Help please!! I don't know what to do! I'm not used to rooting Androids! Jailbreaking iPhones is different!
Try super one click. That's what I had to use. I posted a link to it in this forum if you search for it.
this root method worked like a charm on my atrix 2 running 2.3.6ota! of coarse all credit goes to shortfuse for making this super easy one click program!

Root Help
Make sure under setting>applications >development that the USB debugging is checked. And yeah would agree to using the one click method. Also look up what version of Android you are using under about phone under settings. This will help in getting root access.
Don't root if you don't know what you're doing

This will work if you follow it. However, I hate to be that developer that's telling people not to mess with stuff cause they're new, but be careful. having a rooted phone is great, but understand that just rooting does nothing at all. rooting simply allows you to do stuff that Motorola/AT&T/Android does not allow. You gain "Root" or admin access. There is a reason they do not let you access this stuff by default. It is essential to the system, and you can seriously screw up your phone by messing with it. That said. with a little care and research, rooting is easy and unlocks the path to having a better phone and understanding the inner workings of it better. Long story short. You should not be rooting if you don't know what you are doing and can't figure out how to make it work. When I started messing with this, I knew very little about Android, So I did a bunch of research, and learned more. Once I felt comfortable rooting and understood how it worked, I did. I now run a new rom and many other tweaks, and it's great, but I know I risk breaking my phone if I do something without the proper precautions.
To me this is the best way to root, and don't forget the USB debugging fron setting, applications, development=USB DEBUG.
It works great on the Motorola Atrix 2 running 2.3.6.

If you have problems with moving files, you can use Root Explorer to move them. Watch out for typos on the last step. Other than that, it definitely works. I have done it many times.
idk..
I did this, and everything worked up to the last step.
It read no errors, but nothing worked.
I figured out that it didn't actually create the directory, so I created it with rootexplorer, copied the file in, and then when i restarted my phone was bricked D:
I've since exchanged it, but I'm gonna hold off for official support before I try again.

You probably jumped the gun there. These phones are actually pretty hard to truly brick unless you flash something to the "phone" in Odin. What directory were you creating? All of the directories that you are trying to work with are already there. All you have to do is put two files on your sdcard, move one of them to /system/xbin and then flash flash the other. I've done this probably 50 times in the last month and with the exception of a typo the very first time, I haven't had a single problem.
Don't use SuperOneClick... I had problem after problem when I used it to root. "de-rooted" (not sure that's a word) it with SuperOneClick then used Z4root. Everything worked perfectly after that. Also I was making a mistake when trying this step I think - "adb push path/to/recovery.bin /sdcard/recovery.bin" I was stupidly starting adb shell first then trying to run adb push. Hope that helps some.
I am debating rooting also, just a bit hesitant and reading everything i can for now. Which is the best root method so far as i can tell there about 20 different variants.

Everyone has their own favorite. Personally I use both SOC and Z4, depending on where I'm at. I've never had a problem with either. Good choice, though, reading everything that you can find.

i dont know what you are reading but with regards to the US Cellular Samsung Captivate there is O N E method and really only 1 method.
SuperOneClick 1.55 which can be downloaded right here at XDA.
its pretty friggin dummy proof really.
And just incase you were thinking rooting gets you everything (like 3 of my coworkers) rooting just unlocks the door, its up to you whether you want to walk thru and start installed and flashing mods but jsut to ROOT the phone allows you to do things not being rooted will not.

Actually I SOC didn't work well for me. z4 worked perfectly on my Mesmerize. I had problems with SOC.

my friend no offense, but if you had problems with superoneclick then you got problems.....
the biggest problem is the creators instructions, he tells you to disable usb debugging then to enable it when it says waiting for device... to bad you cant because the usb cable is plugged in and you cant do anything like that when the cable is plugged in.
i leave debugging enabled because it needs to be on to run the root.
30 seconds later i am rooted,, easy as that.
It's totally cool that it worked for you.
I'm just saying that I followed the instructions of SOC (not that there are any instructions, you just click on the big ROOT button) and then tried to install Clockworkmod.
I could not get anything to work properly. I then used z4 and it worked.
I'm happy to hear that it worked for you though but "I have no problems" not sure why you have to go there.
You realize that there are lots of reasons why something may work on your phone and not mine right? Also if you want to get picky you called it the US Cellular "Captivate". If it's from U.S. Cellular then it's the "Mesmerize". Maybe that's why SOC worked for you and not me...
I also had problems with the SOC method of rooting my Mesmerize... It looked like it worked but the method for flashing CWM wouldn't work. Kept getting access denied errors. Z4root worked like a charm though. Don't know why, don't especially care either way.

