Hold off, since when is a removable battery and SD cards "stupid". How many times has a removable battery saved your ass? Mine? Many. SD cards, don't even get me started, this is a critical part of Android.
Hell, without SD cards and removable batteries, the decision to go Android is at least 18.6% harder.
Cheers

All I am saying is that this is not what makes Android great and it's a manufacturer's choice anyway. Not Google's, if you know what I mean. There's much more to Android than SD and battery and this articles point it out.
To answer your questions:
1) I never needed an extra battery and I have never ran out of juice when I needed the phone.
2) I get by with my 8GB SD Card and 32GB internal memory would be more than enough for _any_ needs on a smartphone.
And because manufacturers can make a (much) slimmer phone with this sacrifice, I prefer it. I would never buy a bigger phone than 3.6 inch if it were not thin. Doesn't fit into my pocket.
There's a large thread about these videos already here at xda but as regards batteries and sd cards no they are not a feature of the os itself but are a manufacturers choice.
However because ios has only one maker and user, apple, it does come into discussion as a major difference between android and ios simply because apple do not offer these features.
And for me a removable battery is great as on long trips you can play lots of games or videos without worrying about battery life if you have a spare handy

AH... Dave, you beat me to the punch. Let's provide the link to make it all the easier. Now there is a third video.

I would just like to point out that the Sony Xperia S doesn't have a removable battery or SD card slot but is still thousands of miles ahead of any crapple product...
Android will always win against the iPhone... If ever that changes then I will eat my hat!
But SD cards are a big advantage. I can add 64GB of storage for $80, or if I only need 32GB the price per GB is much cheaper. You can find them for a little over $20 now. And when I get a new phone that SD card I invested in can come with me.
Ok, ok, I give up. If the SD Card is the only/main advantage that Android has over iOS, so be it...
I just do not agree with that.

You're a little late to the party, XD I saw these the day the CREATOR posted them.
Well i am Android user who is speaking in favour of IOS. With an Anroid device you can never do that......

Apple is more popular because it's hip culture to own an Apple device, that's why.
SD card & rooting are the advantages for sure.
One reason I think android is better aside from removable batteries an having SD card access is that you can make your phone so much more unique. Using different keyboards, launchers and diapers and stuff is awesome. When get tired of looking at the same old crap just change it up. Can't do that with an apple.

I think Android is better because of the battery life and the possibility to customize your phone.

More info on Zune HD
I'm going to order it as soon as it will be available in my country The device looks nice, the performance is great, and the interface too.
Im selling my Archos 605 Wifi (160Gb) with DVR Station and 4 plug ins just to get the cash together to buy it
So the answer is YES
Not sure yet. I've been a Zune user for a couple years now and I love my 80. Best music device I've ever used.
The HD looks awesome, but I'm willing to trade more than half my storage for the new UI. Time will tell.
My only beef with the HD from what I've seen is that it doesn't look like there's a super-fast way to scrub through alphabetical lists. While I think the iPhone media UI is bland and uninteresting in general, the little rolodex scroller on the side works nicely. Zune HD looks like it takes a few more clicks, but maybe there's a shortcut we haven't seen yet.
Yeah, the UI is just marvellous! I've watched all of the films that are available In the alphabetical list you can click a letter and it shows you a kind of keyboard, when you press a letter it takes you to it. I suppose it's quite comfortable.
I'm waiting for a unboxing video - there's no info still on what will be in the box...
Now if we can somehow emulate the UI to work on our phones??
I got to play with one at best buy...good luck running that ui without tegra. Its so silky smooth, so clean. Hopefully some of this makes it to winmo7. I'm already signed up and will have mine opening day. I might end up getting some crap phone and using my Zune as my do all device.
andyjeezy, IMO it would be hard, because:
- the Zune has a capacitive screen
- UI is based on Windows CE
- the Zune works on Nvidia Tegra
I suppose WM 7 will have similar functions, already now 6.5 is based on the same concept of a simple text menu...
why have all these devices taken a step back in storage? I used to use MP3 players that were based on laptop 2.5" disks with 80+gig storage.
Take into account that it claims to be able to play HD tv stuff so thats got to be 720 to be any use, that puts a film at somewhere between 6 and 10gig depending on format.
Now, look at the storage options available on the Zune HD.....
edit: hell, even my Acer M900 has 16gig in it and my Omnia, 32gig and they are both phones!
The Zune has no longer a HDD, but flash memory, that's why the storage is much smaller... But thanks to that the device is lighter and more shock-resistant

