[Tutorial]Root, Unlock, Recovery and flashing a Custom ROM - HTC One S

Just a quick step by step tutorial to get a Custom ROM working on your One S.
Step 1: Unlock
Go on http://www.htcdev.com and create yourself an account on HTCDEV.
Download These Fastboot Files
Make a new folder on your C:/ drive called fastboot.
Extract The Zip downloaded in step 2 to the new folder
Go Here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select "All Other Supported Models" and "then begin unlock bootloader"
Yes, Tick both Boxes, Proceed
Skip up to step 8 as we have all we need for the first 7 steps
Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 10 seconds
Power your phone on by holding power and volume down
Highlight Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power
Plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
Change directory to your folder where we put fastboot files cd c:\fastboot
Type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Select & copy the text as per step 9 on the HTCDev website
Paste your identifier token into the box at the bottom and submit
You Will Very Shortly Receive an email from HTCDev with a link to the second part of the instructions and your "Unlock_code.bin" attached
Download the "Unlock_code.bin" from the email and save it to the same folder that we extracted fastboot files to in step 2
Type this into your command prompt window fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
The Display Will change on your phone, press Vol + to accept and power to confirm.
Thanks to bagofcrap24 for this part!
Step 2: Recovery
Download the Android SDK
Download the Interim CWM Touch Recovery of Paul or Official CWM of koush (HTC One S)
(Thanks Paul/koush for the Recovery!)
Place the CWM File where the fastboot.exe is (Downloaded with the SDK)
Now open the cmd and navigate to the folder where the CWM File is located
Now type:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_the_recovery.img
For Paul's:
fastboot flash recovery r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img
Step 3: Root
Make sure you are on the stock kernel!
Now root your phone with SuperSU by Chainfire, thanks a lot!
Download SuperSU from the end of the thread
Flash it with the Recovery:
Power off your device and then hold the VOL DOWN + Power to boot into the Bootloader
Navigate with VOL and Power to Recovery
Now flash the .zip:
- install zip from sdcard
- choose zip from sdcard
- select the CWN-SuperSU-v0.87.zip file and flash it
- Reboot now
Now you are able to flash any Custom ROM.

Thanks dude
But htcdevs bootloader unlock is down atm

Really? Try again, for me the website is working.
Anyway, instead of the HTC way you could just wait for a S-OFF tool

The Site is working fine
But when u try to click "Begin unlock Bootloader" nothing happens.
I know, i should wait for a s-off tool.. but dude.. i need my root

The HTC method is good as well
Android without root is nothing..

i think the website is having problems, i have one S connected via usb with debuggins system, i open up the website and choose "All Other Supported Models" , I click begin and nothing, completely nothing happens :/

Just wait some hours

Try with internet explorer (iiik) for me it didnt work with Chrome!

Thanks for this thread showing people the way to go.

alright, just to clarify on macs use Firefox , on chrome and safari htcdev DOES NOT WORK

Is there no alternative to the htc-method (htcdev.com) yet?

not yet

But don't be afraid of htcdev, you don't loose the whole warranty

Thx for replies! What does "not whole warranty" mean? For which cases will it exist, for which not?

I think they will employ the same policy as before. In the past, it was often said that even roted / S-OFFed / SuperCID modded devices received service with no problems when it was very obvious that the problem was hardware related (screen dead, etc.)
What kind of defects they will consider "software/rooing related" is anybodys guess and could only be clarified by emailing the HTC support for your country I assume.

Ah alright. I mean, the most probable case for needing help of the htc support is any hardware related problem since software related problems can be solved on oneselfs own. But I already assume that they are quite good at relating hardware issues to the root (OC etc..)

Having some issue with the CWM right here:
I'm trying to get to the "Install zip from sdcard option", but shortly after pressing the voldown once to highlight that option, CWM kind of resets (screen goes black for a second and I'm back at option 1 ("reboot system now").
Unlock went fine and flashing CWM was not problem either - although I used the r2 from the modaco website.
And I am not sure about the kernel. Anyway to make sure I have the stock one?
(It's a HTC Dev Device)
Thanks for help in advance!

haha, okay, simply touching the option does the trick. seems like only the vol rocker is not "supported" ;D sorry

Rooting woes :-(

Hi all,
I have recently got hold of a Desire S and updated it a couple of months ago with the standard ota update from O2 (Or branded phone)...since then I have been getting signal errors which I have read about elsewhere.
Anyway thought I would root my phone...I S-off using revolutionary, it did not appear to work the first time, it appeared to s-off the phone but I did not get prompted for the CWM download, second attempt, it informed i was s-off and to download the CWM, I clicked yes and it tried to download but nothing happens.
So as far as I can tell I am s-off but no root. I have tried gingerbreak and superoneclick both of which stall during the process and do not root my phone.
I am very new to this and not sure where to go from here to get my phone rooted.
My Hboot was 98.002 now it shows:
-Revolutionary-
Saga PVT Ship S-off RL
Hboot-6 .98.1002
If I go into recovery I just get a red triangle with an ! and have to reboot the phone.
So I am at a point where I do not know what to do to get it rooted....or can I just get a pre rooted rom and flash that over the top?
Thanks
I'd suggest that to start you change these setting on your phone
Settings->Power->Fastboot = OFF
Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging = ON
There are various links in my signature, they should all help. Download the adb&fastboot link and extract the files to your c:\temp\ directory on your PC. Then install the HTC drivers then continue and follow the instructions below:
You first need to download CWM recovery image file for this device to your PC into again the C:\temp directory.
Put the phone in Fastboot USB mode (by following instructions below
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Wait for sdcard scan to complete.
Plug in USB cord connected to the computer
Press power ONCE and Fastboot USB mode starts
Then run a CMD shell from the PC and then issue the commands into it from the directory where you have put the downloaded img file (c:\temp\)
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-saga.img
adb reboot recovery
To root you phone then
Download and then copy su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to your sdcard root
Start clockworkmod recovery
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Navigate to recovery with the vol down button.
Press power to select and enter recovery.
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back
Then reboot.
Try to download the pg88img file of cwm our 4ext you find them in the index thread.
Put the pg88img in root of your sd, reboot to bootloader and flash the file. After this the easiest way to gain root would be to flash an prerooted ROM.
Don't forget to make a backup of you're current ROM if anything fails

