No ringtone notification

I recently rooted my G1 and installed the JF1.41 RC33 lite update, and now my notification sound does not play when I receive a text message (but it works for other things, such as gmail).
I am also running the latest version of the Resident Evil Umbrella theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482143&highlight=umbrella) and I didn't test between updating the build and installing the theme, so I'm not sure which it's related to.
I've tried using a default notification tone, as well as one from my SD card using Rings Extended, with no difference. Anyone else have a problem like this?

I think with the lite version there is only one notification or ringtone left in the system thats why you need to create your own ringtones using ringdroid

Yes, there are only three notification tones left on the phone, none of which will actually play when I receive a text message. Same thing with the custom tone I loaded onto my SD card. No matter what I do, I simply do not get a sound when I get a text message.

The g1 will read ringtones if the correct folders are on the sd card I think.
Try this:
Make a folder on your sdcard called media
Inside it make audio
Inside audio make alarms, notifications,ringtones and ui.
Then in each of those folders put your ringtones.
oog , mid or mp3.
Reboot your phone now when you go to assign a ringtone the phone will find them.
It works for me.
Post the results.

Well, it seems to have stopped working again. Or rather, it now works sporadically. I haven't changed the location, and it does the same thing even if I change it to a default alert, so it has nothing to do with the ringtones themselves. Gah, maybe I should just re-flash...

OK, I think I may have actually just solved it. I checked my processes and the Messaging app was running twice for some reason. I force closed both, re-opened and tested, and BINGO! Sound! =D
Now I just have to figure out why I had two instances of Messaging running in the first place...

Anyone know how i can get Android 1.5 ringtones on Android 2.2?

I hope this is the right area to ask, and i apologize if not.
I just went from 1.5 (Magic) to 2.2 (Desire) and man, the first thing i noticed is how crappy the Froyo ringtones are! I really want my regular old 1.5 ringtones, but im not sure where to look.
Is there a 1.5 ringtone dump anywhere? Or can i download them from somewhere?

But android 1.5 (and possible above) was weird, in that the default ringtones could only be selected by choosing default. therefore, the ringtone im looking for isnt in that group

if you're asking how to get them to work on your phone all you have to do is make a folder called media on your sdcard. In the media folder make another folder called audio and place yet another folder called ringtones and notifications. just place your ringtones and notification sounds in their respective folders.

No that i know how to do.
Im asking for the default ringtones from android 1.5 Apparently, theyre not stored in /system/media. In that directory are all the optional ringtones.
When selecting ringtones, you can choose from the list, or select default. The default ringtone is NOT found on that list and therefore NOT in system/media as far as I know

Anyone know whaat I'm talking about here? Lol

You may want to download the original zipped ROM from HTC.

Ok. Am I the only one here who thinks that the ring tones and alerts on this phone are terrible!?! Let's get a general thread going with your favorite ring tones and alerts. Don't post full songs either, OC is encouraged.

You aren't the only one. The alarms included are a joke. I don't use ring tones and haven't listened....but there is no alarm included capable of waking any normal person up.

I have the OG "DROID" ring tones for notifications. A custom tears don't fall ring tone for calls and my alarm. I'm a heavy sleeper and it has no problem waking me up

You are so right about the terrible ring tones on this phone. The sad thing is it sounds like the were really trying but all of them are kind of embarrassing to use. I installed Zedge of the play store and got some decent sounds.

I like the old Ma Bell ringer from my Droid Incredible as a default ringtone, but have otherwise enjoyed the other "nature-inspired" sounds on this Galaxy S III. A large bell sounds for my primary email account, a distinct whistle lets me know when new messages arrive and a small triangle-like sound is used for general notifications (i.e., not usually time-dependent). I'm using the guitar riff for my default ringtone, but may add the old Ma Bell tone for that, otherwise my standard custom ringtones are in use for different callers (e.g., "We Are Family" snippet for family members, etc.)

I just Googled for stock ICS or JB sounds in a flash-able zip. I used it while on the stock rooted TW ROM.

here is a zip file with all tones from all builds of android. Is 78mb. Unzip on computer and transfer the folder to media on sd card. I can't remember if I removed some of the duplicates in this folder or not. Let me know and I'll clean it up. http://db.tt/Im2DhIeq

Haha, that's a first.
I'm using the Darksiders puzzle completion sound for text messages, one of the random notification noises from another version of Android (Simple Low, I think), and the Gmail Notifier sound for emails.

Guess it was the app cuz I just saw few other threads and other people did it too. Usually the app with say I can't post in so many seconds or something

Also, like i said i can't remember if this is the one i cleaned up or not but if you have duplicate sounds in your menu just hook up the phone to usb, go to your menu like gonna set a new tone and then open internal storage folder on computer so can go down list and delete doubles. Ummm..if you just open ringtones from computer that's only one will have to clean. And let me know so can clean it up on mine end so others don't have to. When i downloaded it the instructions said to only transfer the ogg files but i did the mp3 ones also because wanted r2d2. Those will say might not play on device but they do on mine and i have the gnex. I think those are what cause some duplicates. And the alarms are so annoying you get out of bed

I so love Zedge. For my text messages I use the mario coin or an old skool car alarm (getting disarmed). My email notification is the AOL's classic You've Got Mail. My favorite... my phone ringing is the modem sound (no dial-up on the beginning).
For my wife, she a district attorney so I gave her the Law and order (dun dun).

