[Q] Does Skyrocket have OpenGL ES 2.0 support? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Downloaded Instagram today like I'm sure thousands of other Android users have in the past hour, and my Skyrocket seems to have problems rendering the image after its taken with the camera in Instagram. I did some quick research and Instagram needs OpenGL ES 2.0 support to work. I found one page that says various Samsung phones have that support, but only one source I could find says the Google Nexus One is the only Samsung-made phone with OpenGL ES 2.0 support.
So I guess this is more of a double question.
Does the skyrocket have this support?
And if it does, could ICS be causing the problems with Instagram?

I can't speak about the OpenGL support. Although I can say that instagram is working fine so far on my stock Skyrocket.

Ummm... bull****?

[Q] List of things Nexus S doesnt have that the Galaxy S does have?

Galaxy S has:
Removeable SD Card
Ability to watch movies without converting etc
Can use 3.5 jack to see movies etc on TV - not sure if the nexus s can do this or not
Bluetooth 3.0 - But its better that it has 2.1 so you can use wiimote
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head if anyone has any other things id like to know.

13GB SD card internal is more than enough for most people.
between all the streaming apps coming, and the apps on the market for playing divx, it shouldn't be an issue.
3.5 tv out should work, if not then most likely someone will write an app, or code a stock rom that includes the function.
meh. 3.0 is alright, but as you said, no wiimote and it has other issues as well.

SIM-lock and crapware?
much better video camera, 720p and suport for various codecs
I'm willing to bet the actual camera sensor in the Nexus S is identical to the Galaxy's. From pictures, the aperture looks the same, and also reviews of the Nexus S have noted how well the low light performance is, which is similar on the Galaxy S. I'm quite certain the lack of 720p is merely a software limitation rather than hardware being different... but of course this is all speculation.

it seems that still pictures are decent enough but video samples are terrible, for example this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDDn-MXzd3U in the background i truly cant tell whats on the video. There are many more examples on you tube, I hope they can fix it.
All "HD" video shot with cameraphones is terrible anyway. You're better off shooting in 480p.

Have you seen the Vibrant's video capabilities? I highly doubt it based on your comment. While the pics on it are average, the video it takes is EXTREMELY good.
I bet the lower capability video camera on the S is due to the lack of a SD slot.

yeah, i forgot to ask. I didnt see swype in any of the review. Is it possible that they even took that out?
What do you mean "took it out"? Swype has never been a part of Android, it is a carrier/manufacturer add-on.
There was a video review that showed what writing options the Ns came with, and Swype was not one of them - in fact, it only had Android Keyboard. Forgot which video.
BTW, what's the deal with Bluetooth 3.0 and the Wiimote? What happens, it prevents the Wiimote from working? I've never heard of this.
Third-party apps for WiiMote pairing do not work with Bluetooth 3.0 (or some skins, such as HTC Sense)

yeah, but somehow i hoped that when they team up with samsung they would bring over all the goods samsung (galaxy s) has to ofer (excelent camera, swype, codec support etc.). But they brought nothing except super amoled and plastic design.
Who knew that removing features would make the device better? =)

Well, If Swype wants to open source it's keyboard, I'm certainly interested.

[Q] browser.apk

First of all, sorry if this isn't the right section.
I couldn't find anything relevant, so i ask here: has anybody a standard FroYo browser.apk to use on the tab? Will it work?
Or really, any other browser....
For what it's worth, i'm on a Samsung JK5 rom (euro tab), i have root and number22's gallery3d.apk
Thanks in advance for any help
U should try dolphin mini browser available from the market

What do you miss about the standard browser? I don't care for the samsung browser much myself. I found that miren browser is a great replacement.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the help. However i didn't mean an extra browser like the mentioned Miren or Dolphin (nor Opera or Firefox or SkyFire)... I meant literally a replacement for the stock browser
What i don't like in the stock one is that it force closes pretty much while doing anything!
Now, i don't know if replacing browser.apk will also fix globally the issue, but i sure hope so considering that any WebKit browser i used still shows signs of unstability, as opposed to the same browsers on an Xperia X10 mini pro... That runs a normal Android browser. At the moment i'm using Opera mobile because it's the best one that dosen't run on WebKit, and as such it gains plenty of reliability. I also get all my bookmarks (epic, i tell you) since i've been a desktop Opera user for 10 or something years, but that dosen't fix the built in one, that... Well, let's just say that Apple made a damn fine rendering engine.
So, any more help? If what i think is right, after replacing the "Samsung" one with the standard "Google" one it will make every other browser work properly!

Yup stock browser sucks,I don't think that it will get much better until honeycomb gets ported to the tab. I would also advise you to try dolphin mini in the meantime.

Thanks, i gave a try to Dolphin Mini and while it looks better than the hd one, it still crashes too easily. I do have half an idea to make a test...

You say you're using Opera mobile, so whats the problem? just don't use the stock browser then.
The only problem I have with Opera Mobile, is that is has no flash support. For the rest it's perfect(and really fast).

