them off the memory card on my class 4 when plugged into my computer just fine.
the desire hd can support all class cards including class 10, so i cant see why the inspire cant either.
Yea class 4 should be ok i would think? Have you tried different size files?
Is anybody else having trouble like this ?

I have 2 inspire 4g devices, and have tried both a Class 2 and a Class 4 card. I ordered a Class 10 from Amazon (they only had up to 16gb, not the 32GB like my class 4), so I'll report back tomorrow when it arrives.
The file I'm using is a 1.09GB MKV file.
I have yet to purchase the Inspire and this problem is one of the reasons that I am waiting. FWIW I have read many complaints from users having this problem.
I have the same issue
It happens on G1, Streak and Inspire. However, cheap Archos doesn't this issue. Isn't that ironic? I was trying to copy the Archos player but no success...

Clearly it's either the way my video is encoded, or the lack of proper decoder on the android. I am at the end of my rope trying to resolve. I didn't like my iPhone because it's incompatibilities, and everyone with Android said "get an Android cause it'll decode anything" ... lol... wonder if we'll ever have a solution to decode a mkv properly.
You do realize that your phone is only capable of show video resolution up to 400p? MKV is mostly used for HD rips because it ends up having the best quality after compression, but your phone is not HD in the sense that it is over a standard definition television vertical wise (watching it in wide screen format).
Anything bigger will have to be scaled down by the player, sucking up battery life and you wont notice a quality difference. Aside from that, forcing your device to play something higher res will suck the battery life as well because it will be more intensive on the cpu. Why dont you just use xvid rips in avi format? Everything that's ripped in mkv is always ripped in xvid as well.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do is just rework the files. Any suggestion on an easy program for MAC to convert MKV to avi?
Thank you much!
I am using avi format xvid and it still can't play anything in hd. My captivate plays the same files fine wtf.

Yeah, the processing power is certainly there so I guess it's just an issue of improper codec execution :-(
Not sure on a player to watch them on android. I would just go through the top ones on the market place and do trial and error
I dont have a computer with osx on it currently, but VLC (the PC/OSX version) does convert file formats as well and it's free.

Yeah none worked. I think it's just the issue of the MKV file. They don't work on iPhone with any of the players either, I think it just takes more power and video processing to handle them.
Try xyflash, i used this on iphone. Android market has it also so i tried it. It plays 720p mkv bleach videos and sub titles work using mkv sub extractor. Not the best but it does the job i think
Did you guys try lower resolution files but coded in mkv?
Will the Atrix be capable of running 720p mkv files?

I don't even see an app by that name on the market. You realize that not everything for iPhone is for android, and vice versa, right?

will it be ever possible to play hd movies?

it is a HUGE inconvenience and i was wondering if it will be ever possible to play and maybe even record hd movies on the NS? if not, i am really considering to go back to the captivate
Moboplayer? I use that for all my movies in random formats. Haven't tried HD movies yet however. Nexus S screen resolution isn't HD anyways.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
You wont be able to record at 720p it lacks the hardware
As for movies ever since 2.3.3 nexus s has been able to play 720p (x264) movies but still lack proper audio codecs so no sound hopefully more audio codecs get introduced in 2.4 update when ever that comes out but dont hold your breath
If you check in dev section there is a ROM in that includes new hardware codecs but the video player that is required is not 100%

exactly you haven't played high quality HD movies on your phone experience what we are talking about
also im pretty sure he is talking about hardware support Mobo or any other player does software only for the codecs that are not supported by the OS
And ask anyone who had or has a galaxy S image quality is outstanding
Also doesn't matter if the phone is not 720p you dont having to spend time properly converting
This is a big let down for me, its true a few media players can play via software decoding but the nexus s out the box has limited media support.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
You can try the hardware multi-codec thread in the dev section. You need to flash the customized ROM though, and install ho player from Market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052318
I just recommend that you go back to your Captivate. I've had the Vibrant and sometimes I miss that my Nexus S doesn't have the hardware support to play other media files without converting, but I don't use it for media much so it wasn't a priority in the phone for me. Reading from your first post, it sounds like you use the phone a lot for watching media and somewhat use HD video recording. So that's why I recommend that you stay with the Captivate and perhaps wait for Galaxy S II if you're looking for an upgrade. Nothing can really beat the media capabilities that the Galaxy S offers.
What codec are you trying to play? I have HD videos on my Mac downloaded directly from YouTube. With no transcoding, they work fine on my Nexus S in the Gallery app using stock firmware.
H.264 has many different encoding profiles, and mobile devices (even the iPhone and iPad, along with scores of Android and Nokia devices) have limits on both the profile and the bit-rate that they can handle.
With regards to recording, the Nexus S does not do HD recording, and that's fine with me. If I want to record some video (which I do like 4-5 times a year), I'll whip out my Flip. You know why? Because recording video drains a lot of battery, and I need my Nexus S to last all day.

