Devices to do reviews on then keep?!? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys!
I've seen on a lot of occasions that companies like HTC and Google and LG send people phones and items to review, then let them keep it.
I'd love to get into it, but hows it possible? I've seen PocketNow and other YouTube channels with reviews of phones... I want to do reviews but apparently you need to get sponsored or such.
Hows this possible? I'd love to do it LOL

If you're in it to get free phones then its never going to happen.
You need to learn how to operate that type of business first. No one its going to send you anything unless you have sway with a moderate community.
In short you have to have connections and influence. You also have to be knowledgeable in the mobile industry etc etc etc.

start by reviewing phones you own, and borrow phones from friends and family and review you them. build a good reputation for yourself and you'll be good to go

Cool! I should do that, I loved reviewing PC games, now I should try mobiles

Got a GSII at 2 yr contract price

Just an FYI,
After some *****ing to retentions about the non-functionality of this phone, I managed to get a new phone at 2 yr contract price. I'm on my 3rd G2X and I have just about every problem imaginable - reboots, shutdowns, calls often don't work, data often doesn't work, etc. If you're frustrated with your G2X but don't want to shell out 600 bucks, it's worth a shot. I told them that the guy at my local tmobile store told me that I might as well stop switching out for replacements since "they're all like that." Basically just kept stressing that they sold me a broken phone, and I just wanted a working one. Good luck!
ooohhhwhhooooo good for you pal.
this is a g2x threat ''FYI''
i got my g2x since it release date and i never had problems. let see how your GS2 will work for ya. its still a samsuck
and i had several problems with the old galaxy s versions. and again samsuck never did nothing about it
I might give this a try... I'll get the GSII... Sell it, then buy another G2x.
Haha good idea. I was about to say how the g2x is better and they g2x does not like him.

I was just trying to help out...I figured some other people might be frustrated with their g2x's and would appreciate this option. If you are happy with yours, that's great - this thread (with a d) is not for you. I don't see how you can call Samsung out for not addressing problems when that is clearly the issue with LG here - with quality control if nothing else.

This was probably a joke, but they didn't even ask for my g2x back. You could just do it and sell the GSII, which would have a much higher resale value I'd imagine
It probably has a higher resell value. G2x is very underrated

Yeah, I'm actually bummed I couldn't get a working g2x. The gsii seems way too big to me, and the build quality is pretty ****ty. But seeing that I had to get SOME other phone, it was the best option

If they sent it to you, you must send back the g2x or they will follow up with a bill for the full price of the phone. I promise. It will happen.

I posted it here because I am coming from a g2x, and it was specifically my complaints about none of my g2xs working that allowed me to get a really early upgrade. Again, just trying to help. I know there are a lot of people who are frustrated with the g2x's unreliability.
Wow lots of hate for a company that gives phones to developers, hired Cyanogen, and garnered enough interest from Google to create the Nexus a second time. I loved my Nexus S.
I kinda liken the G2x to an AMG Mercedes. Sexy piece of metal and glass, a thrill when working correctly, but loses half its value when you drive off the lot.
I like keeping my phones for 6mo or so and reselling to subsidize the next phone. G2x depreciated faster than any other phone I've owned. Feel like kinda a chump for picking one up on 4/20. I could have waited 2 months and bought it $250 cheaper. Grrrr....

This wasn't a goodbye post, or a g2x-slamming post. I was simply letting people know that if they are frustrated with their g2x, there might be an option they weren't aware of. There was no jubilation or negative comments. Are people so insecure (about their cell phones of all things) that I can't even mention the name of another phone? As I said before, there are many pluses of my g2x - higher pixel density, better screen size, vanilla os, hdmi out, better build quality, etc. The one big minus is that it doesn't work a lot of the time, just like the previous g2x's I've had. If your phone works, then great. This post was not meant for you.