I feel your pain. I am replying to you to make sure you did all the steps required. Furthermore, in using "Superoneclick", which worked for me on my Samsung Fascinate, if I missed a step it didn't work. I.E - I didn 't re-boot!
@ben_pyett you sir are a lengend!!!
what you posted worked...the only slight thing I had to do different was install the htcdrivers first, as it would recognise my phone, then I could do the adb reboot recovery.
It said it failed but I continued to flash su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip and happy days, now to load up a rom!!
many thanks and also to those who replied

Glad to have been able to help.
Now take a backup using CWM so that you have a safe fall back position - just in case!
I'd then suggest updating the recovery to 4EXT which I personally find easier to use.
You'll then find all the ROMS linked within the INDEX thread
Enjoy!
just running a backup now....just waiting for it to finish then to hunt for a rom.
Will probably use rom manger and voidru, seems a popular choice and a good place to start.
Then pay the £1.56 for 4ext
Thanks again

Completely agree with you. Just wanted to point that it is not necessary to pay (thanks to madmaxx82)
Yeah, I just rooted my galaxy tab, installed lagfix etc (feels like a new piece of hardware now, it so fast!)
I first coudnt do it, because i didn't have the Samsung drivers installed (just like the HTC drivers here)
I never actually rooted my desire s manually!.
I just s-offed, then installed custom roms straight away which already come pre-rooted.

Getting the chacha rooted after htcdev unlock

Dear Members,
A lot of people including my self succesfully unlocked the htc chacha bootloader with the HTCDEV methode. We are verry happy with this developement. Unfortunally every one is trying to get there device rooted now. I tryed manny methodes from this forum but didn't succeed.
Is there anyone who can guide us step by step how to root htc chacha ( s-on but with an unlocked bootloader with the htcdev methode )?
Thx!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this tread detailed guide to root htc chacha after unlocked you're chacha with the HTCDEV methode. THANKS TO Huff! Enjoy! Dont forget to install Superuser. Superuser will grant root permissions to apps.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. CWM Recovery:
1. Download PH06img.zip found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1164468
2. Open PH06img.zip and extract recovery.img
3. Copy recovery.img in the Android folder used earlier for HTCDEV unlock.
4. Open CMD and cd to that folder that folder
5. Run this in CMD: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now you should have CWM Recovery installed.
If there are no errors, power off (Fast boot disabled in Power options) and then enter bootloader mode with vol down + power and select Recovery to verify the install.
B. Root:
1. Download su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
2. Copy it to the SD card
3. Enter in CWM Recovery (start the phone with vol down + power, Fast boot disabled in Power options, or battery removed first) and from bootloader select Recovery and press Power button.
3. With the arrow keys from the phone keyboard select Install from SD card and Choose zip from SD card then select su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip and press enter.
4. Press backspace until you're on the main menu of CWM Recovery and select Reboot.
There's no guide that it's 100% correct for S-ON yet.
Just follow this and it will work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184118
The CWM Recovery won't install like it says, you have to extract the image and flash it with fastboot.
Read the last few pages from the other topics, there are others that succeeded (including me).
Good news you got it working! I did try that but i failed .
Could you explain how to do this in a few detailed steps and help us out here? This would be great!
SUCCES! I will post a detailed guide soon!
No time now so just a very quick guide, if I forget something please someone correct me.

You can check the Tweet screenshot on adlx's post where HTC stated that Status was included.
In theory and in practice ChaCha and Status are the same. There are a few hardware differences (the radio for example, since US uses a different GSM bandwidth).
i want to say thank you to all the respected members.
Thank! Working 100%
Thanks, already rooted!

That's normal. This procedure wont make it S-OFF. But now you have CWM recovery and root, and you can install any custom rom.

