I really love my Samsung Captivate phone from ATT. It's one of the better phones i have had from ATT...mind you not the best but one of the better phones. Recently I have become extremly frustrated with the whole froyo update situation. First the official release was going to come out in September then pushed back to November and now from what im hearing not until December through a OTA update from ATT. When I got my phone I was told by the ATT rep that an update from 2.1 to froyo 2.2 would becoming soon. I went on ahead and got the Captivate against my better judgment. That was this past summer and i paid 199.99 to upgrade. Well now it's November and all we get are rumors about an update that may or may not happen. Now that same captivate is selling for 129.99 at Best Buy. Now I feel ripped off, not only from ATT but now from Samsung. For now on whenever I purchase a new phone I will buy the phone based on what it can do at that time not based on what it might be able to do later on down the line, that way i won't be so frustrated. My older brother has an iphone 4 and now im really starting to get upset because now he is streaming netflix movies and doing a host of other things with his phone that my phone may or may not be able to do. I know that developmentally the iphone is limited but...you get what you pay for out the box and your not waiting for the phone to be able to do something else later on down the line. Im seriously thinking of just caughing up the money and picking up an iphone 4 from the Apple store this weekend. If I do that then I will give away my Craptivate to anybody who wants it because i wouldn't feel right charging someone for it being as though it's already outdated with 2.1 firmware on it.
Ill buy it if you want to sell it

First, you shouldn't be upset about the price dropping. All electronics have a dramatic price drop after a release. You should expect that.
Second, there is a Froyo update coming out for the phone. No doubt about it. We have already seen it released for the international version. We have two leaked releases for the Captivate. If there wasn't an update coming out, Samsung wouldn't be spending the time in making these builds. Also, you bought a Captivate with 2.1. The box doesn't say, Android 2.1 with a 2.2 update coming soon.
I also wouldn't call Android 2.1 "outdated". Compared to Android 2.2, yes it is outdated. But compared to other mobile operating systems, it's advanced. I cannot think of anything iOS can do that Android 2.1 cannot.
Now, with regard to applications: this last year has been huge for Android. They now have the volume of users and where there's volume, the developers can make money. You speak of Netflix, they will be releasing an Android app in Q1 of next year.
It could be that this phone is too advanced for you. iPhones are great and easy to use. If you don't understand all of the enhancements that Android brings, then maybe an iPhone is best for you. If being able to stream Netflix NOW instead of 2 - 3 months from now is that important to you, then get an iPhone and trade off:
Open source goodness
Awesome community support
Phone customization
Flawless google integration
More hardware options (you're not stuck with just one style phone)
Mass storage capabilities
You're not dependent on iTunes
File structure access
Build your own apps (google app inventor)
Up to 48 GB of storage
Replaceable battery
$5 monthly insurance (at&t doesn't offer insurance for the iPhone)
REAL multitasking
Memory management (If you choose to manually do it. Android is great at managing memory itself.)
The awesome Widgets
Notification bar
Oh, and the list above doesn't even mention any of the infinite possibilities if you chose to root your phone.
My question is why do you need the "official release"? The leaked version is probably just as good (I saw probably since OTA isn't out). I love it and am not really looking forward to the official one. Also most android phones are not in 2.2 so you really shouldn't feel outdated. By the way Amazon gives this phone for free (well 1 cent to be exact).
Edit: Didn't see above post; says it all better than me.
Frustrating, ain't it? Also part of the fun of the gadget.
Heck, searching for news on when the update'll be released is how I get through the workday! (I've also spent too much time flashing different incarnations of Cognitian's ROMs - Which are great, by the way).
The update will come, then we'll all be clammoring for Gingerbread!
@skinien - Great reply!
Not being able to watch Netflix movie on your phone really has nothing to do with Samsung, AT&T or the Captivate. Netflix decided to release their Android version later than the other platforms so there is nothing anyone can do.
So the real question is why do you need 2.2 right now? What capability are you looking for that will only work in 2.2? Personally, the only thing I need 2.2 for is voice dial over bluetooth.
cool story bro
There will always be an OS, hardware, phone coming soon/out right now better than what you have. *****ing about what you have is certainly an option. Not a good one, IMO, but definitely an option.
I am still using stock 2.1, rooted, with sideloaded Wireless Tether and Flash 10.1, and launcherpro hides the bloat.
With the exception of being able to moves apps to the sd, what is missing?
Who needs FroYo, anyway?

