ebook readers - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Moon reader is my favorite, has lots of settings, and the paid version will read to you using text to speech. If you do it right you don't need a tablet or an ebook reader. The 4g screen works just fine.
But there's a trick you need for commercial e-books. I found that the commercial e-readers like BN-Nook (free) were designed for tablets and will put useless margins around the text that you can't get rid of. This is fine for tablets but not a 4g as you end up with about a paragraph per screen. Moon Reader will get rid of the margins but won't read copy-protected ebooks like the ones you can buy on line.
There is a free program called Calibre, however available for PC, Mac, and Linux. This program will strip the copy protection so you can read the ebooks on something like Moon Reader without those margins eating up screen space. It works great.
There are a lot of free e-books around if you don't mind older stuff.

I'm gonna throw out a link for my favorite eBook reader (since I also use Calibre. AWESOME tool)
Aldiko:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aldiko.android
Aldiko is a free, awesome eBook reader. I convert most of my eBooks to epub format which works all over the place and Aldiko can read perfectly. I just wish they had support for offline dictionaries but that's asking for a lot. iBooks on my iPad spoiled me in that regard since Apple includes the Oxford dictionaries on OS X and on their iOS devices.

ebook reader

Hey I am looking for a good ebook reader. Basically I have tons of ebooks in txt format (from projekt gutenberg) and some pdf ones. Right now I am using a purchased version of Repligo to convert it and view it on my pda, the viewer is really really nice... now I want to switch to an macbook and wanted to ask the comunity if there's a better way like an comfortable txt viewer? I'm aware of XPDF for PDF files which is nice but kind of not that comfortable to read books
THX in advance
M
uBook was a very good I used to use, but I just convert the txt or html files into Microsoft LIT format now and use their reader.
Not sure if uBook is still free though.

[Q] Best PDF and ebook readers for the Tab?

I interested in getting a Tab and my primary use for it will be reading documents and books. What are the best apps for the following formats:
PDF
epub
cbr/cbz
chm
djvu
I have tried quite a few of the free ones and so far they all suck for one reason or another.
If there is a good pay one, I would not be averse to giving it the ol' 24 hour test.
Tab comes with think free office app. Best pdf reader on android. For comics/cbr/zip use acv (android comic viewer). For books, kindle, nook, aldiko, there are loads
For ebooks, I really like fbreader. kindle and nook have really big fonts that I can't seem to shrink enough. fbreader doesn't have a store, but it can access calibre if you have it set up for opds.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking into them. One format I forgot to mention is HTML. Is it better to convert that to a different format or search for a reader (or browser) for it?
I use ezpdf for my ebook reading. My current favourate with auto crop feature.
Ita difficult finding a good pdf reader. anyone tried good reader on the ipad? its a great pdf manager. Im going to email them to see if they are working on an android version. Adobe reader is good but slow. Others just feel cheap.

I work for a large newspaper company in the UK so I have access to hundreds of papers in PDF format, each day I grab my local one which is usually over 40 pages and around 120Mb in size.
The ONLY app which doesn't crash at the size of the PDF is the free office app that came with the Tab, pinch zoom or double tapping is quick & smooth and moving from one page to the next is seamless
the Adobe app never even opens the first page!
I use the built-in ebook reader, and could bend it to my will, also it supports epub
With a well setup calibre adding new books is easy as 1-2-3

Exactly, the ThinkFree office pdf reader is teh BEST pdf reader on android. It renders pages with no lag, ayman you can't have tried this if you think its not adequate, try it.

Have you tried ezPDF ? It works brilliantly on my Tab, it is great for reading technical documents in column mode (with double-tap gestures, pinch/stretch zoom, and horizontal scroll lock). The text-flow view is pretty handy too. It is fast, regularly updated...well worth the purchase
for ebook reading, i use aldiko. its on the market.
I use think free apps and Adobe pdf reader. Adobe pdf reader for android is free from the market.
Sent from GalaxyTab using XDA apps.
For PDFs, ezPDF has by far the best features.
It remembers the page, it remembers the zoom, and it even can auto-zoom into columns and jump to the next column. It also can lock the horizontal position.
Unfortunately it does not have the best rendering quality, text does not look as sharp as with adobe's reader.
Adobe's is fine with the best rendering quality but still lacks features. Not even remembering the page-number is fully implemented.
thinkoffice is just a basic fast pdf-viewer that can not even keep the zoom-level.
Bloody sick of Thinkfree Office - it doesn't remember the zoom level across the document! I need to double tap repeatedly for each page to make the document zoom to page width. Going to try EZ PDF and sees how it turns out.
Ezpdf is the best android PDF reader period..