Hello User! Before you start reading, I must warn you. First of all, flashing your first custom ROM might end up having ORD. What is ORD you can read here.
Secondly, keep in mind whatever you do, you do it at your own risk. Probability that you will brick your device is very, very small, and if you will follow proper guides, read carefully first post of the thread you are going to use ROM/kernel/recovery/other from, it is almost impossible to brick the device. No, my intention is not to encourage you. Don't even enter bootloader mode on your device if you can't/not going to read what others (probably more experienced) users got to say. Unlocking/flashing process is a very easy and short process, but it requires your attention, reading, thinking and understanding ability.
The best place to start is this thread and this video - click here
I think you are ready now. So where should you start? You probably don't know yet. So let me briefly tell you what options you have:
You might want to root your device and keep 100% stock ROM
You might want to flash custom recovery to be able to create nandroid backups
You might want to flash custom kernel
You might want to flash custom ROM
You might want to have a custom ROM with ability to make you a coffee <--- forget about that one!
You might want to use some UI modifications like % battery
...
Whatever your option is, you need to start from unlocking your bootloader. Unlocking bootloader doesn't mean disabling all security. Your device will remain S-ON, however instead of "LOCKED" from now on it will be "UNLOCKED" or "RELOCKED" (if you decide to lock it back later). What does it mean? Basically you will be able to change content of system, recovery and boot partitions on your device. So let's unlock your device first.
Unlocking bootloader
What you need to know before unlocking the bootloader:
This operation will wipe entire content of your data partition. Read more about negative effects of unlocked bootloader - Negative effects of unlocked bootloader
This operation will not void your warranty, however opinions in this subject are divided. Read more about flashing custom ROMs and warranty - Unlocking bootloader or flashing custom ROM doesn't void your warranty!
If you are not sure if your device has virtual SD card or hardware SD card, read more here - Virtual SD card on Android
HTC One Developer Editions comes with already unlocked bootloader, so you can skip this step if you own HTC One DE.
Download this mini-sdk package and extract it to c:\mini-sdk
Visit htcdev.com site and create your account
Log in into newly created account and on the main site click "Unlock Bootloader" image <click here to see the image>
Click on "Get started" button <click here to see the image>
Expand the list of supported devieces and search for your device model name <click here to see the image>
If you can not find your device on the list, select "All Other Supported Models" <click here to see the image>
Click on "Begin Unlock Bootloader" button
On the "Are you sure you want to continue?" screen click on "Yes" button <click here to see the image>
Tick both boxes and click on "Procced to Unlock Instructions" <click here to see the image>
Follow carefully first 4 steps and click on "Proceed To Step 5" button. Ignore "Required Resources" section on the right side of the screen
Skip Step 5, 6, 7 and click on "Proceed To Step 8" button.
Open up command prompt ( Start > Run > type cmd and hit enter ). The window that appears is called Command Prompt. <click here to see the image>
Navigate to where you unzipped "mini-sdk" package (type in Command Prompt: cd c:\mini-sdk). Note: make sure the path is not c:\mini-sdk\mini-sdk
Follow very carefully steps 8 and 9. At the end click on "Submit" button.
You will receive an e-mail from HTCDev with Unlock_code.bin file attached and a link to the second part of the instructions.
Download Unlock_code.bin file from the e-mail you received and save it to c:\mini-sdk location.
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
On your device screen you will be now asked if you are sure that you want to unlock your bootloader. With volume keys navigate to proper answer and press power button to confirm. Keep in mind this procedure will wipe content of your data partition, including virtual SD card.
After it's done, your bootloader should have "UNLOCKED" text at the top.
Your bootloader is now unlocked. Whatever you want to do next, you need custom recovery for it. Every Android device has recovery partition, but with stock Android recovery you can't do much. Custom recoveries allows you to perform nandroid backup (backup content of your system, userdata and boot partitions) flash .zip packages (custom ROMs, mods, themes etc.) wipe content of your device and more. So let's flash custom recovery first. There are plenty of recoveries, including 4EXT, CWM, TWRP and more. Find the one you believe is best for you (make sure it's compiled for your device model!) and
Flashing custom recovery
What you need to know before flashing custom recovery:
After flashing custom recovery you can always revert to your stock recovery. This procedure will be described later.
Your bootloader needs to be "UNLOCKED". "LOCKED" or "RELOCKED" bootloaders can't flash custom recovery.
This operation will cause your bootloader to show "TAMPERED" text below "UNLOCKED".
For safety reasons, first what you should do is nandroid backup inside recovery. You might need it during "going back to stock" procedure.
Download custom recovery of your choice and rename it to recovery.img
Move recovery.img to c:\mini-sdk location
Connect your device to the PC
Boot your device in fastboot mode (like you did during unlocking bootloader - power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "FASTBOOT")
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot boot recovery.img (this command might not with newer hboots)
Command above will not permantently flash custom recovery, but it will just boot it. Why? Because that way we can backup your original, stock recovery image before we replace it with custom one.
Perform a nandroid backup.
After nandroid backup is done, reboot the device in fastboot mode again.
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now that your bootloader is unlocked and you have custom recovery flashed, you should decide what you want to do next. Let's assume you want to flash a custom ROM.
Flashing custom ROM
What you need to know before flashing custom ROM:
There are many custom ROMs out there. Some of them are more or less modified versions of HTC stock ROMs with HTC Sense. You might also find some AOSP, AOKP or CM ROMs based on pure Android UI without any HTC software on it. Choice is yours. Personally, I recommend you optimized ROMs with HTC Sense on board.
After flashing custom ROM you can always revert to your stock ROM. This procedure will be described later.
Download custom ROM of your choice and copy it to the internal memory of your device (virtual SD card or other)
Boot your device in recovery mode (power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "RECOVERY")
In main menu, select "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard".
Navigate to the location of custom ROM (zip) package and confirm flashing procedure.
Follow the steps on the screen. Every developer use slightly different options in his ROM installer, so just make sure you read it carefully.
If you can't flash custom ROM due to AROMA freezes, there is nothing to be worried about. Just ask for help the developer of your custom ROM.
After flashing process is complete, reboot the device.
However, you might not want to use any of the custom ROMs available, but just be able to have root access on your device. This also can be easily done!
Rooting stock ROM
What you need to know before rooting stock ROM:
You can "un-root" it easily.
As long as you won't change any files on system partition, you still will be able to download and install official OTA updates.
Download Rooting Tools
Boot your device in recovery mode (power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "RECOVERY")
In main menu, select "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard".
Navigate to the location of Rooting Tools (zip) package and confirm flashing procedure.
After flashing process is complete, reboot the device. Your device has now SuperUser.apk, su binary and busybox installed.
If you are not happy with being rooted, or you can't find any custom ROM for your needs, or you need to sell/return your device and you want it to have stock software on board, it's very easy operation.
Going back to stock
What you need to know before going back to stock:
Your bootloader will never be "LOCKED" again. You can't restore it. You can only relock it.
"TAMPERED" text in bootloader will disappear only after proceeding method 2.
There are 3 main methods. All three will be described below.
Method 1 - only for users with .401 devices (for more info click here - RUU variants)
Visit this thread - [ROM] HTC One *STOCK* ROM
Download stock odexed version of most recent firmware and recovery.img
Move recovery.img to c:\mini-sdk location
Boot your device in recovery mode (power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "RECOVERY")
In main menu, select "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard".
Navigate to the location of stock ROM (zip) package and confirm flashing procedure.
After flashing process is complete, reboot the device in bootloader mode.
Connect your device to the PC
Boot your device in fastboot mode (like you did during unlocking bootloader - power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "FASTBOOT")
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You have now stock boot, system and recovery partitions. Time to relock your bootloader.
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot oem lock
Method 2 - flashing RUU (ROM Update Utility)
Visit this or this thread.
Find proper RUU for your device
Connect your device to the PC
Boot your device in fastboot mode (like you did during unlocking bootloader - power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "FASTBOOT")
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot oem lock
Flash RUU and follow on screen instructions.
You have now completely stock software on your device.
Method 3 - flashing nandroid backup
In custom recovery restore nandroid backup you did after flashing custom recovery for the first time.
If you performed nandroid backup before permanently flashing custom recovery, your stock recovery should be now flashed.
If you still have custom recovery, extract recovery.img from your nandroid backup.
Move recovery.img to c:\mini-sdk location
Connect your device to the PC
Boot your device in fastboot mode (like you did during unlocking bootloader - power off the device and turn it on using power + vol down buttons and select "FASTBOOT")
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You have now stock boot, system and recovery partitions. Time to relock your bootloader.
In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot oem lock

