Bad service. - HTC Sensation

My service keeps dropping. It was working fine and then I flashed the radio for ARHD. It started after that on every ROM I flash. I ran the latest firmware update, which is supposed to change the radio, but I am getting the same issue. Any advice?

Can you remember your previous radio ? If so revert to that and see if it improves.
If you flash the newest firmware 3 times, Your just flashing the same radio 3 times.
Look for the Sensation Radio & RIL Thread, and test out some other radios

When I try to change the radio, it says that it loads it... But when I go into the software, it's not showing the new radio. That's the problem I am having. I do not recall the radio I had.
My problem is that regardless of what I do, it still shows the same radio. It does not show the changed radio.

I've changed it now, but I seem to be getting the same problem. I've tried every radio for ICS and they are all doing the same thing. They just drop signal. I completely lose signal and then it shows now bars.

Just small question
You are flashing matching RIL too right for the radio. One common problem happens when radio and ril doesn't match is that service drops pretty frequently which seems to be your case

Actually, I was flashing the right RIL. I found out what it was, it was user error, really. I had WiFi on the entire time, and the ROMs drop power to signal boost when WiFi is on, once I turned WiFi off, I was not having any further problems. So, it was me, nothing actually wrong with the device.

Best Radio for TMobile USA?

While my radio seems to be mostly working, I don't know if any other would work better or give me faster speeds. It seems my data reception is a bit variable, sometimes web pages load slow enough not to seem like 3G, other times speed is decent.
I have TMobile USA in a 3/4g area, InsertCoin 3.4.4, and radio 10.58.9035.00P_10.15.9035.02_2. What is considered best Radio and RIL for TMobile USA?

I was just hoping to hear from other TMobile users who have knowledge of radios. Before I start flashing radios, I want to have reason to think the one I am putting will be better, as I understand there is some risk.

Saint Louis, where we have 10mhz of AWS.
I would like to go to the 10.56 radio and ril .169. I understand the safest way to flash the radio is to flash a RUU, updating the ROM as well. I would like to get rid of the InsertCoin anyway as I am having another issue with it. I want to keep clockwork, the factory unlocked state and root. This phone was an Asian factory unlocked phone, but I want an English RUU. Any recommendations?
Actually, i realized that I have a mismatch between my RIL and my radio (I didn't change yet). (This is how the seller set my phone up, as I bought it used.)
I have 10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2 with HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ.

HTC-RIL 2.2.0173HMQ from the new Sensation XE RUU!

[Q] 3g/4g Switching Bug? Post here

OK, so I'm trying to round up all of those who are experiencing the 3g/4g radio switching bug. In a nutshell, it's this:
In the middle of a data-intensive process, the radio will switch several times from 3g to 4g to 3g to 4g, and over and over again. Often, it will cause disconnects, failed downloads, and interrupted streaming audio, etc.
If you are experiencing this bug, please post in this thread, and be sure to include whether you have the US or EU version of the phone. I want to consolidate all those with the problem into a large thread, so it can get more visibility.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem with my One S.
When the phone idle, the connection is 3G but when i use the data, it switch to 4G/3G/4G/etc...
As you said, it cause disconnects and and sometimes resolving errors.
My phone :
HTC One S 1.53.401.2 (stock rom)
Kernel : 3.0.8-01050-ge2a40ab
Baseband : 0.15.31501S.19_10.12.31501S.06L
Build : 1.53.401.2.CL47230
Operator : Free (France)
Same problem, with a SH23 EU phone and firmware version 1.53.401.2.
It switches from 3G and H (which is more 3.5G or 3G+ than 4G here), but I didn't experienced connexions problems (but haven't had many opportunities till now)
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see that another thread already exists in General forum.

I'm with the same phone and same behavior exactly.
I've already notified HTC about t a week or more ago.
I believe this is due to EU software. My reasoning is this:
On my T-MOUS One S, everything is fine on stock firmware with root. I NEVER experience this problem, the only switching I ever get is when I'm on a fringe area with NO 3/3.5G. As soon as I flash a rom that is based on EU firmware (all of them basically), I can't run speedtests without data being interrupted and the status bar shows switching from H to 3G repeatedly. No, this is not a scientific test by any means, but once again I have no problems whatsoever on my T-Mobile US stock rom.
T mobile does have the bug
It is because the T Mobile base is programmed to not switch from 4g but I assure you I own the phone and if you do speed test you will see this bug is definitely present..
I've been doing speedtests since I bought the phone.. it never happens on mine
whether you like it or not..
Guess you have the magic device that does not have the bug which everyone else has..even though tmobile acknowledged the issue already as well as the people with the EU version which also has the bug..

