[Q] JPKPH Root i9003 - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

So I just updated my i9003 to JPKPH, released in Feb 2012 according to sammobile, and I have realized that there is no specific root.
I found the Amit cfroot which was last updated a few days before this ROM was released, so I'm not sure if it'll work and I can't afford to get my phone bricked again this week.
I was wondering if any i9003 Gingerbread root would work, or if any i9003 2.3.6 root would work, or if the Amit root should work. I would appreciate any experienced response.
I have searched the forum for answers and didn't find what I need. I'm sorry if I'm being redundant.
Thanks.
PS: I've been a reader of this forum for a short while and I love the work you guys (and girls?) do.

Amit's CF-Root should work for you!
Flash the Universal VersioN!

Hey got the same firmware you got there. I am scared too. So would you please be the first man to do it. Then Reply here after for what has happened. By the way how do we unroot if we used odin for flashing (amit.bagarias)?

Un-rooting?
Just re-flash the firmware

Hi Friends,
I also updated from 2.3.4 (JPKP5) to 2.3.6 (JPKPH).
I used Utter Chaos Kernel 3009 for Touch Based CWM. No problems so far.
Download this file UC-KERNEL-v09-3009-XXKPQ-GT-I9003_PDA.tar from the link below and Flash it with Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357747

So, I went ahead with the Amit root, and it went smoothly. I just flashed the tar as PDA with Odin, the phone restarted twice. Next I installed the ext4 apk, which went well.
What no one has said explicitly is that the apk is to change the filesystem of the partitions for better performance. It's totally safe and I've already noticed quicker response from my phone.
Thanks, bangalorerohan.
marshygeek, the Amit root works. Go ahead and do it. As for unrooting, as bangalorerohan said and as is quite a noob task, all you need to do is reflash the JPKPH firmware and you'll be unrooted. You won't lose your settings or apps or anything.

Ive successfully rooting my i9003jxkp3. But havent used the CWM with that apk file under tha AMIT bagarias.Tar hmmn im relieved after succeeding the rooting process maybe im contenented now.
How to use that apk file in case i will use it someday? And what are the effects?

As I said earlier, the apk file changes the filesystem of the partitions. The change is from ext3 to ext 4 and the effects are speed improvements.
How to apply it:
1. Copy the apk to your phone.
2. Run the apk and install the ext4 app.
3. Open the app.
4. Select the change.
5. Reboot.

[Q] Rom/kernel installing

Just rooted my captivate which was recently upgraded to Froyo through the official Att release. I'm an exteme rookie when it comes to all this, so I'm looking for some help. I want to install a new rom/kernel. Done some research and I'm thinking of trying Cog4. As I said, I'm rooted, I have titanium backup and rom manager. I'm using one click lag fix, which from my research, everyone says is useless, and that voodoo is the way to go. So the question is, where can I get step by step instructions on the easiest way to load the new rom. Can anyone suggest a better rom? What ever your answer is, remember to dumb it down. I'm a chef not a computer guy. Much thanks for the help. I'm loving learning about all this.

Make sure you disable lagfix before you flash.

Disabling oclf also means installing ext2 tools (just got good measure).
Good luck!
I did my first rom flash last week and chose Firefly due to reliability and smoothness. I read all of the threads about each of the roms for several months and read how people liked them plus features each offered. It will really come down to what you want/need in a rom. Besides using xda, I googled flashing roms for captivate and found many videos, etc. that helped guide me along the way. I watched countless hours to make sure I understood not only one way but many to install a rom. Just remember, save your data before you do anything else. Use titanium backup. It is great. Don't assume everything will go okay.
If you are running 2.2 Froyo stock you probably will have to understand how 3E works. If you don't know what this is, search for it on these forums! You have to change this setting before flashing a rom. Good luck!

froyo has 3e recovery.... ugh... again with this today... good thing i bookmarked it...

you researched OCLF and other stuff correctly so ill help you.
from stock
root / ( & allow non-market apps via oneClickRoot 1.8 if you need to sideload tibu or rootexplorer.)
fix 3e recovery (root explorer method best)
no OCLF.
tibu backup user apps and green system files (green ones ok between different roms)
copy your new rom.zip to sdcard root renamed UPDATE.zip
boot into stock recovery > reinstall package!
tibu restore all
done!
your new rom will have a kernel with CWM built in. no need for rom manager or the CWM update.zip just to flash the rom. rom zips now do a wipe as well.
If the next thread I open ends up being about 3e recovery I'm going to boycott both q&a and general... TRusselo you with me?
I used a different method to fix 3E recovery, did not know about the root explorer method but can't find the link now. I placed the file in pda on odin and put my phone into download mode and placed it on my phone. That was the first time I used odin but it was very easy for me. Would be very interested to try it with root explorer if the need arose.

