I have a couple of question/advices I want to receive an answer for about CPU.
So I am struggling to get better battery life without hurting performance.
1) Can CPU apps hurt battery life by themselfs. I mean could only using an app not regarding the settings damage the battery life. Is it better to let the cpu work by itself and not any apps managing it?
2) Which is the best CPU control app?
3) Will Underclocking improve my battery life a lot and will it make performance worse. What are the best settings to keep battery life and performance optimized at the same time. If I want to play heavy games I will overclock for the time I play the game. But I don't want my cpu to be working at 1600ghz for instance when I am not doing gaming or similar heavy processes. What are the best settings to improve battery life but not hurt performance?
If you use an app like SetCPU, you can have profiles. I used to have it so that the phone would underclock when the battery reached a certain % or was too hot.
If you're S-Off and rooted, you can get way better battery life if you flash a new kernel. I'm using Faux v004, I've set SetCPU off and just let the kernel do its thing, and my battery life is at 1 day and almost 15 hours.
(I also play a lot of games and the Faux kernel is very resposnive. My games load much faster that they did on stock kernel)

Apps like that don't really have any more of a drain than checking your email or receiving a text. If using Faux Kernel, there's an app out there designed for it that helps with clocking and undervolting it, made by the man himself. If not, AnTuTu has one on the market, I think.

Fauxclock hasn't been updated in ages and it's by Romanbb, not faux, afaik.
As for the OP's questions:
1. Not really. I haven't noticed any extra battery drain with CPU apps so it's probably not significant.
2. I don't think there's a 'best' CPU app. I used to use SystemTuner, which worked fine for me, but I switched to SetCPU because I wanted to underclock the intellidemand governor on faux's latest beta.
3. Underclocking will lead to some improvement in battery life. As for undervolting, some people say it helps, others say it's a placebo; personally I've never bothered with it. You could try using faux's kernel with the intellidemand governor, which sets the clock speed (and whether the second core is online/offline) depending on the CPU load. As for best settings, it depends on each individual kernel and your own personal needs, so you might want to try flashing a few custom kernels to decide which one is for you.

I am running Cognition 4.4.8, which will not allow OC/UC. I actually just want to UC. What recommendation would you have for a kernel compatible with Cognition 4.4.8 for Captivate that would allow me to UC?
Don't you mean oc/uv? I don't think you know what you are talking about.
Yeah its UV (undervolt). Find any kernel that allows it and is working with your ROM. Maybe ask in that thread as others could be using a custom kernel for that exact reason.

Although undervolting and underclocking to save battery is a waste of time. The cpu doesn't use that much battery in the first place, the screen and the modem use the most power, you want the charge to last switch to the lowest brighteness and 2g, that will give way more battery than uc/uv will.

+1 on the battery topic. Even at a high OC the battery drain is not that much worse... a little yeah but not too severe.
Also good point about UC.. wasn't thinking about that at all ..underclock what!?!?
some people falsely think that the phone runs at 1ghz all the time, when in fact it downclocks itself and ramps up clockspeed when it needs it....so unless you have an app thats using 100% CPU all the time, your phone is running around 200mhz at idle.

+1 again Although there are different governors that do different things most phone at stock will idle down to 200mhz. My phone for instance idles down to 800mhz, but thats just my prefrence

Thanks for the message on how little battery undervolting saves. That was quite helpful. I did try the discussion board for Cognition, but no one seemed to be posting on using an alternate kernel, which is why I asked for recommendations here.

If you want the best battery life, I suggest something other than cognition. In my experience, i9000 based custom roms get better battery life.

