[Q] Hack Skype 2.0 To Allow Video Calling?!?! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skype.raider
Now that Skype (2.0) supports video calling, but is only limited to a handful of models, can someone hack it so that video can be used on other models, not only those with front-facing cameras, but also with only back-facing ones...?

+1 i was thinking at the same things!

yeah, i know us operators, and worldwide operators, are mostly worried about their bottomlines... but hey, at lesat let us do it under wifi, okay, okay???
p.s. and even back-facing camera can make use of... uh... a mirror...

Would this work on a non root phone?

This seems to have a link to hack.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/06/skype-for-android-hacked/ (link to http://www.villainrom.co.uk/SGS2/skype045.php)
It seems to be signed with different key, so you must uninstall your Skype first.
If you try it, post results with your device model.

Won't sign in, HTC Legend, MDPI, no front camera. Oh well, was worth a try, considering MY specs.

Doesn't seem to work on Defy through.

Seems to work fine on SGS2
At least - initial test.

Devices with Front video calling camera MS portrait app

Has someone tried the Microsoft Portrait software, i know its a old beta but has someone tried it with a device with the video calling camera?

Microsoft Portrait
i have tried it with both tytn and tytnII and no luck, i didnt invest alot of time and got busy with life.. but i never got it to work.. im sure if someone actually devoted some time to it that it could possibly work..
thanks for your response
anyone else
i just got the chatting and talking to work but no camera even with a regular smartphone. has someone tried it with the wizard(mine does not work the camera)
A little old, but i'm looking for a video-conference software via wifi/activesync.
MS portrait doesn't recognize my Kaiser's cameras, but it's perfect in my Blue-Angel... But i don't use my BA anymore...
Is there any developer here interested in video capabilities of our devices ?
It can do almost everything, but I can't find a video-conferencing software, even with two cameras onboard...

Because there aren't. See my TiVi review posted about a month ago. Unfortunately, you'll need to use another platform (for example, Symbian or a tablet PC) if you do need video calling over IP.
Well... I'm really shocked that nobody in winmo's world is interested in developing a videoconferencing software via wifi... i'd do it if i could...
Portrait is a very good start, but we need something working with newer CPUs...

its was a while since i had posted this that i had run across this app, but even still now after a while from this being posted i have not seen anything like this, i would like to see it work on my XDA Flame b/c i dont have my wizard anymore(friend has it)........its a good idea but it seems now that this has to turn into a much bigger app, in the meaning of having more features and to be updated to be used in the other pc apps other then just the old msn messenger

As I stated: it's impossible to develop a video conferencing app compatible with all handsets. Also see http://msmobiles.com/f/viewtopic.php?t=20292 for more info on this linked from my latest Misc News ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400931 ).
Hey i got a TYTN I, 2008 model from rogers got a sweet deal on it on craigslist but nehows i am really interested in getting the front video camera to work on MSN, maybe even Yahoo and AIM which AIM i dount is more then Yahoo haven Web Caming on (video camera) i got the microsoft portrait program on and all i was able to do is see my rear camera and it was in black and white i might be wrong i did this at 3am under a new style pot light but also it seemed the camera was on its side when it wasnt lol but it would be so amazing if we could get a freeware plug-in for the new MSN Mobile but maybe msn mobile 5.0 verson would be easier just seems to me it would be able to be made more basically cause mobile 5 isnt as complex mobile as 6.0 or 6.1 anyhows im working on finding an app if theres one out there so i'll keep us all posted.

I travel a lot and so I tried setting this up on my Trinity and my wife's laptop. Running in the house via wifi worked. However, there was so much lag as to be unusable. Good luck. I hope someone has a new app for this. (Skype, hopefully).

I would like to see it work too-bought my directly from HTC & and a flyer was on top of the phone with a note saying the video camera was DISABLED!!

[Q] List of things Nexus S doesnt have that the Galaxy S does have?

