[Q] Upgrading Phone: WP7.5 or Android ICS - General Questions and Answers

Hey Guys,
I had always been a person that thought of a phone as something you use to call people, as long as it served that purpose it was fine; until I bought my first Android, since then I have been actively flashing my phone and would love to get into development. Unfortunately, recently, my Nexus S was stolen. I am now faced with the issue of buying a new phone.
I enjoy the customizability of a rooted android, but I also love the GUI of WP7. I am torn between a Galaxy S2/Galaxy Nexus and a Lumia 800. Do WP7's benefits outweigh the community of developers behind the android phones.
Just need some opinions.
Cheers.

Galaxy S2/Galaxy Nexus and a Lumia 800, I would prob go with the Galaxy Nexus, not sure about Win phone

Buy a htc hd2
Benefits :-
1. You dont have to spend much.
2. With this you can enjoy both wp7 and android 4.0
3. Both the roms are available and the best part, you can dual boot them.

The HD2 has been a consideration too, it seems a little old though. I am a sucker for hardware. I will have a look at the HD2 forum, see how they go.

I was hoping that you will hit thnks. But its ok

Droid Milestone vs HTC Inspire 4G

Am wanting to upgrade from the HTC Aria and so far these two seem like the best choices to me.

Which seems like the best choice?

The inspire is newer and much better so i would go for that one ;3
Well the only reason I'm considering the Milestone is because of the physical keyboard. I have had all kinds of problems out of the virtual keyboard on the aria

+1 - I bought an Inspire 4G and am just so impressed with it. Just an outstanding phone in all manners. It looks beautiful. It feels beautiful. It works beautiful. The OS (Android 2.2.1 overlayed with HTC Sense 2.0) is just so supremely smooth, responsive, fast. But I saw mine get smoother, quicker and cleaner running after a couple days break-in period.
Regarding the Droid, I would highly recommend going with the Inspire instead. The Droid, in my opinion from handling them at Verizon, just can't compare to the pure and supreme smoothness of the Inspire from AT&T. There is so much to love about the Inspire. The skins are just a pure excellent feature and devs here at XDA create some good ones as well as the available official ones. And if you do go with the Inspire and want the majority of the available skins, I can upload all of the one I gathered here at XDA for you. I thing I have like 30 or 40 skins in apk form...meaning you just install them like any normal app.
You also get the HTCSense.com phone finder for the Inspire and it works well. You get access to the HTC hub and "Likes". HTC is a real and huge player in the smartphone market and they do make the best phones, in my opinion.
Good luck to you with whatever you choose.
the milestone 2 is the one boooyyyy
Okay. Let's add another perspective to this. I am also now considering switching back to an iPhone, or getting the Desire Z or the HTC Sensation. Opinions?
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
i think milestone 2 (or hd2) is best for you
If you're willing to spend the extra cash for the Sensation I'd say go for it. Latest and greatest sense 3.0 and all kinds of shiny stuff you may or may not need
Seriously though, it's the most recent and most technologically advanced out of the whole lot here.
I'd probably wait for the Sensation. The Desire Z looks nice if you really want a keyboard, but it's super overpriced IMO. (You have to import it in the US, I think).
Please, please, please, do not buy an iPhone right now lol. The new one will probably be out in six months.
If you have to buy something right now, I'd buy in this order:
1. Inspire
2. Desire Z
3. iPhone
4. Milestone 2 (is there even a compatible version of this for the US?)
i think milestone 2 is better
because it looks really cool
Milestone - I had the D1 since day one basically, and moving to a new phone was a really hard decision because I love having a physical keyboard...
However my need for faster proc trumped the need for a physical keyboard... I decided to go with the Thunderbolt... So far I am not missing the physical keyboard too much as the HTC IME works really well.
Which Sense phones include Swype? I'd take that over a physical keyboard.
Lets have 1 last revival of this thread. Hd2 or one of at&t's windows phone 7 devices?

