I've been having a really annoying problem for a little over a week now and I'm out of guesses...
After running for a while my launcher (either ADW or LP) will lock up and make the phone unresponsive until I pull the battery let it come back up...It'll typically happen once or twice a day, and has happened with the stock .5 RUU rooted (using SenseUI, no LP or ADW), CM6 stable, NFXHero, Fresh, etc, so I'm leaning away from it being a ROM problem, but when it happens I can't unlock the phone from sleep. I booted the phone around 12:30am CST this morning and it just happened at 8:30am CST. When I slide to unlock it freezes, and I can hit end, try to wake it back up, and repeat the process and it continues to be unresponsive until the launcher FC's...the only thing I could figure to start with was ask in the IRC and Decad3nce recommended turning JIT off because over time it would bog down the phone, so I decided I would just flash CM6 and GAPPS and no tweaks, etc since no one else had a similar issue and still having the issue. I also limited what apps I installed to rule out something eating up CPU in the background (didn't install anything that stays running) I've ruled out CM6 being the problem seeing as it happens with any ROM I use and the only thing I can think of being the issue would be memory leak, and the only way I've come to that conclusion is since this is flash memory, I know it has a lifespan of reads/writes, and I'm wondering if I've just wiped and flashed too many different ROMs, etc...Also, I'm not using ANY homescreen widgets or themes, only a custom background. I don't have Autokiller installed or the battery tweak or ATK...just bare ROM.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is there any way I can troubleshoot it or do I just need to RUU the phone and take it to Sprint and try to get a replacement? I'm not due for an upgrade until Feb. so I can't just go swap out, plus I really like this phone and would like to keep it as long as possible...

+1-I am having the exact same issues with same setup although I do have AutoKiller and it is set to Optimum.
If you havent already try the Brainfunct kernal from this forum. I used to have random lockups and such before I used that..

Sorry, I should've mentioned that I DID try the BFS kernel (9/28 build) and it was after flashing kernels that I noticed it (mostly coincidence I'm sure) which is why I flashed straight CM6 to rule out the kernel
Funny as you mentioned it my phone rebooted once and then was non-responsive a second time after being untouched.. You must remember that these are RC1 roms and not final so there will be issues with each iteration.. Its the drawback of pushing our phones to the limit..

It happened with the stock .5 RUU ROM with the only modification being AndROOT...I RUU'd it back to .5 this morning and am going to ride it out untarnished to see if the problem replicates again. If so, I believe I will have successfully found it's a problem with the phone itself, and at that point take it to Sprint and see about paying the $35 for an exchange. I would do the OTA updates but if this shows its fixed I don't want to lose the ability to root, and I don't want to have to RUU back to .5 in order TO root. I was really hoping a dev who understands these ROM's better than I could chime in with some thoughts, but I guess I'll just have to keep test and tuning...I definitely appreciate these responses, though, and I'm happy I'm not the only one having this issue (though I'm still not happy it's happening lol)
not trying to be mean but your better off actually posting this in the right section and you might get some better answers. Q&A section is there for a reason.

Thanks...I figured sticking it in the Dev section would be more fitting since my first inclination was strictly a software problem, and not too sure how often dev's surf the other threads.

oh...devs go in there quite a bit. If not them then plenty of people who know the answers are in there.
I have the same issue I've used stock roms cm6 roms and tons of different kernels. I've noticed it moreso when its been asleep for a while it will wake up fine and then a couple minute later it will freeze up and force me to do a battery pull.

Gotcha...if you check out my post count I'm a n00b to these boards, but I appreciate you not blasting me like I've seen others have that happen to them (for not searching ,etc)...maybe a mod could move this for me so I don't clutter the boards?

Sounds like a garbage collection fail when coming from sleep, try using ondemand cpu governor for the time being.
Otherwise.. don't set your max freq too high, that's usually where lockups stem from.

Actually when I flashed CM6 last night with no tweaks I didn't even install SetCPU or any kernels...just the one that came with it capped at 691.2...no battery tweak or anything
I think there is a problem in the latest iteration of CM6 but again its not a promised fully stable build.. All I did since then was to flash the battery tweak over stock CM6 and poof problems were gone.. With the 9/22/10 it was the opposite and i had to flash the Brainfunct kernal instead of the battery tweak one..