Another vote for ezpdf. They recently added annotation tools launching this pdf viewer back to the top of the stack for me.

That doesn't really answer his question. No, your tab SHOULDN'T have a reader app. Or rather, it SHOULD - but T-Mobile chose to remove the reader apps. If you search around on the forums you can find APKs for the missing components, but I haven't found them to be completely bug-free. Laputa is a nice eReader. At least, it's my favorite.
My korean version has not only leaders hub, but also T store book and T store comic preinstalled and it was awesome..... Both ment to be korean online bookstore's kindle app but also works as a great reader. not support many features like moon+ reader but works stable. UI was best I ever seen
You were looking at reviews of the non-us version, In the US they strip all the good apps, and load our devices with bloatware.
So where could we find an installable version of the Samsung eBook ereader?
Kermit
It wont work unless you flash the euro software onto it. Already tried and was really disappointed. They advertise the reader on US TV and they don't even include it!

using the Transformer as an ereader device with Calibre

i was REALLY disappointed to see that the TF doesn't connect as a mass storage device one of the main reasons i purchased it was to use as an ereader (previously had the Sony Reader which was completely awesome)...i naively thought a tablet could run rings around an ereader
i have a large library which i manage on PC using Calibre, and every book (over 700) has customised tags which is how i navigate it...the first problem was that Calibre could not recognise the TF in MTP mode, the second was finding an ereader app that suited me, but THEN i found that all apps i tried either couldn't read my tags and the Calibre metadata, or (which is much much worse) they add a bunch of nonsense crap tags when importing books
i'm at my wits end! it really shouldn't be this difficult!
this is what i have come up with - if you have any other options, please let me know (and after trying, but failing, to find online solutions, i thought i'd list my half-arsed solution here)
EREADER APP
i chose Aldiko as my ereader app because it supports dual-page landscape view, epub, and pdf (but in single page view only)...i prefer the readability of Kindle app (but it has no dual page view), and i prefer the interface of Mantano (but you can't change the margin sizes and it can't connect to my Calibre server - though i do have my library in Dropbox, the interface of the online Calibre server has the ability to sort by tags)
SYNC
again, because it is an MTP device when connected to PC, none of my auto-sync PC programs will recognise it...for wifi syncing with my Calibre database when i am at home i chose WifiSyncr...it has only 1-way sync (which is what i want as i don't want my library changed by my tablet!)...the downside is that it doesn't 'sync' only changed files, it just copies everything over to the tablet every time you connect (around 1GB for me), but until i find something else this will have to do (i can always just unplug and use the usb/power cable, but i'm lazy)
ACCESS TO CALIBRE LIBRARY
i set up my Calibre server with a no-ip http address, and Aldiko connects to this flawlessly
USAGE
when i first used the 'import' function within Aldiko (or maybe it was one of the other ereader apps i tried), my ebook folder structure had been changed (!!!) with things like new folders created for authors' names - a consequence of the apps not reading the Calibre metadata and just using ****tycrapballs metadata info from some internet hell dimension...i found LegerCalibre, which is 100% perfection on reading my Calibre tags and metadata database - but that's all it does, it's not an ereader, just an interface
so this is what i'm left with:
-wifi sync my Calibre library when changes are made
-use Leger Calibre to navigate local library on tablet and open books using Aldiko
-use Aldiko to read books - but not to manage them, and ignore any Aldiko sort options
-use Aldiko to navigate Calibre server (if i ever need to)
the only other option i can see at this stage is to go out and buy the new Sony Reader and let the TF rot in the corner
addendum: the Asus MyLibrary app just craps itself, and the Asus Sync program only allows syncing of contacts and calendar - who the.f still does this!!!
no one? was my post too long? how about:
how do i use Calibre with the TF?
I use Calibre and cool reader.
Cool reader does epub and kindle format as well as most other formats. I don't know about tags and things.
I have a pretty big library on a 32 gig sd card, which I stick in the pc to transfer books.
It sounds cool what you're trying to do! I wait with bated breath...
Give cool reader a try. it does good 2 page landscape and is very flexible with options.
I'm still struggling with basic conversions of PDF and swapping authors with titles across about 10,000 books, but I'll have a quick look at tags.
I would suggest that you visit www.mobileread.com, the developer of Calibre is actve there )there is a specific sub-forum dedicated to Calibre) and he is very forthcoming and helpful to those that have bought a paid version.