Galaxy S has:
Removeable SD Card
Ability to watch movies without converting etc
Can use 3.5 jack to see movies etc on TV - not sure if the nexus s can do this or not
Bluetooth 3.0 - But its better that it has 2.1 so you can use wiimote
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head if anyone has any other things id like to know.

13GB SD card internal is more than enough for most people.
between all the streaming apps coming, and the apps on the market for playing divx, it shouldn't be an issue.
3.5 tv out should work, if not then most likely someone will write an app, or code a stock rom that includes the function.
meh. 3.0 is alright, but as you said, no wiimote and it has other issues as well.

SIM-lock and crapware?
much better video camera, 720p and suport for various codecs
I'm willing to bet the actual camera sensor in the Nexus S is identical to the Galaxy's. From pictures, the aperture looks the same, and also reviews of the Nexus S have noted how well the low light performance is, which is similar on the Galaxy S. I'm quite certain the lack of 720p is merely a software limitation rather than hardware being different... but of course this is all speculation.

it seems that still pictures are decent enough but video samples are terrible, for example this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDDn-MXzd3U in the background i truly cant tell whats on the video. There are many more examples on you tube, I hope they can fix it.
All "HD" video shot with cameraphones is terrible anyway. You're better off shooting in 480p.

Have you seen the Vibrant's video capabilities? I highly doubt it based on your comment. While the pics on it are average, the video it takes is EXTREMELY good.
I bet the lower capability video camera on the S is due to the lack of a SD slot.

yeah, i forgot to ask. I didnt see swype in any of the review. Is it possible that they even took that out?
What do you mean "took it out"? Swype has never been a part of Android, it is a carrier/manufacturer add-on.
There was a video review that showed what writing options the Ns came with, and Swype was not one of them - in fact, it only had Android Keyboard. Forgot which video.
BTW, what's the deal with Bluetooth 3.0 and the Wiimote? What happens, it prevents the Wiimote from working? I've never heard of this.
Third-party apps for WiiMote pairing do not work with Bluetooth 3.0 (or some skins, such as HTC Sense)
-TouchWiz
-Broken GPS
-Sim Locks

-Internal Storage Failures from trying to replace Laggy RFS Filesystem ( androidcentral .com/bell-samsung-galaxy-s-phones-dying-bad-hardware-or-bad-hacks )
-Froyo (Or in some cases, Eclair)
-Lack of official Google branding/support
-Lack of AOSP support (Which is why there's no official CyanogenMod release for Galaxy S Phones)

yeah, but somehow i hoped that when they team up with samsung they would bring over all the goods samsung (galaxy s) has to ofer (excelent camera, swype, codec support etc.). But they brought nothing except super amoled and plastic design.
Who knew that removing features would make the device better? =)

The one thing that matters most in a phone: ability to make calls when you're not in town or on a major highway. I.E.-a decent provider I.e.-Verizon

Skype 2.0 video released

The number of devices suported is very limited:
* Google Nexus S
* HTC Desire S
* Sony Ericsson Xperia neo
* Sony Ericsson Xperia pro
Strange decision for skype with only this devices suported ....
Unfortunately video call not suported for my Galaxy S.

