Capacitive buttons unresponsive - Captivate General

Okay - a little background first:
Dropped phone, broke a piece of the motherboard somehow but the phone was still semi useable, I could text even though the bottom buttons were unresponsive. Button savior saved me I don't actually talk on the phone much so I was surprised to find that the mic at the bottom didn't work either.. When my phone stopped charging, I know she was done in..
Anyway, motherboard comes in - swap out the damaged i896 mobo for the new i897 mobo. Everything works now, phone charges, very exciting...but the buttons at the bottom still don't work!! I'm not sure what the problem is, am I missing a connector or something?
I haven't unlocked the phone to my carrier yet, I am using a backup at the moment..
I've looked at every teardown on the internet and none really go in-depth at what is going on below the internal antenna...I'm not sure what part of the motherboard is responsible for the capacitive buttons - could I have a damaged cable or something as well? I don't want to bail on this yet because I just got the new motherboard, but I'd rather not have to use the soft key solution if I can.
I took a quick video and I could hear audio - can I assume that the bottom mic is working then?

If anyone could even offer just a little bit of insight for this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. I spent 3 hours scouring the internet before I posted...
Just wanted to update, unlocked the phone now - mic works as it should - I would say the phone is perfectly operational now except for the capacitive buttons..which as you can imagine is quite annoying.
Any suggestions as to where I go from here if I can't restore button functionality?

first root the device.
unlock before updating.
then follow the "how to flash ANY captivate rom from stock" sticky
install ICS AOKP. it has the on-screen nav button mod. then you wont miss the broken ones.

Just wanted to thank you, been meaning to come on here since I tried out your advice...the on-screen navigation in AOKP is brilliant. Don't even miss the loss of the buttons at all...phone works perfectly now!

Back button not functioning when cold

I just received a used nexus s i9020t and I've noticed that whenever my phone gets slightly cooler than say room temperature the hardware back button stops working correctly. When the phone is "cold" if I have BLD turned on and wait till the back light goes out I can press the back button when otherwise it wouldn't work if BLD is turned off. Does this make sense to anybody? I can try and clarify if it doesn't. I'm worried that its a hardware issue and that I'd have to get it fixed somehow. I just bought the phone and I'd rather now put more money towards it.

I'd like to mention that it is responsive when the phone is "warm". Its a really annoying thing and I'd like to get it figured out
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
I've not experienced your issue, so it might just have something to do with wiping and reflashing your current ROM (especially if you didnt wipe everything from GB to ICS). Though something to note: the "soft" buttons at the bottom use the touchscreen. You can witness this by going on a long web page and scrolling off the screen and down onto the soft keys, and notice that you'll be able to scroll left/right and up/down where the soft keys are.
This just means that if there is an issue with these, it falls back on either a software issue or touchscreen issue. Might help with diagnosing, ICS settings -> dev options has a good option to diagnose touchscreen problems.
I think the capacitive button mechanisms are different in the i9020 and i9023. I've had both and I've noticed that you can scroll around beyond the screen parameters with the i9023 but I cant with the i9020. Maybe somebody can correct me if I'm wrong. I've done some research and it sounds like I may have to pull the phone apart and try to take off some of the paint on the back button. Another suggestion that some people have is to slightly tighten the 6 screws on back of the phone under the back panel. I did that and its sorta helped. I can deal with it now but if it gets worse I may have to take the phone apart which is something I don't exactly wanna do. Btw I did wipe everything multiple times and restored from a backup and I didn't notice an improvement until I tightened the screws
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
You have a good point there, I assumed they were the same but they may be different, I've never experienced the i9020 to comment.
Good luck with your problem. You might try tightening only the screws near the back button and loosen the others a little, possibly giving it some leverage.

[Q] physical buttons, keyboard -- software problem?

