All microsoft stores are a doing promo, you can challenge any of their windows phones w/ various of test and if you lose, you get the option to trade in your phone for a brand new windows phone w/ no strings attached regardless of your phone service.
It can be any phone, even crappy old blackberrys and old Iphones. I was just gonna trade in my old iphone for a new windows phone but then a friend of mine beat their phone w/ his iphone4 and got a free HP folio ultra book worth $1000. They dont allow jailbroken or modified overclocked phones, but according so some people, they just scroll through your phone and dont really check.
Some challenges they have you do is to take a picture and then upload it to facebook. First one to upload wins. Friend got lucky because the microsoft associate phone locked up on him
One of my other friends that didnt have a facebook had to search for a 4 star resturant with reviews and direction. He had a bone stock epic 4g and the windows phone couldnt get a gps lock lol.
I feel like id have a good chance on taking them on with my phone as soon as i fix the gps lock. But what else should I do to make my phone look stealth to the point where you cant tell its rooted?
My friend w/ the epic 4g said they turned it on and just looked at it and said ok.
Also is there a way to restore the boot animation to stock? Im currently running Cm7 nightly that is 2 nightly b4 the current one as well as trinity kernal and that gives out an animation on boot.

As for making it look like it isn't rooted or OC'ed, find that flashable zip of superuser without the actual apk so it won't show up in your drawer, remove any overclock programs too.
For the boot animation if you can find a completely stock 2.3.3 zip take the animation from that, as for the splash screen, you'd have to compile your own kernel.
i might just backup my current rom and flash w/ full wipe the gingerbread stock rom
anyway to tweak that to make it a bit faster?
Lmfaoooo, say no more!
Or do what I will, since I use GoLauncher, you can hide apps from showing up in the drawer. Superuser, CPU Master, Titanium Backup, all hidden. And set the theme back to stock. OC to 1.4 gHz on boot before I hide the app.

This reminds me of the Microsoft vs Apple performance contests.
Hey guys, sorry i hadnt updated since posting this thread but...I WON!
lol i reflashed cm7 b4 i went to the microsoft store to make it look like my phone was stock. They didnt even check it.
My challenge was to find a 4star resturant w/ reviews and directions on same page. It was the challenge i was prepared for. Google maps opened in a sec and i already had a resturant in search history and i smoked their crappy windows phone.
I won a 13" special edition ultra book HP folio!
they also extended the contest from the 29th to April 5th but only giving out 100 phones a day and a limit of 10 Ultrabooks (if someone wins) a day.
I am so trying this

Just like to add that since they extended the challenge for the 4th time, me and my friend went with our G2x's and ended up winning 2 $1000 dollar gift cards! If any of you live withing driving distance of a store I recommend you give it a try.

So you bought a Thunderbolt. Your now a second generation Androidian. What to do with your old phone. I would like to hear your ideas.
I stripped my HTC Incredible down and created another gmail account for it. Then I installed an app called SECuRET SPY CAM. Made a mount with dedicated power. Now I have a home security system. Works better than great. Takes a pic when it senses image change and 2 secs later I'm looking at your mug on my Thunderbolt.
Yes I made that word up Androidia. Put it in WOWWIKI.
I let my sister borrow my Motorola Droid1 to see if she would enjoy having Android over Blackberry. Once she returns it i have no idea what to do with it.
sold it on swappa for 290
I'm keeping my N1 as a backup GSM phone. I'm trying to find a buyer for my G2 though.

I think we have a new motto...
"XDA... A community of elite hackers converting your $400 cell phone into a $19 webcam!"
Classic.
Haven't even moved over to my TB yet and when I do the Dinc will stay as a back up phone for a while.
I'm getting ready to sell my Eris as it was previously used as a back up.
I'm going to hang on to my Eris for a while. I am turning it into a media player/spare GPS/game system for the kids. I am keeping my nand backups so I can get back to fully functional within minutes if needed. Also, while it is in "media/kids" mode I have a different SD card in it so the kids cant screw up too much.
Too bad it won't do Angry Birds...
Thanks for the response on what to do with the old phone. I just have a feeling someone will show up with an idea to make us all facepalm if we sold our old phone.

Well you can cut off most everything by just making the gpu be off and wifi stay off and sticking to airplane only mode. If you do all that then what else is consuming battery? I'd assume most apps wouldn't try to update in airplane mode, and you can uninstall any apps you don't need since you are focusing on it being an mp3 player right? Seems pretty simple to me, what other features would you like a rom to have?

Everything I've read so far indicates that you should allow it to update first. You should do some more reading though just to be sure of what you're doing. I'm going to leave mine stock for a while until I'm comfortable with it.