Well..if you will feel bad selling it.I'll gladly pay you for the shipping of it to my home. Feel free to get the I-phone if this is what you are wanting to do. They work great for what they are.I bought both of my sons theirs last August when I got 2 Captivates for my wife and myself. So I can always use a spare one
Your not alone in your feelings of anger over not getting what was promised,I too am a bit pissed off about it as well. I do know that in time it will be available in a official capacity..but in the mean time I'll wait it out like everyone else is doing that wants it. Sooner or later there will be a completely stable custom rom for it that isn't a PIA to load and has everything working properly on it.This is what I am looking forward too,but again it is a waiting game for me and many others..
Feel free to PM me your mailing address for the shipping cost if you elect to give it away..
Thanks
Mac
Screw the official release, get froyo now!. nothing like free tethering. Im sorry but next flex streaming? who cares i got flash! i get hulu streaming lets see an iphone do that.. my droid takes a poopoo on the iphone.
There are plenty of awesome, free ROMs here. Try one on for size before you go spending hundreds of dollars to be told what you can or can't do with the phone you just bought.

You have word reference on android, not even a close one on iphone. I dont really use my ipod touch to watch netflix. It gets stuck a lot and the screen is way to small. The only netflix app I used is netflix on windows media center. Why are you frustrated about netflix on a small screen now. And by the way, we have swype keyboard, it if not even on evo 4g. And my rooted phone has many paid apps and games on it, but I got them for free. You never need to jailbreak it to install some free games.
Iphone doesn't have the xda app, hahaha, just a joke.

Others have said it but if your "smart" enough to make your way to the XDA developers forums you should have no problem flashing one of the 10+ 2.2 roms in the android dev subforum.
Who's going to really use the official att 2.2 with all its bloat ware anyway?
Iphone is for kids that want to show off their fart apps at school and for grandmas and grandmas who cant use a phone. On the other had captivate is for people who like to flash, unbrick their phones and explore the open world of android with will be the furture of mobile devices. Iphone has been the same for the past 3 years and people get horny when a new iphone comes out and it caj do copy paste wow!

Yeah your right, ive been reading a lot of responses to my post and from what i gather i have the better phone in the Captivate vs the iphone 4. I think i will keep it. Plus i just heard that you can root the phone and add a sample of froyo that should hold me over until the official froyo arrives. So Thanks a lot for your advise. I will be keeping my Captivate...not too mention 400.00 for an iphone is crazy.

Just thought this was a cool article from Venturebeat and thought I would share (especially since we don't know when Honeycomb is coming to us):
Looks like I can't post links. It's an article posted this morning UI customization. Posted this morning on Venture beat. com

Looks great. This is what I would like to have. I thougth that HC was giving me something similar just out of the box, not sure now.
I do not care about names, rather than real features, my Gtab with Vegan 7 is stable, fast, and does all what I need, I am just missing this type of UI that reallyu allows you to get all you tab can do.
BR
http://venturebeat.com/2011/03/30/c...-delivers-true-multitasking-before-honeycomb/
*reading it now*
It certainly doesn't sound like they are publishing the source to it anyway. (it does look pretty good, BTW) They are probably just soliciting tablet vendors. After recent punishment Google dished out, I think the vendors are more incline to work with honeycomb only going forward.
That's just my 2 cents.
Looks like oversized widgets to me.
Looks interesting to me. I have been wondering why no one provided a way to resize windows to fit multiples on my gigantic screen.
Although it kind of reminds me of the TapnTap home screen.
Hmm! That looks like something worth having. I'll check it out when it comes out, in about four weeks.
If it didn't sound sexy enough already, they had to go and publish a demo video of it running on a Gtablet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezvAs759rbg
I can't take much more teasing like that.
I emailed them about being in on the beta after I posted last and they replied that they would contact me. Running VEGAn 5 now, I will flash to the GingerVEGAn when they notify me.
--- Coming Soon ---
Very nice, but i want some app like WP7 Calendar or WP7 Email
No doubt once the UI is finished those apps will be a lot easier to develop. I know the WP7 Android team has started on those.
I have checked out the demo, and it looks really good, once you have a beta version I would be happy to be a tester. I have a dhd un-rooted. This looks better than the wp7 ui already on the market.
Nice but I feel this still needs some work....
Okay i installed it.
Thought it would be a home replacement.
Is it going to be a home replacement, or a full rom?
where are you heading with this?
the stuff within the app all works as you cant do much with it.
if you could get a full winp7 ui working it would be nice. but at the current stage think we need a bit more information on what you are trying to achieve.
As mentioned above, I intend to make a library for developers to use to make applications with this Windows Phone 7 UI. This is only a DEMO of the UI, not a functional app. As far as a home replacement, possibly.
This is looking great keep up the good work, great to see some new devs here!
Hey it's now august first, you posted on your blog that a public release might happen today? Is this still possible?
Sorry, I removed that some time ago (perhaps your browser has cached it). I just have not had the time to work on the UI, and without a finalised API a public release would not make sense.
I see, can you give us an estimate time? Also as iammodo said a home replacement would be amazing, i'd be willing to pay 15$ plus for that.
I would love to but I have learned my lesson with anticipated dates. Android development is a hobby not a paying gig for me. As for a launcher, I would have loved to collaborate with the developer of Launcher7 but he declined. As I know nothing about launchers it. would be quite some time before I could ever release one. For now you have my Windows Phone 7 Calculator in the Android Market, and the notion that more is on the way.
Hi Guys,
i just bought the Gear 2 a couple of days ago.
its a nice device, good hardware but bad software.
2 days later i saw The Gear Live with Android Wear and Google Now! on Google I/O,
Somehow i feel ripped-Off by Samsung.
the S Voice is really bad Compared to Google Now!
If you feel the same. And want to see Android Wear Ported to the Gear 2 please leave a Vote And Reply.
How many thread have to be made and clutter this section . Read before you post it's a rule. You bought it 2 days ago then you can take it back . And buy the gear live . Simple . I mean it's only been a day since wear was announced. In 2 days you haven't had time to experience tizen your just following everyone else who complain about it. Tizen is a good OS . Not for everyone but is good. I myself wouldn't mind wear but in good time .