T-mobile HTC sensation signal problems

I need help, I'm already desperate...
Got a T-mobile HTC sensation, it was already unlocked for other carriers but no S-off or unlocked bootloader.
I got an S-off, unlocked the bootloader, changed CID, flashed Android Revolution HD 6.7.2, but I have HORRIBLE signal reception. So I found that update file in the header which said "- HTC Sensation 4G (U.S. T-Mobile PG5810000 | T-MOB010) users can flash this for better signal and data speeds!" I installed it... NO IMPROVEMENT, my last hope is flash a different radio. Anybody knows what's the problem and how to fix it?
configs right now
different carrier sim (not t-mobile)
S-off, unlocked loader
HBOOT: 1.27.11111
Radio: Radio_11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
cid changed to 1111111
firmware: 3.33
ROM right now: is the XE version with beats (tried 1.2.2 too, no change)
Kernel: faux
EDIT: just found out that my wifi is not working either, tried the boot.img fix, didn't help. I get Wifi for a brief second and if I managed to connect it will stay for a while, but if I don't no wifi after that.

Greetings. I'm taking a stab at asking my question here because it seems sort of related.
I'm a T-mobile USA customer with a brand new SIM card in my Sensation 4g that I bought a few months ago.
My bootloader is unlocked, I'm S-off, I've flashed the custom firmware (version: 3.32.401.3) that was recommended for those flashing the Cyanogenmod 9 ROM. I'm currently using the most recent STABLE Cyanogenmod 9 ROM (not 9.1, but the STABLE 9 ROM). I'm using the stock Cyanogenmod 9 kernel (the one that came with the ROM: 3.0.26-g7290c7f). I never bothered to flash a new radio, not sure if that's a mistake or not.
My reception is good but it seems rather obvious that my phone is completely unable to hook up to or unaware of the 4g network. When downloading, the icon in the taskbar always shows either "3g" or "H" and when I check the "Status" in "About Phone" my "Mobile Network Type" is always listed as UMTS:3 or HSDPA:9.
Can anyone make any suggestions for how I might begin the trouble shooting process to remedy this issue. Thank you in advance for any sage like advice you might provide, I'm pretty lost here.

H is good. It means you are on an HSDPA network. That's 4G for the purposes of this conversation (though what really constitutes 4G is a little more involved)
HSDPA:9 might just be the best speeds that are available in your area. For instance 8 is the best I can get at my house. No amount of better phones will fix that. It's just what's available from the tower.

That's helpful thank you. One last question in the interest of clarification. Should I find myself in an HSPA+ reception area, should I expect the information over the reception bars to change from 3g to 4g and would "Mobile Network Type" then reflect HSPA+ as opposed to HSDPA 9?
Just curious so I might know what to look for when crossing into better network areas.
Thanks again for the tip.
The H means 4g technically. You can update your radio and ril very easily. Will find links and edit post

Thanks for the link. I guess what I was wondering is whether or not I actually need to update my radio, I'd feel a lot more confident in my reception if I ever saw HSPA+ listed in my phone's "Mobile Network Type", but I never do. I had previously thought that HSDPA was 3G, but maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks for the link, flashing a new radio is something I had been giving consideration, I'm just wondering how user friendly the process is. Like picking a needle out of a haystack, or is there someway to narrow down what radio/ril combo is best for one's phone/network.
I'll read through the thread for the link you posted and update my progress here later. Thanks for the info.

your data connection will still say 3G, unless you start to use the data then it will automatically switch to 4G/H (saves battery this way)
HTC made a fault with the Sensation with building the antennas into the back case (hand over the back of the phone = small loss of reception)
Theres a program called getRIL in the play store. You can update your radio and ril as long as your root. Which i assume u are. I do it thep old fasion way though.