(i didn't receive a notification of your reply!)
i did end up going with CoolReader in the end, and like you just using my SD card in a usb device so Calibre can access it directly
CoolReader works with opds online catalogues and Calibre has this capability...keeping your library in a Dropbox public folder you can use CoolReader to directly access it...it's pretty cool...let me know if you want more info on it

I'm also looking for the best ebook reader.
I'm now using Moon+ Reader Pro. It's good and full of options, but I'd like to try some other (hopefully better) reader.
In my case it's important that the reader supports at least both the PDF and EPUB formats. A plus for the GNote 10.1 would be the possibility to make handwritten annotations with the SPen.
Considering the apps previously suggested here are my notes and comparisons. I've not included Cool Reader and iReader as I think they don't support PDFs.
Moon+ Reader Pro [GP Average rating: 4.7]
from the GP app page: "New designed book reader with powerful controls & full functions, supports epub, pdf, mobi, chm, cbr, cbz, umd, fb2, txt, html, rar, zip or OPDS formats".
it's possible to annotate (handwriting) in pdfs but not in epubs (epubs can take typed notes tough).
price for the full app is €3.80.
Mantano Ebook Reader Premium [GP Average rating: 4.1]
from the GP app page: "Read, annotate, listen to any EPUB 2 or PDF ebook with the most powerful Android ebook reader compatible with the Adobe DRM".
it seems it's possible to annotate (handwriting) both pdfs and epubs (from the GP app page: "Create text and freehand notes, attached to a page, to a highlight, or standalone")
price for the full app is €8.36 (!).
Aldiko Book Reader Premium [GP Average rating: 4.2]
from the GP app page:"Support EPUB, PDF formats as well as Adobe DRM encrypted eBooks".
it seems it's not possible to make handwritten annotation but jsut typed one in both pdfs and epubs (in the app's description is said that: "You can create your own bookmarks, notes and highlight anywhere in the book" but there's no explicit mention to handwritten notes).
price for the full app is €2.49.
My conclusion
I'm considering trying out Mantano Ebook Reader Premium, even if some of its user's reviews are not so much positive.
Any further comment or advice?

go with mantano.. as i've said i use it on my tabs.. for phones i recommend aldiko..
and i never had any crashes with mantano.. unlike what you see in GP feedbacks.. only negative is it's a little pricey..

EDIT: you can always try the free versions before purchasing..
I would also recommend Aldiko, I use it for years now. It reads everything :good:

thanks guys!
I'm an avid book reader and have been using Kindles now for 3-4 years.
After getting my Samsung Note 10.1 three weeks I decided to test the three main ereader apps – Aldiko, FBReader & Moon + Reader. I ended up buying the 'pro' versions of Aldiko and Moon.
I read several books on all of them and have now gone back to my Kindle as none of the readers accurately rendered the books. Sometimes italics didn't show, other times suddenly a chapter would appear in bold. The thing is the books appeared to be rendered ok until I looked at them in the various ereaders and my Kindle and noticed the differences. If I had only looked at them in just one reader, I would never have picked up the problems.
In one book all the flashbacks to earlier years were in italics. None of the readers rendered this correctly which made the story hard to follow.
Big disappointment but the search will continue.

That sounds like some great feedback that would be very useful to the developers of the products you tried! If you haven't already, please take the time to let them know which book(s) you tested and what the issues were so that they can improve their software.

I have done that (twice now to FBReader) including attachments showing the various problems but I haven't heard back from any of them.
Mantano Ebook Reader Premium is the best for me
Mantano reader's annotation tools
Finally I've decided to go for Mantano Reader Premium.
After some time spent learning its UI I must say that's a very good reader program for epub and pdf.
The Interface, the workflow and the bookshelf organization is rational and well designed (I'd say better than that of Moon+ Reader Pro). So, I don't regret having spent €8.36 for it.
Anyway, since I had great expectations about its annotation functions, I must say that I've been a little disappointed to see that the notes added to a pdf or a epub file are not directly visible upon reading/browsing/reviewing a book but can only be activated and accessed by clicking on a small icon placed on the top pf the page.
That makes, for me, the purpose of annotation (especially drawn notes and marks but also typed notes) almost useless.
Furthermore I noticed that there's no eraser and no undo/redo tool in the draw note editor.
I've asked for these features to be considered as a future improvement to the app in the Mantano's support web page.
(...I'll come back if I receive some feedback from the deveopers)
Honestly, I do not use any of the above mentioned anymore. I switched to EasyPDFReader and never looked back. It says it reads epub too but I have not tested that yet. Give it a try

I only found an easypdfreader for Windows (but here we are talking about Android apps...)
Can you share a link or give us the exact app name and/or the market where it is available?
I used moon reader pro since gb time for it text to speed for chinese user. But ics no more support for it. So I used vbook pro for listening my chinese ebooks.
