Ok, I have a rooted rogers captivate, running froyo, but now want to try a custom rom, but I'm having some issues.
I did install titanium backup, backup my entire system. I also downloaded the clockwork rom manager and did a flash ClockworkMod recovery.
I have gone thru the flashing directions as laid out by David Cogen here
theunlockr.com/2010/08/02/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-samsung-captivate-vibrant
but can't get past step 7, where you are in recovery mode and choose to select the package. I keep getting the error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I have followed the directions completely, downloaded the zip file, connected my phone to my pc with the samsung keis option that pops up as soon as I connect my usb, transferred the unzipped file from my downloads folder to the sd card on my phone, but not into any folder on the card. then I go and unplug my usb, power down the phone, reboot it into recovery mode, select to reinstall packages, and we're up to that error code.
I have downloaded 3 dif roms, tried it with each, cognition, serendipity, and continuum, each give me the same code.......so what am I doing wrong???? Driving my nuts, been screwing around with this for 2 days, got nothing to show for it.
I have also tried using the mass storage mode, and the debugging mode, to transfer the file, this has given me a different issue. When I attempt to do this, the window opens up, showing me the files on my system, but as soon as I try to drag and drop the rom onto the sd card I get this error code:
error 0x80070057
When i googled this code it keeps coming up with system registry errors, so I downloaded registry mechanic, ran my whole system, cleaned up all registry issues, and tried again, same problem.
Came to work, attempted it from my office pc, win xp, same issue. Also tried it from my chef's laptop, win 7. he also is an android user, and side loads apps to his liquid, we had the same error come up on his.
I'm stumped, I have watched about a dozen different videos showing how to load a custom rom, I can't see anything that I am doing differently than they are. I have read several posting on how to load a custom rom, they all agree with the videos I was watching, and again, nothing I haven't already done.
I have tried everything I can think of, been up half the night burning through google searches, trying to find someone with the same problem, to no avail....So here I am, hoping someone here will see (the probably stupidly obvious) problem, and help me to start enjoying my android to the fullest.....
Thank you
I'm using a rogers captivate. Are you getting the actual clockwork recovery or the stock one (cwm has a different menu with alot more options and is green I think - I'm not too good with colors). If your not getting clockwork, their website has zip files for every phone they support. Download the captivate one, rename it update (keep the zip extension), put it on the internal sd card and flash it and voila CWM recovery. You should be able to flash a rom after that. Or go get the one click odin for 2.1 and install recovery after flashing that (that's what I did)
Edit: if you flash with odin, you will need to root again. But that's pretty easy and custom ROMs for the captivate kick a**
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 running serendipity 5.7 on telus using XDA App
If he's even getting the "can't verify whole signature" error, he's definetly in CWM recovery. I am in the same boat, I have read countless forum threads, how-to's, etc. Always ends the same. The rom goes through, deletes my old ROM/files, starts to install the new one, and gets stuck in one of various errors. Error 78, error 94, etc. Flashed to stock, rooted, tried cleaning caches, bins, etc. Can't figure it out. I never a problem with custom ROM's on 2.1.
BTW, it sounds like you need to just toggle signatures in CWM. Just boot into recovery menu(green one) and find the toggle signatures line. press that line and your phone should say signatures disabled. Then try running that ROM install again. Eithre it'll work or you'll have a different error, but at least you'll be past thsi error. GL
So I rooted my phone for the first time via Odin. And it worked -- after that, I tried to install a custom ROM (slim bean) -- I ended up uploading the non zipped version on my SD card. And I went through all the steps to install up until "format/system" to realize that I didn't have the zipped files.
Now my phone is stuck on the Samsung Icon. I just tried to use Odin to flash the stock gingerbread again, but there it gets stuck on "Setup Connection".
Please help! Total newb at this, and clearly it failed.
---
My phone wouldn't turn off even with Odin closing, so I took out the battery -- so now my startup screen is
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
How do I fix this?
That is kind of a secondary download mode.. odin or heimdall should detect your phone.
Make sure you have a good usb cable and maybe try switching usb ports.