[Q] No connection. No service at all

I have a problem with the connectivity of my One X AT&T. I was on CleanROM 6 R2. Tried to install a sense 5 theme. Something went wrong during the installation. Got stuck in the HTC white screen, and it rebooted itself a few time but always to the HTC white screen. I was able to go into recovery and do a restore (after a few times that I couldn't enter the recovery). After the restore I had problems with my signal. I tried to flash a new RIL (HTC ATT 3.18 (Thanks to liamstears!) (0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34): http://d-h.st/Maq). Tried flashing another RIL (ATT 2.20 (0.19as.32.09.11_2_10.105.32.25): https://www.dropbox.com/s/4sbtbmw2ra...105.32.25L.zip RIL (flash separately): https://www.dropbox.com/s/4u7p8jgvk2650hl/2.20RIL.zip). It didn't help. I tried installing a new ROM (CM10.1) every thing was OK, however I keep losing my signal (x in the network). I tried flashing the RUU 1.85 (of course I relocked the bootloader etc.). Now I'm on stock 1.85, I have signal (sometimes even full) however from time to time I lose the signal completely. It usually happens when switching cell towers (downloaded GSM Signal Monitoring from the play store), and I can get stuck with no signal for hours. Tried to check in the Phone info (*#*#4636#*#* in the dialer) and changing the GSM/WCDMA/LTE to WCDMA only or WCDMA preferred, turning off and on the radio etc. Don't know what to do that I haven't already done. Furthermore, I sometimes get stuck in a loop of the HTC white screen, and it boots over and over again to that screen (can do that for quite some time). Even after getting into the bootloader and selecting recovery, it sometimes doesn't enter the recovery. And even selecting shut down from bootloader and the phone is connected to the computer (for charging), it shuts down and after 2 min. it wakes up and get stuck in the HTC white screen loop all over again. Before all that I never had a problem with the signal. I was on hboot 1.09 (I still am), and s-off. I don't remember when version I was however I remember that is had (0.17 something in it can't remember if with 'a' or not). I noticed that RUU 1.73 is (0.16) that's why I didn't want to flash it and went straight to 1.85 however I don't remember I had the at&t boot animation when I got the phone almost a year ago. BTW, I live in Israel and my carrier is using 850 & 2100 MHz UMTS (the 2100 was a roaming one due to the fact it's a MVNO) and before that I was on another carrier that has 900 & 2100 MHz.
Please HELP! Having a phone without signal is like having a brick!

The only radio towers on google mas that I know i this:
https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=217917717250281685326.0004c262acfff78edb974
and it doesn't show anything in Israel.
Furthermore, This is not a tower problem (I think). I had no problem with the original RIL that came with the phone (at&t).
I think the problem technically is not the tower itself. The problem, I think, is that there are no wcdma or lte towers there. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint only built the towers in the U.S. and Canada. While GSM towers are global, the phones were made to be used in these areas. When you flashed 3.18 radio it updated your partition to pick up these latest towers and I think that is why you are dropping or not connecting or it might have corrupted the radio. The only thing I can think of is to try earlier versions and set them to gsm only. I will try seaxhing to see if I can find out what towers are over there.

I already mentioned that my carrier is using 850/2100 (3.9G), and before the change to 3.18 I had 3.17 and before that I had CM10 etc. with no problems at all with my network connection. So using GSM is not the right answer for that (as far as I know). What is more troubling is that I am now using the stock RUU for 1.85 so I'm not even close to 3.18 and flashing RUU is also flashing the radio and other stuff, but still no change in the reception, as it comes and goes (like I said in the OP).

If you've already narrowed it down to being a hardware issue, why are you posting here?
CM does not pull from the same radio driver sense uses, So whatever you do in sense will not affect CM, if flashing different CM radios doesn't do it and RUU doesn't seem to do it, You could try RUUing up to 3.18 and see if it makes a difference but I doubt it will.
The problem is either the radio in your phone (hardware) or the towers. If you're sure it's not the towers that leaves one possibility.

If you have another phone, test the sim card. If you get same results it is a service issue. Sim cards does not affect service. But if it does work, try the above steps.

ROMS & Radios?

AT&T customer, midwest United States here. I live in a fringe area, but have always been able to get reception.... until I rooted and started running custom ROMS. It seems some ROMS, for whatever reason, get better radio reception than others.
I tried Viper, and while it was the best for reception, there were a lot of things that gave me trouble and I couldnt live with.
The CM ROMS wont even think about getting reception for me, unless the mobile data is turned on, and then are very erratic. I leave the data turned off when at home due to it always looking and searching and killing my battery. Well, that, and I always use wifi at home. I even tried the newer 3.18 AT&T radio, but it didnt help
Any suggestions as to a ROM that is known for reception? Or a specific AT&T Radio that is better for reception? While I knew different ROMS had different good/bad points... I didnt know the reception was on of those things.
Thanks

There sure is a big difference for some reason, with me anyway. The only 2 radios I have found in the Radio thread for AT&T without the RIL (senseless ROMS) is the 2.20 and 3.18 radios. I have bounced back and forth between them, and not seen any difference to speak of. The 3.18 seems to be the more erratic of the 2, for me anyway

Thanks

My advice would be to try a different radio until you get one that works for you. I work out of state so I have to change settings to wcdma only to make them work in the area. I use the 3.18 radios on both CM and Sense because they work best in my home area. Viper is based on 3.17.661.2 so AT&T 2.20 may be the best option to try.
I use 2.41 seems 80% of the others I've tried plain suck in my area

When flashing radios for CM, also be sure that you are flashing the ones designated strictly for CM as the radio fw is kept in another partition than sense. I've never had an issue finding a radio that works for me. They don't all work well but at least 1 always does. When looking for the best radio, I download them all, test them one at a time, marking the signal strength and speedtest results for each and then flash back to the radio that gave me the best results.