Donations for a Thunderbolt for Wild Child for Development of new ROM

Hi Guys
So I bought my wife an Inspire and have been playing around with Wild Child's ROMs over in the Inspire Forum. I think he does fantastic work and so far these are some of the most stable and fastest ROMs I have seen on any Android device that I have used. Check the thread for reviews and feedback from other users.
I spoke with him about developing a ROM for the Tbolt, but obviously he is on ATT and has an Inspire. However, he said if he had one he would definitely get working on it.
I would like to start taking donations to buy him a Tbolt so he can develop a ROM for us to use.
I think we can buy a good quality used one in the $150 range, so it wouldn't take too much to get him started. If we can get enough to buy one ( I will throw in too), I will gladly find one locally in Utah and pay for the shipping to to him.
If there is enough interest on this and we get some posts, I will put up a paypal link for this.
Thanks and please post your thoughts so we can get working on this.
JimmyUT
I think you would be better off having the developer come and express interest in attaining a donated thunderbolt. I am not sure how many people would just send money to you in good faith since Christmas is right around the corner, couldn't hurt to have some extra shopping money. But good luck.

So if I was trying to scam you, why do you think I would put in a developers name who is a member and respected developer on this site? Seriously?
I discussed this with Wild Child and he asked me to do it this way. You can confer with him if you don't believe me.
You can also check out my business website.
utahpistol.com
I am certified by the state to teach concealed weapons classes and if there is even a blip on my record or a complaint i could loose my certification and my business. Do you really think that is worth $150 to me?? I. come on gentlemen. Not everything in this world is a scam, and you should have realized that when I put in a devs name that is here on the site and accessible.
But thank you for bringing negativity to my thread as I was just trying to do something for the greater good of the xda community.
Wild Child has a donations link setup. I'd say if you wanted to donate to him why not donate through his link? Also, can you point us to some of his work with the Inspire? I don't see much development for the Inspire.
I was asked to possibly develop for you guys on the tbolt....if you look here,I took over the ROM from someone else...all the proof of my work is [email protected] etc....this wasnt a scam, and for those who gave negative replies...not very nice....jimmyut was only trying to give you guys a stable usable rom for this device....but since you guys/girls want to bash the man for something legit....thats ok ill pass.... Mods can you please delete this thread....Thank you for the confidence and compliments of my work jimmy....ill see you in the inspire forums...
WC
No worries. Sorry it didn't work out because of the negative attitudes of some of the members on here. You would have been a great asset to the Tbolt team.
Maybe I will just buy one myself and send it to you so I can have my own custom one of a kind ROM...
Thanks again for the willingness to help out. I wish this whole community was more like you.

New Purchase :: Nexus 7 or TF700

Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on XDA so for give me if this is in the wrong place. As It covers both devices and is not related to development activities as such I thought this would be the correct location.
Anyway I have had my eye on the TF700 for quite a while then the nexus 7 was released though I am still leaning in the direction of the TF700 but I want to get other peoples opinions on the matter, especially from anyone who has had a chance to use both. So please if anyone has experiance with two device I would really like to hear your comments, and or suggestions.
Also does anyone in the UK now what shops are demoing these devices, i will be checking out my local carphone warehouse this weekend to see if they have the nexus 7 as I don't think anywhere has the TF700 in the UK yet.
Anyone got insider info on what shops maybe stocking the TF700?
Thanks for your time and will see you on the forums.
Cheers
Hey there, I think you may want to put this in Q and A but I think a mod will be about to do it anyway. And there are many threads dedicated to x or y type question.
Welcome back to XDA if you haven't had a welcome back yet.
Anyway, I would say get the nexus 7. Support and updates for that would be through the roof. It is also great value for money.
Sorry If that isn't what you wanted. Hope you enjoy your purchase anyway.
Please use the **Device Suggestions Thread**

Thanks will ask the question in the thread mentioned above; If a Mod wants to kill this one that be fine by me.
Get the nexus 7
nexus 7!!! obviously
Well answer the question yourself by answering these questions.
Do you want a bigger screen or better portability?
Do you want something with a large memory capacity without anything hanging off it? Or cloud if you have good bandwidth?
Do you want more power for future games ie 1-2 years from now?
What ports do you need?
Do you want frequent updates, and lots of development?
Do you want to spend the extra cash?
Both are good devices, but you're comparing apples with oranges, so pick a fruit

I would pick the Nexus 7.

