[Q] Desire S USB Brick - HTC Desire S

Hi all,
I have a friend and he came to me with a problem with his "Desire S" that I assume as "USB Brick". Here's the symptoms:
When I plugged into any computer, the phone doesn't come out with options about Disk Drive, HTC Sync, USB Teethering, nor Internet Pass-through, but just charge only. I did UNCHECK the remember option tick. The phone just charge
I go to bootloader:
instead of normal "fastboot usb" I get only "fastboot AC". The phone just charge.
The phone itself is fine: I can use card reader to put zip files into the sdcard and flash in recovery etc. But as i said fastboot usb doesn't detect, and adb push of course doesn't work as well.
USB Debugging is checked, "fast boot" in Menu>settings>power is unchecked.
from what I read across in the internet I'm positive that the issue I'm dealing here is USB brick.
So here's my question: Anyone faces the same problem and have fix for it?

have you tried flashing a different rom ?

yup all has the same result.
it's similar to USB bricking issues for the Desire. Just that their fix works on their phone but not here. :/

a google search found this http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-s/458357-solved-usb-bricked.html not sure if will help but you never no. if not have you tried flashing a ruu.

i saw that as well. the only problem is that flashing ruu requires fastboot no? (running the .exe file from pc which the phone is connected)
That's the part where mine can't work. Anything that must be done from comp doesn't work.
Thanks!

Why are you trying to solve HW problem with SW?
I don't know what is "USB brick", but there's no such thing. While you can screw up USB access in the OS, there's no way you can screw it up in the bootloader. If you read well and put attention, you'll see that all "USB brick" threads in Desire were in OS, and fastboot worked. The most likely reason for USB not working in fastboot is physical - one of the USB pins disconnected, either bent inside the microUSB socket of the phone (most likely), or broke off the main board (less likely). So the required fix is physical as well.

Okay thanks, as I've said I don't know much about this issue either, and I thought it's like the common issues faced in Desire thread.
From the outward look it seems to me that the pins are fine. So i guess it is the pin on the mainboard got disconnected?
if so, is it possible for me to return to stock from this stage?

I guess you want to return your phone under warranty. You can try to flash the stock ROM through creating and flashing PB99IMG.ZIP (google it to see what it is and what it does - it's a file from SD card that is automatically flashed by HBOOT).
If you have no warranty - I'd suggest taking it to the nearest decent phone lab. If I'm not mistaken, the price for fixing will be low.
The pins might look fine, but one of the 5 might not be protruding enough to touch the plug pins.

Just to check some obvious things
Have you tried more than one PC?
Have you tried more than one USB cable?
Did you ever instal HTC drivers? You should find HTC sync exe in root of sd card
And just to correct a possible typo in the post above
- rename it to "PG88IMG.zip" (case sensitive)
- put it on the root of your SD card
- reboot into hboot and wait.

Sadly the warranty expired not long time ago. :S Okay, I'll tell him to take to the nearest phone lab.

Tried on both his and my laptop. My DHD works fine with my comp and my cable so it's definitely not the cable problem. As for drivers, it should make sound when the phone is plugged in but it's not. And if my DHD works, I don't see any reason why the DS can't.
And thanks for more clarification about flashing the PG88IMG.zip in hboot

have had the same problem with my dhd. The problem seems to be intermittent on my phone, in that i got it working a few weeks ago by following the suggestions for the desire usb brick problem.(yes it did work for desire hd too)
By this i mean after numerous tries i got my laptop to be recognized at least in my computer(even though the sd card would not show)After
i used sdk tools and command promt and entered:-
fastboot oem eraseconfig
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
fastboot oem boot
in that order.
After this my dhd mounted fine in 2 laptops at home and one pc
However about 2 days ago its has just stopped being rexcognized by my laptop or pc again,I have tried several times over the last few days but nothing works
I am convinced now it is an intermittent h/w propblem,
I am now using my phone explorer to access the sd card over wi fi so i don't have to remove it and insert it in laptop sd slot.

If the phone is recognized by PC in fastboot mode, and phone screen shows "FASTBOOT USB" - it isn't a HW problem.
If the phone isn't recognized in fastboot mode - it is a HW problem.
This is a simple and 100% way to distinguish between so-called "USB bricks" and HW failure of USB slot / one of the USB lines.