Market Movies

OK so I rented a movie from the Market. First I tried to play it back on my Viewsonic GTab and I get the "movie playback not supported on rooted devices (error 49)" OK no worries, I swapped the HDMI from my GTab to my TF and then the movie will start and I get no video from the actual movie frame from within the Video app although I can see all other information around the frame. I choose full screen and then a TV full of nothing. Well this sucks... I plugged in the Xoom and I am able to finally watch my movie on the big screen. Not real impressed with the Market movie (Video rental) app dictating what devices are allowed to playback my PAID rentals or the HDMI output issue on the TF. I'm lucky I have several options here or I would have been out a few dollars... WTF Google?
You got 3 tabs wow....
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
So how did playback look on the transformer was it all choppy or anything. I was thinking about renting your highness HD but I don't wanna spend 5 bucks on a movie that's choppy
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Why in the world would you want to rent movies on market?
I think to watch movies on a rooted device, all you need to do is rename the su executable to mu, then rename it back after you watch the movie.

I dunno... because we can?
Exactly I am sitting in front of my perfectly capable 46 inch high def Samsung bigscreen and can order HD movies and yet here I sit watching a movie on my 10 inch tablet. Its because I can! Lol
If you really want to rent a movie on your TF, give mspot movies a shot.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mspot.android.moviesClub&feature=search_result
I don't know if they do HD movies; I haven't paid to rent anything. I have only checked out the free of the week to make sure it works, and it does. It has a nice tablet interface, and the rentals are cheaper than google in many cases. You can also buy rental bundles, which makes it even cheaper.

new to xoom and just wondering....

I have recently brought a xoom (wifi).
it has eos ics rom pre installed.
i cant format the memory card in CWM - was that because i was trying to format the internal mem card? if so how do i format the external sd card? (i read somewhere that i can do it in my phone?)
i was looking at GEDing my xoom, and just using the officiual updates... can i just jump straight in with that as i assume all the unlocking and rooting has been done to get ICS on it?
i use a cyanogenmod rom on my phone, because its been tweaked and is faster etc then the official roms will i be better with a user rom over GED if i choose a stable build?

Use your phone to format external sd.
Flash EOS Jellybean nightly and the newest Gapps...you will be very happy.
CM is a WIP on the Xoom, imho, EOS is the way to go.
Forget the OTAs...custom roms rule!
As far as the root thingy...
Yes, if you have the EOS ICS installed then it got rooted somewhat before.
Thanks guys. Been having a play around over weekend. The SD card was a bugger, formatted or wiped it with the tablet then it wouldn't show up. Didn't have another device which recornised it. Took ages but got there...

Those aren't proper blu ray quality files. 800MB is barely a good DVD quality.
Your TV is far away, and Xoom close to face - that's why you can see a huge difference in quality.
Like the stickman said, 800MB is nowehre near Blue-Ray quality.
Right around 700 is a standard DVD rip to fit it on CD.
Blue-Ray rips are normaly around 1,5GB up to around 4,5GB.
And he´s right with the range factor. Your Xoom has a pretty high resolution and it sits right in front of you.
At 2,5-3 meters to your tv, you just dont see the fractures, but trust me, they are there.
Get higher quality file and try again. MX player is not bad and definately capable of putting out amazing quality vids

Brilliant, thanks, will try a bigger file, i never considered that since they looked so good on tv.
ok, so i have quickly downloaded a 1.5gig 720 rip to test(downloading is quicker then ripping on my pc) , the picture quality looks much better. though it has 2 audio tracks - track 1 is hindu and track 2 is english, the file wont play english, i even used a merge programe to merge the video file with the english audio (in effect removing the hindu language) but this doesnt play any audio on the tablet, but it is there on my pc, any thoughts? how to correct so works on tablet?