Exactly and not capable of storing more than 1 HD film ..... so why bother even being capable of playing it?
And to repeat, my Omnia has a combined 32gig onboard/miniSD storage and thats a phone.
MS surely wanted to cut the cost of production of the Zune HD, so that it would be a real Ipod killer... It would be great if the new Zune had a memory card slot, as in your Omnia

Spot on! THEN it could be used as it SHOULD be used. One film per card - you could carry around a mini film library, how cool would that be?!
As it is, its rediculous that they are making them with such little onboard and (Afaik) no way to expand it.
Definetly getting it. Still have and use my Zune 30.
I was going to buy one in October when I'm going to the US but since my Touch 3G is coming tommorow, I can't see any point in getting one now, probably just get the new PS3
I forgot to mention. I hope the Zune HD can connect to wmwifirouter or HTC wifi. I know the older Zunes cannot.
The New Zune runs a modified version of WM6.5 with bits of WM7. How long will it take for people to hack it?
The hard part will be driver support.

The recommended profiles are roughly 3GB per hour. While 32GB might not be great for carrying around a mini film library, it WOULD be useful for carrying around a few episodes of your favorite shows (or maybe one or two movies). I'm much more likely to watch, say, the latest eps of House or 30 Rock on this thing than watching full feature films.
And they WILL be launching a 64GB version in the future, presumably when flash gets cheap enough.
A microSD slot would have been nice, but I'm pretty sure MS was trying to make the thing as small and sleek and easy-to-use as possible.

You have seen the size of a mini-sd card right? Suggesting that MS didn't install the capability to "make the thing as small" is stretching it a bit far in my opinion and a poor excuse if that really is the truth. As for easy to use, how easy is to unplug a card and plug a new one in?

The card is small, but the reader is bigger. Not saying it couldn't be done (or that it wouldn't be a good tradeoff), but the internals on these things get cramped.
As for easy -- sure, but we're not idiots. The Zune line is designed for mass market idiots. I think there's been concern that people would think they HAD to buy microSD for storage or that it would be cumbersome to manage exactly where the data is, etc. It sounds stupid to competent people who can handle such things, but having worked in IT for a while, I can say there's definitely some folks who'd have their minds blown by an SD slot.
I am hoping Apple does release a 64GB Ipod Touch this year forcing Microsoft to do the same with the Zune HD.
Look at these pictures...
It's a perfect fit

(the microSD was intentionally moved 1 mm away to show the edges)
seems like there was going to be support for microSD, but in the end they decided not to do it
someone said in a thread in the accessories section that one of the NS cases they bought had what seemed like a slot in the side to remove and insert an SD card, so maybe?
Isn't that where the NFC chip is located, hence the prongs? Or is the chip entirely in the back case?

the prongs connects to the back cover that have some sort of Antennae or flat Speaker
i'll say it's Antennae as the speaker is already in the back
look at the picture (an my totally worn out space bar on the keyboard ), the 2 gold/copper contacts and the rectangle shape that it's attached to

Yeah, according to the teardown on iFixit(http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-S-Teardown/4365/1), that rectangle on the back is the NFC module so those contacts run into the chip on the motherboard.
So, then I suppose, the question becomes did Google have to choose between microSD support or NFC?
but look at the back cover, it does also have the hole where the microSD was supposed to go
but you are right on that question, it might have came down to the choice of this or that...
i wonder if there's any hardware hack, to install the microSD support for ourself
in the end the fact is it doesnt have an SD card so we gotta deal with what we got, I for one dont really care, I hate to do this but the iphone doesnt have an SD card, that isnt a big deal is it?

