[Q] question about new phone - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this question in the venue pro section but no luck. I purchased a dell venue pro off of amazon and when I dial ##634#on the phone and go into phone/security info it says unlock/*****us_TMOU_simloc
So my question is : does this mean that the phone is unlocked (able to side load apps) but sim locked.

Doubtful that it's dev-unlocked (able to sideload) as no phone comes that way by default, and I think you'd have noticed if you'd done the procedure to dev-unlock it (it's not hard, typically, but you don't do it by accident).
There's a registry viewer (also supposed to have editing ability, but nobody has made it work that I know of) built into the EM app as well. It's a bit hard to get to (I could find it again, but I had to decompile the app to do so), but you could check the developer-unlock regisistry value that way.

T-Mobile MDA Vario IV Issues

Dear all,
I have had the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV for about 6 weeks (I'm in the UK and it's running Windows Mobile 6.1). It is so slow out of the box. I immediatley turned off the touch flo thing which improved it a little.
I have a number of specific problems which I cannot seem to find answers for on the site and I'm thinking of installing the original HTC Software if that is possible.
I'd like to get help for each of the issues but if I can't, then I'd like help on how to flash my device. Here goes:
1. Text messages come in with +44 at the front. Phone calls come in without +44 and start 07. This means that people's names who are stored in my phone either show up in texts or calls, not both. T-Mobile's customer support answer: Store everyone in your phone twice, one with and one without +44. Thanks T-Mobile. I cannot imagine anyone ever creating a Phone where this is a feature, however, I seem to own one.
2. When composing a new text you have to got menu > new > sms instead of just new as you did with the Vario III. Infuriating. I'm sending texts, I only want to do two things! Reply or New. Grr.
3. If someone texts you who isn't in your phone book you have to add them before calling. All I want to do is click it and maybe answer a 'are you sure you want to call?' dialog box as with the Vario III
I am making the assumption that HTC didn't design a phone where point 1 is a feature and that T-Mobile messed this up.
How would I go about flashing my device with the base software? Do I have to set up the device to work with T-Mobile or will my settings be retained somewhere? I know that in doing this reset, my warranty becomes void.
How do I find out the exact model of my phone in order to select which download to use?
Thanks in advance,
Deve
I too have a Vario IV. In terms of your questions, it's been a while since I ran the TMob rom having flashed first to an HTC Rom and then to Tael's cooked 6.5 rom, so cannot actually remember the problems with the rom. In terms of phone number recognition, I do seem to remember that using a tool call Advanced Config which allows you do so - see last post in this thread (there will be other threads though so have a search using google):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-420076.html
First things first though, T Mobile did release an updated rom (on their site under support -> downloads). I do not know if your phone came preloaded with this update or not or indeed if it would cure any of your problems, but it might be worth a try.
If you want to flash another rom and I would recommend it (I found even the HTC rom to be way better than the T-Mobile one, and not just for a better colour scheme), then the method of flashing is well explained in the HTC Wiki (see top of page). Essentially you will need to "Hard SPL" the phone - simple enough procedure - which will allow you to flash another rom. I believe there is a method to revert to your stock settings for warranty purposes.
Read through the wiki, but the best instructions are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008
Before flashing, you will need to find another rom. To begin with, you might want to try one of the HTC WWE (ie English) roms. Have a look in the Wiki again for "Available Shipped Wm6.1 roms) and the links there will take you to the threads where you should find them available for download.
The HTC roms (and most cooked roms) have the advantage of setting up your phone connections automatically (I would think an O2 rom would install O2 settings only)
In terms of backing up, your outlook data will remain on your PC, but for other files not on your storage card, you could try installing Microsoft MyPhone (texts, photos and other things I can't remember). Once you have flashed your chosen rom, you can reinstall myphone and your data should sync back to your device.
The Hard SPL thread referred to above mentions PIMbackup as an alternative for backing up.
In terms of models, there are only two distinctions as far as I am aware - GSM and CDMA but I think the majority of the posts here are for the GSM system, CDMA has its own subforum and it always seems pretty clear from the threads if you need to be aware if what you are downloading is specifically for one or the other.
Good luck
All out of order, but hey!
As Jock said, there are 2 main "flavours" GSM & CDMA - you have a GSM one (it has a sim card). Specifically, you (almost certainly) have a Raph300 (its on the label behind the battery) although this extra information isnt much use to you!
Number ID's - Again, its been a loooong time since i ran the stock rom (i think it lasted less than a day before i changed it), but from memory of serveral problems, make sure you only have the numbers stored on the phone (not the sim card). I cant remember if thats a fix for the +44 /07 problems, but it does frequently crop up in similar cases. And the "advice" from t-mobile is utter [email protected]!
Flashing:
Yes - you will void your warrenty
However, you can usually restore the phone to stock, so should you need to return it, T-Mobile wont know.
For how to flash, see the guide here. -- For what to flash, please read (and then re-read) the rom forum.
The txt thing annoyed me so much i created a shortcut on the today screen to start a new txt, and also assigned the envelope key (slide out k/b) to start a new txt. Google AEButton for the mapping and use the syntax:
Code:
"tmail -service "SMS" -To """
For a shortcut - same idea, & it depends on what you use to display the links.
I have a vario IV too, and, altough I'm still a noob (I've got it from just a couple of weeks!) I'm running energy genesis rom and it's superb (even if it runs out of battery pretty fast).
Actually I haven't seen the original t-mobile rom (bought it used you see...) but with win 6.5 and manila 2.1 everything is very smooth!

