Some Questions About My Desire S - HTC Desire S

My Desire S' HBOOT version is 2.00.0002 and i want to root my phone. How can i do that ?
And another question; can i import a custom ROM without rooting my phone ? If i can do that, i expect anyone suggests me a stable and good custom ROM.
Thanks for your helps...

Depends, if you want permanent root you need s-off or htcdev unlock.
You can flash custom roms without root if you have s-off or htcdev unlock, look at the index in my signature, there are guides for rooting, s-off and unlock.

I looked there but can't understand so much. First thing, I don't want to change my HBOOT version, so what must I do to root my phone ? I think, for HBOOT version is bigger than 2.0, I must unlock my bootloader by HTCDev but my phone is still S-ON. Did I understand truly this part ?
For rooting, I want permanent root so I can't understand that how can I do this ?

I used the bootloader unlocker from htcdev.com, then downloaded SuperOneClick and rooted it that way.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
However, be aware that if you do use the htcdev bootloader unlocker, you have to flash the boot image yourself if you want to install a new ROM.
To do this, you will need to have fastboot from the Android SDK. I think it is included with the SuperOneClick, but I can't remember.
simply extract the boot.img from the ROM zip file and then in a command prompt, cd to the directory that you have extracted the boot.img into and type fastboot flash boot boot.img (as long as you have fastboot in your classpath). If you don't cd to your fastboot and type in fastboot flash boot /path/to/boot.img
Hope this helps!

I cannot install the Android SDK Tools. Installer says that "Failed to find Java version for 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\java.exe' " but Java is installed already. What must I do at this stage ?

The error is that you're computer thinks the JRE is in system32, which it isn't. You'll need to change it to point to program files\Java or wherever you've installed Java. Unfortunately I'm in Tesco and I cant remember how to do sort it out. Google Java classpath to find out how.

How can I change it ?

I'm going crazy with Java installation. I can't fix it. Someone must help me !

You don't need Java for adb/fastboot.
If you'd find a guide somewhere on the internet instead of asking this in the forum where it has been answered 10000 times already, you'd be done with it by now.
People don't want to help someone who isn't willing to help himself, but expects someone to do the work for him.

gingerbreak work but with hboot 0.98.0000
try to downgrade to 0000 then try gingerbreak again...must work
One question for you. Why didn't you install the recovery that comes with Revolutionary ?! It's also ClockworkMod and you could easily root your phone through a flash zip. Why make things complicated ?
L.E: If it S-OFFed your phone, it has gotten root permissions, so I can't see any problems on installing CWM.
Check this out.
I've not tried it yet, but it should be the solution to your problem.
thanks for the help i m sure downgrading will help but i have tried a few guides and none of them work... has anyone has another one up their sleeve?

Did you try also the guide I suggested? Just to know.
of course i did... but for me the revolutionary does not install cwm, gets stuck on downloading...
Mmh.. I understand.
There is an issue which is not so clear to me in that procedure. The guide says you get temporary root access, and in that very moment you should launch revolutionary, but the set of commands I can see in the "code section", don't convince me enough. Something tells me that performing all those commands, especially the latest ones, the temporary root access is going to be closed. Maybe the revolutionary software should be launched before issuing the latest two commands. Maybe this is the reason why you are not able to install CWM.
Of course, this is true if, and only if, I did understand the guide correctly.

I see what you're saying but it does work.
Basically running the fre3vo tool enables you to get TEMP root access on your device which you can then use when running the revolutionary tool.
Now that you're S-OFF you should be able to follow the instructions below in order to install RECOVERY, I'd recommend EXT4 (which is based on CWM)
install-instructions:
download zip package you want
put it on the root of your sdcard
rename it to PG88IMG.zip
reboot your phone in bootloader
go into hboot
hboot will check your sdcard for the PG88IMG.zip and ask if you want to flash update
confirm flahing
reboot your phone
rename the PG88IMG.zip back to something else cause if you are in bootloader, hboot will try to flash that file every time when it is named PG88IMG.zip
Let me know what happens....
cheers guzs thanks a lot for zour help! i ave run the fre3vo & revolutionary method a couple of more times and after 3 times it somehow worked! downloading mz first rom through rom manager now! cant wait to experience the real android world with out htc limitations!
ben_pyett: thank you for your explanation. I'm not so expert on Recovery programs; I'll follow your advice.
BTW: I see you have 0.98.2000 hboot. Since I've never seen that, I guess it is different from 0.98.0002 and it is not a typing error. Isn't it?