I've got kind of a weird problem with a phone I took a chance on from eBay. Price was within my risk tolerance. The phone is in excellent physical condition. Seller said water damage, but it's pretty darned clean looking inside (I mean inside as in "I disassembled it").
Here's the major problem. None of the physical buttons, including the physical keyboard, respond at all once the phone boots up. Keyboard backlight is on, but caps/alt lights don't come on, I guess because those buttons don't work. Sliding out keyboard does not bring the phone to life.
I think this may be a software problem because:
(1) the power key does work to turn the phone on, but it seems to have no effect after the phone boots.
(2) I can get into hboot with power + volume down. Volume keys work to navigate hboot menus. But, the volume keys don't do anything once the phone is booted.
Phone is running stock 1.63. I also reflashed the phone with 1.63. That went normally but made no difference.
Ideas?
A little more info. After messing around with this for a while, I opted to install CWM 5.0.2.7. The volume up/down and power work in hboot, as I mentioned earlier, but they do not work in CWM recovery. (That really cuts into the usability of CWM )

I have a MT4GS with the EXACT same problem. Do you have any new information?
I'm about to take it apart and see what I can find. I do have a spare keyboard and some other parts I could try replacing to test it.

To be more specific - I have the same problem you listed in your first post - no buttons work except volume up/down and power in bootloader/fastboot. My phone has a locked bootloader without a custom recovery.

This issue is unique to the hardware issue we are having and does have anything to do with CMW - so you're safe with this issue!
My brother had this issue. Can't be fixed, some of the hardware is fried. To exposed to heat, sitting on it. Overcharging it.

Overcharging?
All hardware in the phone can be replaced. Hopefully it's not the main board. I'll open it up and try replacement parts and see if I can narrow the problem down to one specific thing. I'm hoping it's a faulty keyboard/stuck button that is causing it. I'll report back...

I don't know if you've had an MT4GS apart before (there are some pictures linked from the reference thread). There are 3 main pieces that comprise the mainboard ... a biggish bottom piece and two smaller top pieces. It would be interesting to which of the 3 pieces controls what. I've got some other MT4GS phones with various problems, and my plan was to so something similar ... swap pieces of the mainboard to see if I can narrow it down. (There are also some components in the complex flex cable that connects the mainboard to the display, etc. I don't know what that controls.)
Anyone figure this out yet? I got the same problem after charging via the USB port in a friend's Toyota Tundra. No hardware buttons work at all after boot or in CWM, but work fine in hboot, basically making the phone unusable. I've only had it for a month too...
EDIT: My further investigation reveals that if I hold down power and don't release until the phone is completely on, then all buttons will work just fine. After the phone starts up, if I slide out the keyboard, the front buttons and trackpad stop working, but power, camera, and hardware keyboard work. Kind of inconvenient, but still usable, especially if you can get on-screen buttons on your rom. Behavior in CWM is inconsistent, however, making flashing annoying.
That's good news for you about holding the power button down. Alas, didn't work for me. Anyone else?
It actually stopped working for me after 2 reboots...I thought it was consistent but I probably was just getting lucky. Now I'm stuck with a phone with no usable buttons. The annoying part is that the buttons seem to be working fine in HBOOT and when the phone is powered down, but don't work at all other times.

[SOLVED]Jelly Bean update broke power button?

Hi,
I recently received the OTA update for Jelly Bean, and I upgraded with no problems. However, now, my power button is only working when it wants to. If press it a bunch of times, it might turn on if I'm lucky, but most of the time it doesn't work. Right now, the only way for me to activate my screen is by connecting the charger, or asking someone to call me. The only way to turn off the screen is to wait for it to turn off! As you can imagine, I am quite PO'ed by this problem.
Has anyone run into a similar situation? It seems like a software issue to me because before the update, the button was working perfectly. Everything is stock, by the way. I was on CM9 before the update, but I flashed to stock ICS so that I could install the OTA update. I don't have the clockworkmod recovery anymore either.
Please help!
UPDATE:
I did a little hack to fix it, at least temporarily. Not sure how long it will last now, but at least it didn't cost me any $$$.
quoting myself from below:
I couldn't figure out how to root my phone without a power button because I'm a lazy guy and a work-around just isn't worth the trouble imo. So, instead, I decided to just open it up and see if I could fix it....and I did
First things first though:
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES TO YOUR PHONE THAT MAY ARISE FROM THIS METHOD!
It's not a permanent fix, more like a hack, but a hack is better than a work-around any day. What I did was find the button on the motherboard, and then 'pinch' it with a small pair of pliers. My original fear was that the problem lied elsewhere on the phone because the actual button seemed to be clicking properly, but it's pretty much impossible to figure out what else the button is connected to and fix it. Luckily, pinching it made it work! I guess that the clicking mechanism isn't the same thing as what makes the contact in the button. If you are going to try pinching it, try not to pinch too hard. I did it a little too hard, and now the button doesn't come out as much as it used to, so it doesn't feel as good as the volume buttons. I'm pretty sure you just need to squeeze it enough so that it gets squished enough to make contact when you press it. Squeezing too much could almost definitely result in destroyed button.
So if anyone has the problem on their phone, and doesn't feel like paying a bunch of money and waiting a long time for it to be fixed, you can try this method to fix it (probably temporarily). Only problem, I guess, would be that you'd have to be more careful with how you treat the power button from now on. If you are good with a soldering iron and working with tiny components, you can probably find a new button on the internet and replace it yourself.

