best ram manager/optimizer? - General Questions and Answers

basically ive got 100's of apps installed on my phone and many still run in the background using up alot of ram memory and causing the phone to lag occasionaly, any1 recommend any good ram manager apps that would help speed up my phone? thx
p.s. please dont ask me to delete sum apps

did you tried with tweak scripts, like supercharger???

I tried a lot of task managers, but in fact you do not need one. Take a loot at the app Cache Cleaner. It cleans cache an helps apps to lag less often (like facebook for example).

No RAM manager is the best RAM manager.
And if we are talking about cleaning apps, check out SD Maid, it may look a bit more complicated than cache cleaner but is more thorough.

Android is designed to run without a task manager. Its definitely a myth that it saves you any battery life or helps with memory. Android automatically kills a task when more memory is needed, its done doing what its doing or if you haven't returned in a long time. If you kill a task before it is ready it will just reopen and start from scratch.

Actually, RAM optimizers are a waste and actually counterproductive in most cases. This is because in android, free RAM is wasted RAM from a multitasking perspective. The default android RAM optimizations are just fine in most cases, most other tweaks actually sacrifice something somewhere, this causes the device to constantly have to reload and cache the same data repeatedly after the optimizer kills it. This creates more workload on the CPU/GPU and more battery usage.

You should use clean master it has , a on click ram booster and 1 click apps hibernate system , and 1 click cache cleaner , you can add these features directly as widget , it solve hanging problem on low end devices

Whats Best way to free up the ram???

Whats best way to free up the more ram? I have root and froze the safe stuff. The lowest I can get free is about 185MB / 328MB.
Rooting and freezing apps doesn't give you more RAM, since there is only 512MB of RAM and the OS takes part of that to run.
You can free up internal app storage space, by deleting bloatware, or cut/paste the bloatware into a folder on the SDcard (I call mine VZWBloat) and that will save you space.
You can run a task killer to kill off apps that you don't need but you have to be careful, Android does need certain apps to be available in the background and it will just reopen automatically and that will put them into a cycle and drain the battery.

Freeing up that much RAM is probably detrimental to the overall efficacy of the memory management system, I've never seen mine at 185MB, and if I did I'd worry something was wrong.
If you really want to free up more RAM, for no benefit whatsoever, use something like Advanced Task Killer and set it to allow killing of the lowest level processes it can, then kill everything. Bam, tons of free'd up RAM. Again, this has pretty much no benefit whatsoever and for a short time will probably make your phone more sluggish and slow.
In Android (Linux) free memory is considered wasted memory.
That said, I remember on my galaxy S that the phone ran snappier when I tweaked the memory management of the phone.
Task killers are generally considered a bad idea on android, so I would avoid using one of them to free up memory. However, there is a poorly named app called auto killer that is actually just an interface to tweaking androids built and memory management. I recommend giving it a try, here's a link: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.rs.autokiller
Note that it is not a task killer per se, it is just a tweak for android phone memory management schemes.
I haven't used it on my droid charge yet, but play with the settings maybe starting with aggressive. Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

I don't have my phone with me right now, but you need to make the folder read/write and then hit menu and multi-select or select multiple. This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082588 shows what is ok to freeze, but I am not familiar enough with those to say you can remove all of them. Typically I would look for the Verizon specific apps, games like lets gold, guitar hero etc. If you remove anything related to touch wiz (widgets) you need to remove both of the associated files. I am pulling this from memory on my previous TB.
These are the ones I recognize, but the others in that long list I would like to see better clarification of what they are and how they are tied into the TouchWiz UI so we don't get errors. Please exercise caution when doing this.

BY FAR.... BAR NONE.... The best way to free up memory and keep it free without messing with task killers is to use a program called startup auditor. This app prevents apps from starting up automatically on startup and throughtout the day without interfering with normal app processes. You can shut down or enable any app you want.
Even cooler, if you select the option menu and hit disable all, it only disables programs that won't interfere with the phone operation so it knows which apk's are critical for phone integrity. PRETTY COOL!!!

There is an app called Greenify. Its available on Play store.
Just check it out.
It also helps to maintain the juice of the battery.. !!
To Free Ram
A more easy way to delete a minimum of 1gb of space which by doing so also frees up ram is to delete the dump state log cat. See every time your device has an error or force close issue, date is collected / written to the log file and this can take up ane enormous amount of space which when space is low also means your device user more ram. To do this go to your dial pad and type in *#9900#
This will automatically brings up options and then just choose to delete the dump state/log cat. Let it clear for a few minutes and that's it's. Try seeing how much space you have before and after and you'll realise this is a blessing.