I am trying to launch revolutionary on my linux box, but every time I try to do it, it says:
Code:
bash: ./revolutionary: Permission denied
It has execution permission (777) and the phone is connected and has the TEMP root access. So, this "revolutionary" software doesn't work to me.

did you type "sudo ./revolutionary" ?
do you have the phone set with USB debugging on?
See HERE for further help from Revolutionary documentation
Thank you for replying.
Yes, I used sudo (I didn't doing with sudo before!), I have debugging mode ON and I've already checked the help documentation. The problem now is that the program suddenly quits and it is due to some missing dependency, actually, if I try to execute revolutionary on a Debian Linux 64bit (into a virtual machine), it runs properly.
As I've already written here, it would be useful to know what are the dependencies required by revolutionary so that I can install them on my Gentoo too.

Did you achieve S-OFF and manage to install CWM through the Debian VM method?
If you didn't why don't you try running it from a Bootable Ubuntu CD/DVD as described in the this thread Search for "How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool"
No I didn't S-OFFed my device yet. I want to do on my Gentoo Linux. I'm studying how to check what are the dependencies needed by revolutionary. I was trying ldd, but no lucky with that.
I only saw that on a Debian x86_64 virtual machine revolutionary works.

Thanks for that. I bought my Desire S a few days ago and it says in the bootloader that it is S-OFF already. So I didn't do any adjustments myself so far. I tried what you suggested but without success. When I go into hBoot it scans for the file, then briefly shows "parsing...[PG88MG.zip]" and that's pretty much it. Nothing else happens.

It's strange that it is already S-OFF.
Anyway, I have a doubt about the hboot version. I don't remember now the exact version number, but it's not 0.92.2000. My previous one was: 0.92.0002, when the device still was S-ON. What about it?

not much helpful, but on htc g2 in a similar situation, when root was done, next step was to push some changes to the partition where the Version number was stored. After that downgrading was possible the way you tried, and after that the S-Off tool worked. But as of now, i think there's no information how to cheat the version in the partition which it contains, or even which that partition is. Or maybe someone already knows this?
Then maybe we try a dd if= command on the right partition to overwrite it?
I'm not sure how you got this to work, because nobody else with the OTA has...
However, if you've gotten it to work, you can root just by flashing a superuser image from: http://androidsu.com/superuser/
You won't have S-Off, but I'm not sure of the appeal of S-Off, to be honest. The only thing you can't do with the HTC tool is flash radio files and the like.
I only tried by placing the pdsumthin.zip on SD card and it wouldn't allow it...
Theoretically an unlocked bootloader should allow that... Even if s-on

Your bootloader is still locked.
EDIT: in the unlikely event it is unlocked, you'll need to flash a custom recovery before flashing root. There's a guide somewhere on xda that explains all this.

You found nothing. We've known about this for a while now and is "officially" (HTC) sanctioned, hence it being THEIR WEBSITE AND INSTRUCTIONS.
Now find yourself a nice recovery image (CWM), boot phone into fastboot mode, "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img".
When this is done (don't ask how, the instructions on doing this are EVERYWHERE, including google's dev site -- you can figure it out yourself with google....), you will have a free and open recovery image, and can use that to write/install the su binary and apk (either with flashable zip or through adb shell, either will work).
There is NO NEED for any kind of downgrade.
Edit: And do change your avatar... this is a hacker site, not a sex dating site. Nobody here is interested in seeing that.
Well... No one has been able to unlock it as of when I posted... It was failing... I will try flashing with fastboot... As long as I can use titanium afterwards, s-off isn't that important
Why is the 4gs community so on edge? No one was ever this rude with 4G or any other HTC forum

I don't believe that's correct. I believe the issue is that the official HTC Bootloader Unlock process will not work -- and here's the key factor -- on devices that have already used the Revolution S-OFF procedure. I'm absolutely certain that people before you (who had not used Revolutionary) have successfully unlocked their bootloader via HTC's walkthrough.