Sounds like infamous broken power button, which our phones suffer from.
Check this for a workaround.
Happened to me too. I tried to comfort myself into thinking it was a software problem. If your bootloader is unlocked and you're rooted, boot into recovery using Quick Boot and try to flash another rom and see if it solves anything. But I'm not hopeful. Most likely your power button just decided to give way.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
For now, if you set the lock screen to 'none' you can turn the phone on if you press the volume buttons.
If you're using a custom rom, I'm sure there's a option to wake the device using volume button under the display settings.
If you're using cm10, you can add the sleep button to the power widgets.

Thanks for the reply guys. That's what I love about this forum: someone always has an answer to everything.
If the button actually broke I'm going to be very disappointed since I was trying to sell it to get a galaxy nexus. Horrible timing. :crying:
I Just found something weird. When I pull the battery, I can't power on the device with the power button, but if I connect the charger, then the button works. That is, it will power on when I press the button, not automatically when I connect the cable. Yes, the cable shows the charging icon, but it doesn't boot until I press the power button.
I still haven't flashed back to ICS to see if that fixed anything, but I'll post an update when I do.

[Q] G2X screen not visible

Afternoon all. I know the title might seem like a BSOD post but my situation is different. I've searched but can't come up with anything.
When I turn my phone on, it completes the boot but the screen never appears. How do I know it's on? Three things, the ROM I'm using, Eagle'sBlood I think, has an engine revving theme instead of standard Android chime. Second, the menu, home, back space and search buttons on the G2X body illuminate. Lastly, if I swipe in the area where I think the unlock icon should be, the phone unlocks. If I hold down the power button and wait for the shutdown notice, I can guess the 'Do You want to shut down' and 'confirm shut down' icons and the phone turns off.
I've tried removing the battery, SD card, sim card and rebooting in each variation but with no luck. The phone has been rooted for over a year and so I tried booting into CWM (powerbutton, down volume). I think I'm getting into CWM fully but without the ability to see the screen I can't navigate.
This started happening yesterday. I was listen to Pandora and using a GPS app to track my run. The battery died during. I plugged it in for several hours but haven't seen the screen display since.
Any suggestions? If this is a hardware issue I'll get a new phone but without being able to see the screen, I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem. Other than rooting and changing the ROM, the phone is stock. The issue I had before this is the battery icon doesn't display. It just shows a battery outline with a ?-mark inside. The battery level only shows when the phone is charging and powered off.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Really sounds like a dead lcd or maybe just the backlights. I don't really know how the backlight works on this phone but typically if there is video but no light you can put a flashlight onto the screen and barely make out the display around the flashlight. Either way it sounds like hardware.
Twitch - Thanks for the reply. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by backlights though. When the phone is on and the screen is not asleep I see lights around the edges but the screen itself is black. For my own knowledge is LCD and 'digitizer' synonymous? I saw another thread describing how to replace the digitizer for $60-75.
I'll try checking it with a flashlight when I get home.

