So what would be the best way for me to sample a rom but keep a backup to my current ARHD rom that I ciuyld just go into recovery and restore it just in case I dont like the new rom?
Im thinking just to make a backup now, superwipe + flash new rom , and if I dont like it just restore into the backup I made. Is it really as simple as that? Sorry for this stupid and long question, but I really dont want to brick my new sensation.

Just as simple as that.
Go in recovery. Do a backup of your current rom.
Wipe and try new rom. Like it yay! Don't like it then just restore in recovery. Back to where you left off.
Ah thank you. Its nice to have an answer from a developer also
there is a thread somewhere which allows dual booting of 2 ROMs... Im not sure which ROMs are supported or where the thread is, But a quick search ought to bring it up.
Its a brilliant concept that allows you to choose upon boot which ROM you would like... You can keep your current favourite one, But also boot up the next ROM that you are considering... If you dont like it. Boot back....

I was quite disappointed by not getting a reply to my questions in my phone section so i decided to post it here, hope you guys'll help me out.
Before i perform flashing a rom, i have a couple of questions to ask you.
1. I'm not familiar with nandroid backup and all that. So if someone can give me some explaination of how it works and what i need to do to have a backup of my rom so i can flash back to orignal one whenever i want?
2. Also i heard from people that after flashing some ROMs, you can't get back to stock rom (recovery), if so then how you know that certain rom isn't flashable
3. Is there a difference between recovering (flashing stock rom) and downgrading? if so then what?
4. How can one brick cellphone and how to recover back, is it easy to brick?
Also some basics if i need to know so that i don't brick my cellphone and can easily get back to my official rom whenever i want. Please do tell me anything which i should know, Thanks !
I am planning to remove ATT junk from my Captivate phone. I have rooted it already. But I want to create a full backup before I start major surgery work on it because I am still testing the phone and within 30days period.
If I find it not a good experience, I may want to return it. And all I want to do at the time is restore from this backup, unroot and return.
Is there a way to achieve this easily on Captivate? Coming from G1, which was easy to hack into. In fact I even wrote a script for it at some point of time.
Also, there are tonnes of ROMs on this forum. Which one is considered the most stable 2.2 ROM?

That would mean that I need to undo more stuff (remove recovery and rom manager) if I want to return. I heard something about a temporary recovery from Koush which goes away with a reboot. Does that have a backup built into it? Or are u talking about the same thing?

Update.zip that gives you clockwork recovery. Do not need to be rooted to use this. Can backup and flash roms
Everything always sems so easy when your already know what you're talking about. But to Idiots and newbies its all strange phrases with no links attached and unknown abbreviations tha only frustrate I wish people would just explaiin just wtf it is they are talking about.
That link for clock work recovery does work and when you press the backup button in Rom manager, The phone will reboot in to recovery mode where you will then select the option to reinstall packages. Then you will be taken to a menu in which you can select to "back up and Restore" your current "Rom"(Stock, unrooted, rooted whatver), just select it and wait a few minutes and then you are backed up!
THen just select reboot.

Also Rom Manager in the market is great if you are rooted, Makes getting clockwork easy and flashing a breeze Great program, but if you are flashing kernels beware you must backup your kernel separately from your rom because Rom Manager doesn't recognize .zip files by certain kernel flashers SGS kernel Im Prety sure of that I'll hope someone corrects me on that or edit When i find out.

If you've rooted and flashed on a G1 then you should be good. It's not that hard.

Rom manager is a good tool for people getting started, all it is though is a user interface for clockwork recovery. Once you learn how to use clockwork rom manager is relatively useless. Especially when on roms with custom recovery.
You are correct rom manager does not backup kernel or modem. You can not restore a backup of stock over a custom rom without flashing stock kernel and modem

Before i'm going to install a custom rom i just wanted to ask something. Lets say if i manage to install one incorrectly and my phone doesn't boot. Do i go into xrecovery and restore the phone with the backup i made or do i have to something else?

yerr restore the phone with the backup youve made then repeat the installation process again... although the process may vary from device to devices tho (like names for softwares or tools/apps for hacking/cracking), but you'll get the general idea
hope this helps
yep.. he pretty much said it. let us know if it worked

Agreed....
So BMM is the recovery ur going to flash the roms... With bmm u can multiboot or triple boot
Install it n set it up.
When u reboot your device.. Whether thru bmm or normal reboot you will see a green android logo everytime before u see moto logo.
Tap on that. Youll get numerous options... To create a system go to settings, tap on system 3-6(pick anyone) and create system data and cache images of arnd 650mb 650mb 300mb respectively (create the data image as per ur no. Of apps u want..)
Once you've set up ur system.. Go to recovery.. Change the system before doing anything or else you'll end up doing stuff to your main system....
Flash the rom gapps on desired system
You'll only get bmm app on 1st i.e. The main system... Other system dont require bmm... Just reboot through the system u r in and youll again see the green android logo from where u can chose where to boot different system or go to recovery for flashing and stuff...
U can flash roms on system 1 tooo but i would just suggest that u use multiboot to get the hang of the device and roms and of its functions...
More specifically point me in the direction on "how to make systems". Sounds different from the Galaxy S series, and im not seeing many threads about it.
Reboot ur device >Tap on green Android>Settings >pick any system (except 2 and 1 is obviously your main system )>create partition>and then system, data, cache respectively....
Explore bmm options once u reboot.. You'll understand what im talking about more clearly
also there is video tutorial for using bmm, check a2 general thread
Ok, thanks man im about to flash the ROM and see how it goes.
Just to make sure i have to be under the system i created (system 3) before flashing?
Will also check that video out if i cant figure it out.
EDIT: Im guessing i have to boot into the system i flashed the ROM under. Trying that now.
Got it, thanks for your help man. Honestly i would have been lost without you.
one last question, everytime i reboot it keeps rebooting back to system 1 automatically.. how to i get it to boot only into system 3 where i have the ROM.
and when i boot into sys 3, my contacts dont transfer

U can change the settings of default boot to whatever system through bmm app..
U have to make backup of contacts in system 1 and then export to ur desired rom.... Its just a new different slot for booting a rom.
Is it not wise to flash a ROM on system 1?
I mean whats the point of the having different systems anyway?
Also, the 650/650/300mb deal you suggested isnt enough at all, even with an SD card. Whats a more realistic # if i want to put music and a lot of apps on the phone. I never had a storage problem with my galaxy phones.
Right now im running SlimKat, i know that its a matter of opinion, but in YOUR opinion what do you think the best ROM is right now? Or your personal favorite.
Again, thanks for all the help man.
Hi
So I really like android, used it for about 2 years. However, I never got a chance to see how CWM worked. I did see some videos, and they went into recovery (which i know about), and selected "CWM.zip". Does just booting/selecting this affect my android device? Also, if I use "Backup and Restore", would that affect my device, if I just backup, not restore? Does it need root? Sorry I just wanted to know
Also, I looked on the fourms but could not find anything with my search. Please tell me if something like this exists Also, I already saw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587607, but that did not answer my question. (Srry I am new the the fourms so....)

What phone are you using now, you phone already flashed CWM or not?
CWM is a recevory mode that you can flash a custom rom , backup your base/stock rom/data/system and etc. It use for restore back into before u flash a custom rom,if there is any bug or problem or stuck after you flash a custom rom.
It like u can save/load before killing a boss in game