Does z4root install superuser.apk and buysbox? Also with z4root which version of superuser.apk does it install, I noticed the creator has updated the apk recently here:

Hey everyone!
I'm finally glad to say that i have oficially become am Infuse owner and android junky! My buddy was able to get me the Infuse while in NY after many other attempts and heartbreak...
This thing is amazing! My first android phone and I love everything about it so far. Too be honest, the size isn't nearly as uncomfortable as i thought it could be. Feels great in the hand, bit slippery thought.
The next step is to unlock the sim which I believe i need to root it first yeah? When i root the device will change to vanilla Froyo or will touchwiz still be there? What will i lose in regards to apps and widgets and things like that?
I have seen two posts regarding rooting and sim unlocking so far. This is my first adroid device so this process is quite new to me. Would you all point in the right direction for which you believe is the best newb friendly for to root and sim unlock. I will be doing this first thing after work on Monday.
Thanks for all the helps as always!
I'm sooo excited...
First things first....
Find and download the latest Samsung Kies and install....this will give you the latest drivers to root using super one click...
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
Thanks!
When i plugged the device to my computer I saw that there were 3 options: Mass storage, media, and somthing about Kies. Do i need to download this on the device or on my computer? And then would i select the Kies option when connecting it to the computer? I know this all newb of me, but i do appreciate all the help.
you need to google kies find and install with out it you cant really root.
then head over to Android development and download both the root and unlock since you need it unlocked.
as regards for losing apps or touchwiz, they still will be there.

read the whole thread on unlocking. it may print the wrong line and not give you the proper unlock code. you may need to use adb to find it through instructions found in the thread. also you will need the usb drivers which will install with kies (unless you are on a mac then you dont need drivers for usb devices) but if you find the samsung drivers without kies that might be better.
when you root it will still be touchwiz. touchwiz is hard to get rid of, not that there is a point, it isnt a bad ui.
i actually used this to root and unlock. i subsequently tested it with a Tmob sim and it worked great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072
but yeah, get the drivers first and then follow the instructions and you'll be well on your way to freedom!
Downloaded Kies
Dowloaded superoneclick v 1.9.1
When i open superoneclick, i have a few files like root, adb, driver...etc. There is also one that says superoneclick, do i click on this one and extract?
EDIT: I saw the other thread posted by lost1 that uses the Rage against the cage method. This has a root and unlock paired together which i'm thinking might be an easier way to go.

Unlocked Infuse in 10 min
The Infuse is my first smartphone ever and im getting used to it too. I read about rooting and such and decided to do it. I used the super one click method and it was easy. I just downloaded and installed kies which recognized my phone then ran the superclick program and it was done. super easy. dont think it unlocked the sim but im not worried about that though.
I think this thread needs to come about because of my pure hatred for people not understanding what root actually is. We have a nice clean forum and I would like to start a trend. I want people to know what ROOTING is and why when something 'doesnt work' its not because of 'root'

you never installed the application to do that, or you never TOLD your phone to do that. some of this stuff requires a little bit of EFFORT to make it do what you want. rooting isnt some magical voodoo that takes care of itself.

rooting does NOT install a new OS for you. hell, installing a new OS doesnt even require ROOT on most phones. once you have an unlocked bootloader, you put a recovery on it, and do all your flashing through recovery. with a stock phone, unlocked bootloader, you can literally never even boot to the OS to flash a new rom on it.
i am having problems flashing this rom through CWM

ROOT has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything outside of the actual booted up OS. CWM happens before the OS loads, which means that debugging means F All as well.