General FAQ
General FAQ
1. The zip installation just freezes in AROMA, what should I do?
This is a well known issue involving the AROMA installer, and this will occur with any ROM zip in any recovery. If it freezes, hold Power and Vol-Down until your phone reboots (If this fails, plug your phone into your PC and in CMD type 'adb reboot') Now go back into recovery and start the installation again. It is reported by many users that the installation works better if you don't use the touchscreen for navigation through AROMA - instead, use Vol-Up/Down to navigate and the Power button to select
UPDATE: Please make sure you have the latest recovery version. It is reported that CWM 6.0.3.2 fixes the freezes!
2. When I try to enter recovery it just blinks for a second and the phone reboots. How do I get into recovery?
Use Vol-Down + Power to enter fastboot mode. Now connect the phone to the PC and use 'fastboot erase cache'. After that it should be able to boot recovery correctly.
3. The phone rebooted itself while installing a ROM, now it just bootloops. How should I recover my phone?
Reboot into recovery and flash again. If recovery won't load, check FAQ 2.
4. Do I need to wipe my data everytime I flash a new version of a ROM?
No, a data wipe is only needed when you come from stock or another custom ROM. It is also recommended but not manadtory to wipe when there is a base update. For a more specific answer, please check the Thread of the ROM you are using. The developers will tell you, when a wipe is mandatory.
5. Do I need to flash boot.img seperately?
The majority of ROM installers will flash the boot.img for you. Yes, even when you are S-ON. This is possible on the One. Make sure to read the instructions for your ROM.
6. Do I need to update my radio to flash a ROM?
It is not needed. You can do it if you want to. Newer radios can improve signal, bluetooth, WiFi... Refer to the following thread for more information: Link And also check this thread for a method to update radio in recovery: Link
7. My device is not recognized by adb and fastboot. What should I do?
Make sure you have the latest HTC Drivers (Thread) running and your SDK is up-to-date. Try another USB Port and make sure your cable is working.
8. What is S-OFF and do I need it to flash a ROM/Kernel/Recovery/Radio?
S-OFF means that your bootloader is fully unlocked and allows you to write to more partition than you usually can. You would also be able to flash unsigned firmware. You don't need S-OFF for ROMs, kernels, recoveries and also not for radios (Check FAQ 6)
9. What is the best ROM/Kernel/Recovery?
I really can't answer that question. It greatly depends on what you like. As mentioned in the first post there are Sense, AOKP, AOSP, CM... ROMs. Also there are several kernels, some focusing on performance, some focusing on battery life. Go on and try a few to see what fits you best. You should always make a nandroid backup, so you can go back to another ROM later.
10. I forgot to put a ROM on my sdcard before wiping/flashing kernel and my phone won't boot now. How do I get a ROM on there?
If you have a nandroid backup on the phone, resore it. If you don't have a backup, copy the ROM you wanted to install to the phone via 'adb push rom-name.zip /data/media/rom-name.zip' Then flash as described above.
11. Will unlocking or relocking wipe my device?
Unlocking will wipe your device. So please backup your data! Relocking will NOT wipe it, just when you unlock again.
12. My issue is not mentioned here and/or my phone is still not working after trying to recover. What should I do?
You are always free to post in this thread or the ROM/Kernel/Recovery/Radio thread. You will find helpful members who will support you in solving your problem.
Note: The FAQ are always under construction. New QAs will be added when the get F(requent) (You can also contact me if you find a Q that is not covered here)
There was no complete guide, so I decided to write one myself I hope users will enjoy it!
That was a lot of text for me to write, so if I made mistake somewhere, please feel free to correct me! This thread is generally still under construction and I will improve first post in time

Fixed now
can you explain me something ?
if I click negative effects of unlocked bootloader, it says I can't receive OTA updates.
but in your Rooting stock rom section, you said we can still receive OTA updates.
is there something I'm missing or didnt read correctly ?
also, is the procedure the same for all HTC One, no matter which carrier I bought it from ?