@sixstringsg I notice that you are using Cyanogenmod. I keep looking at that, but since it was still not listed as stable, I was not sure whether to try it. How are you finding the stability?
I want to make sure I'm not trippin', I've searched all thru the dev forum, and I don't see a non overclocked kernel. everyone complains about battery life but they are using a kernel that wasn't geared for battery life. oc kernels are for performance and bragging rights. we need a stock kernel with uv and ram optimization along with battery optimization mods

Why not just not overclock? Also, the kernel that comes in Inspired Ace isn't overclockable.
There are many battery saving options! If you have the Leedroid kernel, in setcpu you have the option of running your proccesor at Powersave, performance,smartass and so on...this is also in a few other kernels but I am not sure which ones at the moment.
And if you are really hyped up on saving battery, shutoff haptic feedback, turn of data when you are not using it, lower screen brightness, Use a task killer to kill stray apps(if you were playing angry birds kill it afterwards).
These are a few things you can do that will increase your battery life significantly...
With an overclock capable kernel, you can underclock. I run mine at 921 MHz and don't notice any performance hit. I've tweaked the undervolt to as low as I can get away with. I get pretty awesome battery life that way.
Before you ask, I'm using a kernel I compiled myself from HTC's latest linux source for the Inspire. It's essentially stock with only the addition of the frequency table and hooks for OC/UV.

Simply underclocking will solve your problems. I prefer to run @1.4 Ghz. I have everything optimized for speed & efficiency and still don't lose in battery performance.
Running CM7 with LordMod UE 2.6 kernel and smartass CPU governor, I can set the max speed to 768mhz with very little performance hit noticed. I might just keep it that way, haven't decided yet. Scrolling is still smooth, Angry Birds is still smooth. The cool thing about running max 768mhz with the pinky undervolt script is the CPU voltage never goes above 900mv.
I'm running CM7 with nightly 91 and on my Vibrant, they made a kernel that was stock uv no oc and u could use it all day, literally....

but i just want to know which combination of roms and kernels will give me a great battery life and at the same time i want to be able to overclock to 1.5 GHz
i looked through the forums and i did all the basic stuff like
undervolting
setting profiles in setcpu
and removing all the bloatware from the phone
but everyone has a different combination and im really confused as to which combination to use
right now im using eaglesblood 2.3.7 with the dragon kernel and its really not working very well
so any and all help will be appreciated

My opinion:
1. Jump on a stock-based ROM with stock kernel and UC (underclock to 900-800 Mhz, you would be surprised you notice very little change in performance). Most stock-based ROM users report back great battery life.
2. Jump on a CM7 Nightly 199 or higher (Reports of great battery life, I can attest to this) with morfic or faux123's kernel (I prefer morfic's) which you can undervolt easily with Pimp My CPU (search XDA). I prefer it to SetCPU because the only profile I use is UC when the screen is off and with Tegra's DVFS CPU governor, it already does a good job of doing this. I also UC with this setup.
Delete Wi-Fi Calling (Kineto.apk) from your phone if you're not using it. I learned this from lotherius, it's always running in the background even when off and not in use. I was shocked to see the improvement.
I know it sounds stupid, but if you're in class or at work and don't need a barrage of updates on your phone, just turn off data. Most ROMs have a quick toggle setting to efficiently turn it on and off quickly and you'll be quite happy with how long it lasts. If you have to have data on or think it's moronic to have an Android phone that's not does not always have a data connection, battery drain is just the price that is payed.

Good question, and I think that is totally up to you.
For example, my father and I both own G2x's, he runs a modified stock ROM (xboarder's ROM) and I run CM7. Without a doubt he gets better battery life than me, but at the cost of not having the features I have.
That may be a rough way of putting it but yes, using CM7 with all it's awesome features come with the price of not being as battery efficient.
The real question is if being less "battery efficient" actually means it's a bad thing. In my case it doesn't matter to me at all. Using the quick panel toggles in CM7, I only turn on data when I need it and I easily pull 15+ hours a charge because of it, assuming moderate usage.
Consider lotherius's tsugi rom, currently in version beta 3. It is my daily driver, stable, faster than 2.3.3 based roms, and excellent battery life. He has included a 2G toggle app that can automatically switch to 2g radio when screen is off to save lots of juice.

Sorry I wasn't able to do a good search on my phone for this, so figured I would just post this question. Has anyone undervolted the HOX so far? If so what did you use and what were the settings? Can caulkin undervolt script be installed on the phone? Any input would be awesome.