Maybe it's because...
You created two threads that have nothing to do with doubleshot development
You didn't even check the General forum to see if there was an active thread about this (there is)
You can't even follow the rooting instructions posted in a thread on this very subject
As dhkr234 points out, all you need to do is flash the recovery zip and then flash the superuser zip. Just please try that. And then change your avatar.

I have been reading that it just kept hanging for everyone even with s-on... that is why I posted that I unlocked... I dont believe flashing recovery will work(yes i know how and tried zip method first).
What is the problem with my avatar? In the year that I have been on the MT4G thread no one has ever once complained about it... why you?
I'm not trying to be rude, I really just want to know why after all this time is it a problem?
ok, unlocked, SU and clockwork recovery all on board.. just stuck at S-on... directories are still read only, and I really would like to be able to use titanium!! but I am closer!!

Custom ROM Problems - Help Me (: Please

Hi there!!!! Here you are a few problems to deal it (it's 5 hours i'm working on it and didn't find a way out yet):
1. I've unlocked my ChaCha via HTCDev and everything works good.
*Restarting my device in bootloader and i can see the UNLOCKED txt over there.
2. Made a goldcard of my phone and everything worked out fine here too.
3. Trying to install the CWM but, obviouslly, it won't work.
*Is my device S-OFF? No, it's S-ON but i've unlocked the boatloader didn't I? Via HTCDev? It should work but it won't.
*When i try to flash it i got a version-related error so, i guess it is everything about the firmware version, isn't it? I have to downgrade because actually it's 1.10.
Yes, i do, but HOW?
I've tried THIS but:
a) Achieve temp adb shell root ?????? WHAT???? Not even in the other page they explain it how to do it, they just say DO IT.
b) "or simplest way is to use the batch file created by qzfive" oh, oky.. i will... BUT THE LINK IS OUT OF DATE!
Can anyone write WHAT AND HOW I HAVE TO DO THINGS TO GET THIS THING UNLOCKED?
i had a lot of android phones but no one was that hard to unlock... Not even the WP7 HTC Mozart was that hard.
I'll be glad to the one that will help me with this.
After you hav unlocked, its very easy to install CWM. Its ok if its S-ON. Extract the zip (you can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1164468) to get the recovery.img and put it to the folder where you have fastboot and use this command to flash CWM,
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now you will have your CWM on your device..
DUDE, you're just superawesome!

[Q] flashing boot.img

Hi,
I unlocked my desire with HTCDev so i have to flash the boot.img file every time i install a rom with a different kernel.
I was wondering if there another way, without connecting the phone to the pc, to flash this file.
I'm afraid not but i would like to be sure !
Nope, afaik not
There is a test feature on Sensation in 4EXT recovery, that allows doing it, activating bootloader upon reboot in some way.
I'm not sure if 4EXT recovery for Desire S has the same feature. Worth checking.
In any case, that's your only hope. The other way would be to relock, downgrade and S-OFF, to avoid all this unnecessary mess of flashing boot.img.
That feature doesn't work on desire s .
So the only way is via a pc using fastboot
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!
Hi, Noob here!!!
I've been trying to install a custom ROM onto my HTC desire s , 2.00.0002, 3 branded device for 2 days now.
Super one click sticks at stage 7, tried all the deselect and reselect debugging fixes.
Done the HTCdev unlock, thinking this would help.
Tried to downgrade to use revolution, done all the zergRush and misc_version commands but nothing happens when trying to change version, still had $ in command line instead of #
I've installed Clockworkmod and can boot into recovery, have backed up, deleted and formatted and recovered succesfully.
My main question is.....Can I flash CyanogenMod without rooting?
if so, what other roms can I flash via clockworkmod?
If I have to root...how do I manage it? because I've been right round 3 circles of the net and these pages trying to find an answer!!!
Hope someone can help.
The guides here are really detailed. If you can't follow them - I suggest you leave the phone as is until you can, since you're likely to cause way more damage going down the road. And in the meantime, read the guides until you figure out what things do.