My phone does show every time in fastboot usb , but if i send a command via adb get 'waiting for device'.
However as I said in my previous post it was connecting every time a few days ago on 2 laptops and 1 pc.
Nothing has changed on the phone or the laptops since but now it has stopped responding again. It will not connect on laptop with or without using adb
I am going to try some different roms over the next few days, currently using Leedroid 5.1.1, but i am siick of spending hours and hours on it.
I think I can live with using my phone explore over wi fi(although its slower) and if I do need to copy something faster on or off the sd card, I unmount it and us it on my laptop slot with and SD adaptor

Fastboot and ADB are TWO DIFFERENT ENTITIES.
You can't send ADB command when in fastboot.
You can't send fastboot command when in ADB.
To have ADB functional, you need the kernel to be loaded properly and at least start of Android boot.
To have fastboot functional, all you need to do is reboot to bootloader.

Jack_R1 thanks for the info.
I get waiting for device in fastboot usb mode and if I try adb commands with phone booted its no use because the pc or laptop does not even see the phone in device manager

If you get "waiting for device" - make sure all the drivers are installed in Windows. Look in Device Manager, see if you can find "Android bootloader" or "Android 1.0" device.
If there's none - you might have a HW problem on your hands.

I'm sure its a harware problem, but i have no problem charging , either from mains or usb from laptop or pc & sd card card works fine within phone.
Things I have tried on 2 laptops and 1 pc:-
uninstalled /reinstalled htc drivers and adb drivers
uninstalled htc sync totally and installed drivers only from Ace hack kit tools folder
tried different roms(gingerbread and ICS)
went back to stock rom 1.32
After trying all the above the phone is not recognized in laptop/pc device manager
I've decide the next phone I have will be one with 16gb or 32gb internal memory which is plenty, no need for sd card lol

Stuck in Bootloader with no option of mtty

My Dear Samaritans,
IMPORTANT:
- My SD/Memory card is removed
- My Sim card is removed
I was upgrading to Tomal v8.9 on a vista 64 system via a virtual machine XP SP2. Update failed and I got stuck in bootloader.
Tried reflashing but got an error and the flash failed... also the program crashed during recovery.
Tried using v8.71 still crashed without any luck.
Moved to a pure XP SP3 desktop...
When I connect the device to the computer(s) "Serial" changes to "USB" but XP sees it as an unrecognized device.
Tried flashing again but same error as on the virtual machine.
Tried mtty (1.16 & 1.42) but neither give me the option of USB, only COM1 and COM2. And had already de-activated the USB connection in Activesync.
Have read through the forum but have had no luck. Everyone's issue is resolved as soon as they remove their SD or SIM, but I have neither and am also using XP with activesync's USB disabled.
Tried UNI_ExitBootloader but that does not find/recognise the device either.
If it helps -- My device is/was an O2 XDA Exec (Stock) which I had previously flashed with Tomal's v8.5
I am ready to try anything, please help!
P.S: The error is Error 112
Did you install ActiveSync on xp pc?
If not, do it now and try again.
I had similar problem. Had corrupted DOC sector
and MTTY was the only solution, but although the Serial changed to USB, I got 'unrecognised' message and Mtty didn't give USB as an option. At some point it occured to me that it was my computer's USB port, for some reason the device was recognised by 1 in 4 ports only, So I just tried my USB cable in different ports until the 'device unrecognised' messaged stopped appearing. Finally, after I was ready to cry in frustration, it just worked. Don't give up.
I heard it mentioned somewhere that the device that went through Mtty will be recognised only by the port used in Mtty procedure.
That... or your device's USB is no longer properly attached to the mainboard.

Thank you for the ray of hope! Will keep trying every hourly reboot in every USB port (4 in all).
Weird thing is I never had to go through mtty before so this is my first need for it.
Got the physical connection checked and it is supposedly OK...
Thank you for the prompt help...
Don't worry
I had exactly the same problem. First I tried this and it worked but still no connection via mtty. On that evening I disconnected and connected a lot and I removed the battery for a long time (one night). Later I could connect but I don't know why. Maybe these two things were the solution. Mtty showed "usb>" and I've done a DOC format...
If nothing works I would create a rom-image (on sunday or monday) for your sd-card like it's written in the service manual.

No need for hourly reboots, just get into Bootloader, connect USB to your device and try different ports on computer with a few seconds in between to ensure no 'unrecognised device' message popping up. Once you'll get a connection - go for Mtty facility, the USB is the last on the list of ports.

I think you understood me wrong. When your device is still unusable, I would create the files you need to do the steps in point 8.3 (Use Pre-loaded SD card to Re-flash Unit) in the service manual.
Sorry for my bad english

I created succesfully a pre-loaded sd card, flashing via this sd works. But I can't copy the files. When I want to open the drive it says, that I have to format the sd card. Is there a special tool to copy the files? Or you find someone near you with a universal.

Tried the SD image method with a 128MB SD but didn't work. Maybe because I have a G4 and the method is for G3
managed to get a connection finally and ran MTTY, after "task28 55a" it just hung for a long time so I disconnected.
Tried running UNI_ExitBootloader.exe and now can get in and out of Bootloader but still cannot flash or connect...
Any suggestions welcome...
Try this....
This might sound silly but it's worked for me in the past.
1. Go into bootloader (without mem card or sim)
2. Plug-in the USB cable
3. Hold the buttons to go into bootloader again whilst plugged in.
4. DOC Format
5. Flash ROM
My Universal had loads of problems but that is how i fixed it, tried everything else like you, when i first plugged it in on the bootloader nothing happened until i pressed and held the buttons whilst it was plugged in, then windows made the usb connected sound so i quickly mtty'd! lol
Hope this helps, Good luck!!!

Hi i have had similar problems also i have an XDA 2 pda originaly had wm2003 on it (tried to flash it to wm2003se ) can someone help me also im realy at a loss =C many thanks in advance (i will give more detail if someone actualy) replys to me

Welcome to the forum
Universal does not means all devices, actually is a model
Please enter into the right section of the forum
Goos luck,
Can you Help?
I have an XDA II was on O2 uk network. I used to flash it all the time and knew my way around. however recently i flashed it in vista without thinking.. and as i upgraded the rom from wm2003 to wm2003se about 25% of the way through vista disconnected the device then it was unrecognised usb.. then vista started installing new drivers that recognised the device... however this then crashed flashing the rom onto the pda..
It wont soft or hard reset, i took the battery out for 24 hours and tried again and nothing.. the only thing on screen is that it says serial on the top of the screen (which changes to usb when connected but get error 101 when trying to reflash/ no activesync connection and am confused my mtty as when it does connect i cant type into the text area only paste)
on the bottom of the screen is v1.06 (which before the flash crash was V1.0 something lower than v1.06)
basicaly is the device recoverable as long as i have this serial / usb recognition by the device????? (using mtty i cant connect through ports or usb but thats because i dont seem to understand how to use it)
the other question is is there any other way to get a rom back onto the device without mtty or activesynch..
I pray that ysomeone will respond .. i miss my pda dearly
a thousand thanks in advance