Ultimately, I agree. However, if I had been given a choice between NFC and a microSD card if that is indeed what it came down to, I probably would have chosen the latter. 16gbs is far more than enough space for me. I recently wiped my SD partition which was barely a gig simply because it was becoming too cluttered (left over folders from apps I no longer used, old NAND backups that weren't my ohshitstock fallback, just generally outdated stuff, et al.
I highly doubt I will ever fill up the space entirely as I'm not one who insists on walking around with my entire mp3 collection, both Star Wars trilogies, and/or my family photographic/videographic history just because I think I should be able to. Lol
here is another close up, of the back cover with the perfect fit with extra room on both side of the microSD

according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field_communication
NFC has a way shorter distance than Bluetooth and less data rate.
so... what's the future to provide NFC support?
and the radio frecuency used is very low, as in easy to face interference issues.
heck even a R/C car can break havoc to a NFC

Sort of like the folks on the Vibrant forums installed a FFC? Or the physical Galaxy S GPS fix?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I thought the Nexus S is using a new Ext4 partition or something. If I were you, I'd return the NS for a GS and throw 2.3 on it. Hell of a lot easier than what you're talking about doing.
There are numerous reasons to get rid of the removable storage.
1) Move to the cloud and don't worry about local storage
2) More reliable hardware if you can standardize on the assembly line
3) More security, Less attack vectors (rootin n1 with sd card hack)
4) Easier to test the recent switch to ext 4 by removing variables
5) Less moving parts
6) Faster data access

That would be like what the Vibrant did.
But Nexus S has better OS, NFC, and everything else seems slightly better out of the box.
The rest of the SGS series seems to have poor QA, and software wise is always playing a catch up game

yes, in a similar fashion, but instead of installing a FFC, we install a microSD slot
the challenge on this side project is to find a microSD mount that fits into that hole in the compartment, and match the soldering pins in the motherboard.
No one is gonna be "adding" a micro sd slot like a FFC was added. It's an entirely different situation. With the ffc was just pulled. In this case the pcb is new:
oh well, there goes the idea.
i can see it has no space nor any point of contacts to mount the microSD
seems like they really had to choose either or scenario as mentioned above
NFC vs. microSD
this is what i was talking about in a previous post about how the case had a space for an SD card
Look guys, it doesn't have internal Micro SD, this is all pure NAND, no SD trickery like WP7... Google made this a dev device, and they wanted to give devs a feature of Gingerbread, virtual SD card compartments. They wanted you to use the virtual SD card for transfer, it's a feature for Gingerbread, so devices with no SD card can work better with Froyo's apps to sd. It's very basic, and they did want to cut costs, wouldn't they have used just an internal SDHC 16gig micro SD card? They just didn't put one, end of discussion.

Hey! Thanks for checking in! I came up with an idea for a product that I think will be a great addition to this community. My idea involves producing hardware for specific Android tablets and smartphones to increase their storage capacity, this device is currently not on the market anywhere in the world. Their is a need in the market that is not being filled, the truth is from ios to android everyone wants more storage for their mobile devices.
This device would be low profile and connect seamlessly to your smartphone or tablet. Everyone knows you can buy an otg cable for extra storage or purchase the Kingston Wi‑Drive, but who wants to lug around a wireless hard drive the same size of your already large smartphone or worse have an otg cable dangling around to fall out or break your micro USB port.
My invention will allow for flexibility and mobility, you can workout or even go jogging without the use of a flimsy otg cable or an unnecessary WiFi hard drive that has a limited battery capacity. One of my biggest achievements is allowing you to have all of this tech with a very small footprint that connects seamlessly with your target device. Files are stored locally via SD or microSD without the use of cloud storage (Cloud storage can be your worst enemy if your not on a unlimited data plan). All of your movies, music and pictures will be available on the fly for local commutes or long distance traveling.
With the rise of HD content and smartphones being effective laptop replacements, having more storage has become essential. My biggest concern is to make sure this product if affordable, and in doing so i will not include any additional storage due to high cost flash memory. I feel its more beneficial to the end user to use his or her already owned SD or microSD card, plus you can find amazing deals on SD cards just about anywhere in the market.
Device details:
- Maximum Storage capacity of 256GB not including your internal storage
(Depending on your device you can can max out your storage capacity to 384GB).
- Change SD or microSD on the fly (SD SDHC SDXC microSD microSDHC microSDXC)
- Unit will allow for flexibility and mobility
- All your data will be stored locally
Other supported products in the future:
- Samsung Galaxy nexus
- Nexus 7
- Nexus 10
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy Note
- Samsung Galaxy Note II
- Droid Razr
More Devices to come...
I want to start an open discussion about the future of this device, please leave your feedback and any insights you have. This product will be in the market in 3 months time starting with the Samsung Galaxy S III for all carriers.
All feedback is greatly appreciated to bring this product to market, I wanna personally thank everyone who helps with this exciting process!
Good idea but how will you give its start...