Since you have already been able to install CWM recovery, means that your device is already rooted? Check whether you have SuperUser installed, download the free version of Titanium backup and run the app once, it will tell you whether or not you are rooted. If it is, then I suggest you to follow the link below to downgrade and S-OFF your device (since you already unlocked it using HTCDev anyway).. Or you can stay S-On but i'm afraid you need to use your PC to flash the boot.img everytime you flash a ROM..
If it's not rooted, then try to root it with the same link below.. HTCDev unlock is different with root..
But locked down to 3 network is another thing, I'm afraid you need to pay to get it carrier-unlocked..

no just flash zip file .
Nothing hard here. I've flashed 4-5 roms up to now. All running without a hiccup. Here's how you do-
Extract boot.img from the rom you are flashing
Put adb.exe, fastboot.exe, adb.dll and boot.img in a folder
Flash everything normally through recovery
And when it's done DON"T REBOOT just power off
Open up cmd, run as admin and go to your folder( cd c:\folder_name
type adb reboot bootloader
And finally fastboot flash boot boot.img
Everything should be okay.

[GUIDE] Root, SuperCID & S-Off for Evita Hboot 2.14 - Firmware 3.17 [Orange UK]

This is for International hTC One XL/Evita - Hboot 2.14 & firmware 3.17 (Orange UK)
If you own AT&T One X please look elsewhere, this guide is not for your phone
There is an abundance of information scattered in these forums and not all root methods/exploits work universally due to variation in firmware builds and Hboots.
I had to read a lot of threads to figure out how to S-off my Orange UK One XL with Hboot 2.14 and firmware build 3.17.
I was only interested in attaining S-off but had to start with HTCDev bootloader unlocking which I didn't really want to do but none of the known root exploits worked on my firmware.
I am sharing this hoping it would help others avoid taking pills for headaches when pursuing this noble quest
AIM:
Provide a short guide to others with similar device and configuration on where to start and simple clear steps to follow with needed links.
PREREQUISITES:
1. latest htc drivers for your Windows PC/laptop if you have one of those. Check here.
2. a working adb environment preferably from latest Android SDK, if you don't have this already set up please check here.
3. "USB debugging" must be checked under Phone settings>Developer options
4. an original htc USB cable is strongly recommended.
5. phone charged at above 50%
6. basic knowledge of using command prompt (cmd) in Windows and adb commands.
STEPS:
So in my case the steps were:
[1] Unlock bootloader through htcdev.com
[2] Flash/install TWRP recovery
This is done manually. All-In-One Toolkit didn't work for me BTW.
1. download latest TWRP recovery for One XL/Evita from here
2. you can rename file for easier command prompt typing later, like TWRP5.img
3. place file recovery file in your adb/fastboot folder
4. connect phone in fastboot mode to PC, make sure it displays fastboot USB on phone before you proceed.
5. start command prompt from within fastboot folder by right clicking inside folder and choosing "open prompt here", type following command:
Code:
C:\yourFastbootFolder> fastboot flash recovery TWRP5.img
Not a bad idea to test your recovery by making a nandroid backup before proceeding to next step.
[3] Flash a custom rom (root)
All custom roms are rooted by definition. If you chose e.g. ViperXL like I did remember to flash boot.img extracted form same rom zip afterwards, otherwise bootloop!
You can of course flash a SuperSU zip instead to gain root but I don't see the point.
[4] SuperCID
This is the simplest way that I found accidentally during my endless searches, all credit goes to @beaups for this one and @Austempest for sharing :good:
1. connect phone to PC in Android mode (mode where you can use phone)
2. Run the following command from command prompt (CMD):
Code:
C:\>adb shell
To enter adb shell, then enter following commands after each other:
Code:
# su
# echo -ne "11111111" | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 bs=1 seek=20
3. Reboot to bootloader and hopefully you'll see 11111111 as your CID ...... yes
[5] S-Off
Now that your are rooted with SuperCID you can just follow @beaups simple steps for S-Off found here Facepalm S-Off
That is it.... you broke your shackles
I am not a dev and for sure not taking credit for other people's work, merely giving back and hoping this assists clarify stuff and save some time.
Cheers!
the one clicks would not work for you because you dont have an att one x so the supercid exploit doesnt work on our phones
all phones go through htcdev.com to unlock, att phones just need supercid first.
you should make a not in your guide that this guide wont work for at&t phones.