Right. To add to andros11's post, was the top left box yellow in Odin before you clicked start? Odin will acknowledge that your phone is connected immediately (the box should be yellow if you your phone is connected properly). Of course, make sure you have all of the appropriate drivers (i.e. download Kies for the Infuse).
Also, for future reference, I have a fix for situations like yours so you don't have to go back to stock. Basically, you can use adb to push the correct zip file to your sdcard. What you do is:
Download and install the Android SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Make sure to install platform tools (a separate download from within SDK)
In Mac and Linux, open up Terminal. I can't remember how Windows works, sorry! Navigate to wherever the platform tools folder is. You have to do this using command line, so, cd <the/path/to/your/folder> (the easiest way is to just type cd, hit the space bar and then drag the folder to the Terminal window).
Once there, connect your phone to your computer. It can be in CWM or Download mode
Type in Terminal: adb devices
The next line - the response - should tell you if your phone is recognized. If it's blank, try again. If it's still blank, you might try disconnecting usb phone cable and reconnecting again. You might also try going into download mode.
Okay. Next type: adb push <here, just drag the zip file to your terminal window> /sdcard/
Give it time to push the file to the sd card. Repeat if necessary (if you have more than one zip)
Exit terminal, disconnect phone from computer, go back into recovery, navigate to the sdcard to flash and lo and behold! The proper zip file is there for you!
This might sound long, but it's so easy. Getting SDK set up is probably the biggest pain and it's not really that much of a pain!
You may want to give Heimdall a try rather than Odin.
Put the phone into download mode and try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
Thanks so much everyone. Seriously.
So, Whizzpopper -- I *think* I installed SDK, but since my phone still says, "Firmware upgrade encountered issue. Please select Recovery mode in Kies and try again." I tried connecting it to Kies -- and it says "connecting" but never connects.
And even if I try the key combo to get to Download Mode or Recovery, it never gets away from that Firmware message.
How can I just get out of that mode?
how to keep fb sync on custom rom?
Hi I am a fairly new member, I have been following different threads for a long time but have recently signed up, so if i am posting in the wrong thread I sincerely apologize. moving on...
I have been using the Aeon 1.4 rom for awhile now and have been loving it. I first downloaded the rom without the stock libs and found that it is much faster than the stock libs rom, even after manually removing most of my stock apps via sd maid pro. But it has been the only way to keep the option to share with FaceBook. and being able to add facebook in my accounts and sync are in system settings. system settings>accounts and sync>add account.
You won't be able to get out of there until you are able to flash with either odin or heimdall.
You may also try a tool called one-click unbrick (google it)

ONE CLICK UNBRICK HAS GOTTEN ME OUT OF THAT GODFORSAKEN FIRMWARE MESSAGE.
Thank. You. So. Much.
... Now to follow the rest of the steps to try and get it back to some sort of operating phone!
and please note that it would be best to uninstall kies- it has been a source of problems for a countless number of users.
Thank you so much for your help!
So the terminal adb push worked -- and I installed my ROM (went through all the installation wizard parts, etc.) but now at reboot, I'm still stuck at the Samsung logo.
What happened?
@andros11 -- I saw your comment on how to best get from GB to JB
http://www.android.gs/install-unoff...pdate-to-ice-cream-sandwich-4-0-3-custom-rom/
I tried to follow those instructions to install ICS first, (I was previously too eager and went straight to JB!) and still I'm stuck at the Samsung screen.
Anybody have any threads, recos to get my phone to bootup to any system?
Sorry for the newbness!
Enter download mode to Go back to stock gb and then work your way up again up to jb.

Okay so I tried the Heimdall One Click Stock --
unfortunately, it stops working at the "clearing interface" stage -- says it failed. And I've changed the cables but still the same result.
You are on the right track... just that something is missing.
Be sure to get rid of kies.
Be sure you have the latest version of Java. http://www.java.com/en/
Use the link in post 13 that psal gave you - read at least posts 1 and 2 all the way through, then go through and perform each step.
The first time is a process, after that it is quick and easy. Thanks to qkster. :good:
Here is an award winning-less video of the process that you might want to watch as you may see a step in the video that you are missing. Hope this helps.