Sure, i'm using Opera and i get even more features than any other mobile browser, not to mention that i'm with Apple on the Flash subject, but... Put things in perspective: why my Xperia X10 mini has to be the best choice all around for web surfing with a smaller screen, slower cpu, one fourth of the ram and an older WebKit build? On the tab the only sensible choices are Opera, Firefox and Skyfire, as all the others are tainted by the (as usual) horrible coding that Samsung is famous for. And for what? They added support for animated gifs, almost as useless as Flash. I would've used the Xperia browser, but Sony customized it to look blue-ish like the rest of their interface, so i'm sure it will require that whole interface to run! Also, i changed the Samsung ruined gallery app with custom gallery 3d, and now it's a lot faster and it handles properly images.
I could use a custom rom(one built without the Samsung-iness and stable). I could. Thing is, i like the interface Samsung cooked up, it's this close to my idea of perfection, and no home replacement gets even close to this, not even ADW ex.

Wait, i'm not sure i get it. So the gallery became a lot worse in Froyo compared to the one in Donut but it gained animated gifs? Or it got more organized and Samsung broke something after adding the whole gif thing?
Custom one works perfectly and has no gifs... As far as i know gifs are an exclusive to Sense and TouchWiz.

[Q] Hack Skype 2.0 To Allow Video Calling?!?!

Now that Skype (2.0) supports video calling, but is only limited to a handful of models, can someone hack it so that video can be used on other models, not only those with front-facing cameras, but also with only back-facing ones...?

p.s. and even back-facing camera can make use of... uh... a mirror...

It seems to be signed with different key, so you must uninstall your Skype first.
If you try it, post results with your device model.
Won't sign in, HTC Legend, MDPI, no front camera. Oh well, was worth a try, considering MY specs.

Is the Archos 35 Home Connect rootable?

http://www.archos.com/products/ah/archos_35_hc/index.html?country=us&lang=en
So, i cam across this on a tech for old people article of cnet, of all places. but i was looking at it, and i'm curious about it. it looks like it could be a fun thing to tinker with, but is that even possible? It says it runs froyo, can't be too crippled because it has a web browser. Only has "AppsLib" tho, not the market.
Also i can't seem to find it anywhere online >_<
EDIT: wait a sec, has this thing even been released yet?
be honest I was looking at picking one of these up myself. The prospect of running Google music (I did get into that beta) and having access to all my music seems good. Alarm clock functions are also a plus. I imagine it will be root-able and someone will make a g-apps package for it. It has a front facing cam as well so it could possibly run skype, qik, etc. or if 2.3.4+ was installed, Google talk. The Chumby folks also released an android app that emulates a chumby device fully and connects to their services so you could use this as a chumby / Sony dash.
Once you have appslib, just download arctools and ta-dah! Instant LATEST market. As for being rootable, I think any Archos is. The only problem the 35 HC may have is lack of RAM/a slow processor...

[APP] XBMC for Android -=Bug List and Dev=-

There are several similar threads in other device forums so I thought why not start one here. If the mods think this is in the wrong section or a bad idea please delete.
We can also use this thread for the development of XBMC for Transformer if anyone is up to making a Transformer specific build.
Okay so as of the time of this posting there is no "Transformer XBMC" specific version so I'm using one of the generic builds. "xbmcapp-armeabi-v7a-debug-20120714.apk" is the name of the one I found. Link
Works:
Nothing - It crashes back to home screen after launching.
Bugs:
That's it for now. I'll keep monitoring this thread and post updates to the OP if possible.
I should note that this same apk works for my Galaxy S3 and my wifes EVO 4g with little to NO problems.
Same problem here, works on galaxy note and tab 10.1, transformer simply dies on launch...

@bkmo - Good point. Can a mod please move this to the correct section? Thanks.
As far as development goes I was hoping that maybe we could use this thread to attempt to compile xbmc from source for Transformer. I've compiled on other platforms before but I have no experience with Android.
Anyway maybe an actual developer would be better suited to post a thread on xbmc development.
Check General section i had already started a thread for XBMC on TF101 maybe we can continue there

NOOOOOOO!
It works perfectly on my Rezound and my friend said it works on his TF201 but looks horrible.
It doesn't work because the Tegra 2 doesn't support Neon instruction set. The chances of it ever working on a Tegra 2 are slim to none.
That news is a bummer...

Its quite sad but I personally i dont think id have much use for it on my tf. Im running XBMC on my original xbox and I dont think you could get a better inexpensive media centre
You definitely can and it's a Raspberry Pi with Android or Linux The original Xbox doesn't seem to support anything higher than 480 because the processor can't handle the load, I've tried.

Yeah and you can't even find them anywhere. I've been on the official list for months. I have 3 original xbox's at home running XBMC but for all my HD media I have several apple TV 2's running XBMC. It rocks!
I can think of several applications for running XBMC on my transformer. For one, my kids can watch all my HD media from my local server rather than deal with Netflix's crappy lack of selection.
Check out this kickstarter project: Equiso smart TV. I'm thinking of pledging for one and hopefully XMBC will run on it.
Works great on HTC one X. I was able to download video add-ons, get weather etc. Only issue I had was tiny keyboard, had to use a touch pen. I have big hands lol.