Yeah, changing to WCDMA helped a little, but not much

Im getting the radios out of the radio thread here on XDA. I am d/l the radios in the lower section, for CM. I didnt try a different radio when using Viper, because it was useless seeing as I had so many other issues. I wasnt aware I could use Vodaphone or Telstra radios, on AT&T. I had only tried the 2 AT&T radios. My bad, I will try the others.thanks for the info guys. The speed tests are a moot point for me. As I said, i am in a fringe area. I cant judge anything based on data speed, and leave data turned off most of the time. Im not worried about data speed, or trying to fix anything in that area. Im trying to get my phone to get good enough reception to make/receive calls dependably and send/receive texts dependably. Sorry if there was some confusion over this.
Honestly, I would have stuck with Viper, but my wifi wouldnt work, and I couldnt even get my contacts and calendar imported from my Google account. In fact, there wasnt even a Sync option for contacts. So that was a no go.
Thanks again
The 2.41 he mentioned is not a ROM mate it's a radio.

Yeah it's sense based.I run viper most of the time. That's odd what viper version were you running? I'm on my WiFi now and try to not use data connection at home being I have straight talk and had my speed throttled to almost nothing last 2 months. It have have been a bad download

Try 2.40 radio, I get the best reception down here in Texas with it, especially when I go to the lease.

Ok, I tried just about every radio in my CM ROM, to no avail. Then, on a whim, I ticked "2G Networks Only", and now I have decent phone signal/reception. This sucks though.... to have my data connection have such an affect on my voice signal. I had always left my data turned off when at home, due to being in a fringe area, and it always bouncing around and killing my battery. That, and I always use wifi at home. Now, I have to leave my data turned on, and in 2G mode... just to be able to make a call. Rather silly to me.
Thanks to everyone who offered to help... MUCH appreciated
P.S. when it was said and done, I think I wound up back on the stock radio for Cory's CM ROM (2.20?)

What does your signal do if you have 2g clicked and then turn on wifi

signal remains the same... around -87/13, but the Edge "E" icon, disappears from the screen. So, no real difference that I can tell.
It just amazes me that my data connection/type/settings can ruin my voice reception. Hopefully, its going to work decently now.
Good luck with it

thank you! so far, so good! As long as I leave the phone in 2G only, my signal is great. Well, great for my area anyway lol.
With VoLTE being so far out yet, and AT&T not having true 4G, and voice/data being on 2 different frequencies.... how in the world is this happening on this phone? How can enabling/disabling data/4G/2G have such an affect on the voice/text signal? I just cant wrap my mind around this

I'm no expert by any means but if I were to take a guess, I would say it may be due to limitations of towers that are closer to you? IE: closer towers provide 2G signal but have not been updated to support 4G? and the towers that support 4G are further from you?
Like I said, I'm no expert, I'm merely taking an educated guess based on what I do know about the technology.

Actually, I dont know either, but that does make sense. If the phone is in 4G mode, then ti will try to connect to a 4G tower, which could be further away. But, there were times I had a great signal with 4G enabled, but it was in H, or H+.... and wouldnt make a call.
Im just happy I found how to get a decent... steady signal. I love the HOX, and I love the CM ROM... but I was ready to pull my hair out with this lol.
Thanks for the input, I may ask someone at the local store next time Im in. There is one kid in there, that is pretty knowledgeable. I think the rest of them know less than I do lol
Well, I spoke too soon. Now I have good reception, but the quality of my connection SUCKS! I have flashed and tried every radio for CM, and while I have a good signal now (around -85/13) my call quality is terrible and are all fuzzy and fade in and out.
I dunno, Im thinking seriously about going back to stock. I love the idea of having control over my own phone, but Im not in this as a hobby. I just want things to work right. Every ROM I have tried has had one issue or another.... wifi connection issues, wifi going to sleep when it shoudlnt, bluetooth connection problems, a dozen apps starting by themselves, radio/reception issues. Its to the point its just not worth it to me. I dont like having to work on anything every day, and if I do, I feel something needs to change in the situation, if that is the case. Dont get me wrong, Im not slamming any developers, or their projects.
When I was younger, I was always the first to get one of the Celeron CPU's and OC the snot out of it. As I got older, I thought... why? Ill just spend and extra $20 and buy the faster CPU so it is more stable, and not have to mess with anything. Thats sort of how I feel now