I'd avoid the HD2 if you're planning on using it with AT&T. You'd need the Telstra version--people seem to think it's worth twice as much as the T-Mobile US. Also, if you're using it as your main phone, keep in mind that the only OS it officially runs is Windows Mobile 6.whatever. Expect to tinker and experience bugs if you're going to run Android or WP7. It's a really cool project phone, but I wouldn't use it as a main device.
If you want WP7 and AT&T, I'd wait for the HD7S or whatever it's called. Or maybe import an AT&T-compatible device (Mozart maybe?). AT&T's current offerings seem pretty "blah" to me.
EDIT: In summary, based on price and availability, I'd go with the HTC Inspire...
Well I'm a true tinkerer (is that a word?) And everything I get, I think,"lets hack it in whatever way possible." I am completely used to experiencing bugs. But the only phone I consider from at&t is the inspire, atrix, or the samsung focus (not including the iphone) I only look at the hd2 because of being able to hack and change in so many ways. that's like heaven to me.

The iPhone would be the most reliable choice. If it were me and I was making the choice of the phones you mentioned, I would go with the iPhone.

But now that you have included the Samsung Focus, you really can't go wrong with that one, either.
With the iphone I know what I'm getting into because I had an iphone for 3 years. I'm only hesitant to do windows phone 7 because I'm not too friendly with my aria when I thought I would be.

WP7 is actually Microsoft's version of an iPhone. It is smoother, cleaner and more elegant. Things work more conveniently also. So far, after the NoDo/Samsung firmware update, mine has been perfect. Amazing reliability. Mine is 24GB, but adding a 32GB card would give you 40GB of storage. Something iPhone doesn't yet offer. But WP7 currently lacks much of the features other systems have which are supposed to be added in the upcoming Mango update sometime around the end of the year.
Yeah, the more I have my Focus, the happier I get. But if you do go with a Focus...it has 8GB internal memory...and want to add a card, I recommend using a class 4 or class 6 card.
Right now I have a class 4 card but it's pretty slow. But I've also considered the htc surround due to me being such a music lover. Even the quantum for it's keyboard.

What phone to get?

I am looking to get a new phone (pay and go) and after having a extensive play with my house mates Galaxy S I have decided I want some form of Android phone.
I don't have all that much to spend, Something around the £100 mark.
Would be using the phone for things like Facebook, slight web browsing for time to time and a few games like Angry birds and cube runner oh and World of warcraft mobile authenticator.
I have got two phones in mind but am unsure of what device would better suit my needs.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo
Or
HTC Wildfire
Or
Sony Ericsson Xperia X8
Any advice or personal experience with these phones would be much appreciated.
I used to have a wildfire, it's great but the screen Res is so low that vids look crap! I would go for the wildfire s, it's slightly more expensive but it's worth it.

£100 is about my absolute limit but if I could afford the Nexus s I would go for it but I just cant afford it. but the other three phones I listed I can get for £99
Check out the orange San Francisco. Can root and install cyanogenmod 7. Costs 99.99. Nice screen for the price. Unfortunately locked to orange if you're on another network already though...

I bought the San Francisco after my HD2 was broken for the x'th time.
Now that I have it for over a week I am absolutely in love with it.
For the price it is a brilliant device.
It has it downsides but even expensive phones have those.
Any Android but the Samsung Gaxaxy S is great
Well, my favorite cell company it's HTC. I saw the Sensation in action and i felt in love. But I see what's new on HTC and a beatiful phones come soon...like HTC EVO 3. Also samsung have a good phones too. But these are more difficult to root and install new roms, i think.
So I wait for a new sorprise of HTC for now.
I have the HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile 6.5
I can't get the Android OS on it, keeps failing to install
HD2
HD2 all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Legend is a great phone. Pretty much the same phone as the Wildfire S, but I guess it's cheaper.

Why should i decide to stay with one s?

