sorry if theres any mistakes on my writing!
how much improvement in battery life u have got????
and can u tell in detail about this DORMACY..???i am unfamiliar to this...
What is Fast Dormancy?
In simple terms its a
device feature that enables mobile devices to
notify the cellular base stations when the radio
resource allocated to the device is no longer in
use, so that the radio resource could be
immediately released other than waiting for a
timeout event. For instance lets say you are
browsing a webpage using your cellular data
plan. You stop at a certain webpage (for example
to read this article) the connection is maintained
and the device will be registered on the network
even if data isn’t received or transmitted (always
on) and will remain like that until a timeout event
is invoked (as per the network rules as to how
much time to wait before connection is
terminated due to idle timeout). During this time
the device’s battery will be drained needlessly in
addition to increased congestion on the cellular
network due to numerous idle connections. From
a device perspective radio power consumes
battery so employing fast dormancy should save
battery power and increase its life. This also has
an advantage to networks as it reduces
congestion. But This doesn’t come without a
major disadvantage to the very same cellular
networks and operators. The making and
breaking of the connections increases the
signaling traffic and wastes network resources.
The workaround to this was done by Nokia
Siemens in collaboration with Qualcomm to
employ NCFD or Network Control Fast Dormancy
in which the device is put on a battery saving
idle state while maintaining its network identity
without the need to establish a new connection
and request a new identity for the device on the
network.
You can also disable it by adding this line to ur build prop
Code:
ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=0

Ok I've done this since this noon, well I could say there is an obvious increase in battery LIFE, usually it'd be around 65-70%, now its in 88% with few calls, voip calls over wifi, browsing & SMS! Will w8 & see how long it lasts! Anyhow, thanz for the tip mate!

I had tried this a few months back and it resulted in a decrease in battery life.

Hello.
I've changed on my device this setting aswell.
My provider don't support fast dormancy, so I think this option is needed.
What I have noticed?
Bigger down/up speed, faster 3g appearance after screen on (using juice defender ultimate), bigger number of juice defender saved energy.. 1,7 to 1,96
Have no info about battery usage, lets wait for a couple days
9003, 2.2.1 stock kb1, root
how would one know whether or not service provider supports it? and if it supports, would it decrease the battery life instead of increasing?
Is there any harm?

Is there an application that monitors the battery consumption and can give you
results about the battery consumption of each process running on an Android
phone?
power tutor
*#*#4636#*#* from your dialpad
Thank you Blezz! It seems like what I was looking for.. When I installed it to
my HTC Hero, then a pop-up appeared:
"Your phone type is not recognized by PowerTutor.
You may continue to use Powertutor however we
may not be able to get all of the data for your phone
and the power calculations may not be accurate."
Maybe the calculations are not so accurate, but I will try it..
pprakash, this is cool, but I think this not provide exactly statistics about the battery
consumption for each of the processes running on the phone..
@daim0nas this provides a wealth of info. Only thing is you need to select the right drop down options. When ever I have any high battery drain problems. I usually look at Partial Wake processes, which will hold the phone from going to complete standby.
Not sure if this is the best solution, but I believe you said your running an HTC Hero right. If your interested in rooting and flashing a custom ROM on your phone, you could upgrade to Froyo or even Gingerbread perhaps. Built into either operating system is the ability to check exactly what is using battery and what percentage of your battery was used by it. Great feature
PowerTutor gives statistics only for the applications that run on the phone, but no for the processes.. I have rooted my phone and I am running some native C programs on it, and I want to find out what exactly is the battery consumption for these processes.. Is it possible to find it?

Hi, I've searched the forums a bit and every thread I saw relating to this topic was a bit outdated so I've decided to create a new one.
I recently got the Nexus S 4G and rooted it, I've been using Slim ICS and it seems to give me issues and the battery life is horrid. I'm wondering if some people can give me their opinions on the Roms/Kernels and set ups that have yielded the best performance and battery life. I don't use my phone for much but music, surfing the internet (very seldom) and texting/making calls.
Thank you everyone in advance.