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. How old are you? Android Wear was announced months ago and it has also been published in many media circles that Samsung was also on board starting perhaps 1 month ago to release their Android Wear variant.
First of all the Gear is a lot more nuanced for anyone to say that they've gotten the gist of understanding it's full potential in a mere 2 days. It's a new platform hence it's more than meets the eye . That's like me buying the Pebble knowing that it is extremely rudimentary in it's functionality and saying after 1 day that it's garbage. I'd still need at least a week to say that. That is why paid reviewers never release their final draft before spending sufficient time with any new device. (From what I've heard the Pebble is very buggy not well built. No Siri in sight. Yet the media raves about it gathering all the lemmings to spread the gospel.) Samsung has really dared to innovate well ahead of anybody else. They should be given a little credit & respect.
The Svoice is excellent for texting, reminders, calling my contacts, note taking with about a 95% accuracy rate. The media player is phenomenal and when it's combined with the free app Launcher from the gear store I can't imagine a better setup. Notifications are superb. Battery life is great. Camera is very useful when I need to take a visual note of a label or whatever. Customization of the navigation layout. Not to mention the developing platform of apps I use on a regular basis that are amazing when it comes to adding awesome functionality (Omelet app to share quick pics with my wife who owns a gear as well. Fleksy to type messages when it's too noisy)
To the statement of voiding your warranty in 2 days. Who does that? The Tizen SDK is there for any one to use. It's fairly simple and doesn't make you an expert on a platform because you've written a basic app. The list of things that you've given is an inherent part of any device like an Iphone or any smart device. I would argue that because you've done those things on those platforms doesn't make you an engineer.
So I ask you go back and watch the Google I/O event again and keep in mind that the Android Wear has ripped off many features from the Gear. Even the hardware requirements are mimicked from the Samsung Gear and Galaxy platform. I honestly sorta like it myself (the Wear Op system). However navigating that thing is gonna be a nightmare. There is room for improvement on it as well just like the Gear's Tizen and credit must be given when it's due. Kaygeee it takes these companies a long time to get these things right. Enjoy the times we're living in. Imagine how awful the 70's, 80's and 90's were when in came to tech. 300 Bucks is not a lot to spend in order to be on the cutting edge.
Like the previous commentor to your statement said, return your device back to wherever you bought it or sell it on Ebay/Craigslist. I for one am going to see how things develop with Android Wear, however I can proudly say that I've enjoyed everyday spent with my Samsung Gear. If I ultimately move on to the Android Wear devices after 3 months of Gear use. I like many other happy Gear owners have no regrets. What other capable powerhouse smart watches were released in bulk within the past year? Exactly!

I have to agree with the above. Android wear looks like there is almost too much going on. Navigation looks cumbersome. I like being able to tell my device to turn off by pressing a button. I had the original gear and that side button drove me nuts. Having the home button on the front of gear 2 is nice. I can run my watch for 3 days easy taking calls emails texts playing games. Shorting pics of computer tags for work. Would I like to see wear come to gear 2. I'm on the fence. Would I try it ? Yes. Will I go out and get the new watch? No. I feel gear 2 is better built and worth the 300$ gear live isn't worth the 200$

I'm no expert... but from my point of view the Room for improvement on the Tizen S-voice is a lot.
compared to Google Now! which comes on a similar device released only couple of months after Gear 2 release
and why would i imagine the 70's, 80's and 90's when we live in 2014 my friend times change fast
like i said its good... but is it good enough with the young Tizen on it? how would it be with Android wear on it? is that going to bring out more functional potential.
I don't want to sell it. ill keep it around and wait for more improvement. or a chance to Port Android wear to it.
But in the moment i want to know how much people want to see The Android Wear on the Gear 2. i think I'm not the only one, thats why i made this Poll.

