nandroid limits? Also ICS vs GB? silver... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I came from quick qiz gb rom. I loved it. Fast quick great bat life everything want. No CIQ...
however... I saw great stuff about silver rom GB... ics themed so I grabed it and I gotta say its slick. Im confused about what it comes with but its fun.. IM getting addicted to flashing its so much fun.
However. I keep making nandroids of my roms... is there any bad side to flashing from nandroid to nandroid? Is there anything I should watch for? I ask because I like idea of going from ICS to GB ... I have get to install a ICS rom I just wonder should I watch for anything is there some info I need?
Anthing im missing...
Also whats the reason for ICS I know why you would want it but what advantages does it have over GB if any at this point of time? I have read of issues but no ICS bonus's
side note can you uninstall TouchWiz launcher

flash darkside in between and you'll be fine. Alot of people wanted ics for the gui, i wanted it for the new kernel with better features, including rendering gui with gpu, which isbwhat makes it so smooth. A first step towards smothness of ios, which was gpu rendered from the beginning.
I've installed golauncher and removed touchwiz on every rom i ever flashed, including all the ics ones, so yes.

alright I also need to flash the modem when going when GB to ICS right? just double checking... im not quite ready to flash ICS but I want get a nandroid of it just in case want to use it later. Dang android needs push that out! sounds super cool

Which custom (sense) ROM will you prefer for sensation 4g?

There are several major custom ROM out there for the sensation 4g, which one would you prefer?
Android Revolution HD, Virtuous and Leedroid seem to be the leading group out there, I was an CM loyal with my old G2 so need some advice here.
For now their difference seems to be quite little, but i am not familiar with custom Sense ROM, which team has the biggest upside? Thx.
Sense ROM only folks! I know there are a lot of love for CM, I am a big fan too, but i think sense has done some great job.
I just hope someone will allow sense launcher to resize widget, which will Sense the perfect choice.
None..
Until there is a TMOUS based one released I won't be flashing these WWE roms. T-Mobile Visual Voicemail doesn't work, along with MyAcccount which is good for checking on my minutes and notifying me when I am low. From what I read, the OTA for Sensation 4G is to be released within a week or two and from there hopefully we will get a rom like CMYLXGO's HD2 Desire.
The My Account app works fine of Crystal Pyramid rom
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I tried all three of them. Leedroid seems to be laggy. Android Revolution HD feels a little faster than the stock ROM and that's about it. Virtuous seems to be faster than the stock ROM too, and I like how they added more options to the quick settings. Like volume control, brightness control, etc... But camera flash doesnt work on Virtuous. Sorry for the negative comments. I'm just not a fan of sense. It feels bloated to me.
Whats with all the ROMs anyways? Why not use something like ADW EX, freeze Sense, and then get setCPU working instead?
I wish someone would have a simple method to perm. root the S-OFF devices and then let us do what we want. Why do we have to flash a ROM just to have perm root AND a glitch free phone?
I perm rooted via the methods in the new guide, but wound up being one of the losers that lost WIFI and had to flash back to my stock ROM.
Now I am back with temp root, ADW EX, and titanium backup. My phone is faster than I care for it to be. (I wouldnt notice any more speed). Id love to be able to turn off my phone and not have to go re-root and redo setcpu each time. Also, Id love to see Adfree work for a change.

Missing camera flash depends on new OC-kernel and is in all OC-roms

I feel sorry about your case, but your point is totally unrelated to this discussion. I like ADW and other vanilla launcher, but Sense has done a really good job on many different things (well, at the very least if someone could come up with the same flip clock, I will probably be moving back to non-Sense).
I've tried them all. The one by Sergio is the best.
Hey,
I’m currently flashed too Android Revolution HD 1.1.3, but I’m not sure wether to swap to LeeDroiD. Revolution HD is nice, but the built in SOC over clocker really don’t work well, the UI is as smooth as anything but in games and benchmarks the FPS and scores are so much lower in this revision!