My friend is in need of a phone that's totalling in capacity at atleast 64GB, no matter if it's microsd 32+internal 32 or microsd 64, just as long as it's atleast 64GB all in all, and it doesnt matter if it's rather old like Nexus S but not something very expensive like HTC One because Philippines used phones market is good for those, what's an ok Android device like that? it's really problematic because it's hard to tell from just google search, so if you already know one from the back of your mind I'll be greatful.
My friend just loves to take his nearly 30GB(and rather fast growing) music library everywhere and his iPod Classic just broke, and his suffered from the rather common flaw of the jack breaking plus large capacity mp3's are so hard to find in here, no matter where we look, so we just thought it's not a bad idea to just go for a phone.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
EDIT: Preferably at a low to mid end kind of price like 160 USD(even when estimated when it's used)

I am a 21 year phone enthusiast and would like to help you out in selecting a phone.
Your needs are very unique and there is only One such phone which satisfies your requirement
In past years, There has not been any phone which could expand its storage to 64 gb both on board and off.
But Nokia is the only Leading Innovation in This Feild.
Expandable Memory Upto 64 GB,
Nokia Lumia 520, that was recently unveiled as the 'cheapest Windows Phone 8' mobile,
Is now available for purchase from Nokia's official website and other online as well as offline dealers for 190$

Can anyone who has the pro please confirm if there is SD card support ? It should be within one of the receptacle trays that are used for the dual Sims.
It seems their is conflicting information on the official sites and some reviews of Porsche design variant that share the same chassis indicate there is no SD card slot or support.
There is no SD for the pro variant. A friend of mine got it thinking GSM arena listed it had. Once it arrived it didn't so he is now selling the pro to get the normal mate.

This is what the slot looks like if anyone is wondering, i dont think you can put an sd card in there, as someone mentioned.
EDIT: Picture is from PD version, just checked the Pro and it's the same
Thanks guys, the confirmation is appreciated.
Knew the PD varient didn't have one but had hoped they had just hobbled it with single sim restrictions and that the international pro version would SD storage enabled.
Why can't we ever find that truly ideal phone......
I wonder why the 'Pro' would have a smaller screen, and no SD capability. I was excited to see it coming only to be disappointed.
On top of that, no Verizon capability. I'm thinking of moving over to them. I had thought the international would support it, but no luck.
Sorry, I guess I just felt the need to whine.

I know..
I checked Sony xz today and it has a similar slot but an SD card fits instead of the second SIM, that's a smarter design for sure

Yup, I'm returning my Pro. It's an odd design choice. It doesn't seem that there are any advantages to the Pro in the storage department. The SIM cards function the same from what I can tell and the Pro removes the micro SD card slot for no apparent reason.
I think Huawei wanted the OLED (or perhaps even more specifically the curved screen) but couldn't get a decent 6" display and had to settle for the smaller display.

Is the XZ dual SIM like Huawei's? The XZ has cut so many corners with odd decisions though. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Less RAM, less storage space and much slower storage too. Still suffers from poor camera performance, displays need to be improved, fingerprint scanner disabled in the US due to patent issues and poor placement too. Lots of proprietary tech that gets disabled permanently if bootloader is unlocked. Their release cadence of 6 months is too fast as well. They should move to a yearly release and stop making so many blunders and make a great device for once which would mean we get one great device per year instead of two bad ones. But oh well. Their loss, not mine. I'll end my rant here

It has almost the same design of sim tray except for the fact that the second sim is perpendicular and you can place a micro sd instead.
I didn't like the phone overall either, however it's not a bad device at all. For my the huawei pro/pd is much better than any android right now.

The regular Mate 9 has dual SIM and micro SD through their hybrid tray design so that's why it's odd that the Pro does not. Dunno if it's space constraints. Maybe the hybrid tray requires additional components around the tray that can't fit with the 4000 mAh battery and smaller body.
additional storage in Huawei Mate 9 Pro
Really? Just get the 6GB & 128 GB model. You need more space? Buy a USB Type C microSD adapter. I am using a microSD with an additional 128gb to store songs and others.
