AT&T SIM card question about swapping phones? - General Questions and Answers

I'm new to AT&T/GSM/SIM cards. My son has a dumb phone and he was just given a smart phone but they want us to pay $30 extra a month for data to use it. I would like to be able to use the phone for calls and texts without paying for the data. Can I just swap out the SIM card? If not, what do I need to do to get this working? Unlock the phone/SIM? There has to be a hack around this. Thanks.

I did the same thing and at&t automatically added data to that line. Call customer service and tell them to disable data on that line and have them remove the data plan from that line.

[Q] Data plan on unlocked phone

I just bought an Inspire 4G from ATT and was going to unlock it (probably going to buy an unlock code from htcimeiunlock).
My problem is, I dont want to pay for a data plan (I live in the city so there is wifi everywhere). Under our family plan, the phone is currently being used by my dad (who's paying for a data plan), but he realised he doesn't need all that and was going to downgrade to a non-smart phone (and cancel his data). I will then put my SIM card (which has no data plan attached to it) in his Inspire.
After I unlock the phone (but still use an ATT SIM), will ATT still be able to tell I'm now using a smart phone and instantly add a data plan onto my line? Or can I use it without having to pay for that and just go on the internet through wifi alone?

Yes, AT&T will automatically add it as the IMEI, which cannot be changed, is in their system.

Yes they can. My data plan is still from the iphone. I get a txt once a day saying a 4g data plan is required. If you have no data plan you will get a txt saying a data is required. They will eventually add it to your plan.
You may want to add the dumbphone data plan before installing your sim. I got 2gb/month for $10 when I gave my wife my Incite because her dumbphone had the data plan.

[Q] Data only plan for phone?

So I use my Nexus S for mostly data and have a WiFi network available to me 90% of the time so I just want data for the other 10% (so 2gigs per month should be plenty). I don't use a ton of min per month and want to port my number to google voice. I DON'T want to pay for minutes/texts through tmobile anymore.
I went to a tmobile store and looked at the hotspot devices they sell and found out they do have a sim card. Tmobile just sets it up to be data only which the won't do for phones. Anyway I'm tempted to buy a hotspot and just put the sim into my phone.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone has tried this on tmobile or any other national carrier? I'm not on contract and am willing to switch if I have to.

[Q] Can I use a SIM card from a tablet on a data plan in a smartphone?

The title expresses my basic question. If I had a tablet that was on a Verizon data plan, could I take the SIM card from it and put it in a smartphone (that had the same size SIM) and use that smartphone on the data plan of the tablet? I understand that I probably won't get the basic phone calls and texting capabilities.
My other question is do you think the following scenario will work, or is there a better way to get a data only plan for a smartphone on Verizon?
Go to Verizon store and purchase a tablet on a data plan. Purchase a Verizon smartphone off of eBay that matches the SIM size of the tablet. Swap the SIM card. Sell tablet on eBay. Set up smartphone with Google voice.
I have found multiple cases of people taking their smartphone SIM card and putting it in a Tablet to use the data on the smartphone plan. But I've never heard of someone doing it the other way. If I put the tablet SIM in the smartphone will I be able to pay by the minute for calls or will I be forced to a VOIP service?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Well I don't know how useful that scenario will be now that Verizon stopped subsidizing their tablets with contract purchases. I was hoping to purchase it on a contract then sell it for more to help with purchasing the phone off contract.
Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to go about this? I want to try and stick with Verizon because they have great coverage in my area.
First, ask them whether you can get the smartphone with data package. I got my dell streak that way.
With data plan you will be able only voip and sms.

I tried to talk them into that last fall and they wouldn't go for it. What I really want to do is get on their shared everything plan with me and my wife and have 2 smartphones on their tablet plan for $60. Which is way better than the $150+ we would pay for the regular smartphone plan.
Is it possible to buy a SIM card from them or ebay and have it activated as a tablet and then stick it in a smartphone? Could I just go in there and say, "I forgot my tablet at home and I need a new SIM card activated on a new plan." Then take it home and put it in myself?
When they activate new sim old sim is automatically deactivated. You can't have two sim on one data plan.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm banking on the fact that they will believe me that I have a tablet at home (even though I really don't) and that I need a new SIM card (for whatever reason, like i lost it or my device didnt come with one cuz I bought it on ebay). Basically, activating a new device. Do they NEED the device there at the store to activate the SIM?
No
So you're saying that I could walk into the Verizon store, tell them that I need 2 new SIM cards for my new tablets and ask them to activate them for me on their Shared Everything plan then go home and put those SIM cards into 2 smartphones and they will work on the data only plan?
Can anyone else verify this as well?

I've found from people on HowardForums that this isn't possible. The verizon people need the IMEI of a device to activate the SIM card for it. Also, from them I learned that it is possible to put a SIM from a tablet into a smartphone and use it on data only. I just need to make sure the SIMs are the same size between the two. If I were to sell the tablet afterwards it would have a "bad ESN" and not be able to be activated on the Verizon network because it would be tied to my account. The tablet would still be usable as wifi only.

3G AT&T

Purchased the 3G version off Ebay, and went to At&t in the US to get a data plan activated but they couldn't activate it. Something about it not being in their system yet - so they couldn't set it up. Has anyone had this issue?
Thanks,
Jim
Yes. I tried to get a data plan on mine the other day and was told that the only data only plan they could put on it was the 5gb plan for $50. If I wanted to get less data I was told I would need a voice plan. All I want is some prepaid data for every now and again when I travel.

Activate in a cheap dumb phone and move it over? Nobody uses Google anymore?

Can a 3g owner confirm whether this phone has a SIM or microSIM? If youve already gotten one from ATT, which dumbphone did you buy?
It uses a REGULAR sim card. I've been been swapping my T-Mobile and AT&T regular sim cards in and out all this week.

Data only plan question

I was looking to get a data only plan on my s6 through Verizon but I know the only way to do it is to activate the plan on a tablet and then switch the SIM into the s6..my question is if I don't have a tablet, can I just call the sales department at Verizon and have them send me a SIM with the data plan on it and be good to go, or will I have to physically put it into a tablet first and then swap out.
