Kingston SD cards

Has anyone here had any experience with kingston sd cards? Just bought a class 4 16g card from newegg for 35 including shipping.. The reviews were pretty good and I know theyre a pretty big company so I think i'll be ok but wanted to see if anyone here could confirm or deny this

ive got a pny 16 gig, and it works great. i know kingston makes good ram, so id imagine that a kingston sd card would be worth its money, and i cant see a big brand memory product being garbage, especially in 2011. that price is a win no matter what though.

How much was the card? I would love a bigger card. And what did y'all do to transfer memory from one card to the next?

I've read a few reviews on Wintec cards, and not a lot of them are good. They work fine at first, then start to degrade quickly. To top it off, people say that when they try to get it replaced through Wintec, Wintec claims that its user error or abuse.

I have 16GB for two years already and now i bought 32 gb ... both are working well so far.

16gb are going from $22-$35 shipped right now - class 10 speeds. Pick one up if you are using the stock 8gb. I just ordered one myself.

I've used two different Kingston SD Cards. They worked well for me without any issues. My previous was an 8gb Kingston class 4 and I currently have a Kingston 16gb Class 4 card.
The 8GB is nearly 2 years old and is working just fine. Have used it in multiple cell phones and currently serves as a flash drive for work using an adapter. The 16gb works just as well with some added space.

Yea I went with the class 4 as from whhat I've heard anything higher doesn't yield much results (at least in a cell phone) but its working nice so far

I've also heard bad reviews about the wintec cards too. Let us know what you think about the Kingston.

I bought a Kingston 8GB Class 4 MicroSDHC for my previous phone, the Nexus One, a year ago and I was very satisfied with it. It's way cheaper than the Sandisks and it works great so yeah, highly recommended!

From my experience I would have to agree on the class. To be honest, I think even a quality class 2 card would do just fine on a mobile device.
The class is an indication of the minimum Write Speed (class 4 = 4mb/s class 6 = 6mb/s, etc) The Read speed is generally much higher than that, so even if you are running applications from the SD card, performance shouldn't be hindered by a lower class card.
The only instance I can think of that performance would be affected is if you record a lot of 720P video with your phone. In that case, a faster write speed *Should* help with stuttering issues.
Now if we were talking about a high end SLR camera, then hell yes, speed makes a huge difference. I run a Kingston Class 6 in my SLR and it handles everything just fine, including HD video.
Just my 2 cents...

What it really comes down to is how fast the SD card adapter is in our phones, which I haven't figured out yet. If it'll fully utilize a class 10 card in terms of max write speed, then I would totally go for a class 10 card.
Can anyone verify the max speed our phones could support? (No guesses, please)

I like Samsung cards personally. The performance has always been well above it's rated speed, and I've never had one corrupt/fail on me.

Must have been a promotion. My shipping was free. ANd to update everyone else it works like a charm. Dont really notice anything as far as normal phone function because I dont store apps on SD but My Titanium, Nandroid, and Just general SD backups to the PC are noticably faster.

Kingston is dead to me...
So, used to be a big proponent of Kingston, but they've seriously slipped over the last couple years (and not just flash, I've had major problems with their desktop memory, too, but that's a story for another forum). I bought the SDC4/32GB from Newegg. Supposed to be 32GB class 4 card. Wow. First one they sent wrote at 2MBps, read at 3MBps. Sent it in for a replacement, and I got one that wrote at 3MBps and read at 3.5MBps. Tried formatting it with my phone, with the official sdformatter utility, with Windows, with Linux, nothing helped. Third replacement was back down to 2/3MBps. Hardly class 4. And no, it wasn't my device or anything like that. I've got an actual class 4 8GB Sandisk card that came stock with my phone, and it does 5/7MBps on the same devices on which I tested the Kingston. And the Sandisk can record 720p without stuttering. Recordings from the Kingston were like watching a slideshow.
Very much done with that. Sent it back (again), got a refund, and now I've ordered that class 10 Wintec 32GB. Curious to see how it performs, and I'll stress it right away to see how it handles in the long run (do a bunch of writes and reads the first week to make sure it won't crap out right away). I'll report back here with my results, but they can't be worse than the Kingston. And from what I've read, it may be hit or miss, but when I get a hit, it'll be a class 10!

SD card recommendation?

I never bought one before.... so, please recommend me a solid performer.... and price does not really matter but I always like the price/performance ratio..... 16-32 is fine.