Leaving for Atrix HD

Yesterday I went to Best-Buy and bought the Atrix Hd for $50, not including tax, cases, etc. From some of the negative reviews this phone has gotten I simply think it's amazing. It's swift, doesn't lag at all . It's what the atrix 2 should have been in my opinion. But I will help to continue to test ROM's in the community here. Thanks For everyone's help here, and also Jim for all his work to get ics out and also the rest of the developers . Thanks, Cheers.
well, you love moto phones

[SANCTUARY] Ex-Desire S Users Hangout Lounge

Hello,
I've created this thread and named it appropriately [SANCTUARY] for those users that have previously owned a Desire S (and still may do) and have since moved on to to using another device. Anyone who spent time in this forum may as I've done find life outside it a very tedious place.
This was my first Android device, which I still own (as does my wife), I've always greatly appreciated the attitude in this forum and found it a safe, friendly haven especially when compared along side the chaos and carnage that can be found in the other flag ship device areas! We've been fortunate here and have mostly escaped endless trolls, pointless bickering, needless aggressive sarcasm and have historically required minimal need for moderation.
Many of this forums founding and contributing members have more recently moved on to using a variety of other main stream flagship devices (commonly the HTC One X or SGS 2/3 ) no doubt we will all move in time, but, with endless existing Sense ROMs, recently its first Sense 4.1 ROM being released not forgetting AOSP/CM10/AOKP ICS & JB ROMs still being perfected the device has plenty of life in it yet.
This thread is primarily intended as a place where those people who have moved away from the DS can come to ask questions and receive answers without being crowded out or shouted down as I've found to be the unfortunate general behavior in the mainstream flagship forums which are populated by a great deal more uncivilized users.
This isn't intended to be another [OFF-TOPIC] thread, so please continue to use the standard DS OT thread for that [OFF-TOPIC] Desire S Users Hangout Lounge for that.
EDIT: It appears that the moderators have seen to close all OFF TOPIC threads see their justification here.
If this thread succeeds that it should hopefully be inhabited by a large number of Ex-DS users and therefore users who will have a great deal of DS relevant knowledge, so new DS users are more than welcome to come to ask questions....although primarily I'd prefer the Yes/No type questions only, as if your question requires a lengthy response, its probably worthy of its own thread in the Q&A section (so create a new one - but try searching first!).
As an initial starting point, why not attempt to follow the form of brief introduction (although I reckon this will be mostly unnecessary) and let us know what device you are on now and then any question, statement or recommendation you have...
I'll start off -
Hello, I'm Ben (obviously!)
I'm planning on buying an N4 tomorrow night, I won't be alone there as I believe several other current DS users are planning on doing the same, I'm hoping that this thread can become a the haven for us all!
Ben, as enigmaamit said, you shouldn't jump the gun. Wait for a month (or at least a week) and see if there are any major flaws in the device. Not many devices come out without one, and this is LG

I hear you shrome99, but at that price I'm still jumping ship, when you consider that the N4 is Approx £200 cheaper than the equivalent other flagship devices (ie HTC One X+ or i9305) it will have to be significant issues for me to regret it! (famous last words ) Although I won't be daft enough to sell the DS anytime soon, so if there are issues then I'll still have that, although as foolish as it may be I want to be on board day 1 with a new flagship device for a change (much against my my normal better judgement!).
Makes sense It's been getting glowing reviews from all sites, I'm sure it'll be awesome.
Hello guys! Most of you probably know me or at least recognise the name....
DS was my 1st android device which I loved dearly (and still do) although it has now been sold.
Currently I own a galaxy s2 which even though I've had it only 2 months looks as though it will soon find itself on eBay to make way to get mighty N4! However I plan to hold back a week or 2 after release to get a better picture of the real life use of the phone (all his shiz re thermal throttling has got me spooked!) 99% sure I will be getting it very soon though, just awaiting some user fb from new users..... Do I really need to introduce myself? I'm sure that most of the guys/gals (are there any of those) who come to this thread will know me
The DS was also my first smart-phone and I still have it right now. It's a bit scuffed and I've replaced both the touch-screen and the LCD (butter-fingers), but she means a lot to me and I learnt a lot through playing with her. When I got the DS I was looking at several models, but I'm glad I made the choice I did as it meant I met some really good people on here.
As you probably know, I got myself an LG Optimus 4X HD which I am really chuffed with. I know that it is a locked bootloader, but I was actually after a phone to use as a phone and the contract deal was too good to refuse. I will almost certainly be getting myself an N7 + 3G in the near future as I can't root the company one I'm with Eyahl - it may be a treat to myself as I've got the big 40 coming up in a few weeks :silly:
