In case you didn't know (and don't knock yourself CWM Recovery doesn't come with instructions) in addition to the power and volume keys, the soft keys can be used to navigate.
Menu key -----> down
Home key -----> up
Search key -----> select
I came upon this discovery quite by accident one day. Its pretty convenient at times. Its just an alternative input method I thought people that aren't aware of might wanna know about. Oh, and it has haptic feedback as well. That is all.

Oops I've known about that for a while I thought others did too otherwise I would have shared .
Anyways using the soft keys for navigation is SO convenient. Thanks for sharing!
Didn't know that either, thanks man.

Oh, here's another. It's a bit harder discover
Back key -----> back
That's cool, I had no idea you could use the soft buttons to do that for this phone. I just wish it were easier to boot into from a powered down state.

On the keyboard in the left corner there is the ALT and the function keys..well while im txting(haven't tried any other time) I hold down alt and delete to delete a whole row of txt and if I accidentally hit both the function,alt, and delete keys it restarts my phone???..has anyone else had this problem? Not sure if its a root thing or not.

This isn't a problem, this is great! I have been looking for that key combination, I just didn't realize it would be ctrl-alt-delete like windows. What you stumbled on is the hardware reboot combination. If every thing freezes up, you can reboot your phone with this. Just be careful with your big fingers
Sent from my DROID2 using Tapatalk
i just used the quickboot program and had a shortcut on one of my screens to reboot lol
By function I am going to assume you mean the shift key - as in the one to make letters capitalized. While I do not experience an issue with this, it is a nice find.
Oh...well that's cool lol. Yeah the shift button right above alt on the physical keyboard. Does this ctrl alt delete "function" work on anybody else's droid 2, jw.

Works on mine, rebooted right away. This is a good bit of information you've stumbled upon, will be very useful if my phone ever locks up (which so far, it hasn't, and I've had it for a few weeks now).
I don't understand why you would hold down alt and hit delete if u simply 'tap' alt then delete it performs the same function (deleting whole line of txt) this way you won't have to be careful, just do it differently =D
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
anyone else find it funny that this guy is upset that this happens and everyone else is ecstatic? i cant stop laughing...
Yeah well I would have done that but even now if i just hit ALT and delete it does nothing...the droid 1 used to do this..in order to delete a whole line(atleast on my phone) i have to hold alt down. And i was curious to see if this function was just for a certain rom or all rooted phones. So thanks for making me sound like I don't know what im doing. I think its funny too...not a problem and im not complaining/sad at all..I think its cool I stumbled across this..

Here's a flashable zip to change your search button to shut screen off
For those that needs it and the lazy bastards that don't want to do it manually.
Nifty, I never use the search key so this may prove useful.
Perfect. I never use that button as well... Wonder if that button can be mapped to wake up screen as well??
That would be awesome but I think once the screen is off so does the soft keys as its an extension of the screen itself power wise atleast.
Screen on you can edit the soft keys to whatever you want
Screen off you're basically touching the screen when its off I.e nothing happens
It would be a different scenario if its a hard key
Has anyone flashed this yet? I never got around to it while I was on GB and it's not working on ICS. I don't want to declare that it doesn't work at all if it's only some difference with ICS or something with the alpha.

Its not been tested with ics yet as I'm still on cm7 latest nightly 221 but ics probably have a different location of where the keyboard layout are but if you can edit it and use this same script making sure to edit where the files is flash to you have my permission lol.
Thanks for the zip for the search button key. I love being a lazy bastard.

I'm very lazy, is there a way were can make a zip so we can change the search key to multitasking in ics sammich? I'm sure a lot of people would like that because holding home takes too long lol. Thanks

It may, when I get home from work I plan to try to reverse engineer both mods and see if any of it makes sense to me and can modify the search button for screen off. So long as they can be opened in a text editor I should be able to figure something out.