[Q] Bricked HTC inspire 4g unable to unbrick

I need help! I rooted my new htc inspire and was downloading some of the 3rd party apps I use from market. One of the programs which was a font changer bricked my phone. I have reviewed every possible way to unbrick it and nothing works. When I go into bootloader the only options I have are hboot, which turns to hboot usb plug when plugged to the computer, fast boot, recovery, factory reset, simlock and image crc. Hboot does nothing I installed the hboot drivers and still nothing. I did recovery and it stalls on the HTC bootup screen then slowly blacks out, factory reset it just boots to the htc boot screen and sticks there. I have pulled the battery out more then 50 times, that doesnt work. Htc sync does not recognize that the phone is connected to the computer and the revoke hboot usb installer sees that the android is hooked up to the computer but doesnt do anything except tell me the drivers are installed. I used Bubby's one click root to root my phone. Can anyone help? This is the second phone I bricked and considering I just bought this I really dont have the money to buy another phone. Any help would be awesome!!!!
Have you tried an ODIN yet? Find the stock image for your phone (should be a tar), use odin, and flash it. Make sure you have the correct USB drivers for your phone installed.
In fact, look at this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11419005&postcount=2
Ive wanted to try it but was a little weary about doing it cause I though ODIN was for capitvate phones and because the ruu is from cingular and im on AT&T. Also wonder how to do it when I can not set my phone to debug or disk drive.
remove battery and keep it outside for 12 hr. then put it back and restart...
Done that already last night after it bricked. It still does the same thing. Im downloading the ruu the sync doesnt acknowledge my phone at all and the drivers on my phone are right and up to date. Except how do I put the ruu on my phone if my phone does not bootup and if I go into the bootloader screen it takes me right to the htc boot screen and doesnt go farther. Im following all the steps that have been posted in other threads but it doesnt help when I already tried majority of these things. I dont know if there is any other option to unbrick my phone if this does not work!
Ok the RUU says it can not read my phone. I get an error saying USB connection error and says to check if the phone is connected to the usb cable and the cable is connected to the pc. All of which it is. So what do I do next as the ruu cant even read my phone?

HTC Sensation wont connect to PC (only charge)

Hey, i have had my sensation about 2 months, now when i connect it to a pc it dosnt ask what connection type to choose, it only charges, in the menu it is set to ask me about connection type, while connected to pc there is now no icon in the notification area (used to say 'charge only' or 'disk drive') even when rebooted into 4ext recovery and mounted/toggle usb connection, it dosnt connect as a disk drive like it has always done in the past, it only charges, i have tried 3 different pc's and 3 different micro usb cables, also have tried updating the firmware to 3.24 and installed ICS with the same result, i think its a hardware issue? last time it worked was 3 days ago connected via usb to a jvc headunit listening to my music files.
Weird problem!
Maybe you could try with a different SD card to eliminate the possibility of it being an SD card problem?
If it still doesn't work with another SD Card it may well be a hardware problem.

Well I had the same problem with the custom ROM I use.
Installing it clean with a full wipe solved it.
It is definitely NOT the pc, laptop or SD-card.
Are you on a custom ROM?
- Yes then install clean with full wipe. (make a nandroid backup!!!) and install all apps new.
- No then do a total reset (reset to factory settings) and do all the install stuff new. After that you can also install with RUU your ROM designated for your device.
You will see your USB connection will show up!!
same here
i have exactly the same problem as described in op.
will try flashing a new rom then also; first have to buy a flashcard reader then to get my new rom ON the sd card....
or do you think a nandroid restore would fix the problem? will try that first.
Will report back
The nandroid might restore the problem.I'd try it first.if not , then do the full wipe reinstall as said above .if at the time of the nandroid back up it was working is a good possibility it will fix the issue. Hope this helps!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
I am having the same problem ..... Dont feel like wiping and going stock.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA
Couple of tips that might fix your problem.
If you're running aokp make sure you disable fast charge.
Turn on mtp in USB computer connection settings. I have trouble accessing the options from most custom roms, so a little work around is to install either apex or nova, long press add to home screen - shortcuts - activities - scroll down to Settings - USB computer connection(com.android.settings.usbsettings) . Tap it and you should get a shortcut. Select mtp.
Ultimately, the thing that fixed my same issue was getting a different USB cable lol. You can also try different ports on your computer.
Good luck, hope you can find a solution to your problem! If all else fails, you can try using airdroid for transfer over Wi-Fi
Anyone find a fix on this , mine has started doing this yesterday :crying:
Tried 3 different cables , different usb ports , different sd card , formatting sdcards in 4xt recovery , reflashing firmware.... also htc sync re installed for drivers (htc sync does not see the phone), adb re installed (adb does not see the phone??)
dont think its the rom as adb cannot see the phone in fastboot
anyone any other ideas , tried ninjasalad suggestion on enabling mtp also ??
I think you're fine. I had this problem after flashing ARHD 6.6.X, OrdDriod series, and PkMn series. What I did was the following:
Went into settings. Connect to PC. Unchecked the "ask me" , Restart phone. Then checked "ask me" again. Lastly, restarted phone again.
After doing that a couple times, it worked for me. Maybe you can try that.
This happened to me as well. I think it's a hardware problem

make sure you have enabled usb debugging mode from settings
install htc drivers
install htc sync(i am not sure if it is necessary)
use 2.0 usb ports
use the original usb cable if you aren't using it yet

I can't do that because to enable usb debugging mode you have to use the phone and the phone's screen is completely broken and there's no way to even get into it using the touch screen.