1. Well, I decided not to mention some things to avoid confusion. At the moment unlocking bootloader removes content of /data/preload partition, so indeed, installing OTA will fail. But I truly hope that HTC will fix it at some point and unlocking bootloader won't cause some stock apps to be missing.
2. Which procedure?
by procedures, I meant unlocking bootloader / root / flash custom kernels and/or roms, etc
basically, everything in your guide in 1st post. I live in Canada, I will be buying HTC One from Rogers, so I wonder if all your guides works on every HTC One coming from all carriers/stores/countries.
I'm used to root and flash on Xperia Arc, but never owned an HTC cell phone.
Thanks for quick reply, I really appreciate your work !

[Q] How to downgrade to jb 10.6.1.14.8?

My infinity just passes its warranty and it is in newest stock firmware and not rooted. I think it is too slow and laggy and i would like to make some change by flashing new rom. As i know, the newest firmware .10 can not be unlocked and flash rom? So do i have to downgrade to .8 to make it work?

You don't have to downgrade.
After you unlocked your tablet, you can push a custom recovery through ADB or fastboot and use that custom recovery to flash a custom rom.
If you use this method you bypass rooting the stock rom altogether. Every custom rom is rooted already.

Unlocking and rooting are two different things. There is no known root method at this time for the 10.6.1.14.10 firmware. The Unlock Tool should still work.
I don't think it's a question which firmware you have - sometimes it works like a charm and other users cannot unlock at all due to incorrect or incomplete S/N database on Asus servers. At least I have not heard anything that people have trouble unlocking after the last update.
Just download the latest version, v8 I think, install and run it. The worst that can happen is it fails.
Do yourself a huge favor and educate yourself thoroughly before you try to flash custom software to the tablet.
There is little risk in flashing a custom rom IF you do it right. But yesterday night I tried to help someone who did it wrong and hard bricked his tablet. Read 3 times, ask twice, flash once!

For flashing via adb and the staging partition, Android must be rooted. Fastboot works without root.
I did a clean wipe of my tablet and installed 10.6.1.14.10 onto my tablet.
I have unlocked the bootloader, but when booting up I then have the default recovery and rom supplied by Asus with no root.
I tried motochopper and debugfs method, and as described above neither work, the cmd prompt windows just record failures.
Read this forum regarding what is what (fastboot, root, unlocked etc.) and why you do them
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212
The way I gave root to the stock rom was by loading into fastboot mode and pushing a twrp image to my tablet off CHROMI rom site. I then used that to root the system. To be honest I did not need to root as I could have just then flashed the CHROMI custom rom which comes with SU anyway....
Get fastboot into a folder and also copy the TWRP recovery img inside the fastboot folder
Attach your device to the PC
Start fastboot mode by switching off your tablet then switching on in bootloader by holding down power on and volumn down
Connect tablet to PC (need approperiate drivers)
Open cmd prompt as admininstrator and goto directory with recovery image in the fastboot folder
Type the following commands:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot (though I don't think i typed this if honest, struggling to remember)
Unplug tablet from the PC and reboot into recovery mode
If you got the image of twrp from CHROMI site which includes bootloader also, i think it includes SU, therefore just exit and close recovery and it should ask to install SU. Select yes
Reboot the device
Your device is now rooted, though think you need to run SU in the tablet to get it fully setup.
Sorry this is not 100% perfect, I will recall what I did tonight when at home in front of PC with files.

Hello Berndblb (and everybody else ),
I'm quite a Noob around here as you can see and I've the same problem.
My TF700 has the build : US_epad-10.6.1.14.10 and the Android version : 4.2.1
I followed the instructions from this thread and now my tablet is unlocked.
I want to flash it to run under the last version of Cromi and I've read the instructions :
"- Step 1 - Coming from Stock Asus 10.6.1.x – INSTALLING TWRP 2.5 on 10.6.1.14.4/8"
Okay, so now I need to install TWRP, so I followed the guidelines : to do so, the easiest way is to install goomanager on the playstore.
Okay let's do this, I go to the playstore and I read the first line : This app is for ROOTED USERS ONLY!
Okay, so now before doing anything, I need to root my TF700, so I go back to this thread and I see that the easiest way to do it is by using motochopper but motochopper doesn't seem to work on 10.6.1.14.10.
As you said yourself previously before, I need to downgrade to 0.8 before using motochopper to root my tablet.
Okay let's do this, I search many threads and I've finally used this method :
1/ Download the previous firmware from asus website for my tablet (us version) and unzip it to get another .zip : US_epad-user-10.6.1.14.8.zip
2/ Put it into the root of my internal sd card
3/ Boot with "power + vol down" then after the splash screen put "vol up".
4/ Android start to work to add the downgrade version.... then I get the sick droid !
So, now I'm quite stuck here, I can't downgrade this way... any advices ?