This is a good thing. The G tablet went from a aftethought to maybe the most popular non ipad tablet in a matter of a week.
On a side note. my woot G tablet came with stock 2.2. Angry Birds and a few other apps . You could access the dashboard but it always started on stock 2.2 then I did the update and it went to the dashboard and angry birds ( and some of the other Apps ) was gone. Strange. Had to go to viewsonics website to put Angry Birds back on. ALmost like these were refurbs that were never updated. Mines working fine and I love it , just something I noticed.

RE: over capacity
XDA recently migrated to new servers powerful enough to make Bill Gates drool. Unfortunately, with all the new power comes immense tweaking to the SQL databases, and until our server admin finds the sweet spot, these may happen on occasion.
Rest assured that every error generates a notification, and he acts as quick as possible.

The site's definitely more laggy over the last day or so....
To me, the sad part is that because ViewSonic has effectively taken a pass on gTab support, virtually the entire customer support load has landed on the XDA site and the generosity of its devs and user community.
If there were such a thing as corporate shame, ViewSonic should be feeling it.

My wife was really looking fwd to this, but sadly doesn't seem to work on OG Droid. AZ page says OGD 2.2.2 & up, but not for her on cyan 6, which I thought was 2.2.3ish? Can't look now as she is pretty jealous of her time with her phone.
Nor on cyan 7, which i think technically might be "up" from 2.2.2, if my math is correct.
Couldn't be more disappointed. Got her all excited and let her down hard. If anyone knows of a good clone I would appreciate a heads up.

I'm trying to get my friend to get one but they are out of stock! Sucks!
There is no better phone, even for the 150-300 some could pay for it. I doubled my original speeds in one day just by grabbing the latest updates here. Trying to get my g/f to snag me another s4g for free during this deal for my daughter, its gonna be a family phone here, lol.
Got the same deal
They had this deal about a month and a half back. This is how I ended up with the phone. I switched over from sprint and am loving every minute of it. Not too big on the unlimited data but only 2gb of high speed cap they have in place but its cool. There is a lot going on with this phone right now to make it really bad ass, hell it is a beast completely stock.
i've had the SGS4G for a little over a month and i love it, and its gotten better the past few weeks with all the roms and other dev stuff coming out for it. it's prob just as good as the HTC Sensation for the value since you'd be paying a lot more for the Sensation now. the specs are pretty equal i think, the only thing is that it doesnt have a notification LED and no camera flash/LED either, but thats not too big an issue so i dont mind as much now.

I have no complaints about the phone myself. I was sad about the internal storage but once you fota fix that problem is solved. As far as notification light - I use Bali kernel which has BLN support. My four buttons on the bottom light up whenever I have a notification. The ext4 mod makes my phone super snappy and responsive and I can't wait until we get voodoo on top of that.
My co-worker used the Sensation over the weekend and said it seems to have some odd connectivity issues when making phone calls/texts/using data. http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/HTC-SENSATION-4G/Sensation-4G-Data-Connectivity-Issues/td-p/875585 Every phone has it's flaws but I hope it isn't plagued by bugs like the G2X (which is an AWESOME phone but just needs a software update).
Don't get me wrong, The Sensation is a beast but I'm not a big fan of Sense UI. I prefer Go Launcher or Launcher Pro. Heck I'd even use the stock Gingerbread launcher over Sense. If you try to run an alternate launcher over Sense it seems to bog the phone down (at least on pre-dual core phones). This probably wont be a problem once they unlock the bootloader though.
Let the results speak for them selves I mean were literally blowing other phone out the water thanks to this community.

Can you point me in the right direction for this mod? I have frost bionix running, and this mod would just be the icing on the cake. Thanks!
Also, I took advantage of this deal and now my dad will have one of these awesome phones just in time for fathers day. We got the 200 mb data free for a year too. If you take advantage of this deal, make sure to call and ask for free data/10.00 off your data (if you want more than 200 mb)

Sure. The kernel that bionix comes with has bln support. You need to download the bln app from the market. To make it work you need to push a file to /system/lib/hw. You can find a link to the post that has this file on the bali kernel's thread. It's the fix by chadster I believe.