[Q] Is adanced task manager good for our xt720?

I've seen a lot of debates abt whether advanced task manager is good for the phone or not but im not sure if it has a positive effect on our xt720 with very little ram, so does it make more sense to use advanced task manager?? Btw im talking abt the 2.1 version of xt720 not the dexter's froyo or anything else. any help would be appreciated!
Advanced task manager is an app and task killer. Although discussion is varied it is safe to say a majority of very computer literate people tend to think task killers are bad for your phone and actually cause more battery drain in the end.
It is important to know how android handles memory. When you open an app for example the browser, and then move to gmail android puts the browser in an idle state. If after that you open say google maps and your phone has no more free memory android will kill your first process the browser to make space. The apps which are idle take no memory resources and just sit there. Killing idle apps, which usually reappear as soon as they are killed drain more juice, and are slow to launch.
A better app to use is the Autokiller memory optimizer. It uses a script to change androids own parameters at boot. So you can specify at what ram you want android to kill the idle apps. It does not involve killing apps and lets android handle everything. Ive been using it for quite some time and my phone is snappy fast and has around 60-70MB ram free all the time. I use the strict settings anything about that free's too much ram. Ofcourse your phone needs to be rooted for this to work.

Im trying the app now so far so good. After i put it in strict level, there is nothing else that i should be doing with the app rite? i can just continue with the normal use of my phone rite? thx a lot! oh and i already uninstalled advanced task manager.
Nopes, just use your phone as you would Use the lowest settings that make your phone feel fast. How much free memory are you getting now? Also reboot your phone once. I've used the strict settings makes my phone feel great lemme know how it works out for you.
You should also use milestone overclock to overclock your processor if you dont already. Its available on the market for free. I use 1 Ghz, 74 Vsel!
After using the memory app, I have also 60-70mb free oh and I also use milestone overclock my settings are 1ghz 62vsel. What are the advantages of increasing the vsel value?
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using XDA App
I find that having a higher vsel keeps the system more stable during memory intensive tasks. Also I found no difference in battery life thats why I use the stock presets. Before I used 56 vsel 1 ghz but when I opened up the camera or something the system would hang and reboot. Try it out, its also much faster
More vsel actually drains the battery faster. From my experiance and recomnendations I found out that 1Ghz @ 66vsel is my optimal setting.
About ATK and Autokiller memory optimizer - crap! I preffer Running service and Manage application to deal with programs if I need to, but I mostly let Android decide for himself. My phone always have around 60MB free memory and ROM is fast and very responsive.
Also you may wanna try JuceDefender. Awesome app which saves you battery and clears RAM, if you are not feeling comfortable doing it yourself.

Umm, I think you're confusing autokiller memory optimizer with the normal task killers. Look it up, it isnt a task killer but changes androids native application management parameters. Which ROM are you on?
Also ive used ultimate juice for sometime. It doesnt clear RAM, it just toggles your data and wifi according to options you set. I also noticed that without juice defender my phone works just as much so dont know how much that helps.
Battery calibration after new ROM flash has always made my battery meter more accurate and lasts longer.
I very well may and I apologize for that.
Actually I use recovery mode options to set the aggressiveness of the running service and I'm more than satisfied.

How did you do that. I am running steelblue also and can always tweak it more. Is it through Androidiani recovery that you set the aggressiveness. I might start a thread tomorrow about all the things Androidiani does and how to use them. Haven't been able to find too much on it, but I know alot of people use it.

[Q]ram problem

Hey guys, I have a problem with my RAM u see I only have about 140mb of RAM, which when I bought my phone they said that they was going to be 768mb of RAM. So the problem is that whenever I kill all app using advance task killer, there would only be maximum of 200mba of RAM.but now after flashing a ROM the maximum RAM is 140mb n after opening one or two apps my phone necessary really laggy as I would only have 60 MBA left.on top of that my internet takes up about 80 MBA. So I am angry about this. So is there anesthesia else to increase the ram?thx
Your phone is broken; You should sell it to me. I'm joking of course, I don't want your broken POS. Lol Im sorry, I mean nothing is wrong with your phone.
256 is dedicated to the gpu, then another 300 or so is dedicated to the OS, and Rosie UI. The rest of that is what you're seeing. Don't worry though, 140MB is plenty of memory. You need to uninstall your 3rd party task killer and just enjoy using the phone.

