Getting the chacha rooted after htcdev unlock - HTC ChaCha

Dear Members,
A lot of people including my self succesfully unlocked the htc chacha bootloader with the HTCDEV methode. We are verry happy with this developement. Unfortunally every one is trying to get there device rooted now. I tryed manny methodes from this forum but didn't succeed.
Is there anyone who can guide us step by step how to root htc chacha ( s-on but with an unlocked bootloader with the htcdev methode )?
Thx!

In this tread detailed guide to root htc chacha after unlocked you're chacha with the HTCDEV methode. THANKS TO Huff! Enjoy! Dont forget to install Superuser. Superuser will grant root permissions to apps.

A. CWM Recovery:
1. Download PH06img.zip found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1164468
2. Open PH06img.zip and extract recovery.img
3. Copy recovery.img in the Android folder used earlier for HTCDEV unlock.
4. Open CMD and cd to that folder that folder
5. Run this in CMD: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now you should have CWM Recovery installed.
If there are no errors, power off (Fast boot disabled in Power options) and then enter bootloader mode with vol down + power and select Recovery to verify the install.
B. Root:
1. Download su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
2. Copy it to the SD card
3. Enter in CWM Recovery (start the phone with vol down + power, Fast boot disabled in Power options, or battery removed first) and from bootloader select Recovery and press Power button.
3. With the arrow keys from the phone keyboard select Install from SD card and Choose zip from SD card then select su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip and press enter.
4. Press backspace until you're on the main menu of CWM Recovery and select Reboot.

There's no guide that it's 100% correct for S-ON yet.
Just follow this and it will work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184118
The CWM Recovery won't install like it says, you have to extract the image and flash it with fastboot.
Read the last few pages from the other topics, there are others that succeeded (including me).

Good news you got it working! I did try that but i failed .
Could you explain how to do this in a few detailed steps and help us out here? This would be great!

SUCCES! I will post a detailed guide soon!

No time now so just a very quick guide, if I forget something please someone correct me.

You can check the Tweet screenshot on adlx's post where HTC stated that Status was included.
In theory and in practice ChaCha and Status are the same. There are a few hardware differences (the radio for example, since US uses a different GSM bandwidth).

i want to say thank you to all the respected members.

Thank! Working 100%

Thanks, already rooted!

s-off ?

Hboot 1.10.0000 unlocked and recovery 4.0.1.0 installed and working properly but after flashing the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip :
still CHACHA PVT ship S-ON RL ...

That's normal. This procedure wont make it S-OFF. But now you have CWM recovery and root, and you can install any custom rom.

I've translate the procedure into french, it's not really the place to post that so i link it :

Hope this could help, or be share to, french people (who have problems with speaking english sometimes, like you can see).

Rooting woes :-(

Hi all,
I have recently got hold of a Desire S and updated it a couple of months ago with the standard ota update from O2 (Or branded phone)...since then I have been getting signal errors which I have read about elsewhere.
Anyway thought I would root my phone...I S-off using revolutionary, it did not appear to work the first time, it appeared to s-off the phone but I did not get prompted for the CWM download, second attempt, it informed i was s-off and to download the CWM, I clicked yes and it tried to download but nothing happens.
So as far as I can tell I am s-off but no root. I have tried gingerbreak and superoneclick both of which stall during the process and do not root my phone.
I am very new to this and not sure where to go from here to get my phone rooted.
My Hboot was 98.002 now it shows:
-Revolutionary-
Saga PVT Ship S-off RL
Hboot-6 .98.1002
If I go into recovery I just get a red triangle with an ! and have to reboot the phone.
So I am at a point where I do not know what to do to get it rooted....or can I just get a pre rooted rom and flash that over the top?
Thanks
I'd suggest that to start you change these setting on your phone
Settings->Power->Fastboot = OFF
Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging = ON
There are various links in my signature, they should all help. Download the adb&fastboot link and extract the files to your c:\temp\ directory on your PC. Then install the HTC drivers then continue and follow the instructions below:
You first need to download CWM recovery image file for this device to your PC into again the C:\temp directory.
Put the phone in Fastboot USB mode (by following instructions below
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Wait for sdcard scan to complete.
Plug in USB cord connected to the computer
Press power ONCE and Fastboot USB mode starts
Then run a CMD shell from the PC and then issue the commands into it from the directory where you have put the downloaded img file (c:\temp\)
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-saga.img
adb reboot recovery
To root you phone then
Download and then copy su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to your sdcard root
Start clockworkmod recovery
Unplug USB
Turn the device off
Hold volume down button (HOLD IT) and press power
Hboot will start.
Navigate to recovery with the vol down button.
Press power to select and enter recovery.
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back
Then reboot.
Try to download the pg88img file of cwm our 4ext you find them in the index thread.
Put the pg88img in root of your sd, reboot to bootloader and flash the file. After this the easiest way to gain root would be to flash an prerooted ROM.
Don't forget to make a backup of you're current ROM if anything fails