[Q] Latest stock update caused bugs and no PC connectivity

Hello,
I'm working with the stock ROM 4.0.3 and HTC sense 3.6.
yesterday, I got an official update from HTC to SW 3.33.415.51. After I did this update, my phone started behaving abnormally.
1- Location application opens whenever I reboot or connect my USB cable to my computer.
2- The connect to PC options don't popup anymore when I connect my USB cable, nor can I select the phone to act as a "Disk Drive".
Along with other bugs like the speaker turning ON automatically when I answer phone calls, but I only care about the problem of connecting my phone as a disk drive... It prevents me from doing anything (bootloader, customized ROM,....etc).
The thing is, when I connect my USB cable, the location service opens instead of the connect to PC options popup, so I don't know if this is the cause of the problem, something causes the location service to open instead of the connect to PC options.
I tried the following:
1- Reset to factory settings.
2- different cables and SD cards and laptops.
3- I can read the SD card using file manager.
4- I can't even unlock the bootloader and put a new custom ROM, cause when connecting the phone to PC via USB cable and reboot on boatloder mode, it can't feel it, and the phone shows fastboot AC (not USB). and whatever commands I enter in the cmd, it is not executed cause the phone is not connected.
I've searched all the WEB and can't find a solution. I appreciate your support. The PC connection was working fine before this update so I doubt (or wish) it is not a hardware problem.
will re-installing PCSC.APK fix that? does anyone have this apk for sensation?
Thanks
Try flashing the 3.33 package again from here: http://goo.gl/qcbH9
Pls read in detail here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412618
and check your CID is supported.
If it doesn't work, try to find the RRU for your phone and flash it.
PD: to get to the bootloader, first take the battery out.
I hope it helps.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I tried it, edited my CID in it and flashed, it worked and the .zip file was loaded but didn't solve the problem. actually nothing changed.

There is another way you can use a custom rom without using USB. I have to do it this way because my USB port is damaged. First get a SD card reader. You can buy them for 5 dollars. Then take out your SD card place in the card reader, connect the card reader to the computer. Transfer the rom from the computer directly to the SD card. Then put card back in phone. Flash rom as usual. This works well. To get to boot loader remove battery put battery back in press volume down and power at same time. Hope this helps. At least you know another way of flashing rom without using USB. Maybe this will help because you can't use your USB. I wish you the best.

Thanks for your reply. I've thought about that, but my phone is Locked and S-ON (I didn't put any custom ROM on it before). I guess to put a custom ROM I need to unlock and S-Off it first? And to do that I must be able to connect it via USB.
Yes I believe so, but you can flash roms with s on. If you enable smart flash in recovery. However you must first be rooted. And yes that requires USB. How about my second suggestion. I looked into this. I ordered the USB part it's very cheap. Then called a cell repair company in my neighborhood. They said it will take three hours to do and cost 55.dollars. I haven't had the extra money but I'm going to fix it this way, when I get the money. This is a option for you! It's much cheaper then sending in for repairs! The part itself is like 7.dollars. so all together to fix locally it's going to be around 62.dollars. not too bad. Just look in your local phone book for cell phone repair shops. Get quote over phone but tell them you have the part it's much cheaper to order part yourself. I hope this helps. At least it will save you some money! Press thanks if I helped in any way. Best of luck. This is how I'm repairing mine.

HTC One S - Charges but doesn't communicate...

