My GS2 AT&T - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys can someone help me out here I read the help files etc. I don't know why IM having such a problem with this rooting thing.. Does anyone have the appropriate files to do this? and the detailed instructions? I have done a little searching and maybe IM looking in the wrong spot... I guess IM worried about bricking my new phone any ways I would like to root it too the latest ICS. is it stable system?
Thanks

use odin 1.85 and flash cwm 5.0.2.6, then flash an ics rom from dev section, i recommend mhx superlite. More info is available in the two stickies in the android development section, ics in and a howto flash

Go to the "all in one" thread and it has all the info to root properly... They have very detailed instructions.
Just dont do anything thats NOT in the skyrocket section and a trusted source..
Just make sure you do a backup with clockwork recovery mod before you start flashing things and if you brick your phone it takes 4 easy steps to get back..
ICS is pretty stable for not even being officially released yet but still not as stable as some gingerbread roms.

BTW you have the skyrocket not the normal GS2 right?? dont want to confuse the 2 because flashing a GS2 rom will brick your phone

Yes, that is the correct device for these subforums. Just read the all-in-one thread and the threads that it links to -- no matter how experienced you are it's always a good idea to read the stickies, wikis, and how-to's for a new device.

Android Noob needs help with rooting

hello all, I have a relatively new Samsung Captivate that is now running Gingerbread 2.3.4 ROM. I bought it from someone who had put Gingerbread on it for me.
I want to get it rooted but I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKH3-CL461307
baseband version: I897UCKH3
I hope I have not made a redundant post, I've seen other posts but none of them seem to pertain to a Captivate with 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

Hey kbolt,
have a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723116
Good luck,

Thank you for the quick reply, Bushido. I realised that the latest post in the link is from last year, and after skimming through it (i'll do a proper read through when i have time) I don't know if it's speaking directly to my problem. Or have I missed something?

Would this process work for my situation?
I'm not yet allowed to post links so could you just look at the following website please:
tomsguide.com/us/Root-Your-Android-Phone,review-1688-3.html
Of course, I'm asking for all this help because I am so very afraid of bricking this phone.

Hey kbolt,
you are right - the Samsung Captivate officially got Gingerbread 2.3.4 in the end of august 2011. All the root-versions I found are only approved with froyo. Have a look at this page and the links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I897
One thing you could do is flash a custom rom, which is already rooted i.e.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238551
When something should go wrong, you can flash back the stock rom:

Good luck,

samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 gt-p3113 root

i am not sure if i am posting this in the right spot but here is my question has anyone been able to root the new samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 wifi GT-P3113 8gb running ICS 4.0.3 from factory ??? any help would be great even if it is to guide me to the right forum thanks in advance
anybody? trying to root this device.
I just bought the tab 2 7.0. It's pretty nice. I requested that we get a section for it here at xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617079
Does anyone know which Mod I can contact about this?
+1 for new forum... so Far loving this thing
Just got mine today, wouldn't you know it, first thing I do is look here for root even though it was just released two days ago.
Please add my vote for a new section.
I am in line too
I am in the same boat. I have tried every root process out there available for dual core Samsung devices and came up with nothing. Two things I would love to have for this device 1. Root(so I can restore my game data from my bigger tab) 2. A Bone stock ICS ROM.....I guess I should say a recovery as well so I can load a stock ICS ROM onto there.
Mine is on it's way from J&R and it's going to eventually be torn apart and put in my dash of my Nissan Altima to replace my headunit... but I def. want to root it before then, hope it can get it's own section and some dev's can root and ROM it!
i'm liking this tab, except of course lack of root yet (want to restore app data from TiBu!), but of course it's super early to expect it. i also don't like that tablet-mode statusbar/softkeys can't be hidden, so when I play fullscreen videos the buttons are always there. other than that, i am a happy camper.
agree, the notification bar always there takes some getting used to.
this needs root badly. apps2sd would be huge, among other things.
*sigh*
I am wondering how the root works an I am positive there are plenty of threads explaining this, my quesiotn is would the root be an exploit for ICS? or it is specific to Samsung?

It could go either way really. Some of the things in stock ICS are still there on Samsung's custom build of it. An exploit for either of the two is worth trying. The real problem is, how many Samsung ICS devices are there? Anyone look into trying whatever worked on the Galaxy Nexus for the Tab 2?

Sorry for the double post, but this is a method of root that could be an Android wide thing and not rely on a specific exploit. I know they use this for things like the Transformer Prime as well as the Acer A200, so I figured anyone with some development knowledge could take a look at it as I am clueless on that front.
Forgot to include the link, duh.