Okay Junior. Now make sure you drink your warm milk, put on your whitety nightys and relax a little. I'm out but thanks for the redundant useless (I mean brilliant) poll. Attempted to spit some knowledge at you but your rebuttals indicate it'll be a lost cause. Who needs a healthy substantive debate when we've got Junior around these parts.

:laugh:Like you said Junior you're the expert. Sooner or later your rants and complaining will force Samsung to their knees. Certainly now they will port Wear over to the Gear2 right away cause you're Kaygeee. You've been ripped off. You bought a piece of tech and something else is on the horizon. You should have been privy to that info before hand. Your bullet points are sound. You've voided your device within 2 days. Overall you are rational in all of concerns. They'll certainly seek your mercy since you have the power of this poll. Yeah Junior. You can make it happen. We support you!

the vote count is increasing as we speak
Kaygeee Thats Meee sooner or later Samsung is on its Kneee :silly:
maybe we should make a song... and post it on youtube..
i'll record and you rap on my Gear 2. Oeps the video recording time is only 15 seconds bummer.
I sold my gear 2 and bought a gear live for the simple reason that I want a fully functional smart watch to work with Cyanogenmod and not have to rely on the TouchWiz framework, I did enjoy my time with the gear 2 though on Omega rom and if android wear did come out for the gear 2 then I would probably cancel my order but until it's done it's android wear from here on out so I have the flexibility to use it on any rom I choose.

The main problem with it, and any other Android wear watchs is the 1 day use bit. Sure it's got an always on display but if they're advertising one day use, it probably means less.
Holding for for now until early reports from early adopters.
I like Google Now, but I never use it on my phone. The Gear 2 is giving me all the info I need with a 2.5-3 day battery.
I do also use the cam so gonna need support for that too.

Also gonna need it to play music from device (For gym), and keep all the health integration.
I just wish I had hangouts on the tizen, and also the ability to use keyboard to reply for those odd rare occasions i need to (so far never but would be a nice to have).
Facebook app to view whats going on and eBay would also be nice.
As of now Tizen is better than Android Wear because of App availability AND UI. Also if your talking about Google now and S-Voice they BOTH need Internet connections to work. Which here in the Philippines is not available everywhere. So I don't really care about that.
I guess yes Samsung will port Android Wear to the Gear 2 but they'll still modify it so it will still work as it works right now.

Any kind of voice command is useless to me, it makes you look like a douche in public and if you're not in public just use your phone.
Tizen is growing on me, the music player is good / fine for gym, has cool health sensors and heart rate etc. It works for how i intend to use it.
If i get caught short while in the house away from phone i can still take call on device, dont think talking is on the Wear agenda.
Camera I also use often, very often. It's ideal for a quick snap.
The 3rd party apps are trash, and the forcing to use messaging instead of hangouts is whack, but as I don't intend to reply i just wish the notification showed the whole message.
The music player control is also way better on Tizen, everything on one screen, well thought out, little icons top right from clock face to go back. None of this silly swiping malarkay!
The fact you can send send directly from phone is also very cool!, the music player has plenty of features, favourites etc. it's actually very good. If this is a fitness device the Gear 2 shines.
+1 for android wear

Closing this... Having a hard time comprehending value or worth of this thread....
There used to be a launcher called TSF Shell and/or TSF Launcher Prime.
It has not been developed in several years.
This Launcher was far and away the single most customizable and capable interactive shell I have ever used. It had just about every option you could think of.
Of course it had its flaws and one of those was a learning curve. Some of the widgets were kind of useless and there were other issues that I can no longer remember. I know it was rare to get updates also.
The reason for this post is an attempt to resurrect the Launcher. I am by no means a developer and wouldn't know where to begin. What I do know is that there are many smart and capable developers and UI designers here on XDA, so I figured I would give it a shot and ask if someone could pick up the pieces of this gem and bring it and all it's glory back to the realm of the living.
I'm sure if someone does, there will be a pretty decent dollar amount that comes with it, I bought it for $10 (USD) from the play store without a 2nd thought. I'm certain there are many thousands of people that share my opinion.
Also, many of the themes available for TSF Launcher still exist in the play store but the Launcher itself

Honestly, the only issue with the current version is the icons. For some reason many of them are little gray androids. I don't know why but I sure would love for some assistance in fixing it. I'm tellin' ya' there is no interactive shell like TFS. It is the best hands down. I've tried all of them. If anyone out there can fix the icons i will pay $250 USD but it has to be fixed for real. This would be the 3rd time I've paid someone for their android development work.
I actually have been using it and tweaking it for quite sometime, no issues with icons nor gestures! It even works with my (interactive)live wallpaper, I work quite a lot but I'll see about kicking together some stuff to post
TSF Launcher was the best launcher ever. I purchased it with $15/- and was not happy when it was taken over and killed by other launcher.
I would still pay to get this launcher back on my phone.
Waiting for someone to take the mantle and develop this launcher further
