I'm a noob when it comes to rooting/flashing because I just bought an infuse 4G. Sorry if this is a useless thread but i've looked through guides and tutorials and I'm still not sure and I don't want to mess up the new device.
I have an infuse 4G with stock 2.3.6, if i wanted to install a custom ROM would I have to be rooted? If so, how do i root on 2.3.6?
How are you confirming that you have 2.3.6? Just checking because, until the very recent AT&T release of 2.3.6, these came with 2.2 Froyo.
To install a custom rom, you'll need to be rooted.

Hi, been reading here for ages, but n00b videos and such have stopped me joining, but now I feel confident enough to move up to a custom ROM with instructions I'm able to follow.
I have a Galaxy S currently running JVQ Europe, although I'm in Australia.
I'd like to use MilkyS MOD but have a question or two first.
Will this go on JVQ?
Lagfix: Am I right in assuming that if I haven't added this, it's not there?
You talk of two versions, Odin and CWN, would one be easier for me than the other?
Please be patient with an old man. I did manage to root this phone when I upgraded 2.2 with 2.3.4 JVP, then JVQ, and I managed to get them on OK, I also changed the region code to Europe ..... but that's the extent of my "knowledge".
As far as I know, although I rooted JVP, I haven't rooted JVQ, so my phone isn't rooted, does this mod root, or need rooting first?
Thanks, Billy
if you post in the galaxy s forum, im sure you will get an answer
Hello all
I'm new at this forum and new at all the galaxy stuff
I have Samsung galaxy S II, 2.3.3
I want to put a good rom, I need to upgrade to 2.3.4?
or i can leave it 2.3.3 with a good rom?
Ty
Your very lucky to have one.
I've always believed before you flash a new ROM you should ask yourself "What is wrong with the ROM I have". If that answer to that is nothing, you should probably leave it alone (My 2 cents).

It's up to you. If you wish to get the most out of your phone (although it is already a beast of a device), then you could root it and try out new roms. Here's a suggestion: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274 .
If you plan to install the custom ROM or root, I advice not to upgrade to 2.3.4, I was told Android 2.3.4 is hard to root.

That's a lie.
When I tried it, Gingerbreak does not work on 2.3.4 but that was when 2.3.4 was just released. Now, I have seen many successful rooting on 2.3.4, should have checked before I post.
Hi, I have a SGH-i727r (Not the Skyrocket, its the Canadian rogers variant) running on the stock 4.0.4 ROM from rogers, and i was thinking about rooting my phone recently, and I have found this method,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
but I am not sure if it will work on 4.0.4 since it only says 2.3.5 and 2.3.6
some other people on the forum seems to claim it works, but I never saw a result posted for the version & model of my phone.
By the way, if this doesn't work, is there a method that would, or simply an easier method such as SuperOneClick?
Thanks in advance
The easiest way is probably to install the modified room
They are always rooted out
Thanks but can you go into detail on how it works?
Sorry, I am new here

I have an Infuse 4g at&t with the official Gingerbread 2.3.6 and I want to root it and get CWM for installing Custom Roms...i see many threads which links ODIN methods with 4 types of firmware and bootloader issues...m just confused which i would select for flashing....Help me out
If you are looking to get a custom ROM, then just go straight to installing a recovery CWM. Then Flash the ROM of your choice, no need to worry about rooting unless you are planning to stay on stock.
I have used this thread multiple times but post #2 is what you want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081 I am a Heimdall One-clicker type of user. And you can't go wrong with anything from qkster. But please read and read again follow the steps and attention to details for this and any ROM you are flashing.