Thank you guys for the input, I will check those out when I get off of work. Anyone else have any suggestions? I'll probably spend the next few days flashing and testing them out.
Codename Android coupled with air kernel is extremely stable and quick as any other ROM and battery life is good. Also it has a good amount of launcher and status bar customization.
If your looking for speed though, Apex is undoubtedly the quickest in terms of windows opening and closing.
I'll check out Codename as well. As for kernels and things like that, what is the best governor and kernel, or is that all dependent upon which ROM I'm using?
In terms of speed, stability and battery life; I'd rather have stability and battery life over speed if that makes any different. All 3 would be lovely but I'm more concerned with stability and battery life. If the phone won't stay on or stay charged it won't matter how fast it is.

Kernels do their own thing as far I know. I usually use noop with smartassv2 or wheatley. And as I mentioned before air kernel is REALLY nice and stable.
I've been using the predecessor of Apex because of 1.0.2 issues on my phone and its really quick just like apex because its basically the same and it doesn't really sacrifice battery life at all either. I would give it a go. Its bigxie 3.5 on his "all crespo4g builds" link in the original post

Hi,
I use the SLIM ICS Rom and Im getting awesome battery life....
Hmmm did you change anything on it?
Are you turning off the internet, wifi, gps and sync when not used?
Did you clear battery stats? This is normally best when you flash any ROM.
Or maybe a widget or app is doing the draining.
I would recommend reflashing it with the March 4th update just to make sure.
Good luck
SLIM ROM has great idle, and you can always use the battery saver mode... with this you can have the ROM turn off syn, wifi and data all by itself when screen is off... check it out

Wow, I'm a moron. I remembered seeing the Power Saver and always thought I had checked yes, I hadn't just the individual settings. I've now updated to 2.8 ICS Slim and I'm going to see how that goes.

Just make sure u tell the power saver mode what to do under the settings... the default may not be what u want....
RU using Google voice? If so the only reason u would change *86 to ur phone # would be to call sprint VM.... if ur using GV then it will automatically download to ur phone without using minutes to call regular voicemail
I was at 1st against GV but now it comes in quit handy like the original sprint VM ...
Go under GV settings and have the notifications set how u want them. U may have to go desktop version of GV to customize all the settings... just to make sure.

I've noticed with at least my Infuse that whenever I have my Wifi on I have significantly lower battery drain than when I have it off. I'm currently running Aeon 1.4 with Entropy's kernel but have noticed this with other kernels and ROMs that I've used. Screenshot attached showing that pretty much as soon as the wireless is turned off the battery usage takes a sudden drop and continues until it comes back on. Is there an issue with my phone or are there some settings that I should be aware of and try changing to remedy the issue?
I tried searching around before I made this thread and couldn't find anything that had the same issues I've been having. Any input would be appreciated.

I see what you are talking about, however I think the issue is less with your wifi being off as it is with your cell signal being low. Looking at the cap you provided I can see where in the second wifi off period you could think that the wifi was your problem, but look at the first. you have the same drain with the wifi off as you do with it turned on (practically). Change the modem. Find one that works great in your area, because with the modems for the infuse newer is not always better. Also you can try one of those little RF booster things that go on your phone behind the battery to boost signal. I know they seem like a scam, but they do sometimes give just enough boost to keep a phone from searching for signal when it should have great signal. But try flashing a new modem first.

Check the modem thread. I had some great luck with an older one (k1 I think it was). I have since passed on my infuse to my son, and I can ping his location within 15 yards in under 2 minutes. Giving FTL Launcher Lite a shot, if it doesn't work out or if it's not recommended I'll try out Launcher Pro, thanks again!