I feel your pain. I am replying to you to make sure you did all the steps required. Furthermore, in using "Superoneclick", which worked for me on my Samsung Fascinate, if I missed a step it didn't work. I.E - I didn 't re-boot!
@ben_pyett you sir are a lengend!!!
what you posted worked...the only slight thing I had to do different was install the htcdrivers first, as it would recognise my phone, then I could do the adb reboot recovery.
It said it failed but I continued to flash su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip and happy days, now to load up a rom!!
many thanks and also to those who replied

Glad to have been able to help.
Now take a backup using CWM so that you have a safe fall back position - just in case!
I'd then suggest updating the recovery to 4EXT which I personally find easier to use.
You'll then find all the ROMS linked within the INDEX thread
Enjoy!
just running a backup now....just waiting for it to finish then to hunt for a rom.
Will probably use rom manger and voidru, seems a popular choice and a good place to start.
Then pay the £1.56 for 4ext
Thanks again

Completely agree with you. Just wanted to point that it is not necessary to pay (thanks to madmaxx82)
Yeah, I just rooted my galaxy tab, installed lagfix etc (feels like a new piece of hardware now, it so fast!)
I first coudnt do it, because i didn't have the Samsung drivers installed (just like the HTC drivers here)
I never actually rooted my desire s manually!.
I just s-offed, then installed custom roms straight away which already come pre-rooted.

[Tutorial]Root, Unlock, Recovery and flashing a Custom ROM

Just a quick step by step tutorial to get a Custom ROM working on your One S.
Step 1: Unlock
Go on http://www.htcdev.com and create yourself an account on HTCDEV.
Download These Fastboot Files
Make a new folder on your C:/ drive called fastboot.
Extract The Zip downloaded in step 2 to the new folder
Go Here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select "All Other Supported Models" and "then begin unlock bootloader"
Yes, Tick both Boxes, Proceed
Skip up to step 8 as we have all we need for the first 7 steps
Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 10 seconds
Power your phone on by holding power and volume down
Highlight Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power
Plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
Change directory to your folder where we put fastboot files cd c:\fastboot
Type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Select & copy the text as per step 9 on the HTCDev website
Paste your identifier token into the box at the bottom and submit
You Will Very Shortly Receive an email from HTCDev with a link to the second part of the instructions and your "Unlock_code.bin" attached
Download the "Unlock_code.bin" from the email and save it to the same folder that we extracted fastboot files to in step 2
Type this into your command prompt window fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
The Display Will change on your phone, press Vol + to accept and power to confirm.
Thanks to bagofcrap24 for this part!
Step 2: Recovery
Download the Android SDK
Download the Interim CWM Touch Recovery of Paul or Official CWM of koush (HTC One S)
(Thanks Paul/koush for the Recovery!)
Place the CWM File where the fastboot.exe is (Downloaded with the SDK)
Now open the cmd and navigate to the folder where the CWM File is located
Now type:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_the_recovery.img
For Paul's:
fastboot flash recovery r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img
Step 3: Root
Make sure you are on the stock kernel!
Now root your phone with SuperSU by Chainfire, thanks a lot!
Download SuperSU from the end of the thread
Flash it with the Recovery:
Power off your device and then hold the VOL DOWN + Power to boot into the Bootloader
Navigate with VOL and Power to Recovery
Now flash the .zip:
- install zip from sdcard
- choose zip from sdcard
- select the CWN-SuperSU-v0.87.zip file and flash it
- Reboot now
Now you are able to flash any Custom ROM.