Thanks for pointing this out. Restoring to official (nandroid backup). I'm gonna need flash soon.
I tried CoreDroid already. It's the most atractive, realy beautiful, but feels slower than official.
Lee's new update seems to have fixed most of the Lag on mine. Then again, I haven't tried the others...yet.
But the camera flash doesn't seem to be working yet, even on the new updated ROM.

I think you could fix that by flashing a stock Kernel.
I've tested Android HD and Virtuous, seems like Virtuous is a bit smoother and includes many nice tweaks.
I wish any of these sense rom will have the flexiblity like CM
insertCoin
I'm using insert coin at the moment and it seems really smooth and fast. I was looking around to see if there were any EVEN better. This ROM has the same issue with the camera flash which as someone said, is cause by the processor overclocking and is common to all OC kernels atm. Perhaps some of these custom ROMs may have correctly functioning flash with the Stock kernel?
I have tried all the ROMs on the development page and wasn't thrilled with any of them. I ended up going back to Tmos. The reason is that My Acct won't run if you are on Wifi but it can do that on the stock. As one of the previous posters pointed out, visual voicemail doesn't work. I also ran the Quadrant Standard and the performance was sub par. On the stock ROM, I get scores into the 2300s. With the others, I was getting scores between 1400 and 1900. Very pitiful for all the performance promises.
Hopefully within the next couple of weeks the ROMs should improve significantly, unto that point I’m going to switch from Revolution HD to LeeDroid.
Android Revolution HD at the moment. Single core over clock @1.8ghz smooth and fast. Here's my quadrant.
The Revolution HD 1.1.3 works well for now...until my next flash
I've only flash Revolution HD and the latest 1.1.3 update is even better. I won't bother flashing other ROMs until an AOSP one comes out, but this one is plenty fast at the moment. Quadrant scores don't mean anything to me.
is it possibile to just de-odex the stock tmobile us rom and theme a little, also tweak a little. i love the stock rom because everything is working every time i try a custom rom theres always a give or take like the camera flash not working and so on

[Q] Drop-down menu widgets?

Hey guys. I switched from my slow, glitchy, and just aging captivate to the nexus S a few days ago, and I love it.
There are a couple things I miss though - the big one being the quick setting widgets in the drop down menu. I don't care if it's an app/widget from the market, or something I have to flash in to the rom. I just want those settings up there.
Is there a way to add those without flashing another rom? I like stock gingerbread (and I'll be switching to ICS when it comes out OTA for 9020A) and I don't want to flash a custom rom like CM or something. I'm rooted, but other than that I'm stock 2.3.6.
Other things I miss are a predictive dialer, and swype. If you can help me out there too I'd be greatly appreciative!
Edit: Oh, and the music controls shown in the menu would be nice too! (but only if it will work for google music)
When I moved to the NS from a Vibrant I felt the same way. There is no way to do it without some modding and I don't remember ever seeing a simple flashable zip to add it to GB. I ended up having a love hate relationship with CM7 but have moved to ICS and there is a mod to add it to some ICS roms in the dev section. I have yet to bother adding it.
Anyway, yes it can be done but not without some flashing or modding but if you aren't wanting to do that you are out of luck.
You can get similar functionality to pics with widget locker or extended controls, you get an icon or space in the status bar though. GB doesn't support it.
Music widget as above is available in stock ics too.