Still a mystery to me as to why it's happening with more ROM's than just CM6 though...oh well, I'll see how stock .5 unrooted treats me this weekend, and if I have the same problem happen again, I know it's phone related and not to be blamed on a ROM (which I'd like to make clear -- I do NOT blame CM6, Fresh, or NFXHero for my issues. I know the dev's spent a TON of time building everything for us to have something we would otherwise NOT have, and my sole reason for this post is really to find out exactly what is wrong with my phone, not necessarily with a ROM, and most importantly to find out if I'm the only one experiencing these issues)...I do appreciate all the help and responses, and I'm thoroughly impressed with XDA and the responsiveness of everyone
Just in case anyone was interested at all, my phone completely bricked today (stock .5 running all weekend no issues) and the culprit is the touchscreen and all buttons but power stopped working...sprint's overnighting me a replacement so evidently something got too hot at some point or the like...thanks to all for the responses, and to those who had similar issues (not related to the ROM you're running) then keep an eye out for imminent failure lol
Please read this before you go crazy on me saying I haven't searched for this because I have. I've updated from every ROM of ICS thats dropped after reading up on them and the fastest and best working everyday ROM for ICS is BrainMaster's ICSv5 with Franco's Kernel 11/25. I haven't tried 11/26 but I've read the colors are much better on 25 and I believe it because its the best my screen has ever looked. SHARP!
So here's my issue. I want this as an everyday user, and I'm sure it can be. I just need to know how to set up the battery so that it lasts longer. I just restarted my phone and cleared all the battery info. Before I unplugged it at 6:30pm EST I had 91%. After very, very minor use (looked up the number for Home Depot and downloaded Amazon Market) I got back home at 9:30 and my battery was at 39%. Thats 60% in 3 hours. Thats terrible. How can I adjust the batter life? Can I use NSTools to do so or do I need to change code? I don't want to change the kernel completely because the colors truly are AMAZING with this version.
Please let me know, and thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Tula
Well, which app or function specifically is causing the drain? Did you look at the battery usage? Were you in an area with poor signal reception?
Before you trash a rom and kernel with a poorly conceived thread, try troubleshooting the problem.

For what it's worth, the only time I've gotten that kind of battery life is when a NFC process decided to start and run nonstop. No idea why it was running (particularly since I don't have Wallet configured), but since then I keep NFC disabled.
When that happened it was similar battery life - lost about 70% in 3 1/2 hours.
I never once trashed the ROM or the kernel? What are you talking about? Before reading into something for more than what it is you should take it for what it is. I don't know what the problem is, everyone else seems to be having a great amount of battery life. I'm asking on here, in this forum, because I figured someone (maybe a programmer who knows these things) can tell me how to "properly" config it. Idk what the deal is with it but I was looking for insight. I love the ROM and the kernel and I do believe I stated in the post that I wanted to keep it as a daily user. SO, either you can help me and teach me how to fix the problem or teach me to give you what info you need or do me a favor and don't waste my time. I'm looking for answers or suggestions. Not accusations and negativity.
"Poorly concieved thread!" Whats "poorly conceived" about it? The fact that I reached out on a FORUM and asked for HELP? Go comment on somebody else with that bullsh*t.
Reread your thread title; calling something "garbage" is not trashing it?
Reread and answer the questions asked in post #2. Nobody can do anything to help if you don't provide basic information or perform rudimentary problem-solving procedure.

Well man what i did with mine was calibrated the battery which means charge the battery completely then boot into recovery wipe battery stats then unplug and reboot then use it for 5 mins then charge fully again then unplug and drain completely till it shuts off on its own then fully charge again and it should be calibrated.. sounds like alot.. i kno lol but trust me it works and then if ur battery life doesnt extend after that (which it should) then i would look at what it is thats using the most matter (menu>settings>battery and go from there.. also make sure u have all the apps that will allow u to move to sd moved there it keeps them from running in the background and also make sure ur screen brightness is set low.. i took my auto brightness off and just turned it down just bright enough to see.. i know the colors looks fly like a bag of skittles when u got the brightness up wit franco kernel but it kills battery lol. hopefully that works for u pimpin and sorry for the novel lol just wanted to give u a few options to try.
JG & Freshie, thank you. And Braneless, you must be Braneless, because if YOU could read you'd see that my title says BATTERY LIFE is garbage. Not the ROM or the Kernel. BATTERY LIFE!