If you are flashing roms, then I assume you are rooted. Get Titanium Backup and freeze Sense. That will free up RAM and speed up your phone. I am using ADW EX on the stock ROM and I froze Sense (found two parts of it in Titanium). My phone is faster than hell...
Matt
Even with sense running your phone shouldn't lag unless one of your apps isn't working properly. The way android background processes work, if an active application needs more ram than is currently free, the android system will automatically kill inactive app(s) to free up memory. The problem is with poorly written apps that maintain active status when they are no longer active or have unnecessary services that relaunch themselves when they are killed. Your task killer cannot fix poor coding. It only provides a placebo effect. At best it is unnecessary, at worst it will exacerbate the issue.

Have you considered flashin another rom, or reflashing the one you're using ? It might help.
It happened to me as well : phone was laggy and sloooow. I went into Recovery, wiped all data, applied the super wipe script (just to be sure) and flashed again my rom.

Most rom devs seem to recommend giving your phone a day or 2 of normal usage to let the android os 'settle down'.

Well yes, you will lose all your data. As mentioned higher, you can use Titanium Backup to save them.
As for your messages, you can use a small app, like SMS Backup and Restore (free on the Market) to save everyting on your SD Card, and restore them after you're done.
Reagrding the max multitasking apps, I admit I don't know how many of them can be kept running. I usually have 2 or 3 of them going at the same time, rarely more.

He's saying that your free ram amount is pretty normal. I want to know where you're getting the free ram amount from? If its from task manager (included or third party) its probably wrong. Go to settings>applications>running services and look at the bottom. I found that to be the most consistant regardless of device. BTW, I currently have 215mb free with ~20+ apps running and I never kill anything. In comparison, task manager shows 97mb free with only 4 running apps.

that's because task manager shows only completely unused ram. Running processes in the settings menu shows unused ram as well as cached processes. Cached processes are automatically ended when ram is needed so the android system includes that ram in the available ram count. Task manager does not do this. It will only show the unused ram. If you take your total ram (from running services menu in settings) and subtract the total amount of ram used by cached processes the numbers in task manger will march the new total. Example:
Running services shows 332MB (this is my actual numbers by the way) with 162MB used by cached processes. Task manager shows 170MB free. The numbers add up.
332MB - 162MB = 170MB

[GUIDE] Ways To Speed Up Your Device

Are you tired of the fact that your device is lagging a lot when switching between screens or in gaming ??? Here is a little guide to speed up your device in most cases
1. Most common thing which is now popular with lovely pico owners is the new cute_price's oc kernel technique which could overclock your device without harming your nand, which we call as nand burn. cute_prince's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337886
In this case you can use these kernels- Jarvis kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2325345
Pandora kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2238754
2. you can use some task killers and an app called ram manager free & pro versions: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartprojects.RAMOptimizationFree
this app helps to clear all the task running in background and freeing up maximum ram, you also get different profiles like more free memory, hard multitasking, hard gaming etc.
3. You can use an app called Greenify: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
this app hibernates apps that are not in use to maximize free ram space and boosts up the speed of the device.
4. Reboot your device atleast once in 2 days so to load all the processes and apps to bring back the smoothness.
5. clear cache under recovery of the device
6. as mentioned above you can try some kernel that can overclock your device uptill 800mhz or higher (higher the speed, maximum chances of nand burn ) you don't need to create any special partitions for these kernels.
7. don't move data to sd-ext if you have a sd card partition, this decreases the speed for loading apps and lags your device.
8. Avoid live wallpapers because these acquire ram as well as cpu and drain battery with a faster speed.
9. Disable auto sync of data.
10. Disable unwanted apps to freeze the process completely
11. Uninstall unwanted apps so as to increase internal storage and increase performance (menu loading time and os loading time)
12. Decrease use of widgets because these use hell lot of ram and cpu usage.
To determine which process is running the most in background, better use better battery stats app from the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats
13. Hit Thanx the most important thing that would speed up your device
Reply some other techniques that you use and i am gonna add them too, these were my own ways to boost up
I don't use scripts because they don't help a lot (no offence )

How to increase RAM?

I've flashed my HTC Pico with HTC SENSE 5 Build 6 and i am getting only 150 mb of ram . I have partitioned my SD Card with 1 GB and tried doing with S2E and multimount like apps but all in vain.. Please Help..
U can't increase physical ram. However u can increase free ram memory by using greenify and zd box. Greenify helps in force closing of the apps depending on how u have configured and zd box(enable root task killer) helps in closing most of the system apps. Usually task managers actually reduce performance. Since we have low memory and using sense 5 we are left with no options. Don't try any other bogus task killing apps.
Hit thanks if I helped u