I really like stock, but I can flash if I *have* to... I've had a love hate relationship with CM myself, I felt like it took a little too much effort to keep up and running.. With the Google apps packs, and the nighties and constant backing up and flashing, you know. Is CM up to ICS for the Nexus S 9020a yet?
I also recently came from the captivate. I was also determined to stay stock and wait for the ics ota but....
The development for the ns is light years ahead of what you and I were used to and i am impressed after flashing a pretty much stock ics rom with a custom kernel. No toggles in the drop down but it sure is nice having everything working like it should. Fast and smooth! Peter Alphonso's ics

A grateful NOOB says hello - and I could care less about an official ICS update

I rooted my phone last night and now I'm seeing just how amazing the ROMs are. My wife looks at me like I'm nuts when I tell her about it so I needed this place to share my excitement.
I'm using the overclocked ICS Multiple Flavors right now and I never want to go back! (To be on the safe side I stashed aside a factory backup and a backup of how I had the phone prior to installing the ROM.)
Now I really don't care if I get the official ICS update. Not after seeing what the developers can cook up.
Cheers!
While your enthusiasm for the dev of our phone is just, and we do have some great roms, I would hardly go as far as saying not to care for official ICS. Mostly because without Official ICS it is unlikely we will ever see 100% stable/functional ICS Roms
SkyICS is nice, but its NOT ICS, it's themed to look like ICS. BIIIIIG Difference.
Note: It's what I'm running and I love it, its great, but I still want ICS .

Whats worth it in ICS over GB MHX!! superlight

I use mhx super lite GB AND LOVE IT... however I wonder I read up on ICS it seems very cool... is it worth it at this point? I mean I depend on my phone to work wouldn't want issues read about any info be great..

All the ICS roms are based on a leaked rom. Any custom rom is not without issues. If you value stability, over being bleeding edge, stay with a GB based rom. If you want to try an ICS based rom, do research first, have a nandroid back up, and follow the dev's instructions to the letter. This is true for any rom, though.
With any ROM, custom or stock, they all have problems. Even stock GB has problems. For me, and the features I use, it was worth it to go to ICS. I just find the usability of ICS so much better than GB. Everyday I find little things that used to annoy me in GB have been updated and is now more usable in ICS.
Just to give you one little example; I get a lot of notifications and I found it on many occasions a bit annoying to only have the option to clear all. I don't want to open the app, just get rid of that one (or two) notifications, I just want to get rid of it. I can do that now with ICS.
if you have instagram back on GB and uses it, and wants to keep using it, hold on for a while, but if no, go for it. ICS is so worth it. it's really nice, and MHX's 5.1 is very smooth!

[Q] Whats so great about ICS?

So I'm currently running 2.3.6 as is out of the box, rooted, on my Skyrocket from ATT. If I switch to an ICS build of any kind, what am I gaining?
Can anyone convince me of why ICS is awesome and worth upgrading to?
Lol gingerbread sucks.. Sorry enough said
Edit... And stock gb too ouch
Too many things to name
Face unlock
Recent apps
Swipe to clear
Better cpu and gpu mgmt
Battery life etc...

Not much. It looks MUCH much nicer. We're talking 'beautiful' levels of UI changes. But other then that, not so much.
If you care how your phone looks (I do, I feel much more productive and use it better if I feel like it's a flashy looking device) then get ICS. If you don't, just wait.
Edit: Battery life is a bit better supposedly, but beyond that not too much
hm ok, i am a sucker for visuals. so if i decide to go with ICS can i run titanium backup pro and backup just my apps, then reinstall it after ICS and restore them?
also, what are some recommendations for ICS roms, im looking for stability and i dont want to lose any functionality

Yes you can run TiBu, backup your apps and reinstall after you update the rom and restore from TiBu. Make sure you restore apps & data only, do not restore any system settings.
I'm running AOKP with Apex Launcher and love the clean base look and feel. http://aokp.co/index.php/news

ICS is a very huge update, and a lot of it goes beyond just bullet point features (for which the list is a mile long)
Basically, ICS represents a near ground-up overhaul of the entire operating system, to make something smoother, faster, and more attractive, while adding a ton of small usability features that individually might not be much but add up to a big difference.
It's the biggest update in the history of the OS, plain and simple, and I've been through all of them since Cupcake (ok, I might have skipped Donut).