I always recommend anything class 6 or 10 if size bigger than 4 gb or you will suffer when transferring files

I would completely avoid using ebay for SD cards! They are alot cheaper but you will be lucky to get a genuine card, Ive heard that over 90% are fake. Often you will be lucky to get 2GB on a card and it will probably break within a week.

wow 1000% genuine. that's a whole 10x more genuine than an actual genuine one!
I might be cynical but if the seller uses bad English and grammar in his advert I would be careful! Also if they are genuine cards why would the printing differ?
Best spending a little extra and buying from a trustworthy website.

I am using a patriot class 10 16gb off amazon for £26 which I'd recommend without hesitation

The joyflash one looks more legitimate as they are a known company.
However that patriot one just posted is cheaper.
What difference do the brands make I know sandisk and kingston are the best known, but what differences is there between them 2 and the joyflash and patriots?

I've used Sandisk, Kingston and a couple of other ones in my desire HD and best one I have found so far is Lexor 16gb class 4 , quite fast for copying files, HD video records without stuttering and for £14.99 off play it was a bargain

Remember that class speeds are a minimum, known brands are more likely, in my experience, to understate the class thus you know a sandisk class 6 card is going to be a fair bit faster than a no make class 6

I've got a 16 GB SanDisk microSD Card in my DHD.
It's reliable, cheap and the speeds are descent.

Sounds interesting. I was thinking about 64GB but can't find patriot nor any other at a reasonable price. Top capacity is 32GB at least for patriot class 10. Is there any known limit for class 10?

I'm using one of these and for 30 Euro you will hardly get anything better. Don't expect any super performance though, it performs exactly as advertised: ~11MB/s write speed.

Why do you need such fast sd cards? How oftern do you plan on transfering large files in a hurry? Personally when I transfer something from my phone I just leave it charging while it does it. What's the hurry? You can still use your phone while it's doing it.

I would hazard a guess it's more about apps2sd and dalvik2sd. Whilst I personally think that on this phone apps2sd is something that isn't worth bothering with, if you are then you want the fastest card you can get to avoid lag.
I forget who said it but I saw recently the comment "you all moaned when you had no internal storage so we got 1GB now no one wants to use it".
I agree though Dave, when I'm doing SD backups to PC I use it as an excuse to grab yet another brew.

Remember that class numbers are the minimum "writing" speed, so for reads (viewing contents) on a good Class 2 should be good, even for HD videos, however, copying files on it can be slow.
I has a SandDisk 16GB class 2 on the EVO and writing speeds are more like class 4, also a temporary SanDisk 8GB class 2 on the TF with good speeds.
I ordered a SanDisk 32GB class 4 for the TF. If I am correct, there is still no official information if the TF can enjoy class 10 speeds, but it should be.

I bought a 16gb class 10 from Fry's for $33.
I'm getting fantastic speeds from it.

The highest class in the size you want that you can afford.
That's my recommendation.

It really depends on how much space you would like to have in your device.
As far as speed is concerned, the results vary but more often than not, each class is going to be faster than its lower counterpart. If you don't want to spend too much on 32GB class 10 card then class 6 16GB is another balanced option!
On the other hand, this card was $108 just last week, but now its $94 bucks and with excellent reviews:

Fragmentation and Speed
The memory of a card is divided into minimum memory units. The host writes data onto memory units where no data is already stored. As available memory becomes divided into smaller units through normal use, this leads to an increase in non-linear, or fragmented storage. No, I don't think memory capacity has anything to do with speed. What I mean is that class 6 would be faster than class 2 or 4, obviously but it varies from device to device. For example, stock microsd card in my HTC evo was a class-2 which I replaced with one of the cards I linked above and speed of saving pictures and videos improved drastically.
Same card in the transformer was showing speeds that of a class 6 or 10! Having said that, there is no way to save videos and pictures on microsd (external) storage on transformer (at least I don't know and even though it can show galleries found on the external card) so you may not experience that slowness issue.
So for me, the sweet spot is class-6 if you cannot afford class 10 card and even those are now coming down in prices.