congrats you just flashed a kernel!
oh your not the op. but anyway this is how i do it.
i guess you can root then root explorer the 3e recovery then rom manager then flash but how do you root before you fix 3e, doesn't a meathod that doesnt use recovery require a computer anyway? seems like a lot of work and if you are at the computer anyway odin flashing a cwm kernel seems way better. oh well.
Here is the method I used to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
It didn't require a fix for 3E since I wasn't flashing a rom but it was painless. I did a lot of research and found the way I thought would be easiest for me to root and flash a rom. The great thing is there are many ways to do it so you really have to not be looking to get one that doesn't work.

Kinda the same idea here , but I use kernel flasher (i know some say it's a bad thing, but I've never had a problem that wasn't because of my own stupidity).
The only reason I don't use Root explorer or other ones like it is because I only have one phone and can't afford to really mess something up. I play around with Linux on some of my computers but I have more than one and the one I practice code on is a play computer. I think it is good to learn at least some of the coding but for an inexperienced flasher they should either wait until they learn code then flash or use an easier method if they are dead set on rooting and romming their phone.

[Q] So I think it is time to root this thing Can someone help out this noob

So I waited for the GB update and I like it but I think it is time to root this phone. I want to stress that I have had this phone since a little bit after it came out about two weeks after and it has run like a champ from day 1. No problems at all so when I updated to gb it was actually a downgrade in some ways like the camera but I definitly like gb because of the text editing but I havent noticed any improvement in battery life or speed or signal or GPS but All thouse things were great before and they are great now.
So I am running GB 2.3.3 withthe july 15 baseband and kernel 2.6.32.9 and I know it is different to root but I dont fully uinderstand it so if someone can post a detailed guide with as much explanation as possible so I understand what I am doing I would greatly appriciate it. I assume you cant get NV flasher from the market (I Havent looked) and what is cwm or cmw and if I flash a new rom will I loose the new baseband? Or can I get root permissions and keep stock GB? Tahnk you for all your help
First read the sticky at the top of the Android Development page. That sticky basically explains everything you will need to know, step by step.
In summary though....
Step 1 - NVFlash (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847)
Step 2 - Download Xboarders Rooted OTA.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748)
Step 3 - Boot into Clockwork Recovery
Step 4 - Install Zip from SD Card - the Zip you downloaded above
Voila you have rooted GB 2.3.3 with new baseband.
An alternative that I would suggest would be Eaglesblood 1.06 GB 2.3.3 though, smoothest ROM on the boards IMO and based on GB 2.3.3

I've tried both Roms and I would have to sway that Xboarder's Tweaked Rom is the best GB update 2.3.3 Rom.

Does swype work on that rom as phone just took a dump with swype beta. First reboot in over two months just now.

Follow the advice above. I flashed a rom for the first time today.
Does the Netflix app work on xboarder's rom? I'm having issues with HDMI on CM7 going out about every 5 minutes but coming right back. I really need the netflix app for travel.
+1 on xboarders. Runs smooth and has all of the stock features

thanks guys that was what I thought. So it really is that easy? What actually gives it the root? is it the xboarders rom? I am going to ask alot of questions because I want to understand how it actually works so please bear with me. It sounds like it actually got easir to root with this update no? It seems like NVflash is a app or program that lets me put the rom on my sim card should I go internal or external? I have a whole bunch of external cards with diffewrent capacitys and the one i use now is 16 gig. Then clockwork recovery is a program that is already on the dvice I dont know if it is part of android or what but it is alrady there right? It lets me choose wether I want to recover or make a backup of roms or install new ones correct? Then when I put the tweeked rom on it has something in it hat roots the phone magically.
Please let me know what I am right about and what I am not right about and give me the correct answers because I really want to know I am a nosey motherfer

So According to the thread in this forum titles "how to get the new baseband" the rooted version of the new rom does not contain the new baseband. Or is that the leaked gingerbread that came out a few months ago way before the update came out? He is not talking about xboarders rom right? If I do what was suggested here I will in fact have the new baseband and 2.3.3 rooted right?
Charlie
correct

If you have the new baseband now no roms will change that.
The roms do not include the baseband .