Thanks for this important reminder, note added in red on top!
You mentioned one click is only for AT&T phones, I guess you mean All-In-One Toolkit by hason2000, you see even in the tool's thread it's not stated explicitly that tool works only for AT&T, while the respective threads for these exploit state that it's for AT&T One X not negating other international versions!
Most guides/tools are for North America and some Australia but very few for Europe which BTW only recently came on board with 4G/LTE.
So figuring out, especially for noobs, what is what with all these international variations for one device and huge amount of information, while searching doesn't always provide an answer is a tedious task and can end up miserably :crying:
I hope it's in order to add some info for European Evitas
guys kindly don't quote whole post(s), thanks
Only AT&T Phones are different in the case of unlocking/rooting because they can't use HTCDEV. Every other onexl is the same for unlocking/rooting.
Great guide, thanks you! it worked !
Now i'm stuck at the next step. ha :crying:
i cant get root, because my touchscreen not functional after flashed a custom rom. i had success until step 3, i cant proceed to step 4 as i cant use my touches when the rom loaded. i didnt have any back up. i already searched around to dgrade my touchscreen firmware, but it needs root. im stuck here, i can flash custom cwm recovery, install custom rom but cant touch screen. the default cm10.1 dont have android debugging enabled by default, i cant enable it cos i cant touch the screen. if i restore to stock ruu, i can touch screen n all works, but i had a problem sync google contacts.
The reason im getting my hands on custom rom is bcos my stock XL(Asian version) will neve sync google contacts properly, i tried to flash JB stock RUU, but its same. then, i started to tamper my fon with unlocking bootloader via htcdev, flash cwm(twrp mess on my sdcard storage). i had experience on older htc devices but its my 1st time on the htc one series. right now, im on evita s-on, unlocked bootloader, hboot 2.14, cwm recovery(twrp mess on my sdcard storage), not-super CID. I 'm left with a non-touchable cm10.1, i can flash any rom that supports s-on. tried to relock bootloader but i cant flash stock ICS ruu.flashing stock JB RUU is ok. my target now is to s-off n superCID.
i can :
flash RUU 3.17, running a stock RUU 3.17.
unlock bootloader
flash custom recovery(twrp mess with my internal storage)
i cant :
root my device on stock rom
touchscreen wont work on custom rom
any help will b greatly appreciated.

How to upgrade bootloader to 2.14
So what if you are not on HBoot 2.14?
EDIT:
Warning: It is not a good idea to upgrade only the bootloader if you intend to flash the latest CM10 builds! Avoiding RUU and unlocking again out of laziness will probably get you in trouble afterwards. RUU is definitely the safer way. You'll find a good collection of ROMs here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119610
and the tutorial for upgrading RUU on a previously modded phone here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26260005
I found these threads which helped me SuperCID, S-Off and finally upgrade the HBoot of my already rooted evita.
First you need the superCID from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42351491
Next Step S-Off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155069
Then RegawMOD the appropriate bootloader from this thread and flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786498
The procedure was easy once I had found the appropriate threads on XDA
You should not update hboot that way. It only updates one file and not all the firmware files. Ruu or flashing firmware.zip are the best ways.

I simply needed an updated bootloader in order to enable flashing the latest CM10 nightlies. This did the job.

That's exactly why you should not do it that way. You may get issues along the way as a result of the software not properly utilizing your hardware. This is why you're supposed to update hboot. What you did is more like tricking it into thinking you updated the firmware.

As exad said, CM 10 didnt want you to update just the hboot it wanted you to flash 3.18 RUU or equal to get updated firmware.
The requirement to install 3.18 RUU is listed as a requirement for CM. The hboot is what is checked but things like radio, adsp and wcnss are what actually needed to be updated, which you have not updated.
All you have successfully done is beaten the basic check for if you flashed the 3.18 RUU without actually doing what you were told to do.

Has anyone tried successfully to write SuperCID into hboot 2.15 S-On devices?
as the instructions is for hboot 2.14, and I would like to S-Off the device with hboot 2.15 and it is S-On.
I have tried the hex with adb method, but it doesn't work.