Hi,
I have two HTC One S, one connects to the PC and I have been able to install CM10.1, all is good, other than it doesn't charge the battery no-matter what. The other one, while connected to any USB power, charges the battery but it doesn't allow to get in communication with the same computer that the other one talks with.
1) The two One S are both S4 -
2) The drivers on the PC are OK otherwise they both wouldn't connect, same with fastboot and adb, if it works for one it must (?) work for the other.
3) Swapped cables, no luck, swapped USB port, no luck, various PC and phone reboots...
4) The ONE S that charges but doesn't communicate with the PC is still Locked and has the latest OTA from T-Mobile. I can't unlock the bootloader because, while it can go to HBOTT/Fastboot, it doesn't switch to "fastboot usb" when connected.
5) The ONE S that charges, even if I enable debugging option, it still doesn't show in ADB Devices....
Do you think it is an hardware issue? If it were, how would I go to investigate/fix? (Can it be fixed?)
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader without the USB connection using the stock T-Mobile software?
Anyone?
Thank You
Hardware or Software issue?
Well, no-one has responded to this one. So I thought I might just as well update the status of the issue which is still an issue. How would I be able to understand if the issue is software or hardware? - If the fastboot driver is installed properly, as it works with another phone (exactly the same model, same cable, same port) why doesn't it switch from "fastboot" to "fastboot usb"? How do I tell if there is an issue with the software on the phone or an hardware problem again , on the phone? -
Why, if I enable ADB on the phone then it doesn't show the ADB sign? See, this is a big issue as I can't unlock the bootloader and SIM without access to fastboot (or am I wrong?).
Anyway here are some details about the specific phone:

I have the same problem. The update stated security enhancements, so I'm wondering if they did something to prevent it from being rooted because I had no issue doing it with previous releases.
Don't know which one are you referring to. The problem that it doesn't charge or that it doesn't connect to via usb? - For me the one that doesn't charge is rooted and Cyanogen Mod 10.1 is installed. The other one, the one that doesn't communicate but charges via usb has the stock "from recovery" of T-Mobile. With this one I have tried a hard reset and loaded from recovery. I wish there was a way to put an T-Mobile update.zip on it and re-flash it from recovery.

My problem was it wouldn't unlock the bootloader. It would only charge. I could sync with htc sync so I know my cable was good and the driver installed properly. After several hours of using the all in one tool, and other programs I've found online, I went ahead and went through the process on htc site to unlock the boot loader again. Boot the phone to bootloader, Press the power button to select it. You should hear some noises on the pc indicating it's recognizing the phone. Now on the pc run the following command through adb. I don't remember doing this the first time I unlocked it, so not sure if this is new or not. Make sure your Unlock_code.bin file is in the same folder as adb
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Your phone will now have an unlocked bootloader. You may have to reboot the device before you can flash the recovery.
After that is done flash a recovery through adb, I did the htc1s touch from cwm.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
Now reboot your phone normally, You will need the file SuperSU.zip, get the cwm installable one. I can't post links since I don't have enough posts yet, but simple google search will give you the download for it.
Now mount the htc 1s as a disk drive then copy the SuperSU.zip to the /sdcard, which will be the drive you have in windows, I think it's just over 9gb. So you should have some folders in there, just put it in with the folders. Now reboot the phone through adb to the recovery, and choose to flash zip file from sdcard, then locate the SuperSU.zip and select it. Now reboot the phone, mine rebooted 2x before it booted into where I could use the phone. The phone is now rooted!
My phone doesn't sync. it doesn't switch to adb it's not detected by the PC. A different phone (same model) connects fine same port same PC same cable. In hboot it doesn't turn to USB when I connect the cable.

Does your phone show connected under device manager? Mine has two entries, one for htc device, and one for android adb device. Which driver did you use for the phone, the htc one or the one in the sdk? Also have you tried connecting this phone to another computer to see if the same problem exists of it not being recognized?
I would ultimately take the unrooted one back. If it still doesn't work, the issue is on your end.
This is an eBay phone, so realistically, I can't return it. I was wondering if, to rule out an hardware issue, as I can get to the recovery screen:
-> Android system recovery <3e>
->Use volume key to highlight; click power key to select..
-> Reboot system now
-> Apply update from external storage
-> Wipe data/factory reset
->Wipe cache partition
->Apply update from cache
->Apply update from internal storage.
If I could download in the phone storage or connect an external usb drive, and use this menu to re-load a stock t-mobile update.zip file?
Would it be possible? Would it help?