Hello everyone, I would like to ask you a couple of questions. HTC ONE S is a beautiful phone, fast, the best to the touch and with a processor speed but ... But in the period where they are baked increasingly cheap quad core and even dual core as the new pro s4 are faster. In addition there is the problem that is not particularly supported by Community, stay with One S?
Express your thoughts thanks
If you want a dull vanilla android then yes ! But I would stay with one s or maybe shift to one x , one x+ or Samsung galaxy s3 ,try using a aokp/aosp Rom that's how a nexus device is,, very plain !! , if you got money to spent go buy some other quad cores like one x and sgs3 , people go with HTC and Samsung coz of their innovative ui ( sense for HTC and touchwiz for Samsung) . Android has only be rocking because of Samsung HTC and Sony , nexus devices are cheaper but not that enjoyable ,

I would say opposite of what this guy says. Samsung and HTC throw crappy interfaces over stock android making it slower and only causing you to not get the updated operating system timely on your phone. Vanilla android is best and I'm planning to buy nexus 4 as soon as it's out. One decent reason to stick with one s is that you don't have money to throw around buying the latest and greatest phone.

Is the phone unable to do something that you need it to do? Are a few more megaflipflops of processing power really going to make your life better?
If the answer to either of these questions is yes then buy another phone.
Trendy
Trend!!!
People wants to be trendy. Mostly iPhone users. Do not be like them.
As @Troute said: Is the phone unable to do something that you need it to do?
I find support pretty decent depending on what you're looking for. There's a good variety of different ROMs available to suit your tastes. Even though there's faster phones available now, it really depends on what you need to make your phone work for you. If you don't notice any issues with lag, performance is good, and battery life is good then I think things should be ok?

I spent $285 on this phone I think I got a solid deal. Definitely don't get an iphone anywhere near retail value. If I had to get a phone right now I would buy the Nexus 4.
Well as it stands right now the nexus 4 is gonna be strictly worst than our phone cuz LG made it. Anyone one else confused on that?
I say go for a onex+ or a s3. imma skip out on this round of smartphones though cuz our one s is one of the top phones out. Everytime i pull it out ppl are like OMG what phone is that. pretty much once the wow factor is gone its time for an upgrade lol
I mainly need a really powerful camera to replace compact digital camera for daily use, I don't want to take two devices go out. So, I will stay with One S and not to go with N4 like everyone else here.
I will probably buy a new phone later when HTC or Sony introduces their new camera sensor. HTC is going to roll out 5" 1080 J Butterfly with 8M cam in Dec on Japan, wanna see if the sensor get improved and I might get one.

LG is guilty of terrible software, but with the Nexus 4 that's not an issue. The hardware of the Nexus 4 is patchwork. On one hand you have the quad core S4 pro, on the other you're stuck with only 12gb of accessible space. On one hand you have an amazing screen, on the other the battery life sucks and can't be upgraded. You have to decide what you can tolerate to decide if a Nexus is for you. I love AOSP, but HATE limited storage. I love the resolution, but HATE the battery life. So I won't be getting a Nexus 4.

I may get the nexus 4 it will have a lot of devs working on it and I could just flash a sense rom onto the phone because I like sense. And I really want nfc
It's only 280 pound for 16gb and it beats the GS3 in specs

[Q] Which phone should i get?

hello there!
sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i was wondering if you guys could help me choose.
im getting a new phone for my birthday but i dont know what to get, my price range is around £200 give or take
at the moment i am looking at:
HTC 8S
HTC Desire X
now im upgrading from a Samsung Monte (lol) but i do have a little experience with android and IOS but not windows phone 8. now i mainly will be using it for a phone and listening to music and movies. but i do play a few games (Usually the bigger games too).
Off course htc 8X