I tried a few things from the Acer side as well and came up with nothing. The only official ICS devices for Sammy are Galaxy nexus, and one of the galaxy S II variants. Most times they are rooted through Odin first. This device needs some pub so we can grab a dev or two's attention.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I'm chatting with a developer in private messages right now. I got him to try the mempodroid exploit and he says that it looks like they have closed the hole. Maybe I should send him a link to this thread.
Yes, please do. If a developer needs anything from the Tablet, mine will be at my house tomorrow... I have access to and know how to use ADB, so I can contribute towards helping get us root!

+1 on this. I received mine yesterday and started any known exploit with no success. If any dev needs me to test something let me know!!! We need this thing rooted yesterday and custom roms tomorrow!!!
We also need a separate forum on xda. Just saying.
BTW, Diablo - awesome idea for the head unit. I'm interested to see how it works out!
I went ahead and sent him a link to the thread so we can document any findings that anyone comes across.
I was thinking of using odin to flash the CWM for a plus 7.0. The possibility of bricking my device and not having backup to flash is holding me back though.
Once we have CWM rooting it should be as easy as flashing a zip file with SU included. Right? I'm in no way a dev, just a guy who thinks he knows what is going on.

There is a system dump of our device floating around here, but using odin is the way to go and using another devices odin method setup as a template is probably our best bet.
If we can install CWM, which would have to be built, then we could theoretically flash a superuser.zip, but I think the superuser.zip is a little more complicated than installing just the superuser.apk. I am pretty sure it also includes busy box and binaries, but I am also not a developer so I am just giving it my best educated guess.
I just got mine a few days ago and I will try to odin if you can find a compatible file. I will most certainly lie to microcenter about it being a brick to get a new one.....Just like I did with sprint. I told them it said something about an update and when I clicked it I lost power when I powered it back on it kept looping. So lets get craking on this
As you guy probably know though, you'll want to be very careful with odin. If something goes wrong or it is flashed the wrong way, you will totally screw your device up.

you gotta read and search my friend. Questions go in Q&A btw. XDA isn't going to spoon feed you, the info to get back to stock is all over the place. if you got to a custom rom, I'm confident you can flash odin back to stock
Moved to Q&A. I'm almost sure this might be covered somewhere else but at least have it in the correct forum
Cheers

This is your actual question. By now you may know Xda organizes those answers in the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket Android Development forum section. Look for the pushpin icons at the top of the list of threads. they are your "stickies", like an FAQ.
Remember OTA updates, when offered, do not mix with custom recoveries like CWM. You will need to flash a stock recovery.

but anyway read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 , its a post i started for ur situation, u would have found many by doing a simple search

[Q] Gingerbread to AOKP Jelly Bean re-booting at splash screen

Hello,
I haven't flashed since my first smart phone (HTC WING).. now Sensation 4g. So what I have done so far after much research:
S-off
CWM installed
Backup of stock made (and used..)
No firmware update (probable issue)
I have read and im inferring from the posts that since im on Gingerbread I need to do a firmware update to ICS. I would like to know however to use the AOKP Jelly Bean ROM is there yet another Firmware update I will need to install or is it not necessary at all.
I am assuming its firmware most likely but id rather not assume.
I get stuck at the splash screen advises me to pick a language and reboots constantly.
Thanks in advance.
Just bumping to ensure it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Noob question about flashing custom rom

Hello guys, so i am new to the atrix 2 and new to the motorola phones in general. My question is what do i need to install a custom rom? So far i rooted my phone and that's it. Whats the next step? And also do i need to unlock bootloaders in order to flesh custom roms? Thank you in advance.
Don't rush into flashing roms, without understanding a few things. Everything is available in this forum, so search and read. Flashing without reading may brick ur device
Not trying to sound like an ass but if i knew what to do when it comes flashing a rom on atrix 2 i wouldn't post this topic. I searched the forums and on youtube but there is no step by step explanation. On the forums seems like different people have different methods for flashing and some say they method works and some say it dont. So if somebody have simple step by step explanation please post. I really did search but i am confused and dont want to brick my phone. Thank you

Also not to sound like an ass, but if you've truly searched and read this forum and you're STILL confused then you probably shouldn't do it right now anyway. I only say this because there is only one way to flash the vast majority of the ROMs here (the exceptions being stock ROMs & in some cases, MIUI). If you haven't read enough to know that much then you just haven't read enough. Keep reading/searching. It's to your benefit to do so and you'll find everything you need to know in the process.