A Windows Store recently opened near me. I figured I may as well give it a shot.
Currently running CM10, though I might switch back to AOKP Milestone 6.3 since things are a bit more stable there. Because the competition is done from boot, I can't have apps cached. It's probably a good idea to overclock this thing a bit, as well.
They can choose any challenge they want, and it's more than likely that they'll try to pick one that MS Corporate has identified to be a trouble area for my particular phone. Having a custom ROM on here might serve to level the playing field a bit, but by how much I don't know.
Certain things like disabling the lock screen and putting certain apps (Maps, Local, etc) on the main home screen are easy enough to do, but I was wondering if there was anything else to take into consideration. For example, the Facebook widget lets me update my status right from the home screen, a step less than needed with the Me tile on WP. Also, if I remember right, one of the challenges that has gotten a bit of notoriety is having to display two cities' weather data simultaneously. I think I can do this with a pair of widgets, but I'm not sure which.
Also, the prize is a $1000 MS Store gift card if I thoroughly smoke the Windows Phone (all six challenges). I'm not sure what they'll all be (I'd imagine a few of them would be lifted from the ads), but I know I can beat the Lumia 900 in a few of them.
Edit: Just thought of something - what if I were to use a WP-style launcher with some functioning live tiles to win? That'd really mess with them.
Lol they did the same thing 3 months ago but they are lame because they don't let you go in with such high end device like the hox. Make sure to have a widget showing the time in two cities, that's their favorite challange
I'm sure you've looked into it, but heres a list of the most common ones they use, plus some of the conditions:
http://slickdeals.net/f/4143624-NEW-Smoked-By-Windows-Phone-Contest-3-30-12-4-5-12-100-Phones-Per-Day-500-25-Gift-Cards
And if you can get a Windows Phone launcher set up and feel confident with it, please record it, I'm sure the looks on their faces will be priceless.

wondows phone challenge is stupid IMO, MS needs to stop the nonsense.
Heres a windows phone challenge, have a ton of apps in your app store
I'll have obtain a copy of the current rules from the store and pick through them. I'm not sure what the whole "can't have challenges pre-loaded" deal is, but if they disqualify me for having widgets while having live tiles pinned to the screen, that's a load of garbage.
Also, the part where it says I can't have an unmodified phone is at the least worded fatuously. Really? The version that came with the phone? Guess I have to go back to 1.85 and have nothing on it...
I don't think the employees would really be able to tell the difference if I came in with an AOSP ROM, but I suppose I could just pop the latest version of CleanROM on there and tweak it under the hood. Sense is pretty well-integrated into social networks, though I'm not sure if it's quicker than the multi-network updates from the WP me tile.

Assuming thwy're smart enough to know. Just walk in with Apex / Nova / stock? I'm not sure how strict they are, but I wouldn't give them too much credit, their just sales reps.
If there were no rules I would : any 4.0.3 ROM to use beast mode kernel. OC to 2.1 ghz and use performance governor so it stays at max. Use dual core mod so both cores are always active, and last but not least go into developer and disable animations. And keep an ice pack near by so you don't have anything catch on fire.
[email protected] windows app store. Very true. Luckily play store in my opinion is as good as app store for iOS. I think its a little superior since it loads much faster and doesn't require a password to update and download apps. I hate visiting the app store on my iPad. Unbelievably slow. The whole os is sluggish compared to this...
Make sure fastboot is enabled. Many of the challenges are from power off....

Would fastboot allow for quicker initialization of apps from startup? I'm pretty sure the reboot is just to clear apps from RAM, and that boot time isn't part of the challenge.

Seems pretty intresting, lol I'd love to try as well . Well anyways what i can help you with is for the ROM does it have to be stock? If not just pick somthing like CleanRom 4.2 and overclock it to 2.1Glz or 1.9 (Whichever works better for you). Second choice would be to use a Vanila rom like what your using. Other than that all i can say is good luck!
EDIT: Some reason, it didnt load anything other than the OP.... Oh well, only if you could mod...
In the videos I've seen some of the challenges included booting the phone from power off.

Don't take it. They minus will call it the: we compare our flagship phone to your outdated one and choose challenges that we have selected that specifically target the weaknesses of your phone in order to get more people to buy our phones.

Well, the idea is to overcome the weaknesses by eking out as much performance as I can and setting up my UI in a way that lets me do things as efficiently as WP can, like you can with Android. I could pop the latest CleanROM on there and the MS store employees would be none the wiser.

Well then why not pop in a kernel too

I think that the Windows Phone challenge is just plain dumb. The fact that they dictate exactly what the challenge is just seems to rigged to me
You're going to lose, and even if you win, they're going to find a way to get out of giving you anything. People have tried this, and MS has screwed them out of it.

It's supposed to be "Stock" which can mean a lot of things, too vague.

Yeah, this is what I'm worried about the most. They could weasel their way out of losing by claiming most any modification I make the phone has taken it from stock. I'm not safe from this clause unless I run a 1.85 RUU, relock the bootloader and make no changes to the phone except from the initial setup.