Solved: stuck at "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode
So you are stuck on the dreaded " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" screen and there is nothing you can do to get your phone to start normally or even get to the download screen?
Fret not lads & ladies, I've already gone thru the pain and suffering and have come out new man, and I'll tell you how I did it. Also im starting all the way at linux/mac so everyones included.
First things first, you are going to have to get your computer ready with the right software for it to work.
You will need to make sure you get an original stock rom, make sure your source forwhere you download it is credible, this was my first mistake and why evidently I got myself into this mess.
I'm sure other roms might work that are modified for your device, but I suggest stock, and starting fresh just to make sure everything is up and running.
I am not responsible for your device, it may get bricked if done wrong.
Linux & Mac users first.
1. You will need to downloadable a program called Hiemdall, its a program similar to Odin3 (windows program).
2. You will need to extract the stock rom you downloaded earlier, I suggest to a folder in your desktop, wd will call it "folder1".
3. Now open up Hiemdall in root, (sudo Hiemdall-frontend for terminal) and then make sure device is on and stuck on the " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" screen, plug it in, then press the utilities tab and detect. ($ Heimdall detect)(terminal users). Make sure you do all this fast because the tablets are kinda funny when they stay connected.
4. Now clickthe Utilities tab then the "save as..." button and save the destination for the .pit file in the same location as the extracted stock rom folder (folder1).
5. Next click the Flash tab, and click browse and locate your .pit file, the one you just downloaded. Next click add under Partition (files), and then change the partion name (On the left hand under patition details) to recovery and browse to the extracted folder (folder1) and click and add the recovery.img and press start.
Now if all went well your tablet will have restarted itself and you have seen the logo (Samsung). but the chances are it wont load past that screen, but thats ok because now you can get your device into download mode and re-flash the whole rom. Do this the same way you did the recovery.img, but make sure you add each new one to the correct name in the partitions details section.
Now if this didnt work, then dont worry you can still join the windows crew and do it hat way. Simple download a program called virtualbox and get a windows xp iso, thats up to you to figure out as I deal with open source only O.S
So aftr you do that just load up the virtualbox with windows xp and follow below. I found it a bit easier as well.
Windows users....
I found this way to be pretty simple and straight forward,
1. Download Odin 1.3 (1.85 wasn't working for me)
2. Download the clockworkrecoveryMod
3. Open up Odin and browse in the PDA section for the CWM you downloaded and add it, next plug in your device and the box should turn yellow on the top left.
4. Press start and let it finish and reboot your device and you should now be able to boot into CWM and re flash a rom, or if you were smart just restore from a previous backup and get all the apps and stuff back too.
I dont know why cwm worked but it did so no complaints, just make sure you go into cwm and backup your device and with titanium (google play app) before you start playing with the root.
I did this and it worked for me, so hopefully it did for you. Im sorry if it didnt but dont get down, j6st be patient and ask and someone will help.
The key is getting the recovery.img to flash on I believe and maybe the cwm has it built in the package, im sure someone can shed some light on it.

If you can reach to the CWM recovery mode: Download firmware in zip form, you can get it from the below link. if you have a zip file leave it.
After obtaining the firmware copy to your external sdcard using a card reader or any other method
In recovery mode select "Instal zip from sdcard" then select "choose zip from external sdcard" then select the copied firmware zip file from the list and wait for completion
After completion go back and select "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" reboot . it will take some time for reboot atleat 15min. it worked for me. hope it will work for you. good luck

Hi! Do you still having the CWM and Odin 1.3?
Hi.. I was experiencing this problem. Then without even thinking deeply, I try google any solution regarding this matter without referring to this thread first. I found this guys solution as he said it is for all samsung model.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfgq6bYfKLg
After done flashing, my tab giving a samsung logo and went off until now. I was unable to enter the recovery and download mode. I try to connect the tab with PC but it kept reconnecting repetitively although universal samsung usb driver has been installed. Any idea how to solve this?
Hi everyone I hope someone can help me resolving this problem I made myself...
I tried to install kitkat 4.4 on one old samsung S1 (the first galaxy model)
first I rooted the phone, and installed clockwork mod, and a *.zip that should contain kitkat 4.4 for the phone.
It all whent well in clockworkmod until I selected to install kitkat. It starts to install, but i get a droid with an red triangle and a exclimation mark, and then it reeboots
Is it somehow possible to reset the install and get it bak to normal? I have also the odin program. can I do something to get the phone working again?
sorry for no pics or video, but the forum didnt allow me before my 10th post..

