Due to the type of root available. Only a Odin pre rooted tar, there is not much to do. There is no clockwork recovery so an nandroid back up is not possible. The root is going to require a fresh install because you are basically replacing the entire os with a new rooted copy. If anything happens and u want to go back just reflash. My backup pro or titanium seems to be the only way to save and carryover data.

It's really quite simple. Open rom manager, scroll down, click backup current rom. Don't touch anything till it reboots.
Oh and restoring a backup of your rooted rom won't revert your phone to being unrooted. If you are going to send it in you may need to unroot and lock your bootloader. I've never sent a phone in so I'm not a 100% though.
Yeah i heard about needing to lockboatloader etc i might just use my free phone insurance from my bank and claim a lost phone. Is this the same for kernals i think i had read something as i want cyanogen mod and kernal so i can get voodoo

I am brand new to the Android OS and I heard from some friends that rooting is very similar to "jailbreaking" on the iPhone in the sense that you gain a lot of extra features and are able to sideload apps, etc.
I have a few questions before I do my root. Also, I do not want to install Android 2.3 or any other OS on my phone. I want to keep the stock OS, except I want my phone to be rooted (if that works). The guide my friends showed me was this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
1. If I root my phone and then install an HTC or AT&T update, does my root go away (HTC Inspire 4G locked to AT&T).
2. Can I remove the AT&T lock so I can use my phone in Europe if I root?

+1! I learned this the hard way haha.....I went flash crazy once with mods, and one of them went wrong. I hadn't made a backup in almost a week, so I had a lot of work to do to get everything back the way I like it. Now, I religiously do a backup before doing any mod, everytime . Time consuming, yes, but it'll save you A LOT of time if something goes wrong.

1- rooting is the hardest /most dangerous part(not that its dangerous, but its more dangerous than flashing a rom/kernel simply cause your flashing a radio). Flashing a rom is simple/safe. After you root don't not flash a rom cause you think its dangerous or you'll brick your phone-you wont.
2- I haven't made a nandroid backup ever. If you soft brick your phone, knowing adb is way more important than a backup. I've bricked my phone probably more than everybody in this thread x50, adb saves me everytime. Even if the computer wont see your phone when it boots, 99.9% of the time it will see it when in recovery, so this is what will really save you. Reboot the phone to recovery, use adb to fix whatever broke from the mod/whatever you just did.
(I'm not saying don't make backups, I'm saying learn adb - it can more likely save your ass than anything. Learn it)

But I seriously think I effed up my phone and I really need someone to help me fix it. I was trying to root it via this youtube vid:
How to Root Samsung Galaxy S 4G Gingerbread 2.3.6 Part 1
But now it's stuck in an infnite static boot loop and sometimes won't even turn on. Is there any possible way to fix this or at least get it back to it's original software

You will hv to download ur phone's firmware an use odin to restore it to factory defaults, just google search ur phone's firmware ul find it an use odin ul be good

1. Get odin
2. Google search your phones factory firmware
3. Google search how to Factory Reset from boot cause im to lazy to go that far. its all over this forum.
and for the dude above me. just cause you have superuser on you phone does not mean it is rooted. have you used applications like setCPU, if so does it allow root access. if not you do not have a rooted phone. superoneclick. use it. its geat
Yeah, Odin is your best bet to go. Make sure you get the correct firmware. Whatever you do do some research on the stock Galaxy S 4G Gingerbread firmware if you make a mistake loading the wrong files and letting odin to go to work you will dead brick the phone. There will be a still chance on recovering it but you will need a person that can do that and there are some here, they will charge you like $30 for it at least. Good luck

My phone: Htc One X is rooted, and a software update just arrived, if i update, will i loose the root?
Or will it in worst chase get bricked?
I regulary update over the air.
Will this remove the root? and must i unlock bootloader and all that stuff i messed with over again if i need to root again?
I wouldn't do that if I were you, you could loss root and have to start all over, and maybe brick your phone, I would wait and see if a dev for this phone could make the update into a Rom, that would be the safe way to go

So wait...let me get this straight. You got a $600 phone and decided to root it. You had no clue what you can and can't do with root up to and including an update. And you rooted your phone without knowing how to get back to stock. I am guessing you don't know how to get back to stock because you used a one click root method. WTF would you root $600 phone for if you had no clue what you were doing, and obviously incapable of reading how to reverse what you have done? This is the problem with one click root methods. You get no understanding of the Android system at all. Can I ask, what was the reason you decided to root??
i did not use oneclickroot, but the tool that xda has as an all in one tool for one x.
I rooted to get the fraps smiliar app screencast but it does not have support for tegra 3...
So yes, if i get it back to its original state, i will not attend any more root anymore.

Download the latest CWM Recovery and flash it as you did the previous, would be smart to get the CWM Touch version.
Well lets see with a rooted phone, you can install apps from various APK files, some of which allow you to use your device as a tethered modem for a laptop or Tablet. What more can you do with a rooted phone, well you can install various custom ROM's, but if you are not familiar with that aspect, READ, READ, and READ some more take several days to read on how to do it, before you download anything to do it. NO ONE will take responsibility for anything that you do to your device, except for yourself. You brick it you buy it.
There are a LOT of custom ROMs out there, read up on them, and find one that suits you. Don't just flash the first one you see, be as best informed as you can possibly be.

Get Super Manager from market. Copy the whole EFS folder to an external sd card. Then from there copy it over to your comp. This way you have two backups of the whole thing.

After I had rooted mine, I went in and was able to use tethering WITHOUT an app, nor making changes. (that I recall). Mine was still ICS Stock but rooted.

Flash the moded 6.0.15 cwm recovery from sk8erwitskil in the dev section and it has the option to backup the efs as an img..Just copying the efs folder will not do a crap for you cause the permissions are messed up this way...And by the way learn to do things by your own (by reading here) ... Its xda here not a cooking forum and links to google play store..