But htcdevs bootloader unlock is down atm
Really? Try again, for me the website is working.
Anyway, instead of the HTC way you could just wait for a S-OFF tool
The Site is working fine
But when u try to click "Begin unlock Bootloader" nothing happens.
I know, i should wait for a s-off tool.. but dude.. i need my root
The HTC method is good as well
Android without root is nothing..
i think the website is having problems, i have one S connected via usb with debuggins system, i open up the website and choose "All Other Supported Models" , I click begin and nothing, completely nothing happens :/
Just wait some hours
Try with internet explorer (iiik) for me it didnt work with Chrome!
Thanks for this thread showing people the way to go.
alright, just to clarify on macs use Firefox , on chrome and safari htcdev DOES NOT WORK

I think they will employ the same policy as before. In the past, it was often said that even roted / S-OFFed / SuperCID modded devices received service with no problems when it was very obvious that the problem was hardware related (screen dead, etc.)
What kind of defects they will consider "software/rooing related" is anybodys guess and could only be clarified by emailing the HTC support for your country I assume.
Ah alright. I mean, the most probable case for needing help of the htc support is any hardware related problem since software related problems can be solved on oneselfs own. But I already assume that they are quite good at relating hardware issues to the root (OC etc..)
Having some issue with the CWM right here:
I'm trying to get to the "Install zip from sdcard option", but shortly after pressing the voldown once to highlight that option, CWM kind of resets (screen goes black for a second and I'm back at option 1 ("reboot system now").
Unlock went fine and flashing CWM was not problem either - although I used the r2 from the modaco website.
And I am not sure about the kernel. Anyway to make sure I have the stock one?
(It's a HTC Dev Device)
Thanks for help in advance!

[Q] *HELP* Sensation stuck in boot loop

im trying to install this ROM on my Sensation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849 (ARHD) - the ICS version.
So im following the instructions it points to here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
So my phone was running stock gingerbread. So i follow the instructions.
I successfully S-off the phone.
Then i did the PG58IMG.zip thing --- successfully updates --- but now the phone is in boot loop?? it says there it should reboot to home screen? I can still get to the bootloader menu but recovery or any of those options dont work?
I have tried googling but all those threads get so technical. I AM A COMPLETE UTTER AND DISGUSTING NOOB.
Please can someone give me a step by step easy to understand directions to fix my phone? please please?
To be honest the same thing happened to me when i first flashed an ICS rom.
What i did was that i connected the memory card to my PC using an adapter and deleted the PG851MG file.
Then i moved on to flashing my ICS rom (Virtuous inquisiton) and it worked out quite good.
But traditionally it should boot back after flashing the firmware. It has never happened to me again.
Thats my experience. I dont thnk tat nething should go wrong, but still the phones at your own risk. Do go thru other posts in the forum b4 u do nething.

Stop everything. I'll give you a simple solution.
Follow this step by step.
WRITE SUPER CID [YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE]-
1. Download adb tools here: download for WINDOWS or download for LINUX or from the attachments below
2. On your pc click on your local disk C: Drive (or D: drive for some) (WINDOWS users: Start > My computer > Local Disk (C)
3. Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure it doesn't create another folder in the adb folder when extracting
Manually put the phone in the bootloader/hboot mode
Navigate to fastboot by pressing volume down and pressing power button to select (power off > vol down + power on)
It will take you to the fastboot bootloader screen on your phone
Connect your phone via USB
Your Screen should now read fastboot USB
1. enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111"
2. enter the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader (Wait for it to reboot the bootloader)
3. enter the command "fastboot getvar cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]
4. enter the command "fastboot reboot"
5. You can now flash any ROM you like.
Quoted from here.

