I've seen a few places suggesting that CWM Touch is 'better' for flashing ICS ROMs and I've been having a few issues, so I figured I'd check it out. As it turns out, the only way (I've seen) to install CWM Touch is using Odin. I'm on a Mac and I don't have access to a PC, and since I'm on an 80GB SSD I don't have room for a VM just to install Odin.
So, can I install CWM Touch without flashing through Odin, and if so how?
Thanks!
I use this now. Try it out.

I cant get my sidekick to flash anything. First off, I have rooted it using 2 different methods and Android Commander wont say it has root access so I cant push the Recovery binary file.
I have a few different roms ive been dying to try but everytime I flash them I get soft bricked at the samsung screen. I cleared the data and made sure it matched everything posted but still no luck because of the binary.
I have Odin'd back to stock KD1 2.2.1. Please point me in the right direction, I cant even ADB push it because its saying no root access but I clearly have SU on my phone, and I also tried downloading both busyboxes and rom manager.
You have this posed in the wrong part and what cwm do you have red or orange

Please search next time.
also, please note that this is a FAKE FLASH, which means that when you reboot into recovery, it will look like a stock recovery until you press the "reinstall packages" button.
I am having the same issues as you cwm doesn't even work have the time only rom that I can get half way working is clean fusion v3 other roms I have tried
Gingerclone v2 and 1(got soft bricked)
Smooth maximus x (got soft bricked)
Clean fusion v3 (working szo far)
Also in cwm I can't even do a reset without it hanging at formatting android.secure nor can I do an nandroid backup with out it faling on backing up boot image
Any help at all?

Im not too sure about all this yet, but one I downloaded the recovery binary file I extracted that, put that on my sd card then moved it to the /system/bin folder using Root Explorer and that fixed any problems I had.
As for clockwork, just install it from the 2nd link here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453)
put that in your SD card, hold power up vol and down until you get to recovery then install packages then go from there, just make sure you unmount the sd card from CWM.
I have been trying to use Odin with no success recognizing my device. So I am giving up for now.
My question is can I use CWM or rom manager to flash a rom without Odin. I am stock froyo 2.2 and was wanting to flash another custom froyo rom like fasty or similiar. Can this be done without Odin? Thx

If you don't want to use ODIN you will have to find the method to get around the 3e recovery in order to use ClockworkMod recovery. You'll need something like Root Explorer from the Market so you can move files around. Search in the forums for 3e recovery workaround.
When you get that, then just put the zip of any froyo rom on your internal sd card and flash it through CWM.
This is the most simple type of flashing so if I lost you, your best bet is to read as much as you can about flashing froyo roms. Luckily, it is generally safer than trying to start out with gingerbread roms.

Have you considered giving Heimdall a try?
You may also want to check the options in the "Connection Issues" post in my signature.
That's what I needed to know. I put the 2e recovery fix through root explorer. So I should be in good shape. So I wipe everything, and does it matter what CWM I have. I just installed CWM thru rom manager.
PS I am gonna try hemidall soon.
Thx

Theoretically, if you have the 2e recovery fix done you can flash the new rom from the recovery menu with no problems. The new rom will just replace the old one but all your data will stay where it was.
I would suggest backing up and flashing from stock because most roms run better this way. But, to each his own.
Lastly, Rom Manager sucks for Galaxy S phones. You should really learn how to use odin because there have been some problems when people use rom manager.
Ok just got this phone and have decided to go with Phoenix Blood rom, but how do i start? I have to be on froyo to root? Im coming from samsung epic on sprint that i flashed so im not completely retarded. Thanks for any help
Use superoneclick to root on froyo.
If your on 2.3.3 gb there's a flashable. Zip in development section to root.
Also you will want to use tgagunnmans nvflash method to install clockworkmod recovery in dev section.
Phoenix blood is a great choice btw, enjoy!

You're still on Froyo? To my understanding it's a good idea to flash the OTA GB first so that you'll get the up to date baseband. Once that's done just go ahead and flash PB.
no im on gb jsut thought i had to go back to froyo to root, so i just flash clockwork mod then pb and thats it?