[Q] Help. I need to make registry hack of phone friendly name and other problems too!

I had to leave this set of threads related to WP7 upgrade to Mango 7.5 specifically on the HTC HD2, in order to work on a set of minor issues that came up with the new release of Android's Tabooany 2.2. Now that we're done with that, I've returned to the the HTC HD2 upgrade to Mango 7.5 (2270). Apparently in the 3 weeks I was away from this issues a lot has been happening. Specifically the 7.5 RTM being pushed out by some carriers. Where I left off, I was following a new post from xboxmod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236027 that used XBmod-Yuki ROM V2.00 which seem to me the way to go since it left the phone unlocked (by leaving the Chevron, root and unlock features on the phone) and ready for the Mango 7720 build. This morning, I allowed Zune to apply cab 7008 and 7392 (no-do) to the phone. My intention were to then follow up by manually installing all of the update CABs using the one shot technique to get all the way to 7720. However, I see that Zune 4.7 is now Zune 4.8 and it seems to interfere with the WP7 Update cab sender. I tried to send Build 7403 over to the phone and a series of errors popped up in the DOS windows running the sender that made no sense to me. But then Zune came up and said this upgrade is not supported on your HTC HD2 phone. So I'm pretty much stuck until I can find a way to upgrade the phones name in the registry to HTC HD7. I can't get a copy of Zune 4.7. I had a copy on my hard drive that has been magically deleted since my time away from this project. Most online version are now gone but I did eventually find one in Norway. I downloaded it and a message popped upon the D/L completing. It said the D/L contained a virus and had been deleted. My virus program (AVG 2011 Pro) didn't do that or it would be in his log and the file would be in the virus vault. BTW, I had already disable Windows Defender Service so why did this happen? After the Zune 4.7 deletion the same thing happened when I attempted to download 7720.rar from Megadownload. Windows 7 x64 said it contained a virus and deleted it and pointed me to a Microsoft generic message about viruses. Again no message in the system logs or the virus protection logs although I had disabled AVG as well by now. Anyway, I somewhat regress, but anyone who has experienced this type of behavior in the past few day please let me know. My main issue right now is that I need to get the phone friendly id in the registry changed. I've used the WP7 developer Toolkit to push the Advanced Registry XDA to the phone and attempted to change the phones model number but as soon as I attempt to write it back, the phone vibrates and reboots over and over again. I've now flashed back to no-do with build 7392 reapplied by Zune 4.8. It would appear I'm not going anywhere until I get that phone model upgraded in the registry. I have read a post on this forum which I can't located right now on using HTC-ProvXML-Deploy.XAP to make changes to the registry but it totally lost me when it said to created a text file with the registry keys and changes that I wanted applied, which I did. But then when it had me to run the text file renamed to xxx.rgu through ProvXML program and extract the XAP file then rename it to CustClear.provxml and then insert it into the extracted HTC-ProvXML-Deploy0.0.1.XAP file, I was totally lost. How do you insert anything into an XAP file without recompiling it in VS2010 assuming you had the source. Any advice from anyone on any or all of these issues would be greatly appreciated. Folks without your help I'm stuck on Windows 7 Phone. Please help. Thanks!
You can open an xap with winrar.