Updating the firmware
This step is MANDATORY otherwise you ROM will not boot. Please take a look at the firmware thread so you can understand what you are about to do.
After updating the firmware you will have the 3.32 firmware with unlocked bootloader. Which basically means that you can use advanced fastboot commands, such as: flash new radios and splashscreens
Download any firmware from here.
Copy the PG58IMG.zip file you've downloaded to the root of the sdcard. Root of the sd card mean that you can't put the file inside any folder. Also, you can't rename the file. Please keep the PG58IMG otherwise the bootloader won't recognize it.
Power off your phone or remove the batt and put it back again.
Hold volume-down + power button to boot into the bootloader
Wait for the firmware package to be found and confirm to update as prompted
Once it completed successfully and prompted you to reboot, pull the battery out.
Connect your SD card to the PC and remove the PG58IMG.zip file.
Quoted from here
.
Click to collapse
Download the zips for SuperWipe & your ROM and put them on your memory card.
Hold volume-down + tap the power button once to boot into the bootloader.
Press vol down to highlight Recovery and press the power button to select it.
Next, select Install zip from SDcard and touch to navigate to the location of the Super Wipe zip and select it.
Once it is done, you will be rebooted to Recovery. Again choose Install from SD card and this time navigate to the ROM and select it.
After the install is finished, go back to main recovery menu and select reboot.
That's it, you're good to go.
This will work, I'm a 100% positive on that.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...T4 recovery and custom ROM on HBOOT 2.00.0002
I found a list and changed it to my needs. It give you a way to do it... But remember, this was my way... You may need to do things different... So Read, Read, and again READ!!!!!
1. to not avoid warrancy ( Dont use htcdev unlock!)
2. download adb tools http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
3. install htc sync for drivers then disable/uninstall htc sync. (windows)
4. check your phone software and hboot version on boot menu (GUIDE LINK)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
5. downgrade to oldest RUU with hboot 0.90.xxx something if don’t want use htcdev unlock
1.28.401.1 RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.080 5U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed.exe
YOU MAY NEED A DIFFERENT RUU!!!!!
6. to do this it depends on software on phone.
if its new like 2.11.xx-> use tacoroot guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
if its older like 2.10.xx use the zergrush guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331&highlight=zergrush (deze heb ik moeten gebruiken)
7. use revolutionary guide to S-Off And root ( this is possible only in oldest version of original RUU).

8Update hboot naar eng hboot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679338
9. install 4ext recovery touch. do your backups.
We're going to install EXT4 recovery. But first download ''4EXT_Recovery_v2.2.7_RC5.zip'' and extract the recovery.img file to the folder where you installed fastboot and adb. If you followed the tutorial in step 1 the folder will be ''C:\android-tools''
Now make sure Fast Boot is turned off on your phone. Go to ''Settings > Power > Fast Boot'' to turn it off. Unplug your phone from your computer, it's time to turn of your phone and boot into your bootloader.
Press Volume Down Button and Power Button at the same time to boot into recovery. Now connect your phone to your computer and select fastboot.
(Power button to select, Volume Down/Up to navigate)
Go to start->run-> type cmd and press enter. A command prompt will now appear.
Type:
cd c:\android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img [press enter]
EXT4 recovery is now installed on your phone. Turn off your phone in bootloader menu.

10. download preferrable custom rom. Copy it to SDCARD root.
11. Flash custom rom. ( GUIDE LINK )
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using Recovery (Method 1)
(You can use your default recovery from Revolutionary tool but I recommend using 4EXTRecovery)
1. Copy your custom ROM "zip" file to your SD card (Root directory).
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by holding the power button and the volume down button together.
4. Once you see the white screen, choose "Recovery"
5. Make a full wipe/format and clear all cache.
6. Choose "install from sdcard/zip file" and then choose your Custom ROM zip file from your SD card to flash your Custom ROM.
Optional: If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, just flash it like you are flashing your custom ROM(Step 6). Just do it before you flash your new ROM.
12. Enjoy and have a beer!
-when using Win7 you can start CMD in specific folder (avoid 5-10 cd's or long/path/to/folder) by holding shift+right click/open command window here)
A bit different approach from all the posters above:
If you really read the threads, and the guides you saw aren't understandable to you - then the best guide for rooting is: stay away from rooting.

Can't argue with that statement, saying that most of what I read made sense as I did it