The zip for the search button mod, modify the actual buttons mapped out to specific numbers when its pressed for example for default the search button is 217 followed by 2 functions specified to it in /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
So when that button is pressed it is the value of 217 referencing what's defined in that file and yes its you can edit it with any editor.
Cool, thanks. I mostly follow what you're saying, but I'm better if I see it or have an exact example.

Just extract the files and go to the qwerty.kl and open it in notepad.

I'm having the worst trouble with my nexus S's search button triggering all the time. Sometimes it seems that its just being overly sensitive like my finger brushes along the bottom of the phone while I type / hold the phone. And the button activates.
Its horribly irritating its pretty well documented as an old issue but I would like to possibly start this topic here on xda. Someone mentioned a software fix for it triggering by itself in some legacy version of android. But if there is anyone who has a fix please let me know I've had to exit the search bar about 10x while writing this.

Disable touch capacitive buttons (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554111&page=6) and install a rom with on screen buttons (Cyborg or aokp)...use kernal with bln to take off the lights
I did this to fix the auto back button firing
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
I wonder what causes it I mean if its just open the phone up and clean it or something I don't really have a problem with it.
Could you possibly paste a recent link to the rom if that's not too much to ask.
Also did you ever manage to figure out why it was happening?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA
Its in the general forum aokp b38
Some people say its a software-hardware problem...some people send it off for screen replacement and it fixed it...but I didn't want to send it so I just mod it like this and its working awesome
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
OK awesome I really don't want to have to send it because I like the amoled screen. There is a forum post that says there is a fix in one of the ota updates don't know what it was exactly though I'll try and find it and report back.

Try this and remap the button....
Button remapper:http://db.tt/FvaH4Wvu
Also install this if needed Keynrtracker: http://db.tt/r6ht9PyT
To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

I'll try this first since I'm trying to stick with my hsdpa uncaoped radio with the matr1x kernel and the crossbones rom and voodoo sound and video.
------------------
Edit: it would appear that the first file "key remapper " worked great and all I needed was root no losing screen space or flashing a new rom. I just remapped key 217 (search key) to the camera focus function. Which shouldn't bother me too much.

GLAD TO HELP...
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
Hello guys, I just want to know is there any way through which I can increase the sensitivity of the power button? My phone is now one year old and I've found that the power button is very annoying. If any new person happens to use my phone, he is to be taught to apply a bit more force to the power button to lock the phone.
Also, long press is difficult! It's very difficult to take screenshots (with CM ROM that has power button screen shot option).
When I long press to take a screenshot, after releasing the button, the phone sleeps and gets locked. It happens several times and to take one screenshot I have to face it almost five times. I think it is because of dust that gets collected below the plastic button, is there any suggestion from you that can make my finger's life easy??? :banghead:
Uhh, and do not suggest opening the phone body and clean it!!!

And how does a topic come under 'favourites' section of the xda premium app??? Such a stupid question but I am really not finding a way out!!!
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
Same problem. Isn't much you can do with the power button. It's mechanical so to fix the actual button you would have to open up the phone and fiddle in there. (don't try this if you don't know what you're doing)
I, for one, am using this mod. It works on the rom level, not the phone itself so it needs to be flashed every time you install a new rom (even when it's the same one but different version) and it won't work when the phone is completely shut down, you still have to use the power button.
Oh yeah! I knew that mod but forgot!
Well then, for now I use a screen locking widget... but still to unlock power button is required...
Will have to stay with it only.. :banghead:

Yes I know I can, but sometimes just to see notifications or time, I don't take out the phone from the cover, only its head...
The buttons all light up but don't work at all. I have the phone all disassembled but dont know which connector it is? Can someone please help me so I can see if its connected right.
OR How about mapping the BACK function to the camera button? I can deal with that lol i'm running cyanogen mod 9
Maybe like, have it be half press on camera is home, hard press is back? And hold is menu?
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using xda premium
If you have it torn apart the cable connecting those buttons should be obvious
But if you don't want to replace it and are willing to remap then there are apps in the play store that can add soft buttons to homescreens