A few other things to check are: Make sure your phone is not always scanning for wifi networks.
If you are in an area of low cell signal and don't need your phone to call people, flip on airplane mode.
Turn off auto brightness... use the power widget (or the 17 notification toggle tweak) to change your brightness between 10% (low light) 20% (medium light) and full (when in bright daylight conditions).
There is somewhere a tweak to turn off H+ and 3G when not in those service areas, find it, use it. (Google *#*#4636#*#* or is it *#*#3646#*#*... idfk one of those...
Check your sns sync schedule for short times. Set them to a longer interval or off. You should check ALL sync schedules for this, calendar is a major culprit of this, even if you don't have one setup.
Install "badass battery monitor" use it to check wake locks and battery voltage and temp. It has a great "battery sucker" feature that will tell you what is draining your battery.
NEVER USE AUTO APP KILLERS! They do more harm than good. Hold home and open the task manager and kill the apps yourself. It will take 15 seconds and if you do it for 3 days a few times a day, it becomes a habit. Don't be all grrr and do it 60000000 times a day. Just every now and then.
If you have installed a few apps and launchers that didn't work out for you, I would say booting into recovery and clearing the cache or a reset are in order. Uninstalls rarely remove everything they should and leave behind bits of code that will suck your battery like a hidden mosquito you can never swat.
Probably the most helpful tidbit anyone can give you is to not stress over the battery life constantly. You have a wonderful device that you have spent a lot of time customizing to look the way you want it to look. The more you stress over the battery the more you will check it, turning on that big beautiful screen sucking even more life from it. Making user error the major battery sucker in the equation... You wanted that beautiful beast, enjoy it.
Sorry so long, but trying to be thorough and helpful. These are the major tips I used to get 5 days from my phone. But honestly after day 2 or 3 I started really cracking the whip and refused to use my phone for anything other than texting.

Its been about the same, possibly a bit better. I've been using the battery app you mentioned to find what's causing the drain and kinda working with it from there. However I was in an area with roaming for a week so I can't give an accurate conclusion.
The BCM4330's standby drain is extremely low. In addition, when active, it requires FAR less energy per byte of data transferred than the cell radio.
OF COURSE background syncs are going to use less power over wifi than over the cell radio.
The whole "turn your wifi off" to save power became invalid over a year ago. (Exception: If the wifi chip misbehaves, such as the infamous BT-AMP bug, but I haven't seen that in many months.)
Here a couple of threads I found regarding this mystery drain.
From the past:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224052&highlight=battery
Here is the i9000 battery drain issue I was refering to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
The last few pages hinted that the problem may have been fixed in later gb builds.
Our custom kernels was based of Roger's 2.3.3.
Would the bug be still in it?
Could this be why we (at least me anyway) are still seeing this?

The problem here is not the app, its not the rom or the device. The problem here is simply that using data drains the battery, speciall when on 3G. Battery drain is just one of those things we have to deal with when we have smart phones. They do more than ordinary dumb phones. Using the 3G radio will greatly decrease the charge because its constantly negotiating for signal and shunting data back and forth. If you want to decrease the drain, chat less, switch to 2G only, send less pics/vids/birthday cards from random website that looks cute.

I also have been experiencing increased battery drain in the past few days. The only recent change I have made is installing Whatsapp.
The problem here is not that the app is not well written, but the fact that the app uses data. Any application that uses data constantly will drain your battery, a hot phone usually indicates 3G use, 3G radios tend to get hot when they are used for extended periods. The same thing happens to a USB 3G Modem. The only way to prevent your battery going flat so quick, would be to stop using the device. There is an application somewhere that actually disables your radio (wifi or 3G) for a period, puts the device into deep sleep and then wakes it up to check for notifications. This might help a bit with your problem.
Hi guys.
Here is a mod I made to eliminate wake up lag on lock screen when pressing home button.
this mod is on the file androidpolicy.jar
my mod includes 4 way reboot and ink effect (WITH PEN ONLY)
download file and flash in recovery.
Thanks to MIKEYXDA for How To.....
Feel Free to use this in your ROMS, but please give credits
this mod is for LSZ!!!
PLEASE READ: This mod adds a wake lock to your phone and could prevent it from going into deep sleep.
I've added the Q and A from MIKEYXDA guide so you can make up your own mind.
please make a backup first!!!
Just to let users know this mod may not put your phone into deep sleep coz what the mod does is create a partial wakelock - that is how it enables zero wake-lag.