I've tried both Cyanogenmod9 nightly, and embryo 3.2.
Without a doubt, embryo 3.2 is probably the coolest, most stable, and light-weight mod I've used. It's carefully tested and very stable. It retains touchwiz, has s-voice which works incredibly well, comes pre-installed with Titanium and superSU etc..
I liked cyanogenmod too, but it's still pretty buggy in its early stages.
Since I installed embryo 3.2, I haven't even bothered to look around at anything else.
Switched to seanzscreams skyics rom from gingerbread stock and I have not looked back. I had exceptional battery life in gb with the use of juice defender but in ics using jd only made it worse. So that convinced me right there. The way I look at it is why would you not want to upgrade to the newest release of android? Or at least just try it out. Use rom manager (assuming you're rooted or willing to root) to make a system image backup. It will literally back up everything that your phone is running. If you're dissatisfied with ics just revert back with rom manager.

Speaking of juice defender.
I'm having a terrible issue with "cell standby" eating through my battery. Today, I stuck juice defender on to see if i could curb the radio battery abuse.
I *do not* want to have to rely on something like juice defender to protect my battery from the cell standby issue. I'm just at a loss of what to do otherwise.
I'm all for trying seanzs sky ics, but i'm afraid that i'll just continue to have the same problem. after researching the issue, it appears that a lot of people who try roms of all types across various phones have the cell standby issue eating up juice.
ics 4.0.4 is very nice to the eyes if you had two phones one on gb and one on ics then you would tell there's just no comparison.
if you go with ics then look at aokp its very nice and about the closest your going to get to official google ics 4.0.4 .
Seriously just install the latest cm9 with ucle2 radio and instigators kernel try it and fall in love... Gb had its place but i very much doubt i could ever go back
CM9 Skyrocket
Its like going from Windows XP to Windows 7 :good: :silly:
I used AOKP on my Vibrant for like 5 months before getting my Skyrocket. Going from AOKP back to GB after so many months was brutal. Thankfully the ICS leak came out a week after I got my skyrocket

One thing to point out on ICS is that the Skyrocket's processor APQ8060 was never fined tuned for Gingerbread 2.3.5 or 2.3.6. So the UI was choppy, and so was the video (when playing XviD encoded video).
I can wholeheartedly say ICS UI is much smoother, and the video playback is as smooth as it can be. The battery life on UCLF5 in my opinion is a big improvement over any ROM to date. It offers some small UI improvements in the taskbar, but a lot more under the hood.
With that said, Touchwiz kinda make it look all the same, which is a big downer. I use Apex Launcher to bring back the native ICS feel.
Everything is better. 2. Whatever version is like windows mobile, its dead. Really
Chimaira Android 4.0.4 (Beta2)
uh oh, major problem now. so i installed the paid premium rom manager, installed clockworkmod recovery, clockworkmod touch, and then used the download ROM, chose Cyanogenmod nightly, chose a distro from 7/2/12, phone rebooted, installed, rebooted, stuck in boot loop. when i go to recovery using the volume and power buttons i get the clockwork mod recovery 5.8.1.3 screen, but when i hit down volume to choose anything it freezes, goes, black, and refreshes with "reboot system now" selected.
now "reboot system now" is my only option, if i hit up or down, it will move to that choice, go black, and refresh and show "reboot system now" selected instead. ahhhh what do i do??
** escaped soft brick** phew
You do realize 5.8.1.3 is a "TOUCH" recovery. You dont use the volume rockers. When you try....recovery resets. You see it as freezing. And when you install the rom you need to wipe cache, dalvik, format data, format system. Then install rom. Hope things make sense now.
You ask what's so great about ICS. Well what's so great about apple pie? What's so great about American? What's so great about freedom? Explosions? Awesome movies? Oh yeah. EVERYTHING.
If you flash a ics rom, you should try aokp or chimera. Both awesome roms.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using XDA
You should never use rom manager to do all of that. You should have done it step by step using a guide made for you, the noob.