Humm, that's interesting let me see what I can do with that. I'm not quite sure of the implication of your statement but I need to go back and look at the notes on this and maybe it will start to make sense now. Thanks for your help buddy. I assume this is unique to Winrar. I'll let you know the the outcome by posting back to this thread.

[Q] edit phone registry from computer?

So, I changed the name of the light theme to a custom name by using the wp7 root tool by heathcliff. After doing that, I can't open any apps on my phone, not even root tool or nokia's own diagnostic tool or games (well, game is considered an app). The app actually opens for like 1 second and closes instantly. Even after rebooting the phone, the same thing happens. I am still able to access email and the phone setting except for theme.
I am trying my luck by asking if there's anyway to edit the phone's registry by using PC and if there's no way, then sad enough, I'll have to hard reset my phone

you did make a backup of your device via zune before poking around didn't you?
if you have used zune to update recently you can restore to that which may lose some stuff but at least not everything
as for changing the reg via the PC without being able to run any apps on the phone, I believe your out of luck
I'm guessing you have a Lumia 710? It *might* be possible to write an app that uses the Nokia registry access or provxml driver (I.E. doesn't require Root Tools) and is able to modify the registry at launch, before it tries to load its UI (trying to load the UI probably being the step where things will break and crash). Might, I say...
Thanks to everyone for taking their time to reply, I did not backup my phone and does not have the knowledge to make an app. I think the easiest way out for me is to just hard reset my phone.

How to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 and the latest Zune version?

I'd like to know how to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 computer and the latest Zune version?
I've now tried:
- WP7 Easy Updater -> didn't work. Gives me an error message and leads me to Microsoft's support site.
- Windows Phone 7 backup v.1.9 -> didn't work. Gives mw an error message "the input string was not given in the correct order..."
I've tried Zune4.7 dll for the later one -> same thing, didn't work
Is there a way to make a full backup of your unlocked/developer unlocked Windows Phone 7 with any (other) software? I'd need to replace the micro-SD card of my Dell Venue Pro from 32Gb to 64Gb and wouldn't like to loose the music I have in the isolated storages of some Marketplace apps. I've even tried Isolated Storage Spy tool but it doesn't allow to access to the isolated storages of Marketplace apps.
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

I've just gone through the onerous process of trying to export my SMS messages from an original HTC Trophy (WP7.0) with Chevron unlock.
Things like SMSBackup don't work (target a higher version of Windows Phone, and hacking the xap manifest at best got the app deployed but not running). Backup programs like the ones you listed did nothing. Something called WPV App Data Backup at least connected and created a bunch of folders but they were all empty.
In the end (after literally years of on-and-off attempts) I gave up on the SMS messages and let Zune do its update. Turns out that Zune does a backup to "C:\Users\JohnCitizen\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update" (or your equivalent) before it applies any updates. It's not a FULL backup in the sense that I'd understand the term, but it includes the isolated storage of apps which seems to be your main concern.
If your phone is already up to date I'm not sure if there's a way to fake an update or force Zune to do a backup as if it were preparing for an update but that might be your best bet.
Side-note: the pleasant surprise was that I didn't need the backups anyway. I've applied 5 cumulative updates to bring the phone to WP7.10.7720 and it still has the SMS messages and app data (meaning I could apply the interop unlock and get my SMS messages out with SMSBackup after all!).

Thanks for the advice but the phone is already WP7.8862 so it cannot be updated anymore. But I've tried both of the aforementioned apps and neither of them seem to work
Another possibility I've been thinking is a sort of "blind copy" of micro-SD if that's possible if the backup of Marketplace apps (and their isolated storages) is not possible. Well, I'm willing to try just about everything to save the music that I have in my phone. It'd be really painstaking and time consuming to download all that music (once again) to my phone after replacing the micro-SD card.
Speaking about your phone, why haven't you installed a custom ROM to it? I've installed custom ROMs to my HTC 7 Pro (Dynamics 2.2) and to my Nokia Lumias (Lumiatrix, don't remember the version right now). And my LG Quantum I've unlocked with the registry code. Makes a life a whole lot easier. Too bad no-one has found a way to port a custom ROM to Dell Venue Pro since I already would've done it. Well, developer unlock will do then...