On my nexus 4 I could create new directories ("Ringtones","Notifications", "Alarms") on my virtual sd card and place tones in there. Then the preference lists for choosing these notification types showed the extra tones.
On the nexus 5 this doesn't seem to happen. Does anyone know of a different way to do this?

I'm getting files show in the preference lists up from /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones - however they're just playing a "bong" noise, not the actual mp3.

Not working for me either on n4, n5, or the n7 with stock Rom. Worked fine when I used aokp.
The only way I can get it to sort of work now is use rings extended then select es file explorer and naturally navigate to the file. Then it plays fine. They just won't show up to preview them the way it normal did.
It does work I put them in the system audio notification ect folder, but I'm trying too avoid messing with system for the first time.

I got it working. Very frustrating. Initially what i did was download all my notifications and such from dropbox directly to my phone and put them in the correct folders. Rebooted ect and it didn't work. I was told to try plugging my phone into the computer and moving the folders and around and back into the right folder. Then I disconnected from computer then they showed up. I wonder if the media scan isn't working unless you unplug USB? IDK, but it works now.

If the device rooted, you can move the files the /system/media/audio/ringtones, notifications etc. folder. Work like charm!

On my Nexus 4 I had my ringtones in /sdcard/Ringtones and that doesn't work with the Nexus 5. I also tried /sdcard/media/Ringtones and that didn't work either. In both cases I even tried rebooting the phone after putting the mp3 files to hopefully trigger a media scan.
So what would the correct location be?

Now I'm wondering, if it's a problem with the mp3 format of my ringtones. Could you please do me a favor and see, if the ringtone in the attached zip file works for you, when you put it in /sdcard/Ringtones .

i downloaded it, AirDroided the mp3 to my phone (default is storage/emulated/0) /notifications, and selected it as my Hangouts sms tone...sent an sms to myself, turned off the screen, and bazinga, it works
when you say /sdcard, do you mean you made that directory via pc, or are you referring to ESFileExplorer (or the like) reporting the directory as /sdcard? on Nexii, '/sdcard' just points to storage/emulated/0 [i think it's something called a simlink, but i don't know what that is]

Works for for me... I use ASTRO File Manager
Notification MP3 went into SD Card > Media > Audio > Notification
Ringtone MP3 went into SD CARD > Ringtone

I am referring to the way ES FileExplorer reports it, so /sdcard/Ringtones is in fact /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones.
Could you please try it with putting it into /sdcard/Ringtones as well and see, if Media Storage shows it as a Ringtone.
No idea, why this doesn't work for me, when it works for others.

sorry mate, I'm not doing it again, the result is going to be exactly the same

After some testing I can confirm this on a NON-ROOTED Nexus 5.
You can place notification sound files in either of these two locations, they work equally well. Note that this post, unlike many is typed with care and shows the EXACT path names from root with proper capitalization. I did not try all the bastardizations but case and plural/singular actually matter a lot of times.
/sdcard/Notifications (/storage/emulated/0/Notifications)
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications (/storage/emulated/0/media/audio/notifications)
HOW-EVER-ER...
You must move at least 1 file to the directory from your PC before ANYTHING will show up. It seems, and stands to reason, as others noted that moving from the PC while attached as a media device causes Android to rescan the directories. I did not test if you only need to move 1 file on the whole file system or if you have to do it per directory. But by moving one file out and back FROM THE PC all files in those directories became visible in notification pick lists.
I also rebooted after moving the files around. I probably should have checked before since it may not be necessary. But I am so accustomed to rebooting I forgot to test that.

hey I got the same problem as you
The ringtone is not being picked default media storage and even it picked in some cases im getting the bong sound
so here is the work around
dont use the media storage as default ringtone picker .if you already did that ..go to settings->apps->all apps->media storage and clear defaults of it
then go to settings ->sounds->ringtone and use esfile explorer in this case ..select the ringtone you got using the file browser then it works

as said some posts before i suggest to use another file manager than the stock one, it worked for me

I pluged the phone into the computer USB. Cpoied the ringtone of my choice to the ringtone folder. Did the same with the notification ringtone. Go and select the file in Settings...Sound. Mine were .ogg files

Once you install the sound files in the various locations on the sdcard, such as /sdcard/Ringtones, you can update media storage by doing either of the following:
Go to settings -> apps -> all -> media storage and clear data, then reboot
Or
Use the app ScanMedia to update

Certain sound files makes Ringtones/Notification sounds silent

I'm trying to use some mp3/m4a music files as alarms or notification tones, but not all these files work. Most of the time, after I choose the sound file, it would show silent as the ringtone/notification. So even though I have a certain file set, it would not ring when I get a call.

Anyone have an idea. This never happened on my old phone that was on 4.1

If I select a file for my ringtone, it would display no sound after I select it.

Perhaps your mp3 files have some issues. Try using a program like mpTrim (windows) on them to clean them up.

The m4a files are just ones downloaded from iTunes. What do you mean by clean them up?

It removes sections that are bad at the beginning and end that some players might not like.

This never happened on my old Nexus S. I also don't want to modify all of my music files, which would take a long time. Is this a bug or is this normal?

I've tried mp3 files too. It still doesn't work. However, if I use PowerAmp to set the ringtone, then that file will work. It puts another copy in the Ringtone folder in the root of the SD card. I have my music file in the Music folder and not in any media\music structure.