I did try undervolting the HOX using the script you mentioned, and setcpu. The results were not any better than stock voltage. In fact, my battery life dropped. Right now messing with voltage isn't really worth it IMO. Wait until we have kernel source, and get custom kernels. It doesn't do much for us now. Sure we can overclock now, but even then its not a good trade off in respects to battery life.
Don't bother undervolting. It doesn't increase battery life. Underclocking on the otherhand can increase battery life.
Just wondering in everybody else's experience which kernel they find to be the best as far as battery life and performance goes. I've only seen 3 kernels for 4.4.2 being leankernel dkp (I believe that's the name of it) and ktweaker. Also what settings you found to be the best for you (governors, undervolting settings, overclocking settings, Etc.) I do a lot of facebooking but that's about it. So I guess let the discussion begin? I'm running the latest update of cm11.
Kernel are fone depended. Wat works for some ppl might not work for othets. Try them all out let them run couple days then u can decide which is better for you.
BMS and KT747 also have 4.4 versions
Best is subjective. Here's my subjective approach, so caveat emptor, take what I say as personal belief and not a professional benchmark testing...
For AOSP-based roms, here's what my experience is:
Lean: Easiest and simplest of the kernels. Has limited governors, but the tweaked InteractiveX is pretty effective at doing what you need. It also has a crapton of S3 specific tweaks to improve battery life. You can overclock to 1.72 (I believe...) Downside? The min frequencies are 384k, which means other kernels can go into a deeper sleep. The TCP algorythms are limited too, so choose 'reno'.
DKP: I love this kernel, but several people report it doesn't work for them. This kernel has a ton of governors, with 'freelunch' and 'asswax' being the best. There are also a lot of TCP algorythms (choose 'yeah' for best performance). You can overclock to something ridiculous like 2.1... but I keep it at 1.62; there's also deep sleep frequencies down to 54k (yes... 54000), but I tend to stay at108k. The downside? Some people can't get this kernel to work on their device and it doesn't have some of the battery saving tweaks Lean does.
KT: This is kind of the 'go to' for many people, because it has a standalone app that flashes in the process and the dev is pretty active with the S3 version here. Many of the same features of the previous two, but different governors and nothing that's a device-specific tweak; the kernel is developed for multiple devices.
BMS: This, to me, is a similar kernel to KT and was my go-to for 4.3 roms. I haven't used it in a while, so I can't speak to if it offers more governors and customization.
My take and choice?

Anytime, man. I'm ADD when it comes to roms and kernels, so I'm constantly changing them, but I really like the DKP/Gummy combo. FYI, if you're going to flash Gummy, get the 1/15 build... it's the one I'm on and is the most stable as of late.
I also recommend using the TricksterMOD app from the Play Store. It allows you to modify every feature the kernel will allow and can set on reboot.
Let me know if you want to know what my settings are in Trickster... I have it pretty dialed-in to solid performance and battery life.
Oh and as flyest said... nandroid, THEN flash. You should probably wipe dalvik and cache too. You don't have to, but I've had some bootloops before when I didn't.

I've only had issues like that when trying to flash anything my girlfriend's phone. However as far as trickster goes I can't afford the donation version at the moment.
What about I/o scheduler?

Don't even bother with the donation version... you can do everything you need with the free one.
As for I/O... you'll hear various claims that one is better than the other, but I stick with ROW. For the memory our device has 'Read Over Write' is the best scheduler you'll get with these kernels. FIOS is really the best, if you can find it, but ROW is what I stick with.

MPU Voltages: Press minus once for -25. Note that this may cause a 'wake lag' with the screen, so revert to 1150 @ the 1.512 frequency if you have issues.
I also tick the box for 'kernel settings' on reboot, so the app overrides other settings that are in effect @ boot.

How do I change the tcp
In Trickster, TCP is at the very top of the 'Settings' window and should be a drop down menu.

Thank you very much
I've always used Lean Kernel for touchwiz and aosp roms. Very battery friendly and over clockable. I also like DKP for touchwiz. DKP has TricksterMod support and I believe Lean Kernel does as well. But if the rom has performance in the settings menu of the rom I use that instead.