Originally because I wanted to backup/export my SMS messages. Now I've finally worked that out I don't really care about the phone. Windows Phone is a horrible pile of sh** compared to what Windows Mobile was, much less what Android is now, is so I have no desire to waste any more time on it.

Yeah, you're right. Android is much closer to Windows Mobile than Windows Phone is.
But the reason why Windows Phone and iPhone are so closed systems, is their information security.
Android is quite open system compared to those two aforementioned ones.
I do have some Android devices but I've still decided to stick with Windows Phone. It's the best (well at least for me) OS for business purposes.
Just looking for a Windows Phone 8.x device with the physical QWERTY and possiblity to jailbreak it...
Back to subject: I'd really appreciate if someone could give me a hint how to get those two already mentioned backup apps to work with the latest Zune version, WP7.8 & WIN7 x64.
RE: SMS BACKUP Application
i need SMS backup xap file for lumia 710 dev unlocked mobile.
software version 7.8, make: nokia.
i cannot flash or try interop unlock methods, i tried loading xap files by removing INTEROPSERVICE in capabilities, app loaded successfully, but raised exception when app is loaded n crashed.
please suggest if any registry/policy editing steps through windows phone device manager or if any steps...
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

[Q] Developing a customer rom for work

Hi,
My name is Chris, I work for a company called Mobile Genius.
We sell second hand mobile phones mainly on eBay, hoping to set up our own eCommerce site sooner rather than later. However this is not why I'm here. For a lot of issues with phones, from flashing to hard resetting a device, XDA has been great for me and really helped me out. So thanks to all the people who post here, and whoever takes the time to reply to me now.
We have a Z3X box and a piece of software called Chimera (only got Chimera 2 days ago). They save us a lot of money on unlocking devices. I've been looking into flashing all of our phones, as a lot come with passwords and data on already and they must be wiped before being sold. Does anyone know if it's possible to flash more than one phone at a time on the same computer?
Question 2:
Is there any kind of testing tool to test an Android device. For example, we must go through each device one by one, testing the speaker, ear piece speaker, microphone, buttons, touch screen, WiFi and other tests. This is a must, especially with second hand devices. We don't sell iPhones due to they seem to break easier than other phones (personal opinon, but I do have an iPhone myself ) So this would be needed for android devices only.
Question 3:
In regards to flashing devices. We are wondering whether it's possible to create your own branding, like how the networks add there branding so it is seen on the boot process and the wallpaper. How would one go in regards to adding this to each device. I was curious whether it's possible to make a file which can be flashed onto each device. For example when I use the Z3X box to change the network unlock code to 00000000 on an Ace 2 it requires me to root the device as it's unable to root the device automatically. The easiest way I found was to copy an update.zip file to the phones memory and then flash a pda file which is rooted and it then makes the device rooted) Is there a simple way I can have a pda file and flash it to the phone and it will keep the original software but just add branding with our logo? Or if anyone knows of a completely different way to do this but quickly I'd be very grateful for any advise.
If any of the above has been answered elsewhere, send me a link and call me a noob and I'll get the info from there.
Thanks
Chris

Yes, possibility exists for all three questions of yours.
Q1) You could make a wipe.bat file which wipes through adb, requires batch programming knowledge.
Or you could look under my signature. You will find an ultimate tool, it is basically a tool which can bend your Android in any way... It has wipe option factory reset
Q2)Yes, for MTK there's a built in function called engg. Mode which is used to detect errors, for other devices. Some bootloaders support factory mode. Which is also used for a complete checkup
Q3) Yes, your boot.img holds the Bootlogo (you can extract the boot.img from the tool in my signature and leave regards ) wallpaper also resides in system somewhere (forgot exact loc). And es EFS part can be reprogrammed but could be illegal (?)
HIT THANKS if you like my post