I flash from my external SD Card. You just need to decide where you want to install from, and then make sure you set up NVFlash with the correct support, external or internal.
Not sure of the exact terminology, but I think the procedure itself would be called to NVFlash ClockworkMod. NVFlash is the procedure to install CWM, while CWM is the program that you will run via Volume Down + Power when you boot up. CWM 4.0.0.2 will boot up and from there you will be able to flash roms, backup and restore Nandroids.
Ah that makes sense Now I see CWM stands for Clock work mod. See I was thinking CWM is a rom I actually thought it stood for cyogen mod I just couldnt figure out the W. So when I flash CWM it contains the root permissions already is that how it works?
So I should use nvflash to install cwm then I should probally make a backup of my stock rom. Also If I just install or flash CWM and not flash a new rom then Will my phone be rooted stock? or do I have to flash the xborders rom to gain root?
Thanks alot guys

CWM doesn't "contain" root permissions, it just allows you to flash any ROM into the phone, rooted or otherwise. The Xboarder ROM is pre-rooted, along with most of the others.
THANK YOU!
I too am a noob and was a little confused. I'd search the forums and come up with too much info. Plus, some terms used on this forum are slightly overloaded (in the C++ context) from the classic meanings, like "ROM" and "baseband". Those terms as used here do not mean exactly what they meant 20 years ago.
I'm sure I need to read more on app dev (but I have too many hobbies already), but I'm confused about the layers of s/w. As a noob, I would think the layers would be BIOS or maybe BSP, Linux, Android. So I don't understand:
1) where does the clockwork mod fit within the layers?
1a) nvdia nvflash installs new drivers in the Linux layer?
2) what is contained in the ROM image? A new version of Linux, andriod, nvdia drivers, baseband?
3) Is there a BIOS/BSP, or is all register access done in Linux drivers?
I'm not looking for a developers level answer to these questions, more of the readers digest version of the answers.
Since I'm having black screen of death (I believe referred to here as "SOD"), on two phones, I'd like to understand more, to figure out if this problem is h/w or s/w. I am definitely leaning towards s/w problems and my wife and I would love to keep these phones.
Thanks again.

Continuing off of what Spyvie said, you do need to flash xboarder's rom to gain root, (more like repeating what he said). As for nvflash, this should make things a bit easier. tgagunman made a nice one click feature that if you follow the directions, should be easier to follow. You will get clockwork mod recovery, it will be nvflashed, but it's a lot easier for a non-techie to use.

I want to thank everyone who chimed in you guys have been really good to me Bob has some really good questions also and I hope this thread can help you out bob. That is why I started this thread for people like me who are really good with computers and like to mess around but don't quite understand phones. Every time something goes wrong with my PC I go to the forums and I fix it myself then I feel good. (And I have had some real disasters on my PC I have come back from)
Anyway I will be doing this procedure soon as I feel confident that I can do it and I see there is a fix for unbricking phones. One last question before I hit the green light: Can it be unrooted just in case I have to send it back for warantey issues and can CWM be uninstalled? I suspect that since the ROM is pre-rooted that all I would have to do is format and install my original ROM then uninstall CWM is that on point or no? And Again THANKS TO ALL WHO CHIME IN WITH THE ANSWERS AND I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE OTHERS TO CHIME IN WITH THERE QUESTIONS.

Okay so I checked out the links. So I gather that step 1 has to be skipped now because super1click does not work. So we can just NVflash CWM which looks easy enough. Now I have winzip on my computer will that work for extracting .rar files? I am pretty sure it will but I want to make sure. And I am going to shut off user control permissions and I use MS security essentials for my Anti virus so I am thinking of shutting that off for this procedure would that be a wise thing and is there anything else that I should do. I am not a computer expert but I am not a idiot either I am just inexperienced. Thank you guys

You can restore you Nandroid of the preroot OTA, or you can unroot with the unroot zip that Xboarder provided in his link.