why did you root? rooting your phone should be done only because you have a PURPOSE for doing so. some application that you want to use that requires root, de-bloating, access to /system to poke around, etc. if you have to ask what to do after rooting, you never should have rooted.
This is a pretty good article covering many aspects of rooting
The first paragraph of that article sums it up pretty well:
Rooting your Android phone enables you to use the superuser, or root, permissions of the Linux-based operating system (OS). This gives you and apps that take advantage of the root permissions more control over the Android operating system and the device. Rooting can be entertaining for techies, but there are also plenty of practical benefits.
Click to collapse
The article is mainly geared toward using SuperOneClick to root, but that method doesnt work on 2.3.5+ as of yet. There is a pretty good list of applications there though.
rooting only applies WITHIN the OS itself. rooting only affects the OS. rooting does NOT make the phone self-aware. rooting doesnt awaken some hidden demon that will make your phone do magical things. its simply a way to get access to the 'administrator' account of the OS and utilize things that are locked out by manufacturers/carriers.
Sorry for the rant, folks. I just have a few pet peeves and people talking about root like its the 'root' of all their problems is one of them. it proves they have no idea what they are doing on their expensive toys. hacking a phone isnt childs play and people that dont want to understand it, have no business here. if you dont understand what you are doing to your phone, READ, UNDERSTAND, COMPREHEND. if you dont want to do those things, then STOP. STAY STOCK and move along, nothing to see here.
I forgot to mention that the entire rooting process only adds 2 files (really only one is NEEDED, the other you can get from the market)
/system/bin/su is added
/system/app/Superuser.apk is added (can be downloaded in market)
thats the root. ONE binary and ONE apk. nothing magical there.
the exploit that is needed is simply to allow a 'temporary' root so that the /system may be mounted as read/write and those 2 apps can be added. the exploit is the magical part.....lol
Thanks for posting this, should be stickied. Good read for the noobs.

Hello guys,
I'm thinking of trying to root my San Francisco II, but the only rooting method I've found is the one that includes flashing and using adb. I haven't discovered if any of the one-click apps such SuperOneClick or Universal Androot will work on my device- is there any risk in trying to use them or is it perfectly safe for me to just give it a shot?
Thanks
I think the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work, but I'd suggest doing the ADB method. These one-click rooters don't teach you anything about the phone. If you really want to try then try it, but the known method will get you acquainted with the device and manual flashing so that in the future if you have a problem or want to try something then you have the tools to do so - in your head, and installed on your computer.
If you want to try those apps, I don't see how it could brick your phone. If you have done a search to see if they work on your phone and have come up with nothing, chances are they won't work.

I tried using SuperOneClick, didn't work unfortunately. I don't want to do the ADB method as it installs Clockwork Recovery and I don't want to mess around with roms etc on this device yet, I'd rather wait until I'm comfortable with the methods etc, and currently they look a bit too tedious for my liking.
Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it.

You can have CWM installed without flashing any roms. You would probably use it to flash Superuser to gain root. If you're not comfortable doing it then wait. Take some time to read up on everything. Read everything you can find. Read the Q&A forums and read the responses, you'll find a lot of little things that aren't covered in guides. If there's a video on YouTube then watch that. When you feel like you are comfortable with all of it then root.
If you're not tech savvy and it's difficult for you, then you can always get someone else to teach you. I do one on one crash courses (a couple hours) in person for gas money plus a little (15-30 bucks, depending on time), they're tailored for what the person needs - an older person that just needs to know how to download apps and stuff or someone that wants to flash and tweak their heart away. If you have the money, check craigslist. If you can't find anything then make an ad.
If you need further assistance in general, I'm here to help if you get stumped. While I'm not familiar with your phone, I'd be happy to look over the rooting method and help you out (for free, of course). If there's a specific forum for your device then I'd check there and post any questions you have.
Good luck!

Hello fellow xoom owners... I've had my xoom for awhile now but was hesitant to root because of nagging wife and children who also use xoom. But I'm a "rooter" and I can't take it anymore ...lol. I'm not new to rooting except for xoom as I'm not experienced in adb and what not... so if anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative. I've looked at plenty of tutorials and only found a select few that are simple but losing data is a "requirement"... Anyways as stated earlier any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Idk how I got here...
You will lose data because when you fastboot unlock it wipes the xoom. What you can do is back up your internal data n your computer. After youre done rooting put everything back. Your apps will have to be redownloaded from the play store.

There's no reason to fear adb. It's very easy to set up and to use. After installation, you basically copy-paste the instructions. When I say it's easy, I mean it, last week I didn't have any idea of the existence of adb. An hour after I read about it, I managed to start using it. It's that easy!
I paste you the links I found useful (basically how to use it and how to install it).

I think I'm going to try to make a complete backup this weekend, just to see how much time it takes. But my device is already unlocked and rooted, so I suppose if you decide to try it, it would be on your risk.
Thanks for the links. As soon as I get home I'll read it and see where to go from there. If I'm brave enough to go through with it lol
idk how I got here...
Just word of advice, if you're rooting for the hell of rooting it and you don't need it, I did say (from personal opinion) forget it.
Ok on topic, adb is fairly safe I never heard of anyone bricking their device using adb commands unless they moved some system files (don't know if that's even possible with no root).