As far as the battery, I followed your instructions JG and also I started from the beginning and deleted all installs and reset to factory. I then installed each ROM from v1 all the way up and now EVERYTHING works and I got almost 2 hours out of my phone today and used 9%! WHOOHOOO!

I had this problem too, but in my case it was the Google Wallet app. It drained the my battery in like 4 hours. After uninstalling it, all went back to normal.
Now if you said battery life on a rom kernel combo was FANTASTIC.
What would that imply? Thanks guys etc.
You go through all the trouble to make the thread but not spend a couple seconds to check what actually used up the battery.
Omfg this thread title just made lol all over the place haha

Glad i can help
I'd recommend trying out Nexus MV 2.xx its the best daily driver so far. battery will make it through the day, i used it for a quite a while. Now trying out the alpha 13, but will go back to MV if this doesn't cut it. I tried BM too but didnt notice too much difference from Kwiboo and the earlier CM9 A 11.
my phone keeps restarting itself and i was wondering if anyone knew whats wrong, i have the valhalla-blackedition and my kernel is Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix
You may wanna go to the development section and remove gremlins(eg start from scratch) there is probably an issue with you CSC.
First things first - by default - always go into CWM and do three things. Wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions. Then reboot and let your phone sit untouched for around 10 minutes and see how your phone acts. Next uninstall your recently added apps and see if that could be the issue. One by one. It is even a good idea to wipe caches after doing so.
What you described happening is something you would have done to the phone. VB is solid. If you can't undo it with the steps I suggested - then start over as the last poster suggested.
But when you mess with your phone - keeps tabs what you do so that you can undo it and/or not do it again.
And if you can't undo it - be hesitant restoring backed up data from TB or CWM. If you must restore - restore data for apps one at a time and see if your phone acts up so you can try and figure out the problem.
i Wiped cache partition and wiped dalvik cache hopefully that will fix it
i wiped the cache and delvik cache and it was working good and then again out of nowhere it started to keep rebooting randomly, is my only option to use the gremlin remover?? or can i do something more basic to see if it will solve my problem
Bryan (the guy that created the kernel you're using) thinks he and FBis251 may have found the issue with the random reboots. Bryan said it might be a couple of days, though, before we see anything about it.
I updated to the rc3 version of the kernel in the hopes that it would get better but it actually got worse for me. I've done a few steps in the gremelin remover, have flashed & reflashed, but the problem persists. Hopefully Bryan & FB have nailed this thing down and those of us suffering the issue will have some relief
thanks for the reply stephen_w, i will wait till FB releases a new kernel
I would go with the gremlin remover its very easy to use and doesn't take a lot of time it really works it taking out any little problems with the phone.

Don't say that until you have tested it a few days. He released it less than 24 hours ago.
Bryan also stated in the OP for that kernel that it's still beta. There are/will be issues. He said somewhere in that thread that it seems what he and FB did to the kernel did not actually fix the random reboot issue, rather it prevents it from happening. They're working on it for us
I see the battery drain, too. I have to say though, it's better than having the random reboots. It's a "pick your poison" situation for the moment.

How about go back to V0.0.2d which had no issues at all. Just can't do nand backups or restores from it. Also no BLN. It's a solid kernel and it's easy enough to keep it and V2 on the sdcard to flash between. Use V2 when in need of backup or restores. Used V0.0.2d the rest of the time until the kernel issues are resolved. Just a thought.