no, there is nothing else you need to do to your computer. The link provided by the brother above (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847) is where you need to be. Skip the one click root and go straight to NV flash. It will guide you through installing the nvidia drivers you need. TGA_Gunnman has is laid out really nice and easy to follow and the program he put together (one click clm recovery nv flasher) is really simple to understand and use. he also has another post out there (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715) that is also helpfull. Once you get nv flash done make sure you copy the rom you want on your sd card. IMO Xboarders is very nice and smooth. You will hold down volume down and power together until you see the android screen. Then in the menu use vol keys to move to backup and restore and use power to select. Then move to yes and run the backup. then you can wipe data/factory restore. Then wipe cache. Then go to advanced and wipe dalvic and batt stats. Then go back to "choose zip from sd" and find your rom zip and select it. It will run for a while and tell you when its done, Then go to advanced again and fix permission. After that just go to reboot option and let it reboot. It may take a little longer the first time, just let it go. When it reboots you will have a rooted 2.3.3 with the new baseband you just updated to. After that go to the market and get Titanium Backup and run a backup of all your apps and data. From there your pretty much good to start flashing away. Have fun, Good luck

I just read the other forum saying that the kernel build date is different than the leak. I had not seen that previous to our conversation. The tar for the stock KK4 I provided is from the leak update. I am still working on decrypting the kies update I obtained from the Samsung server. Glad its working, let us know if you experience any weird issues.

I thought that as well since the build.prop had the same date. But someone in the other thread said the kernel was a different build date. If it works, awesome!
UPDATE
It has been working great guys!
I installed BusyBox and installed all my apps with TB.
So happy!
The version listed in the build.prop was different between the leak and AT&Ts release at least when i checked before and after my update, but it is possible my experience waa unique. Regardless, there was not enough of a difference between the kernels other than that to say that they are in fact different in way other than that. I will say that i have been running root via the old fugu method and the leaked kernel since the day it came out and it has been flawless. I still have noticed increased stabilty on the official vs leaked but have no idea why as i restored all my apps and settings the same as before.

official 2.3.5 gingerbread Cappy w/Root
I followed the instructions in the OP.
Thank you
After doing some research I decided this was the cleanest way to go, I'm fairly happy with stock roms minus the bloatware. Just my personal preference since I don't want to put a lot of time into trying different roms, at least not at this time. Only thing I didn't check was the kernel version from the official compared to after this process. I read some posts that the leaked was the same as the official rom but then another person noted that the official version seemed to be a little less buggy/stable. Maybe just a software/settings issue and not kernel. Not sure. But I am restoring my titanium backup right now loading the apps w/out data to prevent any conflict. I am also being very selective about what system data I restore just as a precaution.
To enter download mode easily, I used a command prompt to execute "adb reboot download" from an adb folder i copied out of SuperOneClick. I moved the folder to a more convenient location for accessing it from the command prompt, and to keep files and tools organized together.
One note about my experience with the official gingerbread 2.3.5 release.
I was running stock/official 2.2 rooted and gcalender would only sync or display my default "account name" calender. After using Kies mini to upgrade to 2.3.5 I thought it would be fixed since that was suppose to be one of the issues addressed in gingerbread. To my surprise even after syncing the calendar options did not change. I was saddened, so I performed a factory reset wiping all my apps and data, however! After setting up my google account through the first run/start up wizard (not sure it matters but what I did) and all my calendars show up. I guess the only question left, regarding calendar sync is will it continue to add new calendars as I add them on the server.
Time will tell, Good luck!
Thank you! I upgraded to the new gingerbread this morning via kies and quickly realized I had lost my phone being rooted! I followed your instructions exactly and rooted with no issues! Thanks you again!
I used this method today and it worked great! Thanks alot!
I just install Corn kernel with odin. Then go to recovery and in one of the menus are the option to install root.
Reboot and done.

Rooting should not clear your apps or anything.
Please delete!
I thought I was in the LG O2X thread because this thread was recommended whole I was trying to start a new one!
Sorry.
Ok thanks for the info! I was worried about that, and thanks again for the link to Odin

You should of read through the forums before clicking install... Currently there is no way to root the OTA 2.3.6 unless you used 4ever root beforehand. You can downgrade back to 2.3.5 by following instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477929 After you can root. If you really want to you can flash the new stock deodexed 2.3.6. zip lfaber06 just put out, but I wouldn't recommend it just yet, because it has some issues where no external buttons work.
so nice of you ..... just trying...now.....
Here's how I did it... It took me a while to get everything straight, but this will make it much easier for you:
Downgrade to 2.3.5 from 2.3.6:
1) Follow the instructions for flashing an fxz here.. BUT before you do that, read this guide about downgrading. It is important that you replace those files in the fxz or it won't work. I made that mistake.
2) Flash the fxz
3) Root using zergrush or whatever you want.
4) Now use a root explorer to replace the lines of code written about in the second link.
5) Update OTA
6) ROOTED 2.3.6 YESSS