I know there is an opinion thing but what is a good upgrade from the G2x for a non-hardcore user? I rooted and changed the ROM b/c you guys made it so easy to do, not b/c I was looking for the phone to do more than it already does. Up until this, and the battery display issue, and a wifi issue I forgot to mention, I've been happy with the G2x but there is no reason to spend $100+ repairing a 2+ year old phone that I pickup used off CList in Q1, 2012 if I can find something better on the used market for $200

Yeah I'm not too sure how these phones are set up, I have more experience with lcd monitors and such. But I think it is all in one piece on phones.
If you're looking to upgrade pretty much anything that came after the g2x likely has a lot more to offer in development. Good thing about this phone is everything is an upgrade. I have a samsung galaxy s 4g that's nearly 3 years old and single core but it runs 4.3 like a boss! Aside from GPS...
Flashlight didn't show any screen images. I think the next step is just trying to guess my way into debug mode and connect via uSB to my laptop and retrieve data before dumping the phone or trying to replace the lcd/digitizer. I saw an app mentioned in another post that should allow me to mirror my phones screen on a laptop. We'll see.

last chance
Last chance in case anyone has any great ideas. I'll be ordering a new LCD and digitizer (probably don't need both) but would prefer not to spend the coin if that isn't my problem. all suggestions welcome
Hmmm, this an odd and aggravating problem you have here lol. I've ran two versions of eaglesblood, their CM7 version on 2.3.4 and their ICS AOSP version on 4.0.4 and have never heard an engine revving in any boot animation so I'm not sure what rom you're running either. Have you tried the hard reboot? While the phone is on at the home screen (if you think you're there I guess) hold the power button and the volumeUP button and the phone will reboot. I've read on here from a more experienced user before that doing this clears or does something to the caches that makes for a more complete reboot or "reset" of the phone's condition. Try that and see what happens. The only other option I would try to take is to flash a new rom and before doing so doing a COMPLETE wipe (to include format /system) and full instillation of a new rom, gapps and kernel. Can you see any images if you boot into CWM when shining a light on the phone's screen?
Maybe I'm wrong about the ROM. The flash screen shows the android graphic in electric blue and a comet type animation zooms around. During the zooming, the sound is an engine revving. I was using the ROM for 2-3 months before this issue popped up so I doubt it is the cause just wanted to give those more knowledgeable than myself as much info as possible

That's my real problem, I can' t see anything! With the phone on, when I hit the power button and unlock the screen (guessing), the only illumination is the menu, home, back space and search buttons on the G2X body. I can tell from the haptic feedback once the phone is unlocked and I can occasionally guess the proper location to shutdown.
I tried the hard restart (Power, Up) but same result. I've downloaded an app called MobileGo for the computer that displays the phone screen but I can't get USB debugging turned on.
I have noticed another odd issue. With the phone turned on and the SIM card installed, when I call myself from a LAN line it goes straight to vmail. I know the SIM is good b/c I've been using an old nokia candy bar phone with the same SIM while troubleshooting. When re-inserting a SIM card, is there anything the user needs to do for the phone to recognize the SIM? Just wondering if this 'direct to vmail' is another sign of ............something.
Thanks
Sometimes when I take out the sim card my apn gets messed up. Ideally you'd just go into settings and load default apn and it'll work again.
But calling should work.
Seems like a busted screen from everything being described here.
Try connecting to a tv using hdmi... maybe the ROM would allow it to display. Worth a shot.

It's alive!!
My phone is alive, or at least it was.
I followed the directions on the youtube video I found to take the G2X apart and the first thing I noticed was the corrosion on LCD connector. I'd already purchased the LCD so instead of cleaning the old we just replaced it. The new screen worked, unfortunately I couldn't get a signal so we took it apart again to clean off corrosion on all the connectors. I'll let it sit for a few days to make sure everything is dry.
Don't be a fool like me, if you're going to do anything with your phone that might cause it to get wet, especially sweat, put it in a baggie or something. I'll post a follow-up if the thorough cleaning does any good.
I'm pulling for ya man, best of luck!