Yes, but make sure you're using NVFlash to get CWM. Don't use Rom Manager.
Easiest way is using the tool unlockroot. It supports gb on the G2X. Or you can use nvflash, whichever you prefer.

If he wants to change Roms he will still need Nvflash regardless how he gets it rooted.

From that thread:
Flashing the custom recovery using NvFlash is the only way to ensure that in the case your phone will not boot up, you will be able to get into recovery to fix the issue / flash a ROM / restore from nandroid backup. That is what this app will do for you.
If you flashed the ClockworkMod recovery from ROM Manager it does not flash the recovery to your phone, it fake flashed it. The only way you can gain access to ClockworkMod recovery is through ROM Manager at that point. Using this method is the only way to flash recovery so it is persistent and accessible booting to recovery.
If you have already flashed through ROM Manager you can still proceed with this method. Flash Away!
(You can use both ROM Manager CWM and have the nvflashed version working together. You just access either or one at a time, having the nvflashed one means you can boot to CWM. Welcome to Tegra2)

Follow the link. This is a must for tegra 2 based phones. It is always better to be safe than sorry and it also allows you to do a ton of other things, such as making backups and flashing roms. Let us know if you need help. The phone is pretty much unbrickable after you do this. It gives you the ability to recover from any major mistake.
Its in the dev thread, it low level flashes clockworkmod recovery to our phones internal memory partition. You need to install apx drivers first in order for the g2x to be nvflashed.

thanks for the help guys got it all set up
Just to add in, nvflash allows u to boot into cwm recovery whenever u want and u don't need to be next to a computer. I think that is how it worked for Samsung phones and Odin, where u needed a computer, but haven't used a Samsung phone so I could be wrong. Remember always make a back up of everything and play around with the different roms, not every rom works for everyone

Actually Odin is just like nvflash. It is used to put cwm on you phone and to put the stock recovery back on.
Once you have cwm you can flash what ever rom or kernel without the need for root. Just back up your stock unrooted stock rom before flashing anything else.
If you do that you will have your own stock backup with no need of finding it in the forums if you need to go back to stock.

I have seen several people have issues with Rom Manager on these tabs, including boot corruption that required using ODIN to reload stock ROM. I don;t use Rom Manager and I would recommend you use Odin to flash the latest CWM instead.

+1
rom manager is a great idea and works good i guess on some devices (i have yet to find one), but i believe it to be on the same list as programs like titanium backup.... possibly dangerous... take digitalMD advise and use recovery for flashing, stay away from flashing anything with an app....
Well could any1 point me into a root for this? And do you absolutely have to have a sd card?

p3113 is a 7" so go to the 7" development thread.
this is the method I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788625 except I did a few things different, the 2 files it says to copy to the external SD I copied to the internal storage, I turned on USB debugging before powering off to put the tablet into download mode and I used a newer version of the CWM tar file, that has since been replaced by a CWM zip file that is just for updating the version of CWM you have. attached is the touch version of the CWM that I used when I rooted.
I can't see any reason why you would need an SD card to do this, I have one but thats because this is primarily a music player for me so I need the storage, personally I use the internal storage for ROM zips and things that you flash in CWM.
i was flashing from liquids 4.2.2 back to one of the cm9 roms after i flashed in cwm and rebooted the phone wont load past the galaxy s 4g tmobile splash screen. i can get in to cwm and into download mode but nither heimdall oneclick or odin are flashing it back to a bootable state. i have also tried to re flash a rom via cwm but no joy their either and suggestions before i bite the bullet and buy a nexus 4 ?

Uninstall odin & heimdall drivers. They will clash. Try different usb port/cable.
The price just dropped to under 2 bills for the smaller version. 250 for the other.

i finally got it working. thanks though. I was doing odin on my laptop and heimdall on my desktop,.
i got it in to cwm, then flashed a vahalla black (it was the only gb rom on my sd) then cm9 then cm10.1. and it worked befor i was just trying to reflash cm9 or cm10.1 though i never did get odin or heimdall to work.
I though for sure my internal storage was bjorked.
Sounds like it didn't convert too mtd. Now that your on cm9, it should flash properly.