its the 8S not the 8X. i would buy the 8X if u could tho
both phones are good but the main question is...what os will be more suitable for you.I suggest go for a "test drive" in your nearest shop and play with a win 8 phone. But my suggestion is to try and find a nokia win phone.nokia music is for you and it is free too for a year i think.
Andoid is more fun but Win 8 is more "smooth" and "easy"
I bought a Galaxy SII a couple of months ago, and it's the best phone I've ever had. I realize the SIII is better, but the SII does everything I need.
Both phones are supposedly quite good.
I guess it'll come down to what ecosystem you prefer.
I haven't seen too much on the Desire X, but I would warn you that while the 8S is a decent low-end handset it does come with a meagre 4GB storage on-board, so make sure you get a nice roomy MicroSD card to go with it.
There is a significant lack of apps on windows OS. And I mean a massive lack, with most big games etc that have been on apple and android for ages not on there at all.

Go for an original galaxy note and it will be the only electronic device in your hand the whole day ))

Desire X its much better from 8S for me,but the choice its yours.
I would definitely recommend Samsung Galaxy s3,best phone I've ever had. With root and custom rom of course!
note 2 ! note 2 ! note 2 !
i think HTC 8S is better.
Samsung Galaxy S2 ....best smartphone today :victory:
I'd go with the Desire X - No love for windows phones as I don't like the interface.
Plus, sense is awesome.
HTC 8S comes with window 8 and HTC Desire X comes with 4.0.4 android operating system except to most of the features are same. I think you should go with HTC Desire X.
Galaxy s iii. I got one with a extended battery 4300 Hyperion. 32 gig sandisk card. Att has them for 29.99 right now. I got mine in Oct for 49.99. I argued and got it rebated back and taken off next bill. Not a refurb either. I like nexus but no ext card. If your going to root then not much benefit if a nexus. Running 4.2 just as it is anyways.

I'm junior too, damn...
I bought because of freedom for modding.

I originally moved from an iPhone 5, to an HTC One X. I loved the hardware, but HATED the software, AND getting root was taking a while. Then, I switched to a Nexus 4 and loved stock Android!
Now I have a Samsung S4 in CM10.2. I AM LOVING IT!

I get grief from dozens of iphone users around me daily so I've gotten used to this.
I think half of it is just having it from the start, so I am used to it. (But I don't say that). I think Widgets, customization are what keep me coming back. And my life is completely integrated with the google suite of products, so having that so seemless is a huge boon to me.
Bought an android because I've been using Linux for 18 years. Dropped micro**** 15 years ago, and will not look back. Since I dropped micro****, I won't buy into i****. Simple as that

Honestly? The big screens. And the free apps.
I really don't have much use for visual customizations, and iPhones don't need to be overclocked to play games, so long as you have a newer one.
Because it's Open Source. And because they sell user experience, not fancy brand name like Apple does!
Just for experimentation..!!
All my life i have been using symbian devices, and still do. Infact my primary mobile happens to be a nokia 5233 & the second one is an android (celkon A200).
I absolutely love the simplicity of the Symbian devices, and bought an android just for experimentation, college projects and the sheer fun of customising it...

And my nokia only had bugs, turned off without reason, touchscreen didn't respond well and it was slooow!

I bought android phones because its very customizeable.
I'll be making the switch in a couple weeks. List of my devices and where I am now.
Droid X, Thunderbolt, iPhone 4, iPhone 5 Razr Maxx HD and back to iPhone 4.
iPhone 4 has been great and dependable with amazing battery life. But Android is coming on stronger than ever and has me wanting the change for good. Plus, the looks of iOS 7 is ugly and new features seem outdated.
I bought an android phone as it is highly customisable and gives you freedom to mod which you dont get on any other os.
I've wanted to make the switch for a while now. After my iPhone's screen (finally) busted after 4 years of use, I decided to use the opportunity to switch. iOS just made me feel too locked in, even jailbroken (which was always quite a pain - getting the right OS version, the right tools, making sure you don't update baseband - ugh), and I really hated the fact that the only way to sync it is via iTunes - terrible for a person like me, who spends most of their time in Linux.
I have to say, I couldn't be happier - I've actually been thinking about throwing other people's iPhones on the ground, so that they can join the fun