For anyone else that runs across this thread, unless the digitizer or LCD is physically damaged I'd disassemble the phone and check for corrosion before buying new parts. I used the new LCD but that b/c I'm not going through the trouble of returning a $16 item.
Wi-fi still doesn't seem to be working, which is odd. Wi-fi stopped working two months ago, it doesn't even show available networks, but worked for a few minutes when I originally replaced the LCD last weekend. Both antennae are connected but oh well. if I had to choose network vs wi-fi connectivity, I'll take network!
Thanks again for all the help

Nexus 5 boot loop

Hi,
My nexus 5 constantly reboots at the google logo. I think it is a power button problem.
I bought my nexus 5 from the google play store but I do not live in the US, so RMAing it would be difficult.
So is there any way I can fix it? I tried tapping on the power button on the mother board but it didn't help.
Thanks!

I have the same issue but I cannot get into recovery or anything else. There is not enough time before the phone reboots again. I have read of people having success but it seems rather rare. The strange thing is that I can press or tap (with luck) on the back of the phone, near the power button, and the phone will turn on. I am sure this is a hardware issue but I got mine from T-Mobile and my bootloader is unlocked and on Android 5.0. The bad thing is that I am now able to JUMP! and was looking at the Nexus 6... oh the humanity!
On an side note: When pressing on the back of the phone (see above) repeatedly I was able to get the phone to fully boot but once I quit it rebooted again. I have not been able to repeat this as of yet. I am leaving it on the charger and hoping that it will somehow right itself like other have reported... that is unless anyone has any suggestions.

I agree. I took the phone apart and messed with the components but nothing has changed. When I was able to get the phone to book all the way up "Power off" appeared as if I were pressing the button. I am not sure how to fix this.... I am sure that T-Mobile will not cover the warranty since it is unlocked.

The issue is that the phone reboots about every 2 seconds making it impossible to make a connection through ADB, recovery, or anything else. I did, however, find a solution/idea on a post by "nadrojcote":
"For the last week or so my power button/lock button has been intermittent, sometimes having to hit it 5 times or so to get the screen to unlock. Yesterday it all of a sudden stopped working and I couldn't unlock.
I am making this post to share my fix I found for the problem. Seeing how my phone is not under warranty because I have already replaced the screen, I took to tearing it apart and seeing what's going on. Hoping I could order a new power button, unfortunately the button is soldered onto the main board. Upon taking it apart I realized I had put a little shim in between the power button and the plastic button in the housing as a "rattle fix". This is what I am thinking caused the problem, this caused me to be putting too much pressure on the power button and caused it to over time break apart the back of the actual buttons metal housing on the main board. I removed the shim and it still did not work. I was going to take the main board and heat it at a low heat in the oven in hopes to reseat solder points, but before I did that I tried using a fine pair of needle nose pliers to crimp the back housing of the button back together. Luckily this worked. Unfortunately I do not have pictures, but if someone else has the same issue you should be able to see what I'm referring to by comparing the power button to the volume buttons on the mainboard, there is a metal housing around the actual button that is soldered to the main board, it has a slit down the back side of it that allows it to spread apart. The volume keys should be tight.
THE PROBLEM: Power/Lock button stops working
THE CAUSE(assumed): Nexus 5 power/lock button rattle fix
THE FIX: Using needle nose pliers to crimp the metal backing of the power button housing good and tight.
I hope this helps others out in the future as I'm sure I wont be the only one with this problem."
Now, I did not have a loose power button and so did not mod it. I did however take the phone apart and pull the board out. On the back of the board, opposite of the power switch, if an aluminum(?) case which can be removed. Under this there is another aluminum housing with a circle in the middle of it. The circle was somewhat bent touching the board parts below so I carefully bent the circle up. Next I gave the power switch a few "gentle" taps and pressed the casing around the switch to hopefully make it tighter as was recommended by "nadrojcote."
As you can tell from my word use, I am no where near an expert on anything electric BUT my phone is now working. I have not put it back together yet but I am in the process of restoring it to factory and locking the bootloader in case I need to send it in. I have sent some major prayers to God today! (If you do not believe in God you don't have to say anything negative about my post... just carry on)
This happens to me always to restart device
There is a solution to this?
What this fire button solution problem?
Who tried to replace power-on button to know is% 200 percent of the problem?