same here, no video on galaxy s..
anyone knows how it identifies the phone? maybe if you modify it's identifier to nexus s it would work?
We need the guys that worked on the Netflix APK to take a look at it. I'd love for this to be on my sensation.
Oddly it doesn't work on the Nexus S 4G.
also now has a running service that doesn't let u close the app.
what is with devs that think their app is so great that you shouldn't be allowed to close it and it must remain constantly running?
Maybe change ur build.prop, like the nerflix app
Please hack this application !!!
could the magic combination be the latest Gingerbread + FFC?
One of the advantages to the latest Ginger, if I recall correctly, was native APIs for a front camera (until now, apps had to be coded for specific camera devices- that's why some video chat apps only supported some hardware).
Are these maybe the only devices running the latest Google update that happen to sport a front camera?
Start hacking! From the skype 2 apk:
Code:
{white:[{name:"HTC Saga", mft:"(?i)HTC",
board:"(?i)saga",
model:"(?i)HTC saga", product:"(?i)htc_saga",
device:"(?i)saga"},{name:"HTC Desire S", mft:"(?i)HTC",
board:"(?i)saga",
model:"(?i)HTC Desire S", product:"(?i)htc_saga",
device:"(?i)saga"},
{name:"Nexus S", mft:"(?i)samsung",
board:"(?i)herring",
model:"(?i)Nexus S",
product:"(?i)soju",
device:"(?i)crespo"},
{name:"Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo",mft:"(?i)Sony Ericsson",brand:"(?i)SEMC",board:"(?i)unknown",
model:"(?i)MT15[ai]", product:"(?i)MT15[ai]_.*",
device:"(?i)MT15[ai]"},{name:"Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro",mft:"(?i)Sony Ericsson",brand:"(?i)SEMC",board:"(?i)unknown",
model:"(?i)MK16[ai]", product:"(?i)MK16[ai]_.*",
device:"(?i)MK16[ai]"}]}
Where's the .apk? Would love to try this out on my Flyer.
Just occurred to me- Nexus S 4G isn't working. Nexus S GSM unlocked is.
Maybe the reason for these specific devices is Skype still has some kind of contract with Verizon for Droid video calling?
I recall Skype video on the Thunderbolt being an exclusive Android offering which VZ apparently paid for. Maybe Skype is allowed to offer Android for other non-US carrier affiliated devices? As far as I know, none of the phones offered are available through a national carrier here, and all have a front facing camera and the latest Gingerbread OS. Maybe I found the pattern?
Anyway, that being said, unlike the thunderbolt version which was heavily tied to that hardware, I bet we can crack this baby open to work on other Ginger devices at least!

Yes, you can try it on other devices running 2.3+ with front-cam.

From what I recall, Gtablet and CM7 don't work together nicely on the camera side of things.
Maybe try Vegan GE? I don't have it installed now to check.
That was with cm7 not cm7.1 rc the camera issues were resolved.
BTW I have the same error as the atrix guy
Maybe you could try the older build, but chances are it won't work too.
How do i install this?

[Q] Video chat

Wanting to do video chat with a friend of mine, and she said something about her using "Facetime" does that sound right? she has AT&T. looked up "facetime" for droid but can't find it. im on Verizon (Thunderbolt). is there an app that will let me video chat w/her but still let her use her "Facetime" app? or do we both need something like Skype?
I have the LG Revolution..you need GingerBread or 2.2.3 update to do any type of front facing chat
As far as I know, Facetime is a video-chatting application for iPhone / iPad only. It is restricted to those devices and won't work with Android, for instance.

It also only works over Wifi, so basically slightly less useful than other video chat phones.

Is the Archos 35 Home Connect rootable?

http://www.archos.com/products/ah/archos_35_hc/index.html?country=us&lang=en
So, i cam across this on a tech for old people article of cnet, of all places. but i was looking at it, and i'm curious about it. it looks like it could be a fun thing to tinker with, but is that even possible? It says it runs froyo, can't be too crippled because it has a web browser. Only has "AppsLib" tho, not the market.
Also i can't seem to find it anywhere online >_<
EDIT: wait a sec, has this thing even been released yet?
be honest I was looking at picking one of these up myself. The prospect of running Google music (I did get into that beta) and having access to all my music seems good. Alarm clock functions are also a plus. I imagine it will be root-able and someone will make a g-apps package for it. It has a front facing cam as well so it could possibly run skype, qik, etc. or if 2.3.4+ was installed, Google talk. The Chumby folks also released an android app that emulates a chumby device fully and connects to their services so you could use this as a chumby / Sony dash.
Once you have appslib, just download arctools and ta-dah! Instant LATEST market. As for being rootable, I think any Archos is. The only problem the 35 HC may have is lack of RAM/a slow processor...