Exactly, it depends on the read/write of the device. That's actually my question.
I tried to ask ASUS customer service, but seems she doesn't know the answer. Instead she advised me to carry the tablet & test it when I am buying the card!
The problem is:
1. My Transformer is still on pre-order.
2. I don't think the seller will allow me to open the seal to test the memory card before I commit to purchase it.
Basically I need the memory to watch HD movies while travelling. I agree with dark_aura: the class only tells the 'minimum writing speed'. It should be good enough to watch HD movie even with class 2. But with HD movie in average about 4-5 GB each, it will take more than half an hour just to copy a single movie into the card. >> Currently there are 50 over movies in my disk library line up in the queue. I simply have no time to watch them at home.
Perhaps my question should be:
Can anyone who has class 10 memory confirm if Transformer can write at the speed of 10 MB/s into it?

Got it from $91.99 shipped from buy.com (on eBay) and I used their 10% back eBay bucks thing.
(The IE9 promotion.)

I did some of the research and finally decided on a SanDisk 32gb card. Really didn't want to spend 100 bucks if I could help it. It costs like 85 from Amazon but I ended up getting this bundle from Digital Media Source - fulfilled from Amazon though for about $66 including an SD card adapter and a card reader.
It said that it would come in a retail package - it didn't - just a small envelope with the card and card reader. I did get a class 4 card in my particular shipment though. I was scared it might be counterfeit... apparently a lot of eBay and third party sellers have that issue. They will modify a 2gb or 4gb card to make it report as a 32gb but when you write more than 32gb it will fail.
I ran some tests on my computer (my Transformer is out for repair) - I am getting 5mb a second write and about 12mb a second reads - tested the entire 32gb twice and it seems to work well.
One thing I keep reading about is some of the cards with very fast write speeds (good for taking photos for example) might not have good random access speeds. Not sure if anyone else can comment on that. I decided to go with the SanDisk since they seem to get solid reviews and it was a pretty good value.

I just got my transformer and im looking for a good one without going over 100$. I can get some pretty good deals on some 16gb ones but i don't know what class they are what would you recommend as the lowest you can go

I really doubt it will work...
SDXC devices are backwards compatible, so they accept SD and SDHC memory cards. SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices and should never be used in non-compatible devices.

SDXC devices are backwards compatible, so they accept SD and SDHC memory cards. SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices and should never be used in non-compatible devices.

Okay I was asking because I knew there was some confusion in which people thought the tf was sdxc compatible, so I thought I would ask someone with a tf. My thought was that the tf was only sdhc compatible because that is what it said in the Asus website.
It would've been nice to have a sdxc compatible device though, the storage capabilities are massive.

Issue with MicroSDHC
Hey just received my Transcend 16GB microSDHC class 6 card. I ripped a dvd with Handbrake and I noticed that theres lag and stuttering during playback with Mobo player. The video and audio are out of sync. At first I thought maybe it was the rip itself. I then move the 600MB MP4 file over to the internal drive of the TF. Played the file and its fine, no issues at all. I thought a class 6 card was good enough to play back a 600MB file?? Could it be the card itself?

Does class really matter for a phone like the Infuse? I've read conflicting reviews, saying that anything over class 2 doesn't provide any benefit to the Infuse, and others who swear that anything below Class 6 is terrible for the Infuse. Are there any official stances on this?

and it is a class 2.
I copied the contents of my 16GB card to it and rebooted the phone. I'd say for the next 12-18 hours, it was very slow and choppy. But after that, and to this moment, it is working just fine.
Wonder what the slow down was after the initial install of it?

I'm looking to get the SanDisk class 2 32gb. Is it still acting fine for you? I also seen PNY class 10's "for tablets" for about $10 cheaper than the sandisk is. Wondering if I should go for that or stick with the SanDisk.

I've used it in a BB Bold, then the Captivate when it came out, and now on the Infuse.
It has always worked great, I manly use it for music storage, but also have about 6G of maps ( for using the GPS outside cell reception).
I'm very happy with it.

Awesome. I think what I would use it for mostly is music and movies...The internal space should be plenty for apps/pics.

Dang, I didn't know of any 32 gb sd. I picked up a 16 a few weeks ago...thought it was the biggest.

not sure how fast the infuse can read but i can tell you in actual benchmarks it is posible to have a class 2 read as fast as a class 6, many cheaper cards are faster than they are rated. also im pretty sure android is designed to minimize i/o. i guess it all depends on the complexity and size of the apps you run off of it and how fast the phone is. when someone says a class4 is good they are basically saying dont waist your money. i tend to agree with that.