Battery Drains can be controlled significantly by the User even though some kernels perform better than others. No need to have apps, wifi, etc constantly running unless needed. Useful info @ http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-cut-battery-drain-rooted-android/

When I see these kinds of posts I have to ask. Why did you even buy a SMARTphone to begin with?
If there is issues with battery drain they need to be addressed. Either in the OS or the apps causing the drain. Putting a bandaide (the battery saver apps) on only make the issues worse. Why? Because then nobody reports the problems because they are unaware of the problems because of the bandaide.
I am on AOKP B31 without fast charge enabled but seem to have a problem with the phone charging when off. If I plug it into a USB or wall charger, both samsung, the initial battery screen will come on but after the screen turns off it will not turn back on. I left it there for 30 min turned it on and it showed 50% more battery. We all know with a samsung that is not possible. Just want to see if others are having this issue, or a fix.
Thanks in advance.
I am sporadically having this issue as well- Samsung charger, AOKP b31. I will play with it over the weekend and see if I can figure anything out. For the moment I am not seeing this behavior, but initially after flashing I did...
I have not had this issue on any other THS or AOKP build and I have used a lot of them. The last one I was on was milestone 4 and it was fine.

Hmm, still doing it. Setting the Min CPU to 200MHz has not helped, as I have seen posted elsewhere. Charging screen turned off at some point, and when I booted up it was at 64% (from 7%). I'm not super worried about it though, seeing as how I flash like crazy and will not be on Build 31 for any length of time. If I get this on other builds or other Roms I will update again.
Edit: Build 32 is out, so I am going to flash and see if that resolves the issue. I am wondering is this is a kernel issue, as the Glitch for Build 31 was the first time I had switched from Glitch version 14 beta 6. Maybe I'll try the Semaphore kernel if the issue remains.
I flashed 32 and it still is the same issue. Also tried the min CPU increase but nothing. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. My concern is that it will continue to charge after 100%.

read the first post of AOKP. report bugs where it tells you to. they will not look here, or will they care if they do look here, if you do not follow their instructions for reporting bugs.
look to see if the bug exists, and if it is there, click the STAR to vote for the issue as that page says to do.
I have read the OP but I did not want to flood the bug tracker if it was a problem already found or known. I did not have the 10 posts needed to post in the development section, so I figured start this to see if anyone had an issue. I know how much everyone hates the development thread being diluted with dumb question after question. I did report it on the bug reporter site.
P.S. - Thanks for your essentials mod, makes everything much easier.
Just wonder - will disable fast charge help?
I have not enabled fast charge. I thought that only effects charging when on USB? I could be wrong though.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
I have been testing with both i897 and i9000 bootloaders. This may be a Glitch kernel issue, as I have flashed Semaphore ICS kernel 1.0.0 and have not seen this. Looks like there is already a bug reported in the AOKP page. Not a huge concern though, I think, because the phone seems to charge nevertheless.
Has anyone else had their Android OS showing as a higher than normal battery usage since updating to JB? I updated Friday and it's been around 16% ever since, today it has 35 minutes of awake time longer than screen on..
I haven't noticed it since the jb update, but it did happen to me on ICS quite a bit. A simple reboot of the phone seemed to fix it. At least worth a shot.

I have not seen any issue yet.
I've noticed a huge battery drain with JB. I'm experimenting with a few different fixes.
The one I've noticed the biggest difference with is turning off Google Now. This was KILLING my battery. I really won't know how much this fixes the problem until a full day of work.
I've also noticed that just with using my phone for a few minutes, it gets really hot. (Back, lower right)
(I've even did a wipe and reload trying to resolve these issues but nothing has changed.)
I read on another thread that if you updated using the "non data wipe" version of the JB ROM, that this is one of the side effects.
Try installing JB fresh with everything wiped,
I had the huge battery drain after JB update, ended up disabling couple of google apps tweaking couple of location/gps settings and now I'm back to about 1% drain per hour when phone is in idle/deep sleep. For some reason either the update or one of the apps was keeping the phone constantly awake so i had to pull the battery/restart couple of times. Also for some reason the keep screen on while charging was on in the developer options, i think that's why the phone took forever to charge first time after the update. Hope this will be of some help to you guys, gl!
Better Battery Stats, which is available on xda, is a recommended app to determine which apps are causing battery draining issues. From how I use it, unplugging from the charger to when your phone dies, it is most accurate in detailing what's been using battery the most but it works best when the phone is idle. The few times I've had Android OS or Android System taking up battery, it helped me detail which app was the cause however it takes a few hours to properly identify battery draining apps which is expected.