You should use the search function of the forum. All of the questions you asked have been discussed many times and I find it hard to believe that you looked because many of the questions you asked are stickied or are still on the first page. I'm telling you this because there is a lot of information to cover on your questions (many of them could possibly have several different answers) and the easiest way for you to get all of the information you need is to look at what people have already said and done. There is even a "One Stop Shop ICS" thread that is stickied in the DEV section. Nope, I can't believe you even tried...but good luck and read as much as you can. Short-cuts will only get you a bricked phone.
well i have read alot and i think that may be my problem. i have read alot on android 4.0.3 and i have found info that the nexus got it first and this update is way different for the skyrocket. like the user interface is way different. cant seem to find a straight answer on it as people seem to be split on the user interface. thats why i wanted someone who has actually installed it to kinda point me in the right direction on some of my questions. i dont mind reading info but im new to this sight and am just figuring out how to search for info on xda. typing questions in google has gotten me only more confused. ive had good luck on xda in the past and trust the info on this site above any other. if you could copy and paste some links i dont mind doing my own reasearch as a matter of fact i had rather that way i can download what i need as i go..... thanks
ok i found the all things ics forum you were talking about so im gonna read all that info and if i still have any questions ill come back and ask. if anyone has any links to info they feel might help feel free to post them. also if you know of any better ics roms than this leaked one for the skyrocket feel free to post links on those. thanks for pointing me in the right direction now maybe i can find enough info to make up my mind on whether to flash this rom or wait for a better one or the official release.. thanks again...

Start from the top and work your way down. If you have an I727 I would definately only research ICS on the I727 and not any other phone. As you said, they are different. You will also find that there are no 100% answers on a lot of your questions. What works on one phone might act a little different on another. That is why it is better to read and be prepared...just in case.
cwm

If you use the "Odin" version (One click Odin with the ICS leak) you will need to put cwm back on your phone via Odin. If you use cwm to install one of the custom ROMS you will retain cwm. Directions on how to put cwm back on your phone can be found in the "DEV" section. If you use the ODIN method you will need to re-root anyway, I prefer Copperhed's method...again, found in the "DEV" section. Good luck.
cwm
well i found a stock rom thats not a odin one click and not from a backup but it is stock. if i put the tar file on my sd can i flash it with cwm and if so will i lose it that way or do i need to find a rom already rooted injected with cwm? sorry for so many questions...

Do not try to flash TAR files through CWM. Only ZIP files (approved for flashing with cwm) can be flashed via CWM. TAR files are for ODIN. I suggest you learn more about the differences before trying anything. There are very direct and clear directions for all of this in the different XDA skyrocket sections (mostly in the "DEV" section). Do yourself a favor and take a week or two to do some reading and learning. Good luck.
reasearch
from all the reading i been doing all day from the everything ics forum its best to flash the odin one click first then flash cwm again and install your choice of custom roms [zip files] since im on gingerbread now. something with the modem and radio is giving alot of problems unless you flash the odin one click first. im gonna take your advice and do alot more reading before i decide. i had a captivate before i got the skyrocket and flashed many different versions thru odin on it but have never flashed a rom with cwm before. so odin or heimdall is not new too me just cwm. but now that i found out about cwm and the way it can backup roms ill never be without it again. its kinda like having life insurance it there if i screw up lol.. thanks for helping me and if i run across anything else im not sure about ill ask cause its better to ask than to mess it all up... ill let you know what i decide and how it turns out... thanks again
Well I made up my mind and flashed the odin one click leaked update of ics. Then used odin to flash clockwork mod and used cwm to then root and make a backup of ics just in case. I restored my apps and data using titanium backup and never lost any data not even on the games I play. Oh and if anyone is wondering this ics update flashing cwm and rooting did not trip the flash counter none of it did. From what I read the flash counter only moves when a custom rom is flashed and this was not a custom rom but a leaked version of stock rom to come. Also flashing cwm does not trip the counter cause you are only flashing a recovery image and not a custom rom and the root didn't cause you are not flashing anything using this method... thanks to all for the help I could not have done this without those who pointed me in the right direction..