You can try to install from your system, not stock recovery. You need to boot your system normally and look in the lower right corner at your notification. It should notify you that their is an update for you. When you click on it, it will walk you through the update process. You need to make sure that you have only one zip file in your directory which is the Asus firmware that you want to update.
You can also use fastboot to install the TWRP. I don't think you need to root to install a custom recovery by using fastboot if you already unlocked your bootloader. IMO, I think fastboot is easier and faster than motochopper because of rooting process...

Thanks LetMeKnow !
It was the right way to do it (Berndblb advised this also here).
It worked and I've now TWRP installed ! :victory:
But it wasn't so easy, fortunately there's plenty of help around here
I'll write here quickly how I did it, it could help someone, who knows, sharing doesn't hurt, even if I'm sure there's plenty of different methods to do it.
I found some help in this guide because the explanation under "Download - Recovery Image / Fastboot Method:" from the TWRP page is a bit rough for a beginner like me.
First I need to mention that I've Windows XP on my computer.
As you can read here there's 3 different ways to install TWRP on the TF700, the first one is the easiest one, but you need to be root, if you're unrooted like me and you want to skip rooting, let's install TWRP via fastboot.
Requirements :
- Bootloader must be unlocked. Very easy following this thread.
- ADB and Fastboot must be installed on your computer. You can follow this guide, this way you'll install them from the latest version of Android SDK and avoid any trouble.
- You should have the USB driver for your TF700 installed on your computer. I've read multiple times that that the official drivers could create some trouble, and indeed it happened to me. So you can give a try, and if this doesn't work, let's go for the Universal Naked Driver.
- Download the last version of TWRP (the newest .blob file) from here. Rename it to twrp.blob and place it under C:/Android (or C:/Android-adb, depending how you've rename your folder containing adb and fastboot.exe).
Fastboot method :
- Before starting, you want to be sure that your computer recognize well your tablet, otherwise, you'll follow a tutoriel like me, enter the final command, press enter and watch... nothing ! just a prompt command blinking in front of you, because if the script don't find any device, it will just write nothing.
To be sure of that, turn on your TF700, Plug it to your computer via a USB cable, then enable USB debugging (Tap the Build Number 7 times under Settings, About Tablet and it will show up under Dev Settings).
Now, if you're under WinXP like me, it may be possible that the pc doesn't recognize well your tablet, and you'll probably have to play with your device manager (to go into your device manager right-click on My Computer and click Properties, In the System Properties window click the Hardware tab, In the Hardware tab click the Device Manager button then look for your device, click on it, uninstall drivers, then reinstall the naked driver mentioned before for example). You may find some help here or around here in the forum.
Once you think your tablet with USB debugging enabled is well recognized by your computer, try to open a command prompt (First, press Win + R to launch the Run dialog, then enter “cmd” in the dialog box) and type “adb devices” (without quotes). The daemon will start up, and all connected devices will be listed. If your device shows up, let's continue to next step, otherwise, you should continue to play with uninstalling drivers, reboot, installing others drivers...
- Turn off & Unplug your device.
- Enter fastboot mode : Keep pressing the Power button while holding the Volume down button till the screen responds then
1) If you have an old bootloader select USB icon, press Volume up button.
2) If you have the new 4.2.1 boot loader it automatically boot into usb mode, it should be written in the upper left corner something like this :
The Device is UnLocked.
key driver not found...booting os
Android cardhu-user bootloader <1.00 e> released by "ww_epad-10.6.1.14-20130329" A03
Starting Fastboot USB download Protocol
I didn't know that and I found some answer here and here.
- Plug the TF700 to your computer via a USB cable. (and make sure no other android devices is connected to the computer)
- Open a command prompt in your computer (First, press Win + R to launch the Run dialog, then enter “cmd” in the dialog box).
Just to be sure (one more time) that your device is well recognized by the computer type “fastboot devices” (without quotes).
You should see at least one line with some numbers written.
Then, change the working directory of the command window to the directory where you had placed the TWRP recovery file (twrp.blob) using the command “cd directorylocation” without quotes (probably, “cd c:\android“).
Then, in the command prompt, enter the command: fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob
After the process finishes, You can unplug and reboot your tablet.
- Normally the TWRP recovery is now installed on your device !
To check that enter recovery mode : Boot with "power + vol down" then after the splash screen put "vol up". You should see that image, cool right ?
I don't take any credit for this quick explanation because I took all the informations from this forum (and from different other websites) and gathered them together for my own case, but I think this may help others.
A big Thanks to all the guys here who take the time to write, explain and help, that's great, keep it up the good work :good:

After the process finishes, You can unplug and reboot your phone.

It is a nice written How to do list, good job... :good:
You can add these command for fastboot to your list instead of using the power button and volume down..
> fastboot reboot-bootloader # Exit fastboot and reboot into bootloader.
> fastboot reboot # Exit fastboot and reboot to your system
Good job.. :good:

I am attempting to install a ROM on my Transformer Infinity as it pretty much sucks these days but am a complete NOOB. Have never attempted this with any of my phones or tablets, but figure I would try since these directions are so detailed. After following most the steps you have listed, I get the error below in the command prompt. Can someone please help, I tried searching XDA and Google to no avail. If possible please be as basic and speak in layman's terms b/c all this technical jargon goes right over my head. Thank you in advance!!!
Step followed:
- Then, change the working directory of the command window to the directory where you had placed the TWRP recovery file (twrp.blob) using the command “cd directorylocation” without quotes (probably, “cd c:\android“).
Then, in the command prompt, enter the command: fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob

Don't know if you cut and paste the error message or typed it up. But what I notice is that you named the recovery file .blop
It should be .blob
Another step to avoid simple errors: Place the recovery.blob file into the same directory with your fastboot file.
Right click in that directory to open a command prompt and then execute the command
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash reccovery twrp.blob

Actually yes.
Just read in another thread about someone having the same problem as you, getting the incorrect file size error.
Download the TWRP 2.5 blob and try it with that file. I have no idea why, but TWRP 2.6 may cause this error.
At least that bloke got the recovery installed that way. Once you have TWRP, it's easy to upgrade to the latest version.