okay, listen. the first step is download the stock rom. in the link at the bottom of this post is a list of firmwares for i9000. choose the one from your region, and download it, (or i can give you a link to my firmware, its international, so it will almost certasinly work. you might have to unzip the downloaded file, but only once. inside should be a folder withe the firmware name. go into the folder, you shouild see
a bunch of files.
then go to odin, connect you phone in download mode, navigate to the folder with the firmware folders, then:
Click on “PDA” and select file with “CODE” in its name.
Click on “Phone” and select file with “MODEM” in its name. (Note: Ignore this step if you don’t able to find such file)
Click on “CSC” and select file with “CSC” in its name. (Note: Ignore this step if you don’t able to find such file)
Click on “PIT” and select “.pit” file. (Note: Ignore this step if you don’t able to find such file)
press start, and hopefully your phone will be back working again.
Firmware download link:

press thanks if i helped!
Hi and thanks for your reply:good:
I was to download my stock file (region TEN), but i just came to something called rapid gator, and i entered wrong werificatin code, and was told that I have to wait one hour before trying again.. suppose thats a method for getting folks to pay for service. but why do samsung do such a thing?..
anyway, i would highly appreciate if you can send me the stock ROM
Now I was able to get the system up and runing again. I guess it has been changed since you been doing this.
I simply unzipped the package for my region and placed the zip file that was not going to unzip. When I placed this in Odin, at the pda button, it showed a *.md5 file. Set the phone in download mode, and it did the rest itself
But the reason I began doing this was that the phone dont read the sim card, and I was hoping for software malfunction, but I guess I wasnt that lucky.
Anyone who knows how I can get it to read the sim again?
so after looking for 3-4 hours i'm convinced that almost all the links for files related to the SK4G are expired/down/DL limit reached. i had to wipe my HDD and can't find my backup anywhere!?!? if anyone has the stock firmwares (any and all) could you pretty pretty please send them to me? i'm stuck in a buggy version of glorious overdose and just need my phone to work right again. respond for e-mail or just post ***NEW*** link in this thread.
P.S. so when the mods say "wrong thread" or "duplicate" i looked i searched and found nothing newer than 2013 so i started a fresh one......... that and i just signed up and it keep telling me "NO" in what seemed like the correct forum.
P.S.S i'm assuming there's legal reasons but whats up with a file repository on or at least paired with XDA to hold all the files posted here. shooting in the dark but maybe Kimdotcom will provide a mega account to serve as a repo?!?!?!?
I have the One-Click KG2 ODIN Java app that may be able to restore your SK to t839-Sidekick4G-UVKG2. Here's the README:
If you brick your phone, well you're lucky because it can't get any easier to fix. This is pretty much a one-click version of ODIN that is OPERABLE AND EXECUTABLE on ANY operating system that has Java installed. Self-explanatory, but if you don't have Java installed yet, you probably should go get it installed now.
(Credits go to Ayoteddy for the following post) :
To get into download mode (if you can't) pull the battery out of your phone, the USB cord (if connected), the SIM card, and the SDCard. Now...in a position where your one hand is able to access the Trackball and - volume key, hold them both at the same time and with your other free hand, insert the battery, after a second or two, you should see an Android on screen with a logo saying DOWNLOADING..you're ready to advance.
After you install Java, double-click the .jar file in this folder.
Hit "flash" and if all is well, it'll work without any hassles and you'll be back to the stock ROM like the day you got your Sidekick (factory reset).
If it says driver was not found, a window will popup with an administrative prompt if you are running Windows 7, allow it to run.
On the new Zadig window, go to Options>List all devices.
You should now see SAMSUNG COMPOSITE DRIVER, make sure the box to the immediate right says WinUSB and then hit the install button.
You should be on stock after performing these steps...if not and YOUR MODEM fails to upload, check "Flash Bootloaders" and the modem should flash just fine and you'll be back on stock ROM soon enough.
Thanks to AdamOutler for Heimdall!
His thread is here if you want to thank him properly!

Please re-upload these to sammobile.com, samsung-firmware.org, MEGA, Android File Host, or similar where the files can live on longer.
Sorry, I got rid of my SK a couple years ago and all the files that went with it.