I highly doubt the controller in the Infuse has a maximum transfer rate that even comes close to class 6 or maybe not even class 4. The only advantage to the high speed cards is if you put the card in your PC and copy files to it (assuming your SD reader can even handle the higher rates).
That being said I bought the A-Data class 10 16GIG because it was only $20 after coupon a couple weeks ago from Meritline but I have no doubt a class 4 or even 2 would be just fine with no noticeable performance difference.
It's no different that putting a SATA3 drive on a SATA2 controller.

yeah I may just go with the Sandisk 32gb class 2. It's about $12 more expensive than the Adata 32GB class 10's but those are sold out at the moment and Sandisk is a better company IMO anyway.

I've been using a Transcend 32GB Class4 Micro SDHC from newegg. It's amazing! It works great! Fast, large and just straight up works with the phone. Formatted memory for me is 31.6 gigs. Highly recommend it.

Adata 32GB Class 10 in my GS2, Infuse and Berry, no complains here. Transfer speeds much better than Class 2 card that came with phone...at least for my Berry that i regularly use transferring files for work.

Exactly this. Someone over in the HD2 section ran several VERY thorough tests confirming that there's very little difference in a class 2 or class 10 card unless you put the card in an adapter directly.

Working fine? Depends...on a reboot, it can take 5-15 minutes for my apparently to appear. Manage Applications can take the same amount of time. And Market apparently are suddenly getting stuck in perpetual downloading.
But the apps launch and run fine. I have no idea if it is the card or not.

ordered the sensation today and wanna ask first how is the card that comes with the device? are people using it or most of you bought a new one?

It's not a bad card, 8gb class 4 so it's fast enough for most everything. What is too bad is that the phones doesn't have more built in memory. I can fill 8gb fast so for me, a 16 GB card is minimum and the higher the class the better imho.
There are a lot of cards out there, I would recommend a name brand unit and at least class 6. I've got a 32gb class 10 from newegg and it works great (cant find link right now).

I brought a 16gig pny card, its been very good so far.

Newegg has the ADATA 16GB Class 10 card for $25 right now. I bought it for $35 when I got my phone last month & I thought even that price was worth it

Try not to buy anything that are related to storage on ebay or online in general, e.g. microsd card, external harddrive, usb stick...they tend to be always fake. Best to go to local stores with good reputation for these things.

8 MB/sec write
this was using SD tool for android.
I am hoping that once S-OFF is achieved, and we get cyanogen running on this device, the speeds will improve. The card cost me about $90 shipped, and came with a USB to microSDHC adapter. At this point I am very disapointed in the card's performance. Even when using my computer to transfer the data to it, the best I got was about 8 MB/sec write.
Also after a full format on Windows 7, the card only shows 29.8 GB capacity
though the detailed figure was 32,005,685,248 Bytes
I am hoping this card is not a fake. Can anyone else confirm their benchmarks with a 32 GB lexar class 10?

locate a Lexar 16gb class 6 from a reputable dealer.
can be had for around $20.
I get around 7-9mb write and around 17-20mb read speed.
seems like about the same speed as the class 10 Lexar above.
32gb version is too expensive still. don't understand why they cost almost 5 times more when the capacity is only double.

Your capacity is correct. The difference is due to the fact that a properly calculated byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, or terabyte is calculated in base-2. The manufacturers have long been in the habit of calculating in base-10, hence the difference in what's claimed and what you actually see.

I think it might be a bit much to imply that any online vendor should be avoided when purchasing flash memory. As long as it's from a reputable vendor (not a ebay seller or amazon seller), you should be OK and in the event that you end up with a fake you would be protected by the vendor's return policy.

Like white i purchased a lexar 32gb class 10 card. Although transferring to the card was slower than claimed from my hard drive but transferring from my old micro sd to the new one i recieved much higher speeds with a class 6 limit due to the old card. As for onlkne vendors i have purchased all my external/internal and sd cards from ebay. I have had 1 problem but that was my fault because the offered price was too good to be true

hmm i read an article on the main xda page about microsd cards.. it says the sandisk one has better i/o and random reads and writes.. so now im really lost..well in the end.. u still cant transfer more than 4gb file onto your microsd card.

why cant you transfer more than 4gb file onto the card?

sorry for not being specific. You cant transfer more than a 4gb file because that's the limit for a fat32 microsd.... i believe.. lol

Yep, fat32 has a file size limit of 4Gb.

now i doubt there will be any difference between sd cards. We need a2sd or d2sd in order to evaluate better. On the HD2 there was a major difference between class 2 and a class 6 card. On the sensation i have tried class 2 and class 6 the performance seems the same.