The blob for TWRP 2.6.3 is bigger than the recovery partition. 2.6.1 should work.
berndblb said:
You don't have to downgrade.
After you unlocked your tablet, you can push a custom recovery through ADB or fastboot and use that custom recovery to flash a custom rom.
If you use this method you bypass rooting the stock rom altogether. Every custom rom is rooted already.

Ive had the same question as the OP, i also have a .10 version, i have a US sku, and i downlaoded said associating item but when I went but when i go to either do it with sd, or intewrnal sd, or how ever. through manual or through android, either method both resulted in error when trying to downgrade, i dont know if its because its a downgrade or what.
Ive some linux experience over the years, and have rooted and run custom roms in the past. im trying to achieve the same as the OP, fix my lag, and more options and tweaks.
I have the .zip of the rom i want whitch i found I liked the xcromi rom, so I downloaded it. so, i can put that in and name it what and how do i do the update than through the volume down + pwr combo into that menu? (not sure what its called) but i can't do sideloads because i can't havbe the ultity to sideload without rooting and i can't root with .10, so i have been trying to get past this single step all night and this morning now.
@M1ster1
Thanks for posting this guide. It doesn't do a perfect job however on the TF700t running Android build 10.6.1.14.10. Tried to use the "fix permissions" option in ROM Manager but failed due to insufficient permissions. I installed CWM Superuser and cleaned up the version of SuperSU (prefer Superuser anyhow)... updated the binaries and still no love when trying to correct the permissions, despite all tests showing the device fully rooted.
After a day of pulling my hair out I finally came across vRoot and after even longer found a guide in English. Ran that, again swapped out the Superuser that went with vRoot and again reinstalled Superuser. Used Ti to install as system app. After reboot ROM Manager was finally able to correct permissions and all is golden again.
Hi ,
My Transformer has 10.6.1.14.10 and I am trying to install TWRP thru fastboot as per "M1ster" instructions.
these are the results I see from my command prompt.

after I reboot and select RDK , i get the sick droid error,
I feel like I have missed something, hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction
Thanks

Your "twrp.blob" apparently doesn't contain a recovery - it should be around 6 to 8 MB.

[almostRUU][K2_CL]&[How To Update After Moonshine S-Off]

What you will need to succeed:
COMPUTER
USB CABLE
K2_CL (that is able to boot into fastboot)
MICRO SD CARD (2 Gb minimum)
YOUR Unlock_code.bin YOU RECEIVED FROM HTC TO UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER
WORKING FASTBOOT ENVIRONMENT
AT LEAST ONE OR TWO HOURS TIME
ABILITY TO READ AND FOLLOW THE STEPS IN THIS TUTORIAL (no skipping steps)
NOTE: ONLY YOU YOU YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES TO YOUR YOUR YOUR DEVICE.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS EXACTLY.
DO NOT CONTINUE TO THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS TUTORIAL.
This post will be used to give you a dry run on how to achieve updating your OS (Operating System) using the OFFICIAL OTA (Over The Air) released by HTC for K2_CL Boost Mobile devices that have been S-off(ed) using Moonshine.io.
Downloads will be in post #3.
Credits will be in post #4.
Okay, let's get this dry run started so everyone will have an understanding of how this is going to work.
STEP 1: Connect your phone to your computer with a known working USB cable. Remove the back (battery cover). For convenience, just leave your phone plugged into your computer and the battery cover off during this procedure. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADB (AndroidDebuggingBridge) ENABLED.
STEP 2: Download TWRP (TeamWinRecoveryProject) .img and place it in your /fastboot directory(folder) on your computer.
STEP 3: Find and place your unlocktoken that you received from HTC into your /fastboot directory.
STEP 4: Download my personal, super clean, nandroid backup and unzip it. Then place the '4.0.4_PURE_STOCK' or 4.1.2_jb.pure.stock folder in the same directory that your personal TWRP nandroid backups are.
If you have never used TWRP and this is your first time, do this, simply boot into fastboot and open a cmd(command) prompt while in your fastboot directory and type
Code:
fastboot boot twrp2.img
this will boot the twrp.img on your phone, then click backup and swipe to confirm. When done making a backup, reboot.
Now you will have a directory(folder) on your sdcard named TWRP and inside that directory you will have a folder named BACKUPS. Place the '4.0.4_PURE_STOCK' or '4.1.2_jb.pure.stock' folder, with all of its contents, here.
STEP 5: Download PL80IMG.zip NOTE: You may not be able to extract this zip. It is encrypted by HTC. So don't freak out and assume that you got a bad download or a corrupt zip. Place PL80IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard. MAKE SURE IT'S PLACED ON THE ROOT OF YOUR 'ext_sd'. Turn your phone off by pulling the battery out.(to my knowledge, it is perfectly safe to leave your phone plugged into your computer even while pulling the battery out. I left my phone plugged in the whole time I did this and I'm using my phone to post this tutorial. No damage at all ) Then boot into bootloader by holding the -vol (volume down) button and then the pwr (power) button. After it's in bootloader it will run a self check looking for different files on the root of your sdcard. And then it will find PL80IMG.zip. After it finds the zip it will load it. You will see a blue bar in the upper right of your screen. When it's done loading it will say 'parsing' and then do a whole lot of 'checks' and after its finished verifying the package it will ask you if you want to apply it. CHOOSE YES. after it applies the package it will tell you 'done' 'press pwr(power) to reboot'
Press the pwr button. NOTE: YOUR PHONE MAY NOT BOOT. This is because the PL80IMG.zip flashed a stock sense JB kernel. DON'T WORRY I did this while on ICS OS and my phone did not boot. Just pull the battery to power off your phone. NOTE: TAKE OUT YOUR SDCARD WHILE YOUR PHONE IS OFF. DO NOT REINSTALL YOUR SDCARD UNTIL INSTRUCTED. Now install your battery and boot into bootloader and choose fastboot from the menu. Verify that you have a good connection to your computer by sending cmd
Code:
fastboot devices
from the cmd prompt you opened in your fastboot directory. If it returns your serial number continue. If it returns a blank or 'no devices found' make sure your screen says 'fastboot usb' in red text.
STEP 6: Unlock your new JB (still S-off) bootloader. Send cmd
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
It will ask you if your sure you want to unlock it, use the volume rocker to select yes press the pwr button to confirm. It will then try to boot again. Just pull the battery to power off and then boot into bootloader again and you'll notice its says *tampered* unlocked. Select fastboot from the menu and send cmd
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Now select bootloader from the menu, AFTER THE BOOTLOADER IS FINISHED LOOKING FOR THE PL80IMG.zip, THEN YOU MAY INSERT YOUR SDCARD BACK INTO ITS SLOT IN THE PHONE. DO THIS NOW. Now select recovery from the menu and it will boot you into your TWRP recovery.
Select restore from the menu, and find the folder name '4.0.4_PURE_STOCK' or '4.1.2_jb.pure.stock' and swipe to confirm. (No need to wipe before, even if coming from a custom Rom) once the restore process is finished it will ask you reboot. DON'T REBOOT YET. Click on the 'home' button, then click the reboot button, then click the bootloader button. It will boot you strait into fastboot so DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON because it will check your sdcard for the PL80IMG.zip if you accidentally choose bootloader from the fastboot menu. SO AGAIN, DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON. In your cmd prompt send cmd
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Now your phone should boot into a nice fresh ICS Rom. Go into settings, scroll down to the bottom and click updates, then software updates and download and install all OTA update(s).
STEP 7: Profit.
and if you'd like to go further down the rabbit hole,
by removing
*TAMPERED*
from your bootloader
making your bootloader say
LOCKED (instead of 'RELOCKED')
and even going as far as to changing S-OFF to S-ON
a very special thanks to
@Modding.MyMind
follow instructions in thread you can find here
TUTORIAL: Remove *TAMPERED* & *RELOCKED* flag / HBoot w/o unlock_code.bin
swing by and click thanks to him!
( ¿who knows? Maybe you need to send your phone in for repair, wouldn't you want your phone to NOT have any traces of S-OFF?)
twrp2.img
4.0.4_PURE_STOCK.zip
4.1.2_jb.pure.stock.zip
PL80IMG.zip
Or you can just choose one of these zips below, and place it in your fastboot folder and send commands;
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip 4.0.4_K2_CL_America_rom.zip
If your using the "4.1.2_.....rom.zip" make sure you type the correct name to flash it.
If you get any errors just run the last command again. Then;
Code:
fastboot reboot
4.0.4_K2_CL_America_rom.zip
4.1.2_K2_CL_America_rom.zip
decrypted_k2_cl_2.06.653.6_rom.zip [
works with PL80IMG.zip method

Hey man, nice tutorial. Wanted to update for the viewers here that if you already have JB and used Moonshine to achieve S-Off for JB then this will work also. Just follow the man's steps above. ICS will be placed back on your phone (a downgrade simply). Just go into your settings on your phone and do a system update and you 'should' get the JB update (if still being pushed by the provider). Once you reupgrade back to JB again you will still have S-Off (only without moonshine), but no worries because the write protection will still be null. Now, when your phone boots up on the new JB and your lockscreen appears, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF HUMANITY, do a backup before you root or do anything else to your phone. Pull the battery, then boot into fastboot (remember the img on your ext sdcard - so be cautious prior to this). Using a computer you need to boot NOT flash the custom recovery of your choice (I recommend TWRP). The command is simple - fastboot boot recovery recovery.img. This will load TWRP or a custom recovery of your choosing WITHOUT overwriting the original recovery. Now do a backup of EVERYTHING. Once complete just reboot your phone. (and make sure you remove the img he spoke about OFF of your ext sdcard) . Congrats, you now have a PURE STOCK JB Backup. . I saw a forum on here giving such instructions I believe but better this info be available here so they will see it.

Hahaha, yea, thanks to my brother. He came by the house and he saw my PC loaded with scripts and windows and asked what I was doing. I explained what I was doing and how the initial flash successfully worked but still no root gain so then I implemented in the script to symlink the su binary and when I had finished setting up the zip again the flash started to abort in TWRP by giving me an error about the updater-binary couldn't be read and how it was driving me up the wall as I couldn't figure out what was causing it. He looked at me and told me to review the script again because if it worked before I made my changes but didn't afterwards then I obviously left something out. Sure enough, a stupid quotation mark haha. Was so relieved and stress free when the fix was made.