if this mod really make phone not going to sleep..it will make battery drain faster..
here is the Q and A from MIKEYXDA guide:

I did a lot of research on that and it's not so easy to answer. Generally, I believe battery will be no worse and possibly better. Google location services, alarms, widgets, push mail, and many other processes end up waking up 99% of phones at least once every 3 minutes anyway and the deep-sleep-->awake-->deep sleep cycles actually consume more power than letting the processor(s) stay awake. On my phone for example, Google location services alone woke the phone 20 times/hr (every 3 minutes) and that's with GPS turned off and no navigation or map activities running! Add a weather widget here, a push mail app there, and I found that my phone was bouncing in and out of deep sleep more than a hundred times an hour! Better (on both battery and circuitry) to just idle at that point. With only one CPU awake with screen off, the radio will draw more power than the CPU idling. Most people don't realize that the screen and radio eat orders of magnitude more power than (especially an idling) CPU, so idling one CPU will have little effect on battery. That said, I suppose if you put your phone in airplane mode and maybe froze a bunch of other apps that wake the phone, maybe battery would be worse with the ZeroWakeLag wakelock and the phone would do better in deep sleep. Reality is: we don't use our phones that way.
I guess the only way to test this is to run the mod for a while and see how it goes.
my battery I ****ed anyway and I have to charge twice a day so its not much of an issue for me, but for all you battery hungry folks out there it may cause issues.
would be nice if users could report any differences they see and we can together figure out if it is more of a hindrance than an advantage
deleted...should better read myself
Thanks.

forget it...was for homebutton doubleclick lag...yours is for homebutton lag on lockscreen...sorry
First thing you should know is that I am not a technical person, but a logical man. Following is my personal views. This mod may not put the device in deep sleep at all. In the cpu spy you will find above deep sleep, 200, 500, 800 mhz bars. Normally you may find even the deep sleep shows a good % the other bars 200,500,800 also show varied %s.
So may be this wakeup lag mod control these 200,500,800,1000 mhz to near zero, then overall battery consumption could be very less. Only experiments can answer this.
I shall flash this and see any difference.

haha OK no worries.
Eybee what are your views on the wakelock? think it could affect battery more than what you gain from the mod?

I don't care that small lag, cause I know as long as it is present, my device was in DeepSleep ...someone would have to test it for 1 day or so and check with CPUSpy if DeepSleep is 'normal' or not...

after almost a full day of use I can confim the device is not entering deep sleep.
spending most of its time running at 200
do you think this will have a massive affect on battery life?

Actually I was waiting for your reply.(pls refer my earlier post). Another thing is I have already got 4 way reboot and ink effect. I just wanted wake up lag mod. Any way I shall flash. Already made backup. Let you know after 24-48 hours. Thanks.

The problem with this mod is that it is integrated into android.policy.jar and if users wanted to disable it, they will have to flash the original android.policy.jar of the rom they are using. To achieve the same effect without modifying android.policy.jar, xda member sms200 has made an app that integrates this zero wake up lag in his app and users will be able to test or use it at will. HERE is the app and HERE is the post for more info. Just install it and enable/disable Permanent PWL.
I read through most of that tread and missed that bit lol
What ive done is copy original androidpolicy inside framework as androidpolicy.jar.bk and then copied original so i can revert at anytime. This is included in my rom aswell (both files)
Feel free to use my mod or the app depends what users prefer.
Dsmas - the 4way reboot and ink effect is included because if i didnt and you flashed the mod you would lose both functions.
Ive been testing some sharedpref mods and a remote control app so i might be able to create something to enable/disable in my galactus mod pack (WIP see my rom thread)
